Foundational Moments In Geographers’ Lives: Tales From The Field, Casey D. Allen Jun 2024

Foundational Moments In Geographers’ Lives: Tales From The Field, Casey D. Allen

The Geographical Bulletin

Talking with colleagues and students, one of two responses (sometimes both) usually crop-up when answering the question, “Why did you choose geography”? One is the discipline’s broadness: geography encompasses both social and natural sciences as well as the humanities.

A Narrow Escape From The Tajik Pamir, Stephen F. Cunha Jun 2024

A Narrow Escape From The Tajik Pamir, Stephen F. Cunha

The Geographical Bulletin

This essay documents surviving attempted murder and gunshot wounds incurred during 1992 geographical f ieldwork in the Pamir Mountains of Tajikistan. Our project goal was to assess the potential for a Pamir National Park in this Central Asian terra incognita where the southernmost Soviet Union met the unruly frontier with Afghanistan and China. Our personnel included geographers and government officials from the Soviet Academy of Sciences, Tajik Academy of Sciences, Goscomproda (Tajik Ministry of Environment), and the NGO Tajik Socio-Ecological Union. The initial 1991 field season involved living in Moscow through the coup attempt that ultimately disbanded the Soviet Union. …

Debunking Muslim Stereotypes: Learning Religious Tolerance And Acceptance Through Geographic Fieldwork, Elizabeth Nelson Jun 2024

Debunking Muslim Stereotypes: Learning Religious Tolerance And Acceptance Through Geographic Fieldwork, Elizabeth Nelson

The Geographical Bulletin

According to the SAGE Handbook of Fieldwork, “fieldwork” refers to primary research that occurs “in the field,” the “field” being a setting that is outside the controlled settings of the library or laboratory (McCall 2006, 2). As a human geographer, my fieldwork involves participant-observation within the ethnographic tradition that requires the insertion of me (the researcher) into the subject matter of my work – the lives and experiences of Algerian immigrants and their descendants living in Paris, France. As a Western scholar doing research on a postcolonial population embedded within their former colonizer’s social systems, it is important for me …

Curiosity, Passion, & Proximity: Motivations For Attending Safe Zone Trainings, D Chase J. Catalano, Daniel Tillapaugh, Rachel Wagner, Kari Dockendorff, Nina Tissi-Gassoway Jun 2024

Curiosity, Passion, & Proximity: Motivations For Attending Safe Zone Trainings, D Chase J. Catalano, Daniel Tillapaugh, Rachel Wagner, Kari Dockendorff, Nina Tissi-Gassoway

Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education

LGBTQ+ social justice educational interventions (SJEIs), usually named Safe Zone or Ally Training, offer opportunities for knowledge acquisition and reflection. Ideally, they provide components necessary to cultivate allyship through the development of a liberatory consciousness (Love, 2018) through increasing awareness, engaging in analysis, considering actions, and reflecting on accountability. In this instrumental case study (Stake, 2000) focused on 17 graduate students, faculty, and staff at a large, public university in the Mid-Atlantic, we used liberatory consciousness as a conceptual framework to examine motivation for attendance. Three findings emerged: (1) curiosity, (2) passion, and (3) proximity. Implications of these specific factors …

Investigation And Comprehensive Utilization Of Resources In Closed Coal Mines In Anhui Province, China, Liu Feiyue, Chen Wanyun, Yang Ke, Duan Minke, Liu Qinjie, Yang Lingyue Jun 2024

Investigation And Comprehensive Utilization Of Resources In Closed Coal Mines In Anhui Province, China, Liu Feiyue, Chen Wanyun, Yang Ke, Duan Minke, Liu Qinjie, Yang Lingyue

Coal Geology & Exploration

[Objevtive] With the continuously intensive exploitation of coal resources and the structural reform of energy supply, many coal mines in Anhui Province have been closed due to resource depletion or backward production capacity. However, the closed coal mines still host resources such as underground spaces, residual coals, gas, mine water, land, and infrastructure equipment. Hence, reutilizing resources in closed coal mines holds significant engineering value and economic benefits. [Methods] Based on the general information and reutilization status of 59 coal mines in Anhui Province that have been closed since 2013, this study analyzed the distribution characteristics, residual resources, and reutilization …

Microplastic records from lake cores can reconstruct the plastic pollution history. However, the associations between anthropogenic activities and microplastic accumulation are not well understood. Huguangyan Maar Lake (HML) is a deep-enclosed lake without inlets and outlets, where the sedimentary environment is ideal for preserving a stable and historical microplastic record. Microplastic (size: 10-500 μm) characteristics in the HML core were identified using the Laser Direct Infrared Imaging system. The earliest detectable microplastics appeared unit in 1955 (1.1 items g-1). The microplastic abundance ranged from n.d. to 615.2 items g-1 in 1955-2019 with an average of 134.9 items …

Underrepresented populations are often excluded from genomic studies owing in part to a lack of resources supporting their analyses. The 1000 Genomes Project (1kGP) and Human Genome Diversity Project (HGDP), which have recently been sequenced to high coverage, are valuable genomic resources because of the global diversity they capture and their open data sharing policies. Here, we harmonized a high-quality set of 4094 whole genomes from 80 populations in the HGDP and 1kGP with data from the Genome Aggregation Database (gnomAD) and identified over 153 million high-quality SNVs, indels, and SVs. We performed a detailed ancestry analysis of this cohort, …

Position, Navigation, And Timing Weaponization In The Maritime Domain: Orientation In The Era Of Great Systems Conflict, Diane M. Zorri, Gary C. Kessler

Joint Force Quarterly

The jamming and spoofing of Global Positioning System (GPS) and the Automatic Identification System (AIS) information has escalated in the last half-dozen years from simple demonstrations of capability to truly dangerous situations where misperceptions could ignite a major conflict. Because of the grave danger that GPS and AIS weaponization entails, it is essential that policymakers and maritime operators understand not only the risks and implications of these threats, but also the mitigation techniques and countermeasures that add resilience to the warfighter.

A Second Look: Local Labor Markets And The Impact Of Ban The Box Policies After Criminal Legal Involvement, Benjamin David Pyle Jun 2024

A Second Look: Local Labor Markets And The Impact Of Ban The Box Policies After Criminal Legal Involvement, Benjamin David Pyle

Faculty Scholarship

This paper estimates the impact of labor demand on the employment and recidivism outcomes of released prisoners. Higher labor demand at release generates higher earnings and lower recidivism. Reduced recidivism persists after controlling for the observed labor market outcomes of the returning cohort, suggesting that labor demand impacts crime through channels beyond the direct formal employment of returning prisoners. Difference-in-differences based evidence suggests Ban the Box (BTB) policies delaying when employers can ask about criminal records improve labor market outcomes and lower recidivism for misdemeanor defendants. Evidence for felony defendants and returning prisoners is mixed but suggestive of similar patterns.

DRS Biennial Conference Series

The Bauhaus of the Seas (BoS) is one of the Lighthouse projects of the New European Bauhaus initiative (NEB). The project promotes the application of the NEB values – sustainable, beautiful, together – to develop locally grounded De-monstrator Pilots and focus cities’ attention on the future of the oceans. A co-design approach is being applied in a series of participatory sessions with stake-holders, including nature/ecosystem experts, cultural institutions, local authori-ties and civic organizations, aiming at a consolidated collaborative approach. In this report we present the results from the co-design processes under develop-ment in Oeiras and Lisbon – two coastal territories …

Head And Heart — An Ethical Tightrope, Anjuli Muller, Anna Brown

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Navigating ethical considerations in participatory design is complex and ever-changing. The Co-production Project explores the use of co-production methods (co-discover, co-plan, co-design, co-deliver, co-evaluate) via a case study of women’s health in Aotearoa New Zealand. Based in an Arts and Design University, ‘academic ethics’ influence the project in tangible ways that are often procedural and prescriptive, with a focus on productivity. However, co-production methods — underpinned by principles of power-sharing and prioritisation of relationships — call for softer and less tangible considerations aligned with an ethics of care. These tangible and intangible ethical considerations are frequently in tension with each …

Proximity-Based Urban Planning Models As The Inter-Face Between Governments And Makers, Designers, And Citizens Towards Distributed Economies, Massimo Menichinelli, Luca D'Elia, Silvia D'Ambrosio, Carla Sedini Jun 2024

Proximity-Based Urban Planning Models As The Inter-Face Between Governments And Makers, Designers, And Citizens Towards Distributed Economies, Massimo Menichinelli, Luca D'Elia, Silvia D'Ambrosio, Carla Sedini

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Standard urban planning models are nowadays being redefined with a renewed focus on reducing mobility times: proximity, walkability, self-sufficiency. Recon-figuring how cities, their flows, and services are organized also requires designers and citizens, with a potential role for the Maker Movement and Distributed Economies. We focus here on how urban creative communities and maker labor-atories could become public empowerment services by, for and with citizens within proximity of urban planning models. We propose a framework for such Proximity-based Making and Community Services based on 1) defining them as connecting makers, designers, citizens, and maker laboratories, 2) via digital technologies network …

Repositioning Design As The New Attractor In Sustainability, Clee Zhuo Wang, Yiying Wu, Laurent Gutierrez Jun 2024

Repositioning Design As The New Attractor In Sustainability, Clee Zhuo Wang, Yiying Wu, Laurent Gutierrez

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Design’s increasing participation in sustainability raises questions on what sustainability it serves and how. Contextualized in a cartography of sustainability discourse and its four typologies, we establish that design’s efforts on sustainability to date are largely affiliated to the mainstream socio-technological pathway, a continuation of the modernization project deepening the crises. This affiliation, while granting design access to the increasingly active field of sustainability, risks reducing its versatile epistemology to amusing representation. Drawing from Human-Nature Relationships (HNR) research, we propose the utilization of the "sustainability space" as an analytical tool. The processual, embodied, and affective qualities inherent in design are …

Designing Through Ecological Soundscape To Foster Human-Nature Interaction, Francesca Valsecchi, Herun Chen, Qingyu Zhang

DRS Biennial Conference Series

Sense of hearing provides an effective, immersive and empathetic way to observe, map and explore places with a more-than-human approach. In our contemporary mediascape inundated by visual stimuli, the rediscovery of sound offers a different understanding of the world. By discussing two research-based sound design projects, this study discusses 1) the potential of using soundscape as an empathetic research tool in multispecies ethnography and 2) how soundscape as a communication media could stimulate more-than-human exploration and empathy. Such design outcomes develop an empathic and conscious understanding of human-nature interaction, even in an urban context. Intersecting science, research and creative practices, …
