Old Frames On New Media: Health Misinformation In Black Digital Communities, Merriah Croston
Old Frames On New Media: Health Misinformation In Black Digital Communities, Merriah Croston
Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Growing evidence suggests that health misinformation has the potential to proliferate on social media. However, our understanding of the problem’s magnitude continues to evolve. Despite several studies on health misinformation and Black communities in the United States (U.S.), few of these studies characterize misinformation within digital settings. This dissertation seeks to address this gap by: 1) synthesizing the literature on health misinformation and Black communities to identify prevalent misinformation topics and claims, characteristics of exposure to and belief in these topics and claims, and successful intervention strategies; 2) quantifying and characterizing the volume of COVID-19 misinformation on Black Twitter during …

The global shortage of neurointerventionalists presents a challenge to timely stroke care, particularly in low‐ and middle‐income countries. The Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology Stroke Interventional Laboratory Consensus criteria aim to standardize training and certification in neurointervention to address these disparities. This white paper reviews existing training standards in various regions, identifies gaps, and proposes a structured framework encompassing entry requirements, program structure, and certification processes. The Stroke Interventional Laboratory Consensus criteria further outline requirements for training centers and program directors. By establishing global standards, the Stroke Interventional Laboratory Consensus criteria seek to improve patient outcomes and expand access …
Strengthening The International Competitiveness Of Capital Markets: Global Insights And Local Strategies, Aurelio Gurrea-Martinez
Strengthening The International Competitiveness Of Capital Markets: Global Insights And Local Strategies, Aurelio Gurrea-Martinez
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
Global capital markets are undergoing a profound transformation. Over the past decade, there has been a marked decline in Initial Public Offerings (IPOs) in most advanced economies, including those with highly developed capital markets such as the United Kingdom and the United States. Interestingly, during the same period, countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and particularly China, have witnessed a significant increase in the number of listed companies, contributing to making Asia home to approximately 55% of all listed companies worldwide. The decline in IPO activity has prompted many countries and regions around the world, including the United Kingdom, the United …
Estimating Historical Age-Sex Distributions Of A Tribal Population: A Case Study Of The Hopi, 1900 To 1940, David Swanson, Jeff Tayman
Estimating Historical Age-Sex Distributions Of A Tribal Population: A Case Study Of The Hopi, 1900 To 1940, David Swanson, Jeff Tayman
Publications, Reports and Presentations
Historical information on tribal populations in the United States is scattered and discontinuous. A significant part of the discontinuity is the gap between 1900 and 1970. This paper describes a process that may partially fill this gap by developing decennial age-sex data from 1900 to 1940. Where temporally consistent, we compare these estimates to those done by others. This work provides a point of departure for generating more demographic information about the Hopi from 1900 to 1940 and, ultimately, beyond 1970, a critical turning point regarding the increased availability of American Indian data from the U.S. Census Bureau. It also …

Adolescents and Young People
The Coalition for Adolescent Girls (CAG), hosted by the Population Council, in collaboration with Akili Dada, convened a high-level donor roundtable on June 4, 2025. Against the backdrop of funding freezes, policy shifts, and widening global crises, this convening brought together funders, grassroots organizations, adolescent and youth leaders, and global experts, to reflect on emerging trends, lived experiences, and actions needed urgently to ensure adolescent girls remain at the center of global development priorities. This knowledge brief synthesizes key insights from the roundtable discussion. It underscores the critical need for long-term, flexible, and intersectional funding approaches that center adolescent girls …

Mesopotamian Journal of CyberSecurity
The MITRE ATT&CK framework has become a foundational tool for organizing adversarial behaviors and techniques in cybersecurity. While its adoption in practice and academia has grown significantly, no prior bibliometric review has comprehensively mapped the global research landscape surrounding this framework. This study addresses that gap by conducting a systematic bibliometric and network analysis of publications related to ATT&CK indexed in Scopus from 2017 to 2025. Using VOSviewer and quantitative bibliometric methods, we analyzed 391 publications to identify trends in research output, influential works, key contributors, thematic areas, and patterns of collaboration. Results show exponential growth in studies related to …

The Journal of the Research Association of Minority Professors
The academic achievement gap of Black, Hispanic, and Native American students has historically lagged as it relates to Caucasian students. This work defines academic achievement as standardized test scores, graduation rates, and college completion rates. The persistent educational disparities faced by minority students remain a significant challenge for school systems. The integration of technology offers a promising solution to help narrow these academic achievement gaps and provide equitable learning opportunities. Technology offers educators the ability to utilize self-paced instructional programming, ensuring that the educational needs and deficiencies of minority students are addressed. This work explores how innovative technological tools, ranging …

Managing Crowdfunding Risks In Terrorism Financing: A Mediated Analysis Of Government Intervention And Donation Intentions, Fithriadi Muslim, Eva Achjani Zulfa, Muhamad Syauqillah
Indonesia Law Review
Crowdfunding has emerged as a popular platform for collective funding of social, charitable, and commercial projects. However, its increasing use has raised concerns over potential misuse, including as a source of terrorism financing. This study investigates the relationship between donation intentions using crowdfunding and the risk of crowdfunding being used as a source of terrorism financing. Furthermore, it explores the mediating role of government intervention in this relationship. Using a Structural Equation Modeling-Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) second-order approach, the research evaluates the interaction between donor intentions, crowdfunding risks, and government regulations. Findings reveal that while donor intentions significantly impact the …
Compensation, Horizontal Diffusion, And Bottom-Up Pathways: State Climate Policies In The United States And Australia, Ian Bailey, Roger Karapin
Compensation, Horizontal Diffusion, And Bottom-Up Pathways: State Climate Policies In The United States And Australia, Ian Bailey, Roger Karapin
Publications and Research
Recent years have seen growing interest in subnational governments as arenas of climate governance, but limited systematic research exists on the extent, conditions, or pathways through which subnational climate policies can influence, or compensate for deficits in, national policies. This article addresses this gap by examining options for states to influence climate policy in the United States and Australia, two countries where federal governments have made limited progress in developing national climate policies. As an analytical framework, it conceives a typology of state government approaches to climate policy that distinguishes among compensating, horizontal diffusion, and bottom-up pathways. It then uses …
Preparation, Development, And Refinement Of The Interview Protocol In Qualitative Research, David C. Coker, Adebowale Akande
Preparation, Development, And Refinement Of The Interview Protocol In Qualitative Research, David C. Coker, Adebowale Akande
The Qualitative Report
Interview protocols are by far the most common method utilized in qualitative research data collection. Novice and experienced researchers, from working on dissertations to grant proposals or other publications, often lack detailed interview design methods, as many educational programs do not require specific coursework on interview protocols and question development. To improve qualitative research, we make a proposal to incorporate an interdisciplinary approach that operationalizes three stages: preparation, development, and refinement. Preparation involves mapping the extant literature to define broad, narrow, and focused topics to write actionable standards, goals, and objectives. Development uses instructional design and educational psychology to construct …

Global Commons, Local Crises: The Ecological Embeddedness Of Global Production Networks, Christopher R. Whynacht
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Notions of Global Production Networks (GPNs) are popular approaches to studying the complex, dispersed, and socially embedded production of goods and services. Yet, these concepts have largely struggled with incorporating environmental resources, risks, and actors. My dissertation leverages insights from Actor-Network Theory (ANT) to contextualize ecological elements of production as coequal participants with social stakeholders. I describe how GPNs are ecologically embedded and nested within the natural environment. I draw from ANT to develop a GPN framework that internalizes ecological dimensions. The second chapter in this dissertation develops these ideas and provides theoretical framing for further empirical chapters. The third …
Infrastructure Equality, Deborah N. Archer, Yuvraj Joshi
Infrastructure Equality, Deborah N. Archer, Yuvraj Joshi
Northwestern University Law Review
The United States’ racialized geographies have left communities of color with systematically inferior essential infrastructure that perpetuates their social and economic exclusion. From roads, public transportation, and sewage systems, to banks, high-speed internet, and high-quality public schools, people and communities of color have limited access to the fundamental infrastructure necessary to lead socially and economically vibrant lives. This Essay introduces “infrastructure equality” as a unifying framework to address the critical intersection of physical, social, and legal infrastructures that feed racial inequality. Drawing on multidisciplinary research, it argues that infrastructure—the interconnected and vital system of physical structures, networks, and social institutions—should …

Schools As Geopolitical Spaces: Violence Against Education During The Bosnian War (1992-1995), Allyson Bachta
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Attacks on education have long been a feature of conflict, yet their strategic use by state and non-state actors remains underexamined. Despite global concern and growing documentation efforts by the international community, the motivations and patterns behind school attacks are not well studied. This project investigates the strategic use of such violence by Bosnian, Serbian, and Croatian state and non-state armed actors during the Bosnian War (1992-1995) and challenges the assumption that attacks on schools are simply collateral damage. Drawing from political and anti-civilian violence literature, this study situates schools as both symbolic and strategic geopolitical targets, targeted not only …

Refashioning The Meanings Of Dress In Palestinian Transnational Communities, Enaya Othman
Journal of Gender, Ethnic, and Cross-Cultural Studies
This paper examines how Palestinian women in both the homeland and diaspora contexts have sustained and redefined cultural heritage through tatreez embroidery and revitalized the traditional thob since 1948. As designers, artisans, and entrepreneurs, they have transformed cultural dress into a site of socio-political agency, economic empowerment, and national identity-making. Their work not only preserves inherited forms but also recasts them as living cultural practices that resist colonial erasure and counter Orientalist and Western feminist narratives portraying Arab and Muslim women as passive. From post-Nakba efforts to safeguard thobs as tangible material testaments of Palestinian life to contemporary hybrid fashion …

Throughout history, travel narratives have taken up various forms and served various purposes. The changes of forms and functions were influenced by the spirit of the age. Today, in the contemporary digital era, social media platforms like Instagram have transformed travel narratives into stories combining images and texts that significantly impact public attitude on travel and tourism. On certain occasions, Instagram travel narratives contribute to the dangerous trend of mass tourism, although there are moments when the same travel writing form advocates sustainability. This study investigates the extent to which travel narratives by prominent Indonesian travel influencers on Instagram advocate …

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya
Water pollution in Yogyakarta has a long history dating back to the colonial era in 1926. Therefore, the main issue addressed in this writing is why water pollution occurred in Yogyakarta from 1926 to 1942. Basically, there are two factors influencing water pollution, namely natural factors and human factors. Using a historical research method, this study aims to examine water pollution in the Yogyakarta region, so that the government and the community can seek solutions. The sources used include collections from Algemeen Handelsblad voor Nederlandsch-Indie, De Locomotief, De Nieuwe Vorstenlanden, De Preanger Bode, and contemporary newspapers. The research findings …

Russian Influence On The Formation Of Georgian National Identity, Bilal Alper Torun
Russian Influence On The Formation Of Georgian National Identity, Bilal Alper Torun
Khazar Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences
The research investigates how Georgian national identity evolved while Russian influence shaped this foundational development. Throughout history the Caucasus region has maintained its complex ethnic and religious diversity because numerous nations have lived there while multiple empires and states have conducted invasions and occupations. Attempts to seize the region by Ottomans, Russia and Iran affected the identity formation in the Caucasus. Georgian identity provides one of the clearest examples. In this study it will be claimed that since the 18th century the Russian influence was the determining factor in the formation of Georgian national identity. In this context, first …

Paid To Play - The Canadian Hockey League Players Class Action Litigation, Kennith Wm. Thornicroft
Denver Sports & Entertainment Law Journal
In 2014, the National Labor Relations Board’s Regional Director ruled that scholarship football players at Northwestern University were “employees”. Subsequently, in 2015, the full board, and without deciding the players’ status, declined to assert jurisdiction effectively ending the dispute. There are parallels between this dispute and lawsuits currently before the Canadian courts involving the Canadian Hockey League (“CHL”). The CHL is nominally an “amateur” league and is the principal development league for players hoping to pursue a career as a professional hockey player. The players claim they are “employees” under provincial employment standards statutes. The CHL maintains that the players …

After each college football season, the talking heads debate which team missed out on the College Football Playoffs. Each year it is a different school who everyone says should have made the playoffs. There are a multitude of reasons for or against each team every year, but the main point remains that the NCAA will always have this problem on their hands. This article proposes the solution of a promotion/relegation style structure which will completely change the dynamic of the conference layout. It will give an opportunity to the best teams outside of the 'Power 5' or FBS to make …

Okinawa And The Offshore Island Chain—Eisenhower’S Joint Chiefs And The Foundation Of Strategic Flexibility, Dylan Yachyshen
Naval War College Review
With the end of the Korean War and acceleration of the Cold War, debate in the 1950s over how to posture U.S. forces in the Pacific against threats from the People’s Republic of China focused on what now is known as the first island chain. Decisions hinged on differing interpretations of the concept of “strategic flexibility” and established the foundation of continued U.S. presence in the region today.

The Riparian Logic Of The Montreux Convention In Turkey’S Black Sea Policy, Daria Isachenko
Naval War College Review
Turkey’s policies often appear at odds with its position in NATO and the broad direction of its allies. These polices become less mysterious when it is understood that Turkey’s strategic imperatives are driven by its unique position as gatekeeper to the Black Sea and the dynamics introduced by the tiered rights granted by the Montreaux Convention.

Management Or Misdirection—Competing Logics For Military-To-Military Contacts Between Great-Power Rivals, Travis Sharp
Naval War College Review
Contacts between militaries have long been viewed as positive, but history demonstrates their potential for exploitation. The intensity of great-power competition requires a more thorough understanding of the logics behind these activities. This novel typology of the different motivations behind pursuing or engaging in contacts with another military suggests how planners and practitioners can best plan how, and whether, to engage with rivals and friends alike.
