The principal limitations of the terms NAFLD and NASH are the reliance on exclusionary confounder terms and the use of potentially stigmatising language. This study set out to determine if content experts and patient advocates were in favor of a change in nomenclature and/or definition. A modified Delphi process was led by three large pan-national liver associations. The consensus was defined a priori as a supermajority (67%) vote. An independent committee of experts external to the nomenclature process made the final recommendation on the acronym and its diagnostic criteria. A total of 236 panelists from 56 countries participated in 4 …

School of Nursing and Midwifery
Background: England’s South-west Peninsula is largely rural, has a high proportion of over 65s, and has areas of rural and coastal deprivation. Rural and low-income populations face inequities at end of life and little is known about the support needs of rural, coastal and low-income communities. Objectives: To understand how to foster community support for dying and grieving well, a regional, multi-sectoral research partnership developed a community engagement programme to explore experiences of seeking support, issues important to people and the community support they valued. This article shares what people told us about the role that communities can play at …

BackgroundApproximately one quarter of people with an intellectual disability (PwID) have epilepsy of whom nearly three-quarters are pharmaco-resistant. There are higher reported neuropsychiatric side-effects to anti-seizure medication (ASM) in this group. Levetiracetam (LEV) is a first-line ASM with a stronger association with neuropsychiatric symptoms for PwID than other ASMs. Brivaracetam (BRV) is a newer ASM. Recent studies suggest a beneficial effect of swapping people who experience neuropsychiatric events with LEV to BRV. However, there is limited evidence of this for PwID. This evaluation analyses real world outcomes of LEV to BRV swap for PwID compared to those without ID.MethodsWe performed …

Constraints And Affordances For Uk Doctors‐In‐Training To Exercise Agency: A Dialogical Analysis, Karen Mattick, Anna Goulding, Daniele Carrieri, Nicola Brennan, Bryan Burford, Gillian Vance, Tim Dornan
Peninsula Medical School
Introduction The goal of medical education is to develop clinicians who have sufficient agency (capacity to act) to practise effectively in clinical workplaces and to learn from work throughout their careers. Little research has focused on experiences of organisational structures and the role of these in constraining or affording agency. The aim of this study was to identify priorities for organisational change, by identifying and analysing key moments of agency described by doctors-in-training. Methods This was a secondary qualitative analysis of data from a large national mixed methods research programme, which examined the work and wellbeing of UK doctors-in-training. Using …

The Other Fifty Percent: Expressions From Special Education Teachers About Why They Persist In The Profession, Laron A. Scott, Christine Powell, Lauren Bruno, Christopher J. Cormier, Joshua P. Taylor, Katherine Brendli
Excelsior: Leadership in Teaching and Learning
We examined reasons special educators are motivated to persist in the profession despite challenges that often lead to attrition for this group. Participants were 21 special education teachers with six or more years of teaching experience across multiple grade levels. Data were collected via the Zoom virtual meeting platform with four focus groups. Semi-structured interview techniques were used, and data were analyzed using deductive coding procedures. Participants shared external, employment, and personal factors associated with Billingsley’s (1993) career decision framework that influenced their persistence, such as supports from school administrators with expertise in special education law, passion for students and …

Demographics And Risk Of Isolation Due To Sea Level Rise In The United States, Kelsea Best, Qian He, Allison C. Reilly, Deb A. Niemeier, Mitchell Anderson, Tom Logan
School of Earth & Environment Departmental Research
Within coastal communities, sea level rise (SLR) will result in widespread intermittent flooding and long-term inundation. Inundation effects will be evident, but isolation that arises from the loss of accessibility to critical services due to inundation of transportation networks may be less obvious. We examine who is most at risk of isolation due to SLR, which can inform community adaptation plans and help ensure that existing social vulnerabilities are not exacerbated. Combining socio-demographic data with an isolation metric, we identify social and economic disparities in risk of isolation under different SLR scenarios (1-10 ft) for the coastal U.S. We show …
Into An Interference Zone: Childbirth And Care Among Mehinako People, Aline Regitano
Into An Interference Zone: Childbirth And Care Among Mehinako People, Aline Regitano
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
This article addresses issues of care and corporeality during gestation, childbirth, the postpartum period, and childcare through a case study conducted with Mehinako people. Among this Amazonian people, care forms the person, having an elementary function in the daily construction of kinship relations through means of affection. A recent trend has caused expressive transformations in the way women experience corporeality and the making of a person: the displacement of birth from the home to hospitals, motivated by women’s fear, desire, and curiosity. In the city, Indigenous women transit through medical institutions, which I propose may be read as interference zones …

Jean E. Jackson: A Pioneering Ethnographer In The Colombian Amazon, Patience Epps, Danilo Paiva Ramos, Flora Dias Cabalzar
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
This essay celebrates the work of Jean E. Jackson, a pioneering female ethnographer who devoted most of her fifty-year career to the Indigenous peoples of Colombia. Her research, represented in an extensive set of publications from the early 1970s to the present, engages with themes of identity, stigma, and social inequality, manifested across a range of contexts. Jackson’s ethnographic contributions include her ground-breaking early work on Indigenous Tukanoan society in the Colombian Vaupés, focusing on the practice of linguistic exogamy (obligatory marriage across language groups) among the Bará people. Later, she expanded her focus to address Indigenous experiences in the …

Children’S Book Publishing In Europe: A Historical Approach, Emily Bruce
History Publications
The aim of this chapter is to trace the development of children’s books on the European continent before the First World War, with an emphasis on the social, economic, and cultural institutions that shaped these traditions. I touch briefly on landmark titles and survey the scholarly literature about European publishing for children, which is both extensive and, for some regions, longstanding. For the sake of brevity, the geographic emphasis is on the better-documented German and French texts with occasional excursions north, south, and east.

This Case Study explores the progress of technology integration in the education sector in Lao PDR in line with …
The Age Of The Onanya - Regarding The Spread Of Ayahuasca Use Throughout The Ucayali Basin, Carlos Suárez-Álvarez
The Age Of The Onanya - Regarding The Spread Of Ayahuasca Use Throughout The Ucayali Basin, Carlos Suárez-Álvarez
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
The spread of ayahuasca shamanism throughout the Upper Amazon has become a matter of debate among scholars since, in 1994, anthropologist Peter Gow formulated the controversial suggestion that it could be a recent phenomenon in the Ucayali basin, usually considered the stronghold of a millenary tradition. Following Gow, Brabec de Mori argued that the Shipibo-Conibo people, a paradigmatic example of the antique practice of ayahuasca shamanism, adopted both the brew and the associated shamanic practices in a “relatively recent” past. Gow and Brabec pointed at the Maynas missions as the origin of this shamanic complex, and the mestizo and Cocama …

Requirements Of Parallel Combat System Based On Gqfd-Coupling Coordination Degree, Zhiming Dong, Bingshan Si, Liang Li
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In view of future intelligent unmanned combat characteristics, the concept of parallel combat is proposed and the model of parallel combat system is built based on OODA ring theory. Meanwhile, this paper builds a demand analysis model based on GQFD-coupling coordination degree to solve the low reliability, lack of objectivity, and single description perspective of the traditional quality function deployment (QFD) method and coupling coordination degree analysis during demand analysis. Additionally, the importance ranking of ability requirements in the parallel combat system is obtained by the house of quality of ability requirement analysis in the combat system based on …

Constructions Of Greatness In Foreign Policy: Neo-Ottomanism In Türki̇ye And Eurasianism In Russia, Jonathan Jordan, Salwa Azzahra
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional
Geopolitical changes in the second decade of the 21st century have shifted the centre of international political power. Non-Western political power centres emerged and increased influence as the unipolar world transformed into a multipolar one. In contrast to the Cold War era, where ideology was the main instrument in dealing with Western influence, some contemporary geopolitical power centres carry the perception of historical glory as an important factor in their foreign policy, as demonstrated by Turkey under the leadership of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan with its neo-Ottomanism and Russia under Vladimir Putin with Eurasianism. By using discourse analysis methods on data …

Language, Exogamy And Ethnicity In The Upper Rio Negro Region, Thiago Chacon, Luis Cayón
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
In this article we explore how languages interact with exogamous social units (e.g., clans and phratries) and descent ideologies (such as having a common mythical ancestor and emergence from the same mythical place) to help organize the multilingual and interethnic societies from the Upper Rio Negro region (URN) in the Amazon. We show that the expected alignment of language boundary, exogamous group and descent group is actually quite unusual. Complex social structures involving the aggregation of clans into larger ethnic groups or marriage alliances with other clans have important variations in the alignment of language, exogamy, and descent ideology. Existing …

The Social Determinants Of Health And Genocide: Towards A Public Health Integrated Framework Of Genocide And Mass Violence, Sian Persad, Cheng Xu
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
This paper makes a normative argument about transformations of public health as a necessary condition required in any transitional justice process. We seek to bridge the gap between the fields of genocide and public health to understand the recursive relationship between genocide and the social determinants of health. We show that structures and institutions established during genocide create enduring impacts on the public health outcomes of victim and survivor groups even after the ousting of the original perpetrators. Our comparative analysis of the Rwandan Genocide and the colonial genocide of Indigenous communities in Canada surveys the available public health literature …
Vaupés Multilingualism And The Substance Of Language, Stephen Hugh-Jones
Vaupés Multilingualism And The Substance Of Language, Stephen Hugh-Jones
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
By focusing on ordinary conversational language, relying on a notion of “group” derived from unilineal descent theory, and neglecting mythology and ritual, studies of Vaupés Tukanoan multilingualism have inadvertently tended to reproduce a Western ideology of language as marking national identity and concerned with conveying meaning. This paper suggests that attention to musical, ritual, and shamanic contexts reveals multilingualism in a different light, with ritual speech acts as constitutive of social groups, names as vehicles of reproduction, and breath as a substance-like bodily element and source of vitality. The more esoteric, rhetorical, musical, or visual ornamentation is given to breath, …
Clever Animals: Naturalcultural Interactions In Karitiana Hunting Practices (Rondônia, Brazil), Felipe Vander Velden
Clever Animals: Naturalcultural Interactions In Karitiana Hunting Practices (Rondônia, Brazil), Felipe Vander Velden
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
This article addresses hunting practices and human-animal relations among the Karitiana, a Tupi-Arikém-speaking indigenous people in the southwestern Brazilian Amazon, asserting that if humans can learn from animals in long-lasting hunting experiences in the forest, animals can also learn how to deal with their human predators as well as their knowledge and techniques. Furthermore, animals must be understood here as species and individuals. This is an almost natural conclusion drawn from Amazonian ethnography, which suggests that distinctions between humans and the nonhumans that we call animals are not classified according to a categorization in which human beings have resourcefulness and …
When “Close Enough” Is Not Enough: Accommodating The Religiously Devout, Dallan F. Flake
When “Close Enough” Is Not Enough: Accommodating The Religiously Devout, Dallan F. Flake
BYU Law Review
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 requires employers to “reasonably accommodate” employees’ religious practices that conflict with work requirements unless doing so would cause undue hardship to their business operations. Can an accommodation be reasonable if it only partially removes the conflict between an employee’s job and their religious beliefs? For instance, if a Christian employee requests Sundays off because he believes working on his Sabbath is a sin, and his employer responds by giving him Sunday mornings off to attend church services but requires him to work in the afternoon, has the employer provided a reasonable …

China Maritime Report No. 33: China's Sea-Based Nuclear Deterrent: Organizational, Operational, And Strategic Implications, David C. Logan
CMSI China Maritime Reports
China’s development of a credible sea-based deterrent has important implications for the PLAN, for China’s nuclear strategy, and for U.S.-China strategic stability. For the PLAN, the need to protect the SSBN force may divert resources away from other missions; it may also provide justification for further expansion of the PLAN fleet size. For China’s nuclear strategy and operations, the SSBN force may increase operational and bureaucratic pressures for adopting a more forward-leaning nuclear strategy. For U.S.-China strategic stability, the SSBN force will have complex effects, decreasing risks that Chinese decisionmakers confront use-or-lose escalation pressures, making China less susceptible to U.S. …
The Decision To Invade: An Internal Perspective To The Russian Invasion Of Ukraine, Muhammad Damar Shafy Ramadhan
The Decision To Invade: An Internal Perspective To The Russian Invasion Of Ukraine, Muhammad Damar Shafy Ramadhan
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional
The invasion of Ukraine by Russia marked a new turning point in the history of the 21st century and has had far-reaching effects for much of the globalized world. The intensity of such an unexpected and unprovoked war has made it crucial to seek out the reasons why Russia decided to wage war on Ukraine. As such, there is a need to look for a deeper origin of the conflict, especially the unique circumstances that led to such policy being pursued. A comprehensive and theoretical approach that connects all the dots into one chronological picture is required. To that …

The Chicago Fire Of 1871: Recovery And Reinforcement Of Class Divisions, Thomas Fay '24
Senior Scholarly and Creative Symposium
The Chicago Fire of 1871 demonstrated the resiliency of one of the United States' largest city. Labeled as one of the most devastating disasters to strike an urban area in American history, the aftermath and recovery efforts proved to be critical in keeping Chicago on the map as an economic hub. Often left out of the documented history on the fire is how class divisions were shaped and reinforced through the redevelopment of neighborhoods and distribution of relief in the resurrection period. This project was aimed to root out how class divisions and wealth gaps were reinforced in Chicago considering …

Fortifications In The Book Of Mormon And In Mesoamerica
Fortifications In The Book Of Mormon And In Mesoamerica
Insights: The Newsletter of the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship
Archaeologists have consistently denied that ancient Mesoamerican peoples systematically practiced warfare. The Book of Mormon, however, reports a great deal of warfare and fortifications. Only in the last 15 years has a small set of experts begun to see warfare playing an important role in this area, although of course it has been common everywhere else in the world.
