Science Literacy And Popular Culture: Forensic Anthropology In Application And Fiction, Autumn L. Baker Nov 2023

Science Literacy And Popular Culture: Forensic Anthropology In Application And Fiction, Autumn L. Baker

PSU McNair Scholars Online Journal

This exploratory research examines the discussion of “race” in popular cultural media in a forensic anthropological context. The TV series Bones was used as a sample site for a cultural comparative analysis. This research critically compares popular culture understandings of “race” or ancestral heritage as depicted in Bones with a specific, newly developed method that forensic anthropologists apply in actual lab procedures in combination with other methods to determine ancestral heritage as depicted in textbooks. This research project has two phases. The first phase is a media analysis of discussions and depictions of ancestral heritage in episodes of Bones; the …

The Establishment And Shaping Of The Education System And National Identity In Manchukuo, Tianyang Lei

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis studies the education system and national identity of Manchukuo the nationstate (1932-1945). In September of 1932, the Japanese army staged the "Mukden Incident," a bombing of a railway line near Shenyang that was used as a pretext for the invasion of Manchuria. Following the incident, the Japanese established the state of Manchukuo with the last emperor of China, Puyi, as its nominal head of state. The establishment of Manchukuo marked the beginning of Japan's aggressive expansion in Asia and its militarization of the region. It also marked the start of Japan's effective control over large portions of Northeast …

Exploring Crowdsourcing Accountability For Mapping Antarctica: A Case Study Using 5 Years Of Social Media Data, Ayşe Gi̇z Gülnerman Gengeç

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

The continent of Antarctica is one of the most challenging regions in terms of generating and updating geodata. Extensive research has been conducted on geodata acquisition, primarily focusing on earth observation satellites and local surveys in polar regions. Earth observation satellites offer limited spatial, temporal, and semantic data, while local surveys are constrained by polar regions' size and challenging conditions. This article delves into the crowdsourced data, aiming to significantly enhance geodata contribution in polar regions beyond current methods. To our knowledge, this study is the first of its kind to address social media data, a form of crowdsourcing, specifically …

Ethnicity, Identity, And Conceptualizing Community In Indian Ocean East Africa, Daren E. Ray Nov 2023

Ethnicity, Identity, And Conceptualizing Community In Indian Ocean East Africa, Daren E. Ray

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

This volume explores how the people of littoral East Africa imagined and reimagined their communities over two millennia of engagement with Indian Ocean transformations—from the settlement of Bantu speakers near the coast around the first century CE to their participation in transoceanic commerce, imperial rivalries, colonial projects, and decolonization movements in the mid-twentieth century. Like other histories of the Indian Ocean, it emphasizes the circulation of people and ideas, but its cis-oceanic approach demonstrates how these littoral communities continued to integrate strategies from those in Africa’s interior as well as from people who traveled the ocean.

The book also clarifies …

Equitable Considerations In The Delimitation Of The Continental Shelf, Murat Sümer Nov 2023

Equitable Considerations In The Delimitation Of The Continental Shelf, Murat Sümer

International Law Studies

The delimitation of the continental shelf is often regarded as one of the most controversial inter-State delimitation disputes due to the significant advantages it can offer to coastal States. Since the conception of the continental shelf regime, i.e., the 1945 Truman Proclamation, equitable considerations have been central to the delimitation of this zone, which has been consistently reflected in the jurisprudence and in UNCLOS.

As an umbrella instrument with a framework character, UNCLOS usually suffices to stipulate the fundamental norms and principles. This was also the case for the delimitation of the continental shelf. Article 83, whilst not prescribing a …

Antibiotic Resistance At Sequence, Population, And Global Scales, Kevin Blake Nov 2023

Antibiotic Resistance At Sequence, Population, And Global Scales, Kevin Blake

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Antibiotic resistance (AR) can be studied at multiple scales. The smallest is at the level of the DNA or amino acid sequence of AR genes, characterizing how AR genes are encoded, regulated, and expressed. Next is the level of protein structure, deciphering the 3D shape of AR proteins and how that shape affects function. The next higher scale is that of biochemistry, studying the kinetics of these proteins’ mechanism of action and interactions with drug molecules. The level of populations studies individual species of bacteria that are resistant to specific antibiotics. The next higher scale, of microbiomes, examines many species …

Non-Random Sampling Measures The Occurrence But Not The Strength Of A Textbook Trophic Cascade, Daniel R. Macnulty, Elaine M. Brice, Eric J. Larsen Nov 2023

Non-Random Sampling Measures The Occurrence But Not The Strength Of A Textbook Trophic Cascade, Daniel R. Macnulty, Elaine M. Brice, Eric J. Larsen

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Although sampling the five tallest young aspen in a stand is useful for detecting the occurrence of any aspen recruitment, this technique overestimates the population response of aspen to wolf reintroduction. Our original conclusion that random sampling described a trophic cascade that was weaker than the one described by non-random sampling is unchanged.

Using Genetic Comparisons Of Populations From Arizona, Mexico, And Texas To Investigate Fall Armyworm Migration In The American Southwest, Rodney N. Nagoshi, Ashley E. Tessnow, Yves Carrière, Jeff Bradshaw Dr., Kyle Harrington, Gregory A. Sword, Robert L. Meagher Nov 2023

Using Genetic Comparisons Of Populations From Arizona, Mexico, And Texas To Investigate Fall Armyworm Migration In The American Southwest, Rodney N. Nagoshi, Ashley E. Tessnow, Yves Carrière, Jeff Bradshaw Dr., Kyle Harrington, Gregory A. Sword, Robert L. Meagher

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Fall armyworm (FAW) is a global agricultural pest, causing substantial economic losses in corn and many other crops. Complicating efforts to control this pest is its capacity for long distance flights, which has been described in greatest detail for the central and eastern sections of the United States. FAW infestations are also routinely found in agricultural areas in southern Arizona, which lie beyond the western limits of the mapped migratory pathways. Climate suitability analysis found that the affected Arizona locations cannot support permanent FAW populations, indicating that these FAW most likely arise from annual migrations. A better understanding of this …

Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) As A Predictor Of Adulthood Anxiety States, Emma N. Martin Nov 2023

Adverse Childhood Experiences (Aces) As A Predictor Of Adulthood Anxiety States, Emma N. Martin

High Impact Practices Student Showcase Fall 2023

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are instances of childhood trauma such as caregiver negligence, domestic abuse, and other dysfunctional relationships that a child may encounter inside or outside of their family. Significant evidence suggests ACEs are a predictor of youth complications, such as attentional, learning, emotional, and behavioral deficits. Anxiety and depressive disorders are two of the most costly childhood health conditions. The more instances of ACE indicated, the “higher [the] odds of anxiety or depression,” with an increased likelihood of internalized comorbidities or engagement with self-sabotaging behaviors (Elmore et al., 2020). This study addresses potential precursors to adulthood anxiety using …

The Role Of Geopolitical Risk In Conflict Analysis: Critical Insights, Daniel Rajmil, Lucia Morales Nov 2023

The Role Of Geopolitical Risk In Conflict Analysis: Critical Insights, Daniel Rajmil, Lucia Morales

Other resources

Conflict analysis is a key step to be considered by conflict and peace academics, practitioners and policymakers willing to assess the complexities associated with conflict scenarios. With this aim, this essay explores how Geopolitical Risk, particularly the Geopolitical Risk Index, could be used as a supportive tool for multidisciplinary studies in geoeconomics and geopolitics. The case of the war in Ukraine was taken as an example that guided the research framework. The core research findings show that conflict studies could accommodate geopolitical risk as a conflict analysis tool. However, caution is needed regarding the limitations and complexities associated with econometric …
