A New Career Path For Designers: Crowdwork And Designers’ Motivations To Engage In This Employment Model, İrem Dilek Alptekin, Pınar Kaygan

Learn X Design Conference Series

The unabated development of technology continues to affect human life in many aspects, one of which is working life. Over the past decade the world of work has been experiencing digital transformation. Integrating the digital processes and tools into business models, digital transformation has led to the shift in the traditional business structures, hierarchies, relations, and the workplace. Thanks to this shift in the traditional way of work, today, it is possible to outsource the work through an open call to a geographically dispersed mass of people. This means that, companies or individuals now have access to an indefinitely large …

(Inter-)Disciplinarity In The Making: Urban Design Education In Türkiye, Irmak Yavuz Özgür Sep 2025

(Inter-)Disciplinarity In The Making: Urban Design Education In Türkiye, Irmak Yavuz Özgür

Learn X Design Conference Series

While the disciplinary and substantive bases of urban design have long been debated in academic circles, its institutionalization has rarely been a central area of inquiry. Often addressed as an inter- or multi- disciplinary field, the processes through which urban design has emerged and taken shape in education has yet to be explored. Although the disciplinary trajectories of architecture and urban planning have been examined both independently and in relation to each other, urban design—often marked as a bridge between the two—has attracted comparatively little attention. However, such endeavour is of great significance for understanding the disciplinary grounding of urban …

Intertwinia Elitism: Educating Leaders Through Power, Myth And Ai., Francesco Galli Sep 2025

Intertwinia Elitism: Educating Leaders Through Power, Myth And Ai., Francesco Galli

Learn X Design Conference Series

What is the hidden message behind the Sator Square, and why does this palindrome continue to generate multiple and contradictory interpretations? Rather than resolving the hermeneutics of this ancient and enigmatic design symbol, the article adopts it as a speculative lens to examine how power circulates through the cultural manifestations of art and design. Revisited in the conclusion, the SATOR operates as a metaphor for the intertwined, recursive, and ambiguous forces that shape creative knowledge and leadership. Drawing on soft power as a force of attraction and influence, the discussion critiques design elitism—which constrains inclusivity and sustains hierarchical structures in …

Framework For Ethical Worldbuilding With Solidarity-Driven Co-Design, Laura Cechanowicz, Steven Zuiker, Michelle Jordan, Ed Finn, Ruth Wylie Sep 2025

Framework For Ethical Worldbuilding With Solidarity-Driven Co-Design, Laura Cechanowicz, Steven Zuiker, Michelle Jordan, Ed Finn, Ruth Wylie

Learn X Design Conference Series

Diversity is a fundamental resource in co-design processes; however, centering wide-ranging participants around a design rather than individual, disciplinary, or other forms of expertise can be challenging. Expanding the scope of design to include the entanglements of temporality and community amplifies these challenges. Addressing these challenges requires a reconfiguration of the fundamental relationships between designers, researchers, research participants, collaborators, and the land and place where research and design outcomes occur, including a deeper form of engagement with communities. Despite the substantial groundwork existing approaches have developed, emerging efforts challenge us to conceptualize an ethical approach for recognizing, working with, and …

Consortium, University, And Program Impact On Regional Economy And Community, Sean Creighton, Robert J. Sweeney, Katherine Cauley

Journal of Community Engagement and Higher Education

Community engagement in higher education has become increasingly widespread. As a consequence, universities find themselves learning how to integrate community engagement on their own, from each other, and, hopefully, from their community partners. This article discusses three distinct cases–a consortium, university, and program–and their impacts on a regional economy and community. In addition to illustrating intentional macro to micro community engagement practices, the article notes key findings from regional institutional collaborations. Further, the article recommends benchmarks for evaluating the quality and effective practice of community engagement.

Harnessing Wind Energy For A Green Hydrogen Revolution In Oman: Potential, Challenges, And Economic Viability, Navid Nasiri, Morteza Mohammadzaheri, Rayyan Muhammad Rafikh, Maryam Farrizi, Hooman Nasiri, Intisar Al-Busaidi, Sulaiman Al-Hashmi

The Journal of Engineering Research

This study is the first to comprehensively evaluate green hydrogen production from wind energy across 14 geographically diverse sites in Oman, filling a critical research gap in the MENA region where wind-to-hydrogen feasibility remains underexplored. Unlike prior studies focused on Europe (Dincer & Acar, 2015) or solar-heavy MENA projects (Mohammed et al., 2024), this simulation-based analysis leverages Oman’s unique wind resources and arid climate to pioneer regionspecific insights. Using Weibull distribution for wind resource assessment, we calculate Capacity Factor (CF), Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE), Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH), annual hydrogen yields, and CO2 emission reductions. Results highlight …

Identification Of Leadership And Managerial Roles Used By School Superintendents To Manage Rural School Districts, Bruce Allen Gillham Sep 2025

Identification Of Leadership And Managerial Roles Used By School Superintendents To Manage Rural School Districts, Bruce Allen Gillham

Student Theses and Dissertations

The role of rural superintendents is multifaceted, often requiring a balance of strategic leadership, operational management, and community involvement within school systems that face resource limitations and geographic challenges. However, existing job descriptions for rural superintendents frequently do not reflect the realities of their daily tasks, resulting in misunderstandings and misalignments between governing bodies and the superintendents. This study aims to enhance the understanding of rural superintendents' roles by examining the experiences of four superintendents from southeastern Oklahoma. Drawing on Mintzberg's managerial role framework and an interpretive phenomenological approach, this research highlights the importance of the researcher's self-reflection and the …

Ncti Is The New Gilti, And States Should Still Conform, David Gamage, Darien Shanske

Faculty Publications

This essay continues our series on corporate profit shifting by analyzing how states should respond to the federal One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which transformed GILTI into the new Net Controlled Foreign Corporation Tested Income (NCTI) regime. We argue that states should conform to this new federal provision as a reasonable and legally sound approach to combatting the persistent profit shifting that erodes state tax bases. The 60 percent inclusion rate for NCTI effectively serves as a practical, "rough justice" estimate of income that was economically generated domestically but improperly shifted offshore — an estimate supported by empirical research. We …

Synoptic-Scale Meteorological Patterns Associated With Extreme Precipitation Over The Contiguous United States And Concomitant Seasonal And Regional Variability, Amy M. Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

Seasonal and spatial variations of synoptic-scale weather patterns concurrent to extreme precipitation days, defined as days above the seasonal 95th percentile of the daily precipitation distribution, are characterized over a 44-year period (1980-2023) for the Contiguous United States (CONUS). Using atmospheric reanalysis data and a grid-cell centered approach, we construct seasonal anomaly composite patterns for sea level-pressure (SLP), integrated water vapor transport, 500 hPa geopotential height (Z500), and 300 hPa wind speed. Atmospheric variables known to be important for extreme precipitation. By interpolating composites for each grid cell onto the same polar coordinate grid relative to the grid cell we …

Practitioners’ Perspectives On Preventing Environmental Gentrification In Chicago, Illinois, Usa, Tania Schusler, Amy Krings

School of Environmental Sustainability: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Pollution cleanup, green space creation, and other improvements to environmental quality in cities are important to urban sustainability. However, because they occur within a political economic context characterized by structural racism, urban greening initiatives can intentionally or unintentionally reproduce racial, economic, and social inequities through environmental gentrification. We explored possibilities for improving environmental quality without displacing or excluding long-term residents including people of color, the poor, and members of other marginalized groups. We conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with community organizers, environmental justice advocates, urban planners, housing specialists, and others who held deep expertise through their lived and professional experience in …
