Examining The Pilgrims’ Experience: Communitas Along The Camino De Santiago, Snežana Brumec Jun 2023

Examining The Pilgrims’ Experience: Communitas Along The Camino De Santiago, Snežana Brumec

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

To what extent does the community formed among pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago correspond to Turner’s concept of communitas? How might pilgrimage with significant others differ from individual pilgrimages in the sense of community? This study attempts to answer these questions based on qualitative and quantitative content analysis of 32 travelogues written by pilgrims who completed the pilgrimage alone or with relatives or friends. The findings show that pilgrims develop an egalitarian and creative community that prevails the notion of a generic bond between people, an intense comradeship and generous common friendliness. In such a community, pilgrims’ behaviour is …

Family Pilgrimage On The Camino De Santiago In Spain: Typology And Impact, Piotr Roszak, Jesus Tanco Jun 2023

Family Pilgrimage On The Camino De Santiago In Spain: Typology And Impact, Piotr Roszak, Jesus Tanco

International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage

This article presents an analysis of contemporary forms of family pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela and prospect for its development after the pandemic of 2021-2022. Based on information about family pilgrimages in Spain, we examine its therapeutic benefits, its challenges and difficulties, and its place within competing forms of pilgrimage. The ‘family modality’ extends to pilgrimage within any intentional family, such as one’s academic and professional companions, recovering addicts traveling for mutual support, like-minded religious confraternities sharing a communal experience of the journey, and pilgrims trekking on behalf of family members left behind as a manifestation of voluntary surrogate pilgrimage.

The Myth Of Meritocracy: The Indian Caste System's Effect On Indian Immigration And Naturalization In Early 20th Century United States, Aashna Nilawar

Helene Lafrance Library Undergraduate Research Award

"The Myth of Meritocracy" delves into the consequences of the Indian caste system on immigration and naturalization in the United States during the 1910s to 1940s. It also examines the effects of the 1965 U.S. immigration reforms on post-Cold War era South Asian immigration. In addition to the challenges encountered by Asian immigrants in general, South Asian immigrants confronted distinct hurdles linked to their hereditary social class, which significantly influenced their access to American naturalization rights. To overcome racial limitations on naturalization in the early 20th century, South Asian immigrants contended that their caste, Aryan ancestry, and colonial subjecthood aligned …

Equitable Compensation To Attract And Retain Qualified Teachers In High-Need Alaska Public Schools, Matthew Berman, Dayna Jean Defeo Jun 2023

Equitable Compensation To Attract And Retain Qualified Teachers In High-Need Alaska Public Schools, Matthew Berman, Dayna Jean Defeo

ISER Articles

Measuring the appropriate level of teacher compensation for different working conditions requires overcoming a number of empirical challenges, including defining and measuring differences in qualifications, effects of non-wage compensation, financial constraints, and lack of market clearing. We address those challenges in a study of teacher compensation in Alaska’s 462 public schools in 53 districts. Each of our three linked empirical specifications produces a set of different compensation adjustments needed to offset differences in working conditions across schools and communities. However, an overall pattern is clear: if districts wish to attract and retain teachers of similar qualifications across all schools, schools …

Excerpt:

'The followers of Swami Shri Haridasji live in the sand-laden compound of Tatiasthan and assemble in song with devotees from the general public every evening. This musical tradition is called samaaj gaayan. They first sing facing the deity and then turn to their teacher, who arrives at the assembly a little later. Mobile phones and other technology are strictly forbidden.

This poem is an out-take from my ongoing ethnographic research in Vrindavan—the sacred geography of Krishna worship in the Bhakti tradition in northern India. This poem came from the evenings spent in the Tatiasthan shrine watching evening musical performances, …

Analysis Of Ostds Failure Potential Due To Sea-Level Rise And Other Inundation Factors: An Integrated Geo-Spatial Analysis, Alec Colarusso Jun 2023

Analysis Of Ostds Failure Potential Due To Sea-Level Rise And Other Inundation Factors: An Integrated Geo-Spatial Analysis, Alec Colarusso

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

While many aspects of climate change are well-studied, the vulnerability of Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems (OSTDS) to sea-level rise (SLR) has not been thoroughly examined despite the potentially significant environmental impacts, including nutrient and pathogen loading. Research gaps include the need to determine the suitability of models to predict groundwater inundation due to SLR and the consequent impact on OSTDS. As such, this study aims to compare Bathtub/hydrostatic and physics-based/MODFLOW/3D numerical modeling methods of simulating groundwater inundation from SLR to identify OSTDS vulnerability to failure due to a reduction in the height of the vadose zone (saturation or …

Understanding Computational Thinking In The Gameplay Of The African Songo Board Game, Rebecca Y. Bayeck Jun 2023

Understanding Computational Thinking In The Gameplay Of The African Songo Board Game, Rebecca Y. Bayeck

Instructional Technology and Learning Sciences Faculty Publications

Computational thinking is a necessary skill for the 21st century. While previously examined in computer-rich settings, researchers are increasingly studying computational thinking in unplugged environments such as board games. Focusing on the African board game Songo, this study shows that computational thinking practices are embedded in Songo board gameplay and interact with the cultural context. The study also reveals a computing practice peculiar to Songo gameplay, songoputation. This paper suggests that researchers can benefit from exploring computational thinking and computing practices beyond board games in western contexts.

England’S Early Years Foundation Stage (Eyfs) Framework: Towards A Minor Literature, Claire Walsh Jun 2023

England’S Early Years Foundation Stage (Eyfs) Framework: Towards A Minor Literature, Claire Walsh

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

In the mid 1970s, the philosopher Gilles Deleuze and psychoanalyst Felix Guattari radically conceptualised the novelist Kafka in terms of marginal subjectivity. Their book, “Kafka: towards a minor literature” (1975/1986) was a consideration of minor thought as “an agent of transformative experimentation and collective awareness” (El Moncef, 2020) within a major language. Considering such agency, this paper, nearly fifty years on from Kafka, looks to extend our gaze beyond Deleuze and Guattari’s original theory towards ‘the people [who] are missing’ (Deleuze, 1989) - the minor readers. Evolving the concept of the marginal, the paper considers the major language of statutory …

Revisiting Great Basin Bristlecone Pine (Pinus Longaeva) In The Stansbury Mountains, Utah, David R. Burchfield, Otto W. De Groff, Matthew F. Bekker, Stanley G. Kitchen, Steven L. Petersen Jun 2023

Revisiting Great Basin Bristlecone Pine (Pinus Longaeva) In The Stansbury Mountains, Utah, David R. Burchfield, Otto W. De Groff, Matthew F. Bekker, Stanley G. Kitchen, Steven L. Petersen

Western North American Naturalist

Great Basin bristlecone pine (Pinus longaeva D.K. Bailey) presence in the Stansbury Mountains of north-central Utah has been reported prior to the year 2020, but these reports lack adequate population characterization and the delineation of distinct stands of trees. In summer 2020, we identified and documented the presence of 5 separate stands of bristlecone pine in the Stansbury Mountains. These stands are removed from the nearest bristlecone populations in other mountain ranges by a distance of approximately 120 km; as such, they represent a unique outlier population of the species. We used GPS data to create a geographic information …

First Shasta Ground Sloth (Nothrotheriops; Xenarthra) From The Eastern Great Basin, Nevada, Jim I. Mead, Sandra L. Swift, H. Gregory Mcdonald, Steven D. Emslie Jun 2023

First Shasta Ground Sloth (Nothrotheriops; Xenarthra) From The Eastern Great Basin, Nevada, Jim I. Mead, Sandra L. Swift, H. Gregory Mcdonald, Steven D. Emslie

Western North American Naturalist

We present the first record of the Shasta ground sloth (Nothrotheriops shastensis) for the eastern Great Basin. The single right upper second molariform was recovered from the back dirt pile of archaeological test pits excavated during the 1960s and 1970s in Smith Creek Cave, northern Snake Range, White Pine County, Nevada. The precise age of the specimen is indeterminate, although all sediment layers in the area produced radiocarbon dates older than 11,000 cal BP; thus, the specimen is considered of the Rancholabrean Land Mammal Age. All previous accounts of this sloth in the Great Basin are from its …

“I Don't Know Where The Lesbians Are”: Exploring Lgbtq+ Women’S Experiences Of Place And Community, Ashley M. Green

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines LGBTQ+ women’s experiences of place and community in Central Florida. Through the use of in-depth interviews and virtual ethnography, I begin to answer the following questions: 1. To what extent does geographic location contextualize how LGBTQ+ women experience place and community?, 2. How do LGBTQ+ women within a similar geographic location utilize virtual spaces for the purpose of building community?, and 3. How are the intersections of gender, race, and sexuality significant to LGBTQ+ women’s experiences of place and community? This project provides a glimpse into the phenomenon of consuming community, which speaks to the ways in …

Morgan, Vivian King. DLS. The University of Memphis. May 2023. Dika Saouvre (In Plain Sight): A Case Study of Romani Marginalization in Modern Athens. Colin Chapell, PhD. The Romani people have been subjected to discrimination and marginalization in all aspects of their lives since the Middle Ages. While there has been considerable research conducted on the Romani, especially those living in the Eastern European countries that were once part of the Soviet Union, there has been minimal research pertaining to Roma marginalization in Greece. Like Roma throughout the European Union, Greek Roma consist of heterogenous groups with different experiences and …

A Healthcare Claims Investigation Of Parasomnia Epidemiology, Associations With Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, And Rem Sleep Behavior Disorder Correlates, Anh Thy Ha Nguyen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Parasomnias, such as sleepwalking and nightmare disorder, are abnormal behaviors and emotions emanating from sleep or wake to sleep transitions. Parasomnias can lead to significant adverse outcomes – sleepwalking can result in injuries and hospitalizations, frequent nightmares are associated with self-harm and suicidal thoughts, and rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is linked to neurodegeneration. Despite a history of fascination with abnormal sleep behaviors in the general and medical communities, epidemiologic understanding of parasomnias remains limited, in part due to their amnestic nature and presumption that they are benign childhood problems. This work used the MarketScan® Commercial Claims and …

Political Economy Of The Middle East: Historiography And The Making Of An Episteme, Jordan Rothschild Jun 2023

Political Economy Of The Middle East: Historiography And The Making Of An Episteme, Jordan Rothschild

Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal

The Great Divergence accelerated a process of Western European states dominating the majority of the world’s geography and people economically and geopolitically. Given the stakes of this shift and its ramifications for all of the history that followed, and the significant way that the divide continues to shape our world, this phenomenon is subject to considerable debate within the historiography. This paper uses the Great Divergence as a departure point to analyze the different schools of political economic history, from the flawed sociologies of the early 20th century theorists to the World Systems Theorists and beyond. A key aspect of …

Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal

This paper attempts to provide an insight of asceticism and its development in Egypt through the literal work Athanasius's Life of Antony. It sets out to explain how the peculiar geography and environment in Egypt contributed to the development of asceticism and how the practices of St. Antony reflected the contemporary ideas on soul and body.

It’S Complicated: Field Hockey And Feminism In The United States, Dara Anhouse Jun 2023

It’S Complicated: Field Hockey And Feminism In The United States, Dara Anhouse

Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal

Only in the United States is field hockey considered a "women's sport," and the story of its unusual transformation of male-dominated “hockey” from the British Isles to women’s-only “field hockey” in America reveals a deeper connection between sport, feminism, and society. A symbol of unlocked freedom for the "New Woman" at the turn of the twentieth century, under Title IX the sport becomes a case study in how gender is reproduced in modern society.

The Complete Mitochondrial Genome Of Eulaelaps Huzhuensis (Mesostigmata: Haemogamasidae), Hui-Juan Yang, Zhi-Hua Yang, Tian-Guang Ren, Wen-Ge Dong

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials

Some mites of the family Haemogamasidae can transmit a variety of zoonotic diseases and have important public health and safety implications. Currently, however, little attention has been paid to molecular data of Haemogamasidae species, limiting our understanding of their evolutionary and phylogenetic relationships. In this study, the complete mitochondrial genome of Eulaelaps huzhuensis was determined for the first time, and its genomic information was analyzed in detail. The mitochondrial genome of E. huzhuensis is 14,872 bp in length with 37 genes and two control regions. The base composition showed a distinct AT preference. Twelve protein-coding genes have a typical ATN …

Transport Of Suspended Sediments And Phosphorus In An Agricultural Watershed: A Case Study Of The Money Creek Watershed, Central Illinois., Oghenevwede Efobo Jun 2023

Transport Of Suspended Sediments And Phosphorus In An Agricultural Watershed: A Case Study Of The Money Creek Watershed, Central Illinois., Oghenevwede Efobo

Theses and Dissertations

Suspended sediment and phosphorus are among the major pollutants of stream ecosystems. Suspended sediment has been documented as vector for nutrient transport, specifically phosphorus, in streams. Sources of suspended sediments include agricultural fields, channel sediments, and streambanks. Suspended sediments within the stream channel could fill up reservoirs over time thus, reducing reservoir storage capacity. Suspended sediments can cover breeding and nesting areas of aquatic habitats, leading to their displacements. Sources of phosphorus include point sources such as wastewater treatment plants and industrial effluent, and nonpoint sources such as agricultural fields and urban runoff. Phosphorus is a limiting nutrient in freshwater …

Proving Intra-Racial Discrimination In The U.S. And Canada: The Room For Making The Artificial Distinction Between Genealogical Relatedness And Race, Martin Kwan Jun 2023

Proving Intra-Racial Discrimination In The U.S. And Canada: The Room For Making The Artificial Distinction Between Genealogical Relatedness And Race, Martin Kwan

University of Miami Inter-American Law Review

This article takes the role of the Devil’s advocate in order to question the judicial willingness to distinguish “race” from comparable notions. It suggests that, depending on the exact circumstances, a defendant can make an arguable case that the alleged intra–racial discrimination is motivated by perceived genealogical relatedness, but not because of belonging to the same “race.” Factually, the defendant claims to believe in being remotely genealogically related to the plaintiff. This is not unworthy of credence, because it is academically recognized that modern genealogy and root tracing can be an imaginative, forged exercise. Legally, this argument is supportable because …

The Law Of The Territories Of The United States In Puerto Rico, The Oldest Colony In The World, Carlos Iván Gorrín Peralta Jun 2023

The Law Of The Territories Of The United States In Puerto Rico, The Oldest Colony In The World, Carlos Iván Gorrín Peralta

University of Miami Inter-American Law Review

The territorial law and policy of the United States changed towards the turn of the 20th century, as territorial expansion was no longer motivated by the extension of national borders, but by geopolitical, strategic and economic objectives. The new territories acquired in the Spanish American war were different from those previously annexed. The resulting constitutional doctrine of the Insular Cases differentiated the previous incorporated territories from the new unincorporated territories, which were not destined to be part of the U.S. nor to be admitted as new states. Despite purported changes in the relation with the United States in 1950-1952, Puerto …

Shifting From A System Of Grades To A Culture Of Learning: Moving Toward A More Equitable Culture Of Assessment, Jennifer Pamela Mccoy

Theses and Dissertations

Upon identifying a problem of practice centering on students and staff alike focusing on points and grades instead of learning, a small team of teachers were assembled to participate in a cycle of inquiry. The purpose of this cycle of inquiry was to research and test the effectiveness of an intervention related to assessment. The team selected a student self-assessment in the form of an exit slip. Qualitative methods were used to code teacher responses while they implemented the exit slip with students. The team ultimately found that they were able to use the exit slip feedback from the students …

A Reflection On Contemporary Issues Regarding The Death Penalty, Talia R. Harmon, David Taylor, Chelsea Henning Jun 2023

A Reflection On Contemporary Issues Regarding The Death Penalty, Talia R. Harmon, David Taylor, Chelsea Henning

Journal of Criminal Justice and Law

The general trend in the use and application of the death penalty is an increasing movement toward abolition. This is reflected in the repeal of state death penalty laws, state moratoriums, and the reduction in executions and death sentences. The nature of the death penalty debate has also changed in the past two decades. Radelet and Borg (2000) provided an exhaustive overview of the nature of the debate surrounding capital punishment. This comment updates and reflects on some of the crucial contemporary scholarship that has been done in the following six central areas: incapacitation, deterrence, caprice and racial bias, retribution, …

The Role Of Online Discursive Action In Subjects' Emancipatory Repositioning In Egypt: Assault Police Case Study, Christine Saad Guirguis Ma Jun 2023

The Role Of Online Discursive Action In Subjects' Emancipatory Repositioning In Egypt: Assault Police Case Study, Christine Saad Guirguis Ma

Theses and Dissertations

The current study's central question is how social change is discursively constructed. I studied an online feminist social movement that sparked in Egypt on Instagram in July 2020 and labeled "Assault Police." Within the critical social theory and feminism framework, I reviewed the literature on (critical) discourse, social change, and social movements. I tried to unravel the complexity around emancipation as a vital concept in the current study. I located and discussed areas of tension and identified a conceptualization that loosens the theoretical entanglement around it. The research problem sought to specify how the online discursive action facilitated desired …
