E-Service Delivery And People-Centric Development In The Digital Age: A Case Of Rural South Africa, Tapfuma Pashapa, Ulrike Rivett Sep 2024

E-Service Delivery And People-Centric Development In The Digital Age: A Case Of Rural South Africa, Tapfuma Pashapa, Ulrike Rivett

African Conference on Information Systems and Technology

This paper explores the role of ICT proliferation in rural development, specifically in terms of improving public services within the South African rural context. The South African setting provided an opportunity to reflect on a people-centric approach that prioritizes social inclusion and public participation to balance a local government landscape historically skewed against rural areas. Interviews were conducted in rural municipalities to determine the development priorities of households and the impact of ICTs on rural development. The findings highlight that the economics of service delivery tend to favour service providers and those who are socio-economically advantaged. This results in varying …

Reconciling Modern Engineering Education With The Everyday Of Rural Schools And Youths, Malle R. Schilling, Jacob R. Grohs Sep 2024

Reconciling Modern Engineering Education With The Everyday Of Rural Schools And Youths, Malle R. Schilling, Jacob R. Grohs

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)

We highlight the impacts of inequitable distributions of resources across geographies, structural challenges faced in partnerships with rural schools, and the importance of asset-based arguments to recognize and engage with systemic challenges. Precollege engineering education often focuses on engaging students and teachers hands-on with novel technologies and experiences that frequently distract from systemic inequities, particularly pertaining to place. Given national efforts in rural STEM education, there is a need to recognize important contextual factors influencing precollege engineering education. Through a lens of working with rural Appalachian schools, we hope to challenge practices and assumptions in precollege engineering education.

Media Framing Of Transportation, Agriculture, And Gasoline In The Russia-Ukraine War, Sk Farhan Rabbi Sep 2024

Media Framing Of Transportation, Agriculture, And Gasoline In The Russia-Ukraine War, Sk Farhan Rabbi

Student Theses and Dissertations

The war between Russia and Ukraine has the potential to exacerbate social and economic effects on a worldwide scale, impacting several industries including energy, transportation, and agriculture crisis. Due to their heavy reliance on imports of key foods, the Middle East and North Africa are the most susceptible countries. The COVID-19 epidemic increased worldwide demand, and bad harvests all occurred at the same time as the conflict, further pressuring the food supply, transportation, and gasoline costs. Previous studies identified three categories: countries with diminishing fuel security, those making little advancements, and Latvia, which has undertaken noteworthy initiatives. Sanctions against Russia …

Race And The Manufacturing Workforce: Opportunities To Expand Growth And Equity In A Rebounding Industry Sector, Benjamin Armstrong, Matthew D. Wilson, Nichola J. Lowe Sep 2024

Race And The Manufacturing Workforce: Opportunities To Expand Growth And Equity In A Rebounding Industry Sector, Benjamin Armstrong, Matthew D. Wilson, Nichola J. Lowe

Upjohn Institute Policy Papers

This paper provides an overview of the manufacturing work experience of different racial groups. Our goal is to lend support to “middle-out” policy responses that seek to promote greater economic opportunity across the country through targeted sector growth, including manufacturing, while also bringing together people of all races in support of manufacturing regeneration. By pinpointing persistent inequities in U.S. manufacturing, we hope to embolden policy responses that ensure that as the manufacturing sector rebounds and continues to evolve, its high-paying, good-quality jobs are also more inclusive of workers of color.

On Explaining Why The (Human) World Is Rich, Bart J. Wilson Sep 2024

On Explaining Why The (Human) World Is Rich, Bart J. Wilson

ESI Working Papers

The wealth of the modern world is a natural historical marvel. Explaining it has traditionally been the purview of economic historians, as exemplified by the recent book How the World Became Rich by Mark Koyama and Jared Rubin. Economic historians, though, tend to only ask process-oriented “how” questions and “by what means” questions of the Great Enrichment. The eight co-authors of Explaining Technology, who are not economic historians, engage the debate asking a different question. Their goal is to explain the exponential shape of our enrichment with a model of the combinatorial evolution of technology. With an eye toward how …

The Nexus Of Resistance And Neoliberalism In Social Work And Social Welfare: A Scoping Review, Kevin Cherry, Sandra Leotti Sep 2024

The Nexus Of Resistance And Neoliberalism In Social Work And Social Welfare: A Scoping Review, Kevin Cherry, Sandra Leotti

School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study intervenes in a growing scholarly dialogue about neoliberalism in social work and social welfare by addressing the undertheorized concept of resistance. We conduct a scoping review of 54 articles published from 2008–2023 to answer two questions: how is resistance discussed in relation to neoliberalism, and what are the practice elements of resistance? Findings highlight resistance as a diverse phenomenon enacted in relation to context-specific manifestations of neoliberalism. A range of actors engage in resistance, including individual practitioners, social service organizations and collective action entities, among others. Resistance occurs across all scales of practice and takes many forms, from …

What Is Old Is New Again: The Reintegration Of Dresden’S Landscape Into The Modern German State, Richard Wolfel Sep 2024

What Is Old Is New Again: The Reintegration Of Dresden’S Landscape Into The Modern German State, Richard Wolfel

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper examines the architecture of Dresden in the era of East/West reunification. Traditional theories of German national development have identified three foci for post-World War II development, the Geopolitics of Nostalgia that seeks to return German national identity to an era prior to World War II, Zero Point thinking that seeks to build a new Germany from the ashes of World War II and critical preservation has sought to preserve some Nazi landscapes in an effort to facilitate discussion on the controversial era. Being an East German city, however, Dresden was isolated from the development of West German identity …

Assessing Climate Changein Alabama Using Climatenormals, Jonathan Herbert, Jeffrey A. D. Caudill Sep 2024

Assessing Climate Changein Alabama Using Climatenormals, Jonathan Herbert, Jeffrey A. D. Caudill

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper uses climate normals to assess historic changes in temperature and precipitation in Alabama. Changes in temperature and precipitation are calculated between climate normals periods at 18 weather stations across the state and for the state as a whole. The earliest climate normals period for which data are available is 1931-60 and the most recent is 1981-2010. Results show that Alabama has gotten cooler and wetter over the whole period of record, particularly in the fall and winter. However, changes between climate normals periods show these trends are reversing

Geographical Variation In The Photosynthesis Characteristics Of Sugar Maple (Acer Saccharum) Lab- And Field-Grown Seedlings, David Goldblum, Christa Kennett, Alicia Lisowski Sep 2024

Geographical Variation In The Photosynthesis Characteristics Of Sugar Maple (Acer Saccharum) Lab- And Field-Grown Seedlings, David Goldblum, Christa Kennett, Alicia Lisowski

The Geographical Bulletin

A number of recent studies suggest that in light of anthropogenic climate change, sugar maple (Acer saccharum) may not be adapted to persist over much of its current range. We consider variation in the species’ photosynthetic properties across its range. Seeds from Tennessee, Illinois, and Michigan were grown under laboratory conditions and in two experimental plots in Illinois and Michigan forests. In the Michigan forest, seedlings derived from Michigan seeds had significantly higher rates of carbon assimilation than those from Illinois. In the Illinois forest, seedlings from Tennessee had significantly greater carbon assimilation rates and light saturation points than seedlings …

Weather Influences On Raptor Migration Along The Kittatinny Ridge, Pennsylvania, Tara E. Gettig, Timothy W. Hawkins Sep 2024

Weather Influences On Raptor Migration Along The Kittatinny Ridge, Pennsylvania, Tara E. Gettig, Timothy W. Hawkins

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper analyzes the relationship between weather patterns and bird migration to determine the feasibility of a site-specific migration forecast. Autumn migration data from Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Pennsylvania for ten species were correlated with individual weather variables. Stepwise multiple linear regressions revealed a positive relationship with raptor migration to northwesterly winds and wind speed and an inverse relationship to sea level pressure. Composite maps were created using data from days with the greatest migration counts for each species and categorized by synoptic situations. A relationship between bird migration and cold-front passage was revealed, with five of the species having their …

Professional Development Considerations: Social Studies Standards Which Diverge From A Singular Cultural Script, Jacqueline D. Costales Sep 2024

Professional Development Considerations: Social Studies Standards Which Diverge From A Singular Cultural Script, Jacqueline D. Costales

Student Theses and Dissertations

With New Mexico’s release of new K-12 social studies standards, the problem considered in this qualitative case study was teacher perception regarding their needs for professional development (PD) that is adequate to prepare them to teach the new standards which diverge from a singular cultural script. The purpose of this study was to catalogue the needs that teachers identify as necessary to support their standards implementation. Analysis of data included cataloguing teacher perceptions based on three concepts from the literature: the use of critical pedagogy, culturally relevant teaching through a responsive approach, and teacher guidance of students toward being prepared …

Steeped: The Expansion Of Tea Culture From The Court Of The Tang To Its Emergence In Pop Culture (600 To 1400 Ce), Lisa Mae Floryshak

Student Theses and Dissertations

During the heyday of the Silk Road trade routes, rulers, religious pilgrims, and merchants alike eagerly described the goods they sought after and traded. They also gave insight into their life, be it related to administration, travel, time with a notable cleric, or engaging in employment as barter for lodging despite being on a quest of piety. These writings hold pages of descriptions about the people who interacted with those goods and services. They describe trading customs as a performance. They use silk, rice, sugar, fruit, and tea to gain entry and favor. These people learned customs and navigated with …

The United States Of Religiosity: The Influence Of Religious Identity On Public Policy Preference, Brandon Michael Johnson Sep 2024

The United States Of Religiosity: The Influence Of Religious Identity On Public Policy Preference, Brandon Michael Johnson

Student Theses and Dissertations

Religion has been linked to both voting behavior and political party preference, however, little research has been dedicated to religious identities influence on public policy preference nor the reasons behind policies supported. This study uses robust linear and ordinal regression and discovers a link between religious identity and non-religious policy but finds no significant connection between morally charged policies and religious identity. Furthermore, this study discovers religious components such as organizational structure and scriptural approach show to be more influential towards policy preference than religious belief.

A Flexible Approach To Reach An Equitable Solution: The Application Of Principles To The Delimitation Of The Continental Shelf, Ángeles Jiménez García-Carriazo Sep 2024

A Flexible Approach To Reach An Equitable Solution: The Application Of Principles To The Delimitation Of The Continental Shelf, Ángeles Jiménez García-Carriazo

International Law Studies

The delimitation of the continental shelf is an old exercise shaped by case law and State practice. Although every delimitation is unique, judicial practice has provided guidance about the principles to be applied in pursuit of an equitable solution. This article examines the guiding doctrines, the contemporary principles, and the emerging principles and rules in the delimitation of the continental shelf. It first analyzes the role of principles in continental shelf delimitation within two hundred nautical miles. Subsequently, it examines whether the same principles apply to the delimitation of the extended continental shelf, considering that the entitlement within two hundred …

Life In The Margins: The Effect Of Immersion/Emersion And Tidal Cycle On The North Atlantic Limpet Patella Vulgata Protein Synthesis Rates, Ignacio Alvarez-Cienfuegos, Benjamin Ciotti, Richard Billington, Paul Sutton, Keiron Fraser Sep 2024

Life In The Margins: The Effect Of Immersion/Emersion And Tidal Cycle On The North Atlantic Limpet Patella Vulgata Protein Synthesis Rates, Ignacio Alvarez-Cienfuegos, Benjamin Ciotti, Richard Billington, Paul Sutton, Keiron Fraser

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Biological processes in intertidal species follow tidal rhythms that enhance survival and fitness. Whereas tidal effects on behaviour and metabolic rates have been widely studied, impacts on other key process such as protein synthesis are still poorly understood. To date, no studies have examined the effect of immersion/emersion and tidal cycles on protein synthesis rates (k s). Patella vulgata is an intertidal limpet present in North-Eastern Atlantic rocky shores from high to low shore. Previously reported P. vulgata respiration and heart rate measurements suggest aerobic metabolism is maintained during emersion and growth rates increase from high to low shore, …

No. 02: Impacts Of Covid-19 Policy Measures On Migration And Food Security In Ecuador, Mercedes Eguiguren, Cheryl Martens

Migration and Food Security (MiFOOD) Network

The COVID-19 pandemic had profound effects on Ecuador, exacerbated by pre-existing weaknesses in the public health system, economic austerity policies, and social inequalities. The reliance on containment measures, combined with insufficient social support, resulted in severe economic and social decline. Migrants, already a vulnerable group, were further marginalized during the pandemic, facing exclusion from social protection programs and increased food insecurity. This report examines the impacts of COVID-19 policy measures on migration and food security in Ecuador, focusing on urban contexts, particularly the capital city of Quito. The findings underscore the need for more integrated research and policy approaches that …

Climate Hazards And Human Migration: Literature Review, Anna Ivanova, Deepti Singh, Pronoy Rai, Claire Richards, Hugo Vasconcelos, Michael Goldsby

International & Global Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

Human populations are migrating as a result of climate change. We conducted a systematic literature review examining the relationship between several climate hazards and migration flows. We reviewed 58 empirical studies between 2010 and 2023 that examined current and future migration related to acute and long-term climate hazards. The results indicate that the relationship between climate hazards and migration is diverse and depends on a range of socio-economic factors. Droughts and rising temperatures have a major impact on both international and domestic migration. Our review also reveals that multiple climate hazards collectively tend to intensify domestic migration toward urban areas, …

Integrated Merec-Cocoso Approach Using Score Function Ofneutrosophic For Location Selection Of Special Economic Zone, Debashis Ghosh, Bahnishikha Roy Muhuri, G. S. Mahapatra, B. S. Mahapatra

Neutrosophic Sets and Systems

Special economic zones (SEZs) are essential if a developing country is to boost economic growth. The selection of an SEZ site might be viewed as a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) difficulty because of the many conflicting aspects connected to different locations. This work presents a flexible neutrosophic MCDM approach for optimal SEZ site search. The single-valued neutrosophic sets transform the qualitative evaluation of the criteria for SEZ alternatives into a quantitative evaluation. The method based on removal effect on criteria (MEREC) approach is improved in a neutrosophic environment to ascertain the relevance of every characteristic of SEZ alternatives. We suggested a …

Unesco, Mining Heritage And The Scalar Sustainability Of Tourism Geographies At Industrial World Heritage Sites, Mark A. Rhodes, Kathryn L. Hannum Sep 2024

Unesco, Mining Heritage And The Scalar Sustainability Of Tourism Geographies At Industrial World Heritage Sites, Mark A. Rhodes, Kathryn L. Hannum

Michigan Tech Publications

Purpose: Industrial heritage works within a world of contradictions, contentions and scalar liminality. Archaeologists and historians focus upon oral histories and discourses of tangible and intangible memory and heritage while planners and economists see industrial World Heritage, in particular, as a marketing ploy to redevelop deindustrialized spaces. Within this liminality, we explore the potential for geographical perspectives to solder such contradictions into transdisciplinary heritage assessments and tourism contexts. How might the spatial tools of landscape and scalar analyses expose alternative and sustainable futures within broader patterns of industrial heritage management and consumption?

Design/methodology/approach: Using three comparative cases, interview and landscape …

Surf destinations have been ascribed to tropical locations in the past but are moving into more cold-water climates, such as the Maine coast. In order for sustainable policy to be created in places like this. understanding which beaches are impacted by increased surf tourism is the place to start. This was accomplished through an analysis of social media photos using Voluntary Geographic Information mapping techniques. Density maps were created using Flickr/SmugMug photos from Maine with surfing tags in five-year increments from 2004-2024. The analysis indicates an increased spread of surfing throughout the coast with a concentration in certain locations indicating …
