Glamour In Contemporary American Cinema, Shauna A. Maragh Jul 2020

Glamour In Contemporary American Cinema, Shauna A. Maragh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

American cinematic glamour shapes hegemonic notions of femininity, beauty, performativity, sensuality, and sexuality for both female actresses and viewers. In addition, glamour has an economic component in encouraging women to buy products, such as clothing and makeup, to help them emulate their idols from cinema. Glamour is more than beauty and notoriety: it is achieved through careful stylization of tangible aspects—hair, clothes, makeup—and intangible, cinematic elements—performance, dialog, lighting, and camera techniques. In Classical Hollywood, traditionally white standards of beauty were often exalted as glamorous, and many leading roles were played by racialized white actresses; however, actresses of color were frequently …

Spatial Statistical Approaches To Water Quality Modelling, Janardan Mainali Jul 2020

Spatial Statistical Approaches To Water Quality Modelling, Janardan Mainali

Dissertations and Theses

This dissertation aims to advance the existing knowledge related to spatial modeling of water quality by exploring and introducing innovative approaches to different spatial conceptualizations for water quality modeling and incorporating upstream-downstream relations in geographically weighted regression. By carrying out a systematic literature review of four different classes of spatial models in Chapter One, this dissertation identifies the following major research gaps: lack of incorporation of multiscale processes, not enough emphasis on spatial weights matrices, and unavailability of upstream-downstream relationships in geographically weighted regressions. Chapters Two and Three were designed to address these gaps in the literature. In Chapter Two, …

High-Resolution Mapping Of Fish Conservation Priorities Within The Mobile River Basin, James R. Carl Jul 2020

High-Resolution Mapping Of Fish Conservation Priorities Within The Mobile River Basin, James R. Carl

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

Identifying potential protected areas is increasingly important as freshwater fishes and associated aquatic organisms are under increasing peril. Human population, growth and subsequent landscape alteration, is degrading water quality and changing the physical characteristics of streams, potentially threatening aquatic species. The goal is to assess the capacity for protected areas to maintain diverse stream fish communities within the Mobile River Basin, including the upper Coosa River basin, by overlaying projections of fish species distributions and footprints of protected areas. Tools for identifying fish species distributions, environmental predictors, and potential protected areas include spatial conservation prioritization algorithms combined with open access …

As Good As Woke? : Mutuality And Third Spaces In A Guatemalan Volunteer Tourism Organization, Hannah Gdalman Jul 2020

As Good As Woke? : Mutuality And Third Spaces In A Guatemalan Volunteer Tourism Organization, Hannah Gdalman

Theses and Dissertations

It is estimated that as many as 10 million individuals participate in international volunteering projects annually (McGehee, 2014). Since its rise in the late nineties and early aughts, voluntourism has drawn the attention of academic and non-academic audiences alike, who have warned of the perils of exploitation, commodification, and white saviorism. This study conducts an issue-focused analysis to examine the extent to which the voluntourism experience has evolved into one of mutuality rather than cultural hegemony. Sixteen semi-structured interviews and participant observation were conducted at a longstanding Guatemalan voluntourism site. Wearing & Wearing’s (2006) Third Space interactive cultural tourism framework …

Open Access Publishing In The European Union: The Example Of Scientific Works, Nikos Koutras Jul 2020

Open Access Publishing In The European Union: The Example Of Scientific Works, Nikos Koutras

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Access to information resources and publicly-funded research outcomes have been considered in Europe during the last decade. Open access practice became part of the European institutions’ agenda since 2006 within the final report of the European Research Advisory Board. The Lisbon Treaty (2007) explicitly confirmed the European Union’s commitment to free circulation of scientific knowledge (Article 179 TFEU) and the dissemination of research results (Article 183 TFEU). In this regard, the Horizon 2020 program illustrates the importance of open access policy towards further dissemination of scientific information. The European Commission also introduced in July 2012 a scientific information package to …

Tackling Homelessness With Tiny Houses: An Inventory Of Tiny House Villages In The United States, Krista Evans

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Across the United States, tiny house villages are increasingly appearing as a method of addressing homelessness. There has been no formal or sustained effort to document tiny house villages for the homeless, however. This research involves the development of a database on the location and characteristics of tiny house villages for the homeless in the United States. The database not only includes locational information but involves an inventory of several physical and social characteristics at each site. Furthermore, an open-access browser-based Web-mapping app has been developed that will allow users to not only visualize the geographic location and data associated …

Brick-And-Platform: Listing Labor In The Digital Vintage Economy, Tamara Kneese, Michael Palm Jul 2020

Brick-And-Platform: Listing Labor In The Digital Vintage Economy, Tamara Kneese, Michael Palm

Media Studies

Vintage goods are valued for their nostalgic association with pre-digital modes of production, but their contemporary trafficking is increasingly organized by processes of platformization. The central component of what we call “listing labor in the digital vintage economy” is the online display of collectible merchandise, but listing labor also entails promoting sellers’ brands on social media and using sales platforms and other logistical media to manage inventory, process transactions, and handle shipments. Listing labor is performed by branded merchants and their employees alongside independent entrepreneurs. The digital vintage economy connects brick-and-mortar shops and resale supply chains organized around flea markets, …

Sociodemographic Determinants Of Physical Activity And Sport Participation Among Women In The United States, Jennifer R. Pharr, Nancy L. Lough, Angela M. Terencio

School of Public Health Faculty Research

Regular physical activity and sport participation have been shown to improve women’s health; however, research has found that better health is associated with sport participation. Little is known about the sociodemographic determinants of physical activity among women, especially among the different subcategories of physical activity (sport, conditioning exercise, recreation, and household tasks). Because of the added health benefits associated with sport participation, the purpose of this study was to examine the sociodemographic determinants among subcategories of physically active women in the United States by analyzing Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data. We used data from the 2017 national BRFSS …

Playing Well With Others: A Case Study Of Collective Impact In The Early Care And Education Policy Arena, Sarah J. Zuckerman, Amanda L. Garrett, Susan Sarver, Catherine Huddleston-Casas Jul 2020

Playing Well With Others: A Case Study Of Collective Impact In The Early Care And Education Policy Arena, Sarah J. Zuckerman, Amanda L. Garrett, Susan Sarver, Catherine Huddleston-Casas

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

The quality and quantity of early childhood care and education services have risen as a key reform area for influencing educational and economic outcomes. However, changes in this policy arena are stymied by the fragmentation of this policy arena. Collaborative approaches have been proposed to create systems-level change. Collective impact is one such approach; however, few examples exist in the early childhood care and education literature, especially at the state level. This ethnographic case study conceptualizes collective impact as a policy network capable of change in a fractured policy arena and reports the results from the first year of a …

“Why Can’T This Work Here?”: Social Innovation And Collective Impact In A Micropolitan Community, Sarah J. Zuckerman Jul 2020

“Why Can’T This Work Here?”: Social Innovation And Collective Impact In A Micropolitan Community, Sarah J. Zuckerman

Department of Educational Administration: Faculty Publications

Cross-sector partnerships, and collective impact, in particular, have gained increased attention as community-level strategies for tackling wicked, complex, social challenges such as child maltreatment. To date, there has been limited independent research on collective impact, especially in non-metropolitan areas with limited capacity. This case study examines the conditions that supported the development of a collective impact effort in a non-metropolitan community to address child wellbeing. It finds that small communities offer strengths that support collective impact as a social innovation as well as challenges that create vulnerabilities to outside influence that may stymie the development of locally developed social innovations.

The Perceived Usefulness Of A Weather Radar Display By Tampa Bay Residents, Michelle E. Saunders

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A weather radar display is a tool that provides spatially oriented, timely information about an impending weather event. While radar is frequently used by meteorologists, emergency managers, and pilots, this tool is now readily available for individuals to use on a variety of platforms including television, computer/laptop, smartphones and tablets. Most importantly, there are hundreds of mobile weather applications available as well as online sources that provide a weather radar display. However, little is known about how individuals use a weather radar display. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation is to understand why radar is sought out as a tool …

Strengthening The Evidence Base For Telehealth For Abortion Service Delivery, Nadi Kaonga

Journal of Maine Medical Center

Telehealth – which is the use of information and communication technology to provide clinical services to patients remotely – provides an opportunity to extend safe abortion services to women. A recent review article on telehealth for abortion service delivery found it to be acceptable, feasible and safe when compared to in-person service delivery. Despite the promising findings, the evidence base can and should be strengthened to optimize the impact of such services for women. Areas for improvement include evaluating the efficacy and effectiveness of telehealth implementations in more remote settings and with women across variable levels of technoliteracy, conducting cost-effectiveness …

Evaluation Of Geographic Disparities In Cervical Cancer Survival Across Maine, Kaylee Underkofler, Jason Lachance

Journal of Maine Medical Center

Introduction. National data exists suggesting the existence of geographic disparities in oncology care within the United States. It is unknown whether geographic disparities present a problem for women with gynecologic malignancies locally in Maine.

Methods. Data for each cervical cancer case diagnosed or treated under the MaineHealth system between 2007 and 2011 were acquired from the MaineHealth Network Registry. Average annual incidence and 5-year survival were calculated for each county in Maine and were mapped using geographic information systems (GIS) software. Next, cases were divided into 2 groups: those residing less than or equal to 60 miles from the sole …

Arbor Groves 41ho02 Final Report, Jayden Franke, Reagan Harvey, Ezra Jennings, Gabriella Rivera, Leslie G. Cecil Jul 2020

Arbor Groves 41ho02 Final Report, Jayden Franke, Reagan Harvey, Ezra Jennings, Gabriella Rivera, Leslie G. Cecil

SFA Archaeology Field School Reports

Arbor Groves, located in the heart of the Piney Woods and west of multiple large bodies of fresh water, was most likely a sanctuary for woodland animals and early Americans. In fact, artifacts from the Clovis period (ca. 10,000 BP) to the modern era have been excavated from the site. Most of the artifacts excavated during the 2016 field season dated to the late Archaic period (8000-500 BC) to the early Woodlands period (beginning approximately 500 BC). The amount of lithic debris and projectile points found strongly suggest that Arbor Groves was a lithic manufacturing site. The manufacture of projectile …

International Disease Epidemics And The Shadow Economy, Aziz N. Berdiev, Rajeev K. Goel, James W. Saunoris

Economics Faculty Working Papers

Adding to the emerging body of research related to the current coronavirus crisis, this paper studies the impact of disease epidemics on the worldwide prevalence of the shadow or the underground economy. The informal sector undermines compliance with government regulations and lowers tax collections. Our main hypothesis is that epidemics positively impacts the spread of the shadow economy. Using data on nearly 130 nations and nesting the empirical analysis in the broader literature on the drivers of the shadow sector, we find that both the incidence and the intensity of epidemics positively and significantly contribute to the spread of the …
