Surf Tourism In Cold Water Destinations: Discovering Destinations Impacted By Changing Waterfront Usage Through Vgi Mapping, Tracy S. Michaud Sep 2024

Surf Tourism In Cold Water Destinations: Discovering Destinations Impacted By Changing Waterfront Usage Through Vgi Mapping, Tracy S. Michaud

ICHRIE Research Reports

Surf destinations have been ascribed to tropical locations in the past but are moving into more cold-water climates, such as the Maine coast. In order for sustainable policy to be created in places like this. understanding which beaches are impacted by increased surf tourism is the place to start. This was accomplished through an analysis of social media photos using Voluntary Geographic Information mapping techniques. Density maps were created using Flickr/SmugMug photos from Maine with surfing tags in five-year increments from 2004-2024. The analysis indicates an increased spread of surfing throughout the coast with a concentration in certain locations indicating …

Changes In Drug And Alcohol Behaviors Before And After An Educational Intervention Among At-Risk Adults And Youth, Isabel Cuellar Acker

All ETDs from UAB

Introduction: Substance abuse is defined as the excessive use of a drug in a way that is detrimental to oneself, society, or both. Gender is important to examine because it is becoming more common for females to develop substance use disorders and for their substance use to be more severe. This study will address the role of an education-based intervention on substance abuse in an area that is at the intersection of rural and urban geography with a unique pool of participants. Methods: This is a longitudinal cohort study that has a pre-post intervention design. A linear model was used …

Jefferson Hospital Staff Papers and Presentations

BACKGROUND: Reductions in opioid prescribing by health care providers can lead to a decreased risk of opioid dependence in patients. Peer comparison has been demonstrated to impact providers' prescribing habits, though its effect on opioid prescribing has predominantly been studied in the emergency department setting.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to describe the development of an enterprise-wide opioid scorecard, the architecture of its implementation, and plans for future research on its effects.

METHODS: Using data generated by the author's enterprise vendor-based electronic health record, the enterprise analytics software, and expertise from a dedicated group of informaticists, physicians, and …

Maritime Incidents In The South China Sea: Measures Of Law Enforcement Or Use Of Force?, Aurel Sari Sep 2024

Maritime Incidents In The South China Sea: Measures Of Law Enforcement Or Use Of Force?, Aurel Sari

International Law Studies

China has sought to extend its control over the South China Sea at the expense of neighboring countries. In pursuing its goals, Beijing adopts a “power and law” approach, claiming extensive territorial and maritime rights in contravention of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and asserting these rights through coercive action in disputed waters. A key element of China’s strategy involves the use of coast guard and maritime militia vessels in an effort to portray its operations as measures of law enforcement, rather than displays of coercive power.

This article argues that the Chinese narrative of law …

The Rise And Fall Of Internal Colonialism As A Theory Of Race In Black Political Movements And Academia, Eric Davis Sep 2024

The Rise And Fall Of Internal Colonialism As A Theory Of Race In Black Political Movements And Academia, Eric Davis

All ETDs from UAB

Throughout black/African history in the United States, various competitive ideas have emerged over time to take on the arduous task of theorizing race. From W.E.B. Du Bois’s famed assertion of the issue of race being one of racial discrimination--- summed up aptly as the“color line”--- to Malcolm X’s gradual recognition of the problem as one of Euro-American imperialism, to others, there has been no shortage of race theories. However, the ascension of contemporary theories of race has belied this diversity, obscuring the roles of other paradigms in shaping a mass consciousness of race, such as internal colonialism. This thesis applies …

Runaway Bride: Pieter Bruegel The Elder's "Dulle Griet" And The Netherlands' Hellish Union With Spain, K. Caralee Caudelle Sep 2024

Runaway Bride: Pieter Bruegel The Elder's "Dulle Griet" And The Netherlands' Hellish Union With Spain, K. Caralee Caudelle

All ETDs from UAB

Pieter Bruegel the Elder’s Dulle Griet (1563) is a painting about which there is ample scholarship, but its prevailing interpretations do not fully consider the interplay between the main character, an aged woman convincingly identified as a virago, and the unusual depictions of housewives behind her. Reassessing the painting within the context of religious and civic imagery of its time, I argue that the main character, hitherto known as “Dulle Griet” or “Mad Meg,” is a conflation of religious and patriotic symbols, loosely personifying Antverpia, the Maid of Antwerp, one of the precursors to imagery developed during the Dutch Revolt …

Barriers And Facilitators To Mental Health Care Among Suicide Attempt Survivors, Mercedes Tarasovich Sep 2024

Barriers And Facilitators To Mental Health Care Among Suicide Attempt Survivors, Mercedes Tarasovich

All ETDs from UAB

This mixed methods study examined factors associated with met and unmet mental health care needs among suicide attempt survivors in the U.S. Quantitative survey data from 74 participants was analyzed using fuzzy set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA) to determine configurations of conditions associated with met and unmet needs. Qualitative data from the surveys and 21 in-depth interviews were analyzed thematically. Key integrated findings show social and economic factors act in combination to affect outcomes of met and unmet mental health care needs, including the gray areas of “needs partially met.” Configurations of conditions which included lack of perceived suicide stigma, …

The Relationship Between Socioeconomic Status And Polygenic Risk Scores On Body Mass Index Among Non-Hispanic White Americans, Tomiwa Joshua Ayetigbo Sep 2024

The Relationship Between Socioeconomic Status And Polygenic Risk Scores On Body Mass Index Among Non-Hispanic White Americans, Tomiwa Joshua Ayetigbo

All ETDs from UAB

The prevalence of obesity in the United States remains high, especially among individuals of low socioeconomic status (SES). Studies examining the joint influence of genetics and social factors, such as early life SES and education, in association with obesity remain underreported. These social factors might be related to a heightened risk of obesity. Genetic factors may further exacerbate the high-weight predisposition of those at risk. Genetic and social factors may act together to shape individuals’ weight. Therefore, this research ex-amined (a) whether the association between polygenic risk for BMI (PGS-BMI) and Body Mass Index (BMI) is independently modified by early …

Training Needs And Costs In Kalamazoo's Core Neighborhoods, Timothy J. Bartik, Bridget Timmeney, Zachary Brown, Gerrit Anderson, Kathleen Bolter, Nicholas Martens, Brian Pittelko

Reports

This report estimates training needs in three Kalamazoo “core neighborhoods”: the Northside, Edison, and the Eastside. Using Census data, the analysis estimates the number of people potentially needing training in these neighborhoods as between 1,254 and 2,098 individuals. This report also estimates this training population’s characteristics, including: childcare needs, lack of a household vehicle, disability, felony records, substance abuse, mental illness. All these characteristics pose challenges for many hundreds in the training population. Based on a review of prior effective “sectoral training programs”, a training program may cost $7,300 per trainee, with over two-thirds of this cost due to various …

Applying The 5ps Of Cultural Ecosystem Services For Urban Agricultural And Natural Resources Programming, Mayra I. Rodriguez Gonzalez Sep 2024

Applying The 5ps Of Cultural Ecosystem Services For Urban Agricultural And Natural Resources Programming, Mayra I. Rodriguez Gonzalez

Journal of Extension

Beyond adapting extension programs for an urban audience, Urban Extension strives to reach an underserved audience that hugely overlaps with marginalized populations. This means that cultural competence is crucial for successful program implementation. The following article outlines the application of the 5P framework of Cultural Ecosystem Services as a tool for laying out the base to a culturally competent extension program. Although originally intended for urban planners, when applied widely for program development it allows accounting for place, past, people, practices, and purposes in a simple manner without overlooking importance context pertaining the target audience.
