Analytical And Machine Learning Modeling Of Direct Carbonation Of Natural Silicate Minerals, William Hanson Jan 2024

Analytical And Machine Learning Modeling Of Direct Carbonation Of Natural Silicate Minerals, William Hanson

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The climate-altering effects of atmospheric CO2 make it necessary to develop innovative technologies that can remove it from the atmosphere. Mineral carbonation is a scalable technology to sequestrate and store CO2 in a stable carbonate mineral form. The efficiency of the mineral carbonation process depends on both feed mineralogy and process parameters. Comprehensive modeling and prediction of mineral carbonation efficiency for different CO2 – reactive rocks has not been achieved in the past. In this thesis work, analytical and machine learning models are developed to predict the carbonation efficiency of dunite reactions. It is found that random forest …

Characterization Of Plant Produced Vhh Antibodies Against Cobra Venom Toxins For Antivenom Therapy, Sarocha Vitayathikornnasak Jan 2024

Characterization Of Plant Produced Vhh Antibodies Against Cobra Venom Toxins For Antivenom Therapy, Sarocha Vitayathikornnasak

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Cobra (Naja kaouthia) venom contains many toxins including α-neurotoxin (α-NTX) and phospholipase A2 (PLA2), which can cause neurodegeneration, respiratory failure, and even death. The conventional antivenom produced by animal immunization faces many challenges and limitations. Heavy-chain-only antibodies (HCAb), fusing VHH with human IgG Fc region, offer advantages in tissue penetration, antigen binding, and extended half-life. This research involved the construction and transient expression of two types of VHH-FC which are specific to α-Neurotoxin (VHH-αNTX-FC) and Phospholipase A2 (VHH-PLA2-FC) in Nicotiana benthamiana leaves. The recombinant HCAbs were incubated for up to six days to optimize expression levels followed by purification by …

Financial Exclusion In The Uk's Cashless Society Initiative: Challenges And Policy Considerations, Ogochukwu Monye

International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice

This study explores the challenges posed by the United Kingdom's (UK) cashless society initiative, which has sparked a surge in digital financial services (DFS), including contactless payment and online banking. While the policy promises benefits such as convenience, security, and faster transactions, there is a concern that many, particularly financially underserved and excluded consumers, will face isolation from the cashless transition. Data from the Bank of England (BoE) reveals that approximately 1.2 million UK adults lack access to traditional bank accounts, compelling them to rely primarily on cash transactions. Using the doctrinal research method, this study examines the compelling issue …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This thesis examines how Form School Feng Shui principles can guide residential design for Chinese migrant workers in Chonburi, Thailand. The study addresses the problem of cultural and environmental incongruence in local townhouse layouts, particularly in the arrangement of Yin and Yang spaces and natural ventilation, which are essential to creating a balanced living environment in Feng Shui. The work is significant as it adapts Feng Shui architecture—a system deeply rooted in Chinese philosophy—to a modern context, fostering cultural familiarity and comfort for migrants. Using a comparative analysis of traditional Chaoshan courtyard houses and townhouses in Chonburi, the research evaluates …

Cultural District: Nexus Of Cultures: How Can Architecture Be Utilized To Reshape Narratives Of Nationalism And Foster A Sense Of Global Unity Within A Responsive Sustainable Cultural District In Aden, Yemen?, Amin Abdi

Architecture Theses

The world today is increasingly divided along nationalistic lines, with people often forgetting their shared humanity in favor of their national identities. It is disheartening to observe the rise of divisive nationalism, fostering an "us versus them" mentality. This categorization of individual based on nationality often leads to conflicts and undermines the shared humanity that should bind us together. The need to rekindle a sense of global unity becomes apparent, and architecture can serve as a powerful tool in reshaping these narratives, which can also serve as a potent tool for expressing and reinforcing nationalistic sentiments. This research aims to …

Healing Through Humanitarian Design: Understanding The Refugee Crisis And Designing For The Future, Matthew Peikert

Architecture Theses

This project is an exploration into understanding the qualities of the built environment to attain a level of dignity for refugees in their healing process. Architecture cannot solve these social issues but seeks to understand the impact of the built environment on individual people. This research will focus on the humanitarian design response method and how it can be improved in the future. Can healing take place through design created by architects and does the design of a refugee camp have anything to do with that healing process? This research will use the global refugee situation as a vehicle to …

Fred R. Gowans is the proverbial American original – or, better yet, Western American original. Fred talked and wrote convincingly about the American West and the fur trade because he spent so much time in it, exploring or retracing old trails. Fred made no pretenses. He dressed for class, public talks, or academic presentations the same way he dressed for working with his horses: Western hat, Western shirt, Levis, cowboy boots, and on the rare occasion a sport coat and bolo tie. He lived with his wife Gloria in a log home that he and his father Floyd had built …

Do Audit Partners Exhibit Hometown Bias?, Yuzhou Chen, Timothy Seidel, Aleksandra "Ally" B. Zimmerman

Faculty Publications

We investigate whether audit partners exhibit greater leniency towards audit clients located in their childhood or pre-professional home state. While prior research has examined the audit quality effects of geographic distance between an auditor and client as well as auditors’ social ties to company management or directors, this study uniquely examines auditors’ psychological affinity to places rather than people. Using hand-collected data on audit partners, company managers, and directors, we find evidence of partners exhibiting hometown bias in the form of greater leniency towards clients’ opportunistic reporting. However, we find no evidence to suggest that these psychological biases affect audit …

Colorectal Cancer Education: Utilization Of An Inflatable Colon And Small Media At A Health Fair In Central North Dakota, Faune Himmelspach

Nursing

Colorectal cancer is a prevalent and deadly disease, claiming thousands of lives each year.
