An International Approach To Homelessness. Part Ii. Slums Demolition Or Upgrading?, Pranit Lanjewar, Jaroslaw Richard Romaniuk Mar 2026

An International Approach To Homelessness. Part Ii. Slums Demolition Or Upgrading?, Pranit Lanjewar, Jaroslaw Richard Romaniuk

Faculty Scholarship

In search of the best approach to eradicating homelessness in underdeveloped countries with large populations, we conducted interviews with professionals involved in different models of helping the unhoused. Although it has been established that the Housing First model combined with human services is the best model to end homelessness, the cost of housing might be prohibitive for many national governments. In situations where governments are over-whelmed by the numbers of homeless people, communities and organizations develop specific methods and practices to meet the needs of unhoused individuals. For the purpose of this paper, phenomenological research was undertaken to learn how …

Quantifying Potential Spatial Accessibility To Adult American Sign Language Classes In Los Angeles County, Caroline R. Baumann Mar 2026

Quantifying Potential Spatial Accessibility To Adult American Sign Language Classes In Los Angeles County, Caroline R. Baumann

The Geographical Bulletin

This research examines potential spatial accessibility of adult American Sign Language (ASL) learning opportunities in Los Angeles County, California (USA). Over 90% of all deaf children are born to hearing parents, who typically do not know sign language. Research has shown that deaf children whose parents learn sign language tend to have better outcomes than those who do not. Thus, adult accessibility to sign language classes is crucial for the success of deaf children. The Two-Step Floating Catchment Area (2SFCA) method was used to calculate a provider-to-population ratio using network analysis and aggregate these ratios within population catchment areas. The …

Dune And Geographic Perceptions Of Today’S Artifical Intellisence Revolution, Seth T. Kannarr Mar 2026

Dune And Geographic Perceptions Of Today’S Artifical Intellisence Revolution, Seth T. Kannarr

The Geographical Bulletin

Today we are in the midst of an artificial intelligence (AI) revolution. As generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, and Google Gemini become increasingly available and accessible for more people to use, so does the growing concern for the ethics of their use and future consequences of this technology by geographers and the general public. By taking a look into the universe of Dune, a science fiction work that operates in a future world without AI “thinking machines”, we can gain insight into public perception and rising fear mongering regarding AI tools. As we proceed as a society, we …

Rethinking Poverty Indices: Unveiling The Unseen Realities Of India, Soumyabrata Mondal, Anand Prasad Mishra Mar 2026

Rethinking Poverty Indices: Unveiling The Unseen Realities Of India, Soumyabrata Mondal, Anand Prasad Mishra

The Geographical Bulletin

This article critically assesses India’s recent claims of rapid poverty reduction by examining the methodological, political, and data-related foundations of the Niti Aayog Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI). It scrutinises key methodological choices such as indicator selection, weighting structures, and the dependence on NFHS (National Family Health Survey) data which only partially reflect the socioeconomic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on debates surrounding the Alkire–Foster framework, the essay highlights how modifications to the MPI such as the inclusion of widely achieved indicators and the exclusion of consumption expenditure may underestimate deprivation and produce overly optimistic trends. It argues that …

Prairie, Nature, Innovation: Midwest Identity Represented In State Quarters, Kady Nolte, Gillian Acheson Mar 2026

Prairie, Nature, Innovation: Midwest Identity Represented In State Quarters, Kady Nolte, Gillian Acheson

The Geographical Bulletin

The US Commemorative Quarter Program, begun in 1999, was wildly popular with millions of people collecting the coins. Fifty new designs were introduced for the quarter’s reverse that intended to represent each state’s unique history and identity. These coins are a piece of material culture that can be studied to understand how they represent place identity, specifically state and regional identity in the US Midwest. In this study, quarters were examined using content analysis to understand how each design represented its state. Coins were studied individually and then wholistically to identify commonalities shared within the Midwest. Three themes were identified …

The Royal And Divine Garden: Cherubim And Vegetation Imagery In Solomon’S Temple And The Ancient Near East, Jack W. Sulewski Mar 2026

The Royal And Divine Garden: Cherubim And Vegetation Imagery In Solomon’S Temple And The Ancient Near East, Jack W. Sulewski

Global Tides

Solomon’s Temple is described in significant detail in 1 Kings and 2 Chronicles. It may surprise the reader to know that virtually all iconography included in the Temple’s design were standard forms of communicating religious concepts in the Ancient Near East. This can present some theological problems. Is Israel’s “use" of other pagan nations' religious symbolism an issue when communicating the holiness of God? To understand further the relationship between culture, politics, and Ancient Near Eastern religion, I spent one month doing archival research in England’s multiple museums analyzing ANE object collections. Through a report of my work, this essay …

An Ordinary Hero: Examining The True Nature Of Amelia Earhart, Daniella Hernandez Mar 2026

An Ordinary Hero: Examining The True Nature Of Amelia Earhart, Daniella Hernandez

Emerging Writers

This essay explores how Amelia Earhart’s perception in society has been skewed by the sensationalism surrounding her career as a female aviator and the conspiracies surrounding her mysterious disappearance. The author argues that Earhart’s true character and the impact she had on society as a whole have been overshadowed by the media’s fascination with her strange death.

Evaluation Of Transportation Policy Effectiveness In The United States: Case Of Personal Electric Vehicles And Commercial Electronic Logging Devices, Hania Afzal Mar 2026

Evaluation Of Transportation Policy Effectiveness In The United States: Case Of Personal Electric Vehicles And Commercial Electronic Logging Devices, Hania Afzal

Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–

Together, electric vehicle (EV) adoption and the electronic logging device (ELD) mandate illustrate two dimensions of transportation technology policy: the first driven largely by environmental and market-based incentives and the second by safety regulation and compliance requirements. Examining these cases side by side for the United States allows for a more comprehensive analysis of how technology adoption unfolds under different policy regimes, offering insights into the broader relationship between policy design, industry response, and public outcomes. The commercial motor vehicle (CMV) sector presents a different but equally important policy challenge in transportation technology adoption. Unlike consumer passenger vehicles, CMVs are …

Enterotoxaemia In Goats: Prevalence, Etiology, Risk Factors, And Therapeutic Approaches: A Comprehensive Review, Muhammad Mohsen, Jam Kashif Zaman, Amjad Hussain Mirani, Nazeer Hussain Kalhoro, Benazir Sahito

Journal of Bioresource Management

Enterotoxaemia remains one of the most severe and rapidly fatal diseases affecting goats, mainly caused by Clostridium perfringens types C and D. Despite widespread vaccination practices, the disease continues to produce significant health and economic losses, particularly in intensive and semi-intensive goat production systems. This review summarizes the current understanding of enterotoxaemia, focusing on its etiology, pathogenesis, epidemiology, risk factors, diagnostic approaches, and updated therapeutic and preventive strategies. C. perfringens overgrows in the intestinal lumen under favorable conditions such as sudden dietary changes, high-energy feeding, or stress-related microbial imbalance. The toxins produced especially epsilon and beta induce intestinal necrosis, vascular …

Status Of Soils In Protected Areas With Different Management Objectives In Lowland Rainforest, Southwest Nigeria, Bolanle Lisa Olajiire-Ajayi, Adeniyi Sulaiman Gbadegesin, Omotosho Ayodele Ogidan

Journal of Bioresource Management

Understanding soil properties is fundamental to sustaining the ecological integrity of protected forest ecosystems. This study examined the influence of two management categories; Strict Nature Reserve (SN) and Natural Park (NP) on soil physicochemical properties within the lowland rainforest of southwestern Nigeria. Fourteen composite soil samples, six from SN and eight from NP, were analyzed for texture, bulk density (BD), pH, organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus (AP), exchangeable bases (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, K⁺, Na⁺), and cation exchange capacity (CEC); base saturation (BS) was also determined. Both management categories exhibited sandy loam to loamy sand textures, typical of gneissic …

Stream Biofilms In West Tennessee Provide Insights As A Tool For Informing Restoration Practices, Kimberly Elizabeth Baldwin Mar 2026

Stream Biofilms In West Tennessee Provide Insights As A Tool For Informing Restoration Practices, Kimberly Elizabeth Baldwin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Many streams in West Tennessee, USA, have been heavily modified for agriculture or flood prevention purposes, which can result in altered stream microbial community dynamics. There is little research comparing biological and physicochemical dynamics between disturbed and natural streams, especially in West Tennessee. There is a need to understand how restoration efforts may impact microbial communities and thus ecosystem processing. Here, we investigate the community and assembly dynamics of microbial communities (prokaryotic and eukaryotic) in a degraded stream slated for restoration by 1) comparing this disturbed site to an undisturbed control stream, 2) examining seasonal variation of biofilms and riparian …

Aldo Faldi's 12 Brevi Studi Seriali And The Modern Solo Oboe Tradition, Michael Isaac Ripple Mar 2026

Aldo Faldi's 12 Brevi Studi Seriali And The Modern Solo Oboe Tradition, Michael Isaac Ripple

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation examines the pedagogical and musical significance of Aldo Faldi’s 12 Brevi Studi Seriali per Oboe within the broader context of twentieth- and twenty-first-century solo oboe repertoire. While etude literature has historically functioned as a bridge between technical study and performance practice, the standard oboe etude canon remains largely rooted in nineteenth-century tonal idioms and does not adequately address the technical and perceptual demands of post-tonal music. Through detailed analytical study and comparative repertoire analysis, this project argues that Faldi’s etudes provide a systematic pedagogical framework for developing the skills required in contemporary oboe performance. These studies isolate and …

Offside Trap: African Football As A Mirror Of Global Structural Inequality, Ellen Busolo Milimu Mar 2026

Offside Trap: African Football As A Mirror Of Global Structural Inequality, Ellen Busolo Milimu

Journal of Global South Sport Studies

Football in Africa, as a legacy of European colonialism, is undeniable. The export of football through colonization resulted in the popularization of the sport while also creating a system of economic exploitation and impoverishment that is the cause of considerable problems for African society. This economic system positioned African  countries as dependents of former colonizers even after achieving independence. Sports, specifically football, provide a unique perspective to explore the no-win     situation in which Africa exists within the global economic system. Always chasing the elusive ‘development’ goal that is dictated by others and shifts without the interests of African countries. The …

Artificial Intelligence And Music Creativity: The Human Element And An Exploration Of Possibilities, Benjamin J. Guerrero, Raffaella Borasi, David Miller, Blaire Koerner, Zenon Borys, Yu Jung Han, Rachel Roberts Mar 2026

Artificial Intelligence And Music Creativity: The Human Element And An Exploration Of Possibilities, Benjamin J. Guerrero, Raffaella Borasi, David Miller, Blaire Koerner, Zenon Borys, Yu Jung Han, Rachel Roberts

Journal of the Association for Technology in Music Instruction

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is widely recognized as a potential game-changer for music-making. However, the direction of these changes and the extent of their impact on the music field will depend on how musicians use AI, which partly hinges on their perceptions of AI and their willingness to engage with it. Debates are ongoing about AI’s impact on creative fields, and we anticipate that musicians’ views on these matters will significantly influence their readiness to incorporate AI into their work. We interviewed 43 participants who use technology in various roles across different music genres to gain insight into their experiences with …

Maternal Respiratory Syncytial Virus Vaccination And Preterm Birth A Utah Statewide Retrospective Cohort Study, Amy Solsman, Torri Metz, Josh Benton, Shana Godfred-Cato

Knowledge and Creativity Expo

We conducted a statewide, retrospective cohort study to evaluate the association between maternal receipt of the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccine and preterm birth. All individuals who delivered a singleton neonate in Utah and were between 32 0/7 and 36 6/7 weeks of gestation from September 2023 to February 2024 were included and followed up until delivery. Overall, 2,733 of 24,213 individuals (11.3%) received the vaccine. Vaccine receipt was associated with lower odds of preterm birth (5.5% vaccinated group vs 6.8% unvaccinated group, adjusted odds ratio 0.80, 95% CI, 0.67–0.95). Receipt of the RSV vaccine was not associated with any …

Changes In Land, Ocean, Atmospheric Parameters Associated With The 2025 Myanmar (Mw 7.7) Earthquake, Feng Jing, Akshansa Chauhan, Ashwani Raju, Ramesh P. Singh

Mathematics, Physics, and Computer Science Faculty Articles and Research

Multiple parameters associated with the land, atmosphere, and ocean were analyzed to study short-term and immediate pre-earthquake changes associated with the 28 March 2025 Myanmar earthquake (Mw 7.7). Anomalous clear-sky outgoing longwave radiation (ClrOLR) and trace gases (CH₄, CO, and O₃) were detected within two months prior to the mainshock. Vertical changes at different pressure levels suggest a possible underground source. High-temporal-resolution observations of the infrared brightness temperature and surface air pressure revealed short-lived fluctuations shortly before the earthquake, which may reflect localized stress adjustments and surface latent heat flux release during the final stage of earthquake preparation. In the …

(W)Holistic Approaches: Empowering The Whole Of Child, Annette Johnson, Tiarnah Hamlin, Jack Lundie-Jenkins, Erin King, Karen Malyon, Jennifer Cartmel

International Journal of Playwork Practice

Holistic approaches are an evolving pedagogy in the Outside of School Hours Care (OSHC) sector that, despite its recognised value, remain an elusive practice for many educators. This ambiguity has been acknowledged in My Time Our Place (MTOP): Framework for School Age Care in Australia 2.0 (AGDE, 2022). In alignment with this process, the ability for OSHC and extended learning to empower children’s self-identities is fundamental to supporting their holistic development. In a world emerging from the coronavirus pandemic, the ongoing impacts on children – the result of physical separation and societal stressors – cannot be ignored. Accordingly, the child’s …
