Forgotten Population: The Value Of Correctional Education Programs From The Lived Experiences And Perspectives Of Formerly Incarcerated Women In New York State, Cassandra D. Garrett Nov 2023

Forgotten Population: The Value Of Correctional Education Programs From The Lived Experiences And Perspectives Of Formerly Incarcerated Women In New York State, Cassandra D. Garrett

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

In the United States correctional education programs are part of the federal and state prisons effort to rehabilitate offenders. Prisoners may be rehabilitated by learning skills that can prepare them for reintegration into society post-release. This study explored the value of correctional education programs in assisting formerly incarcerated women in avoiding recidivism in New York state. The qualitative interpretive study used semi-structured interviews of 10 formerly incarcerated women released from a New York state jail or prison during 2017 – 2022. The results of this study suggest that low school attainment is one of the educational risk factors associated with …

Restricted At Home, Impeded Abroad: A Study Of Domestic Human Rights Practices And Women’S Global Economic Power, Cameron Elizabeth Cheatham Nov 2023

Restricted At Home, Impeded Abroad: A Study Of Domestic Human Rights Practices And Women’S Global Economic Power, Cameron Elizabeth Cheatham

Honors College Theses

To what extent does the practice of human rights as universal or culturally relative impact women’s status in the global economy? While there is already evidence to show how women have less power in countries that practice culturally relative human rights, this study aims to explore how the domestic practice of human rights influences women’s global power through an analysis of women’s financial inclusion. Using a cross-national, quantitative analysis, I show that human rights practices in the domestic arena directly impact the economic power of women in the global economy. When human rights practices at home are more universal in …

The Influence Of Nature On Well-Being During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Views From New England Island Residents, Nicole Kras, Jennifer Keenan Nov 2023

The Influence Of Nature On Well-Being During The Covid-19 Pandemic: Views From New England Island Residents, Nicole Kras, Jennifer Keenan

New Community College

Researchers are beginning to explore the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on island populations, but little is known about the experiences of the residents of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard in the Northeast region of the United States. In this study, islanders (N=41) provide insight into how spending time in nature influenced their well-being, especially their mental well-being, during this unprecedented time. For the majority of participants, the influence of nature on their well-being increased during the pandemic. Additionally, participants shared benefits of island living such as isolation from the mainland, as well as challenges such as food and supply shortages. …

Evaluating The Response Of Glycine Soja Accessions To Fungal Pathogen Macrophomina Phaseolina During Seedling Growth, Shirley Jacquet, Shuxian Li, Rouf Mian, My Abdelmajid Kassem, Layla Rashad, Sonia Viera, Francisco Reta, Juan Reta, Jiazheng Yuan Nov 2023

Evaluating The Response Of Glycine Soja Accessions To Fungal Pathogen Macrophomina Phaseolina During Seedling Growth, Shirley Jacquet, Shuxian Li, Rouf Mian, My Abdelmajid Kassem, Layla Rashad, Sonia Viera, Francisco Reta, Juan Reta, Jiazheng Yuan

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Charcoal rot caused by the fungal pathogen Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid is one of various devastating soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) diseases, which can severely reduce crop yield. The investigation into the genetic potential for charcoal rot resistance of wild soybean (Glycine soja) accessions will enrich our understanding of the impact of soybean domestication on disease resistance; moreover, the identified charcoal rot-resistant lines can be used to improve soybean resistance to charcoal rot. The objective of this study was to evaluate the resistance of wild soybean accessions to M. phaseolina at the seedling stage and thereby select the disease-resistant lines. …

Gender And The Social Structure Of Exclusion In U.S. Corporate Law, Afra Afsharipour, Matthew Jennejohn Nov 2023

Gender And The Social Structure Of Exclusion In U.S. Corporate Law, Afra Afsharipour, Matthew Jennejohn

University of Chicago Law Review

Law develops through collective effort. A single judge may write a judicial opinion, but only after an (often large) group of lawyers chooses litigation strategies, crafts arguments, and presents their positions. Despite their important role in the legal process, these networks of lawyers are almost uniformly overlooked in legal scholarship—a black box in a discipline otherwise obsessed with institutional detail.

This Article focuses on a particularly crucial way that the structure of professional networks may shape the path of the law. Prior qualitative research suggests that networks are an important source of information, mentoring, and opportunity, and that those social …

Shifting Taxonomic And Functional Community Composition Of Rivers Under Land Use Change, Kai Chen, Stephen R. Midway, Brandon K. Peoples, Beixin Wang, Julian D. Olden Nov 2023

Shifting Taxonomic And Functional Community Composition Of Rivers Under Land Use Change, Kai Chen, Stephen R. Midway, Brandon K. Peoples, Beixin Wang, Julian D. Olden

Faculty Publications

Land use intensification has led to conspicuous changes in plant and animal communities across the world. Shifts in trait-based functional composition have recently been hypothesized to manifest at lower levels of environmental change when compared to species-based taxonomic composition; however, little is known about the commonalities in these responses across taxonomic groups and geographic regions. We investigated this hypothesis by testing for taxonomic and geographic similarities in the composition of riverine fish and insect communities across gradients of land use in major hydrological regions of the conterminous United States. We analyzed an extensive data set representing 556 species and 33 …

Gnsi Decision Brief: Integrated Deterrence: What Is It Good For?, Tad Schnaufer Nov 2023

Gnsi Decision Brief: Integrated Deterrence: What Is It Good For?, Tad Schnaufer

GNSI Decision Briefs

The Biden administration introduced the concept of Integrated Deterrence (ID) in its 2022 National Security Strategy (NSS). As the report, No I in Team, states, “Integrated deterrence seeks to integrate all tools of national power across domains, geography, and spectrum of conflict, while working with allies and partners.” The Department of Defense’s (DoD) National Defense Strategy (NDS) and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s National Military Strategy (NMS) further defined the military’s role in this concept. Critics have noted deficiencies with the whole-of- government approach that ID demands while failing to specify coordination methods across agencies. That …

Sierra forest resilience and aspen restoration

Anne Marie Holt

While searching for hidden aspen stands on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada, I scan the forest for a faint shimmer. The distinctive quaking of the aspen is a dead giveaway for the location. Rarely found in contiguous stands, aspen appear at meadow fringes, along streams, or where snow may persist. These seral stands need periodic disturbance to trigger aspen regeneration and to reset conifer growth. Without such events, the conifers continue to overtop the aspen until none remain. Western slope aspen may be sparse but are important habitat for …

Economic Equity And People With Disabilities: Development And Characterization Of A Novel Index, Bhavneet Walia, Katherine Mcdonald, Joy Hammel, Lex Frieden, Michael Morris, Barry Whaley, Vinh Nguyen Nov 2023

Economic Equity And People With Disabilities: Development And Characterization Of A Novel Index, Bhavneet Walia, Katherine Mcdonald, Joy Hammel, Lex Frieden, Michael Morris, Barry Whaley, Vinh Nguyen

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Here we develop two new social indices: The ADA PARC Absolute Economic Opportunity Index and the ADA PARC Relative Economic Opportunity Index. These indices allow us novel examinations of economic equity between people with and without disabilities within a U.S. State and between people with disabilities in different states using aggregations of multiple component economic indicators. These represent the first efforts to offer U.S. indices of this focus, an important development given the distinct economic needs of people with disabilities and the value in accounting for distinct national policies. The indices rely on U.S. Census and other data on economic …

Hide Your Distance: Privacy Risks And Protection In Spatial Accessibility Analysis, Liyue Fan, Luca Bonomi Nov 2023

Hide Your Distance: Privacy Risks And Protection In Spatial Accessibility Analysis, Liyue Fan, Luca Bonomi

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Measuring spatial accessibility to healthcare resources and facilities has long been an important problem in public health. For example, during disease outbreaks, sharing spatial accessibility data such as individual travel distances to health facilities is vital to policy making and designing effective interventions. However, sharing these data may raise privacy concerns, as information about individual data contributors (e.g., health status and residential address) may be disclosed. In this work, we investigate those unintended information leakage in spatial accessibility analysis. Specifically, we are interested in understanding whether sharing data for spatial accessibility computations may disclose individual participation (i.e., membership inference) and …

Advancing Equity And Congestion Relief: An Investigation Of On-Demand Shared Rides For Underserved Populations, Ipek Nese Sener, Austin Sibu, Audrey Cabay Nov 2023

Advancing Equity And Congestion Relief: An Investigation Of On-Demand Shared Rides For Underserved Populations, Ipek Nese Sener, Austin Sibu, Audrey Cabay

Research Reports

Transportation network companies (TNCs) and microtransit are changing the way people travel by providing dynamic, on-demand mobility that can supplement public transit and personal vehicle use. However, heavy use of such motorized vehicles among all sociodemographic populations could contribute to increased vehicle miles traveled, congestion, and/or greenhouse gas emissions. To balance the objectives of increasing mobility and access for underserved communities while simultaneously mitigating the potential adverse impacts of increased motor vehicle use, well-designed policy strategies, such as pooling and first-mile/last-mile linkages, are needed. In this study, we applied a mixed-method approach to examine on-demand transportation services for underserved populations …

Agricultural Groundcover Update October 2023, Justin Laycock Nov 2023

Agricultural Groundcover Update October 2023, Justin Laycock

Natural resources published reports

Summary

  • About 98% of the grainbelt had adequate vegetative groundcover (more than 50%) to prevent wind erosion in October 2023. This amount of groundcover is normal at the end of spring and pre-harvest in most areas.
  • There was a larger than average area with 51–60% groundcover, and groundcover in these areas is expected to reduce over summer to below 50%.
  • About 2% of the grainbelt (293,000 ha) had less than 50% groundcover, which is inadequate to prevent wind erosion. Mullewa to Morawa Ag Soil Zone had the highest risk of wind erosion and 8% of this farmland had inadequate groundcover. …

Material Culture In The Mediterranean: An Exploration And Examination Of Anti-Judaic And Antisemitic Spanish Medieval Cultural History, Madison Elizabeth Tarleton Nov 2023

Material Culture In The Mediterranean: An Exploration And Examination Of Anti-Judaic And Antisemitic Spanish Medieval Cultural History, Madison Elizabeth Tarleton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Author Gavin Langmuir produced two monographs during his career, both published in 1990. Across both texts, one a proper monograph and one a compilation of essays, he offers a bifurcation of anti-Judaism and antisemitism. These texts illuminate his definitions of the terms and his differentiations on the basis of reason and rationality. Using the bones of these theories, I propose a different kind of bifurcation of these terms as it relates to Mediterranean (medieval) material culture using a cultural historical lens. By applying Gavin Langmuir's theoretical model of nonrational anti-Judaism and irrational antisemitism to material culture, I argue that visual …

Widespread Sympatry In A Species-Rich Clade Of Marine Fishes (Carangoidei), Jessica R. Glass, Richard C. Harrington, Peter F. Cowman, Brant C. Faircloth, Thomas J. Near Nov 2023

Widespread Sympatry In A Species-Rich Clade Of Marine Fishes (Carangoidei), Jessica R. Glass, Richard C. Harrington, Peter F. Cowman, Brant C. Faircloth, Thomas J. Near

Faculty Publications

A universal paradigm describing patterns of speciation across the tree of life has been debated for decades. In marine organisms, inferring patterns of speciation using contemporary and historical patterns of biogeography is challenging due to the deficiency of species-level phylogenies and information on species' distributions, as well as conflicting relationships between species' dispersal, range size and co-occurrence. Most research on global patterns of marine fish speciation and biogeography has focused on coral reef or pelagic species. Carangoidei is an ecologically important clade of marine fishes that use coral reef and pelagic environments. We used sequence capture of 1314 ultraconserved elements …

Looking Back To Look Forward: Exploring Crenshaw’S Political, Structural, And Representational Intersectionality In Sport, Allison Anders Ph.D., James M. Devita, Leslee A. Fisher, Chris Corr, Christina L. Myers Nov 2023

Looking Back To Look Forward: Exploring Crenshaw’S Political, Structural, And Representational Intersectionality In Sport, Allison Anders Ph.D., James M. Devita, Leslee A. Fisher, Chris Corr, Christina L. Myers

Faculty Publications

Engaging with Kimberlé Crenshaw’s concept of intersectionality, the authors (re)turn to its genesis in critical race theory (CRT) and specifically, its forms of structural intersectionality, political intersectionality, and representational intersectionality. Discussing each form in relation to contemporary issues in sport that Black women and women of Color navigate, they argue that Crenshaw’s intersectionality provides additional compelling layers of engagement with existing intersectional scholarship and scholarship about activism in sport, invites structural and discursive change through intersectional policies and practice, and promotes coalition building toward intersectional racial justice in sport.

K–12 Teachers Perspectives On Mobile Technology Integration: A Qualitative Study, Steven Justin Bingham Nov 2023

K–12 Teachers Perspectives On Mobile Technology Integration: A Qualitative Study, Steven Justin Bingham

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research

The purpose of this qualitative case study was to develop an understanding of mobile technology integration in K-12 classrooms from the perspective of classroom teachers during the 2022-2023 school year. The increase in mobile technologies being utilized in schools made it imperative to understand how mobile devices are being integrated into the classroom from the teacher’s perspective. The central research question was, how do teachers at K-12 schools in the Midwest describe their perception and usage of mobile technology integration in teaching and learning?

The data collection consisted of semi-structured interviews with fourteen participants from one school district in the …

Creative Placemaking And Empowered Participatory Governance, Amber Wichowsky, Jennifer Gaul-Stout, Jill Mcnew-Birren Nov 2023

Creative Placemaking And Empowered Participatory Governance, Amber Wichowsky, Jennifer Gaul-Stout, Jill Mcnew-Birren

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Creative placemaking has become a popular strategy to revitalize distressed neighborhoods. Who is empowered to participate in these projects and in what capacity? Do such efforts reduce or reinforce existing race-class inequities in community development? Drawing on three years of participant observations, interviews with stakeholders, and analyses of project reports, we use Archon Fung's “Democracy Cube” framework to evaluate a creative placemaking initiative in one of the most segregated cities in the United States. We find that over the course of the project, participation patterns shifted from highly diffuse across many individuals with varied roles to highly concentrated, such that …

Cross-Watershed Horizontal Ecological Compensation System : Comparative Examples From China And Germany, Yanyao Yang Nov 2023

Cross-Watershed Horizontal Ecological Compensation System : Comparative Examples From China And Germany, Yanyao Yang

SOC 605 Comparative Social Policy Research Project - Student Works

In recent years, horizontal ecological compensation in the Yangtze River basin is a new policy for protecting the ecology. But it still has shortcomings in policy implementation. In contrast, Germany, which reached an ecological compensation agreement with the Czech Republic on the Elbe River as early as the 1990s, is a worthy reference object for China. Therefore, this study systematically reviews the literature on horizontal ecological compensation in China and abroad. It finds that the relevant literature on ecological compensation policies lacks composite research using research methods that combine qualitative and quantitative analysis. So, this study uses social network analysis …
