No Need Of Styles: Building Up Architectural Historiography, Carmen Popescu Dec 2024

No Need Of Styles: Building Up Architectural Historiography, Carmen Popescu

Artl@s Bulletin

If styles lost impetus within the methodology of art historiography, in the (parallel) field of architecture, they were firmly rejected one century ago. One might consider that this more radical positioning (particularly in terms of epistemological tools) constituted the very reason for the undeclared but yet consumed divorce between the two disciplines. Attempting to define its specificity but also the autonomy of the discipline, architectural historiography followed a path less directly preoccupied with aesthetics and closer to functionality and technicity. My paper analyses how architectural historiography built up its idiosyncrasy.

Si les styles en tant que catégorie ont perdu de …

Manufacturing National Boundaries? The Notion Of Style Between Identity Constructions And Spatial Approaches, Michela Passini Dec 2024

Manufacturing National Boundaries? The Notion Of Style Between Identity Constructions And Spatial Approaches, Michela Passini

Artl@s Bulletin

Art historians have long been preoccupied by art’s geographical inscription. But it was during the interwar period that research on the geography of art really took off and was recognized as a field of study in its own right. This is evidenced by the organization of an international congress of art history (Stockholm, September 1933) specifically devoted to art geography.

What was the field covered in 1933 by artistic geography? How did it define its objects? And how an art history marked at the time by an extremely present methodological nationalism did shape geographical approaches?

Depuis les débuts de la …

Power To The User: The Future Of Immersive Storytelling Might Lie In Understanding The Audience, Hannah Greber Dec 2024

Power To The User: The Future Of Immersive Storytelling Might Lie In Understanding The Audience, Hannah Greber

Newhouse Impact Journal

Immersive storytelling in journalism has faced disillusionment due to low audience adoption despite initial high expectations. Drawing from media innovation theories, this essay argues that to progress to wide audience adoption, immersive storytelling should align with audience expectations, clearly demonstrate its added value, and create experiences deemed meaningful by the audience. Adopting a connection-strengthening audience focus is proposed to aid in bridging the gap between journalists’ intentions and audience perceptions. Two studies are presented to illustrate the added value of taking on such a connection-strengthening audience perspective. Future research should focus on collaborative efforts between academia and industry to design …

Public Librarianship & Food Justice: Exploring The Intersections, Christine D'Arpa, Noah Lenstra, Elizabeth Thornburg, Chloe Williams

School of Information Sciences Faculty Research Publications

This report explores and examines some of the intersections between public librarianship and food justice. Food justice is a topic many working in public libraries wish to understand and put into action. Many struggle to do so in a way that is sustainable for the institution of the public library. These findings emerged from focus groups with public library workers conducted from November 2023 to March 2024. This report introduces five themes based on focus group conversations. Three themes describe how public library workers think about the intersections of food justice and public librarianship (1-3). Two describe how library workers …

The availability of natural resources drives the exploration and transformation of remote regions in the Arctic and beyond. Extractive infrastructure is one of the major sources of industrial development and environmental impact on landscapes. For Indigenous people, these landscapes are homely environments full of sentient beings, and for other local communities, they provide a wide variety of subsistence and hunting resources. While extractive infrastructure violence is the evident issue for many Indigenous communities, there are more complicated situations where extractive infrastructure is adopted and utilized for the subsistence and support of other human and more-than-human relations in local and Indigenous …

Breaking The Yoke: A Systematic Unmasking Of Challenges To Sustainable Rural Development In South Sudan, Gai Chol Paul Dec 2024

Breaking The Yoke: A Systematic Unmasking Of Challenges To Sustainable Rural Development In South Sudan, Gai Chol Paul

Journal of Sustainable Social Impact

South Sudan, a young nation grappling with the legacy of protracted conflict, faces significant challenges in fostering sustainable rural development. While the immense potential of its vast agricultural lands remains largely untapped, the persistent triple threat of insecurity, deficient infrastructure, and the absence of robust government policy actively hinders progress. The ongoing armed conflict, characterized by inter-communal violence and sporadic attacks, casts a long shadow over rural areas in South Sudan. Thus, I developed this mixed-method multiple-case study, grounded in the sustainable livelihoods framework, to explore challenges that hinder sustainable rural development in South Sudan. I collected data through document …

Particle Size And Settling Velocity Of Bed And Suspended Sediments For Mud-Sand Beds, Leo Van Rijn, Luitze Perk, Bas Van Maren, Andy Manning Dec 2024

Particle Size And Settling Velocity Of Bed And Suspended Sediments For Mud-Sand Beds, Leo Van Rijn, Luitze Perk, Bas Van Maren, Andy Manning

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

The particle size and the settling velocity of sediments are key parameters in sediment transport studies. However, it remains surprisingly difficult to determine particle size and settling velocity distribution of fine-grained sediments (mud-sand). A large range of methodologies exist to measure either the particle size distribution or to measure the settling velocity. An important influential parameter is the shape of fine-grained sediments, with clay minerals being shaped as plates rather than as spheres. Furthermore, the settling velocity of fine particles is influenced by turbulent shear and flocculation processes. Sometimes, the sediment samples are pre-treated (destroying inter-particle bonds) to measure the …

Using The Lehmer Mean To Assess Business Data Protection: Statistical Disclosure Control And The Truncated Moment Problem, Mark Stander, Julian Stander Dec 2024

Using The Lehmer Mean To Assess Business Data Protection: Statistical Disclosure Control And The Truncated Moment Problem, Mark Stander, Julian Stander

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Confidential business data needs protection against disclosure. Often this data is protected by releasing sample means, variances and higher power moments. Motivated by statistical disclosure control obligations and the need to publish business data safely, we explain how calculating the Lehmer mean from released power moments can lead to the unwanted disclosure of the largest data value. We explain how similar disclosure can apply to smaller data values and provide an approximate solution to the Truncated Moment Problem. We briefly discuss the Gini mean and the relationship between sample central and raw moments.

Loss Of Trace Elements From Agricultural Soil, S. D.W. Comber, R. J. Schindler, M. S.A. Blackwell, T. Darch

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Soil erosion is a world-wide issue driven by land management and climate change. Research has focussed on soil loss rates from agricultural land. However, the loss of trace elements essential for soil and plant health, or potentially toxic elements that occur as impurities in fertilisers and manures, is poorly understood. This study reports on the loads and forms of copper, cadmium, manganese, nickel, selenium and zinc lost from three types of agricultural systems at Rothamsted Research’s North Wyke Farm Platform over five individual storm events. Loads reflected a combination of concentrations in the soil, annual additions from fertilisers, the ability …

Sustainable Carbon Footprint Growth Mechanism In Forest Systems Under Patterns Ofglobal Climate Change, Wenbo Zhang, Guangxu Liu

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Forests play a crucial role in regulating the global carbon cycle, but there are few existing studies on measuring the carbonfootprint of forest systems and analyzing the driving factors for sustained growth. This study investigated the carbon footprint of forestsystems, examined the driving factors behind their sustained growth under patterns of global climate change, and developed a researchmethodology to understand this sustained growth mechanism. To determine the carbon footprint and carbon-carrying capacity offorest systems, this study began with the impact of cities on forest systems and constructed a carbon footprint account for forest systems.Based on a relative growth model and …

Predictors Of Mortality In African Americans With Alzheimer’S Disease-Related Dementias, Latrice Camille Noonan Dec 2024

Predictors Of Mortality In African Americans With Alzheimer’S Disease-Related Dementias, Latrice Camille Noonan

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Alzheimer’s disease-related dementia (ADRD) is a leading cause of death worldwide. There is a need to identify the link between modifiable risk factors and the association with ADRD mortality. This study addresses the disproportionately high burden of ADRD among African Americans, aiming to inform targeted prevention strategies and promote health equity. In this study, the longitudinal relationship between ADRD mortality and the presences of diabetes, smoking, and obesity among older African Americans residing in the United States was examined, while controlling for age, gender, education, and socioeconomic status. The biopsychosocial model served as the theoretical framework for this study. The …

Long-Term Effects Of Group Rights To Fisheries: Evaluating The Western Alaska Community Development Quota Program, Matthew Berman Dec 2024

Long-Term Effects Of Group Rights To Fisheries: Evaluating The Western Alaska Community Development Quota Program, Matthew Berman

ISER Articles

Restricting access to fisheries and other common property resources through creation of individual transferable rights has been documented to create wealth and promote conservation, but has also reduced employment and increased inequality in fishing communities. Creating group rights instead of individual rights has been suggested as an alternative strategy that could realize the benefits with diminished social cost; however, little independent evaluation of actual implementations of group rights to fisheries has occurred. The Western Alaska Community Development Quota (CDQ) program represents an example of allocation of group fishery rights to six not-for-profit organizations representing 65 small, largely Indigenous coastal communities. …

Interreligious dialogue is crucial for cultural, economic, and social progress, fostering cultural development through activities like tourism. To address misunderstandings and biases, continuous development and promotion of interreligious dialogue is essential. This two-way process emphasises the importance of ‘listening and telling’, while respecting differences. Religious tourism serves as a valuable tool for encounters and understanding among diverse communities. This paper tries to address the question of whether there are for interreligious dialogue in tourism that have yet to be applied and could be implemented? The findings from tourism theory indicate that religious encounters primarily take place in sacred places, sacred …

The participants included six physician leaders affiliated or employed with a leadership role in a healthcare organization in the United States. Data …

Relocating Location Incentives, Brian Highsmith Dec 2024

Relocating Location Incentives, Brian Highsmith

Duke Law Journal

In recent years, a growing share of state and local budgetary resources has been diverted to a small number of firms through multibillion-dollar location incentive megadeals, as represented by Amazon’s HQ2 search and Wisconsin’s Foxconn boondoggle. These companies have become adept at devising new mechanisms for extracting the public resources of local communities to secure a competition advantage over their market rivals. But legal scholarship has not considered the possibility that dominant firms’ incentive demands might implicate the statutory protections enacted to protect against unfair methods of competition and corporate dominance more broadly. This Article develops a historical, economic, and …
