Abolition 101: Anthropological Praxis And Education For Liberation, Daniel A. Pizarro Nov 2023

Abolition 101: Anthropological Praxis And Education For Liberation, Daniel A. Pizarro

Southern Anthropologist

Anthropological praxis has the potential to help build and sustain social justice movements by speaking truth to power, exposing structural violence, and questioning communities’ safety and well-being. Anthropologists who engage in praxis interrogate the root causes of oppression by critiquing the discipline’s pedagogies. The current structure of academic institutions encourages scholars to overlook the popular and political education necessary to ameliorate social suffering and advance human rights. This paper explores prison industrial complex (PIC) abolition, a liberatory praxis framework that socio-cultural anthropologists may adopt as active participants in the abolitionist struggle. This case study draws on community-based participatory action research …

"Solo En Inglés": Using Section 208 Of The Voting Rights Act To Combat Modern Literacy Tests, Katie Kitchen

William & Mary Law Review

This Note asserts that section 208 of the VRA [Voting Rights Act] plays a vital role in protecting equitable access for limited English proficient (LEP) voters to cast their ballot. It does so by (1) providing background on protections in the VRA for LEP voters, (2) proposing that section 208 fills the gap left by other provisions of the VRA, and (3) offering recommendations for using section 208 effectively. These recommendations will include (1) amending section 208, (2) furthering education, and (3) increasing individual state actions. Lastly, this Note will argue that section 208 should serve as a model for …

There are over 590,000 bridges dispersed across the roadway network that stretches across the United States alone. Each bridge with a length of 20 feet or greater must be inspected at least once every 24 months, according to the Federal Highway Act (FHWA) of 1968. This research developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-based framework for bridge and road inspection using drones with multiple sensors collecting capabilities. It is not sufficient to conduct inspections of bridges and roads using cameras alone, so the research team utilized an infrared (IR) camera along with a high-resolution optical camera. In many instances, the IR camera …

Climatologies Of Convection Across The United States, Kristofer S. Tuftedal Nov 2023

Climatologies Of Convection Across The United States, Kristofer S. Tuftedal

Electronic Dissertations and Theses, 2010-current

Tropospheric convection is one of the most important contributors to the Earth’s climate system through its transport of heat, moisture, and momentum. The hazards associated with convection (i.e., tornadoes, hail, lightning, flooding, damaging wind, etc.) are one of the largest threats to life and property. Despite the importance and wide-reaching impacts of convection, many processes both internal and external to storms are not well understood. One way to elucidate convective processes in a bulk sense is through the use of large climatologies. Radar data provide both microphysical and kinematic information about these convective storms and their hazards on fine spatiotemporal …

We model Coulomb stress transfer (CST) due to 30 strong earthquakes occurring on normal faults since 1509 CE in Calabria, Italy, including the influence of interseismic loading, and compare the results to existing studies of stress interaction from the Central and Southern Apennines, Italy. The three normal fault systems have different geometries and long‐term slip‐rates. We investigate the extent to which stress transfer can influence the occurrence of future earthquakes and what factors may govern the variability in earthquake recurrence in different fault systems. The Calabrian, Central Apennines, and Southern Apennines fault systems have 91%, 73%, and 70% of faults …

Income Inequality, Social Mobility, And Electoral Participation In The U.S. Counties: Revisiting The Inequality-Participation Nexus, Dongkyu Kim, Mi-Son Kim, Sang-Jic Lee Nov 2023

Income Inequality, Social Mobility, And Electoral Participation In The U.S. Counties: Revisiting The Inequality-Participation Nexus, Dongkyu Kim, Mi-Son Kim, Sang-Jic Lee

Political Science Faculty Publications

Previous research has provided contested hypotheses about the impact of income inequality on electoral participation. This study reexamines the debate between conflict and relative power theories by focusing on a largely ignored factor: social mobility. We argue that social mobility conditions the inequality-participation nexus by alleviating the frustration, class conflict, and efficacy gaps between the rich and the poor that the prevailing theories assume income inequality to create. By utilizing the Cooperative Congressional Election Survey, we test this argument focusing on US counties. Our analysis confirms that the effects of income inequality on citizens’ likelihood of voting vary depending on …

Redesigning A Culturally Responsive Elementary Classroom, Emily Rose Bascelli

Theses & Dissertations

With the roll-out of the Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education framework (2018) for New York State schools, teachers have been given guidelines for creating a welcoming and affirming classroom environment. Therefore, it is critical to focus on how teachers envision and redesign culturally responsive physical classroom spaces. This grounded theory in a bounded case study used culturally responsive pedagogy and teacher positionality to construct a theory about how teachers engage in the redesigning of classrooms. This research collected data from three elementary school teachers who participated in their district’s classroom redesign initiative and self-identified as having culturally responsive goals for their design. …

The State-Led Platformisation Of Financial Services: Frictionless Ecosystems And An Expansive Logic Of "Smartness" In Singapore, Orlando Woods, Tim Bunnell, Lily Kong

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This article explores the role of the state in driving the platformisation of industry, and in doing so offers a counterpoint to scholarship that focusses on the exploitative effects of private sector-led platformisation. That scholarship views platformisation as the latest incarnation of neoliberal urbanism, with the profit-maximising tendencies of the private sector driving the proliferation of platforms throughout everyday life. Notwith- standing, there remains a need to consider alternative models of platformisation. Drawing on 31 interviews with architects of Singapore’s Smart Nation initiative, we consider the state-led platformisation of financial services. We argue that state-led platformisation can open up marketplaces …

The Illusory Infrastructure Of Ink: Machinic Bodies And Epidermic Affects In Singapore, Orlando Woods Nov 2023

The Illusory Infrastructure Of Ink: Machinic Bodies And Epidermic Affects In Singapore, Orlando Woods

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This paper advances recent theorisations of the body-as-infrastructure by exploring the premise that there are multiple bodily infrastructures at play at any one time. It focusses on three infrastructural formations – the body, the skin that encases the body, and tattoos as visual inscriptions on the skin – that jostle against each other for representational primacy. The layering of infrastructure-upon-infrastructure leads to understandings of the self that exist in a state of tension with societal norms and the illusions of self-representation. Indeed, it is the intersecting gazes of society and the self that cause these infrastructures to become disaggregated, and …

Hydrometeorological Analysis Of A Flooding Event In Fujairah Emirate, Ahmad Abed Rabu Albreiki Nov 2023

Hydrometeorological Analysis Of A Flooding Event In Fujairah Emirate, Ahmad Abed Rabu Albreiki

Theses

This thesis conducts an extensive hydrological examination of a flooding event in Fujairah emirate, a partially dry landscape distinguished by its exceptional land utilization and soil composition. This research reveals crucial knowledge about how Fujairah Emirate basins behave hydrologically by fusing land use, land cover classification, hydrological soil groups, weighted Curve Number (CN), maximum discharge computations, and return period evaluations. One fundamental discovery is the significant differences in CN values across the region's basins. These differences highlight the powerful influence of land use and soil composition on the likelihood of water runoff. Basins with urbanization and impermeable surfaces tend to …
