Piloting A Zero-Emission Delivery Zone In Downtown Portland, Art Pearce, Sarah Pullman, Jacob Sherman

PSU Transportation Seminars

The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) was awarded a nearly $2 million Strengthening Mobility and Revolutionizing Transportation (SMART) Grant by the US Department of Transportation (USDOT) in Fall 2023 to pilot the country’s first regulated Zero-Emission Delivery Zone in downtown Portland and test digital infrastructure tools. This project will test an innovative set of incentives and regulations to better understand what technology and strategies municipalities can use to support and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the freight sector.

While other cities in the United States have piloted voluntary Zero-Emission Delivery Zones (ZEDZs) to encourage the transition of commercial fleets to …

The Status Of Women Leaders In Government – Utah Cities And Towns: A 2024 Update, April Townsend, Susan R. Madsen, Kolene Anderson

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Research shows that communities and organizations increasingly thrive when men and women work together in leadership roles.1 Gender inclusivity benefits not only businesses, churches, schools, and state legislatures, but also state and local governments. American democracy is grounded in the idea of representation.2 “Representative bureaucracy” is the term for government entities employing a workforce that shares the demographic characteristics of the communities they serve,3 and the combined experiences and perspectives of that workforce represent and benefit all residents within its purview.4 This includes the thousands of government professionals who run the daily functions of municipalities in …

Preservation To Publisher: Flipping Textbooks Open Using The Und Scholarly Commons, Zeineb Yousif

Librarian Posters and Presentations

In 2017, the Chester Fritz Library launched our institutional repository, the UND Scholarly Commons. Our first publication was an open access edition of The History of North Dakota, a widely used state history book that we purchased the rights to publish digitally. After receiving scans of the print book from the publisher, we created PDF, EPUB, and MOBI versions of the book and disseminated it widely across OER indexing platforms.

We drew on this experience in 2023, when we partnered with North Dakota’s Department of Public Instruction to release digital editions of a series of textbooks about the culture and …

The Raye Montague Digital Collection, Paola Cavallari Dec 2024

The Raye Montague Digital Collection, Paola Cavallari

Theses and Dissertations

The Raye Montague Digital Collection consists of 735 items that have been digitized and catalogued to tell the story of Raye Montague, the United States Navy hidden figure. The Collection addresses the need to remedy decades of historical invisibility Raye Montague was subjected to because of gender and racial discrimination despite her fundamental contributions to U.S. history. This thesis details how the Collection inserts Raye Montague within a broader historical context that uncovers the role Black women had as federal employees in the U.S. military during and after World War II. It also explains how, in designing the Collection, I …

Bounded By Place: Rural Students, College Knowledge, Educational Motivation, And College Going, Sarah Rutt Williams, Frimpomaa Ampaw, Skylar R. Duke, Anne M. Hornak

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Rural students face inequitable access to educational opportunities when compared to their suburban and urban counterparts (Koricich et al., 2018; Ovink et al., 2018), and their postsecondary experiences and outcomes remain understudied. Research on the role of college knowledge in the persistence of this educational inequity is particularly scarce. Using a non-experimental survey design, the present study seeks to understand the effect of rural students’ college knowledge on their postsecondary intentions. We use surveys completed by rural high school seniors and logistic regression to analyze the relationship between students’ college knowledge, their motivation, and their postsecondary plans. Our findings show …

Introduction To Geomorphology By Frank Ahnert., Caroline Davis Dec 2024

Introduction To Geomorphology By Frank Ahnert., Caroline Davis

The Geographical Bulletin

This English translation of Ahnert's Einfuhrung in die Geomorph%gie is not the standard descriptive catalog of geomorphic form and landscapes. It provides an introductory textbook which is strongly grounded in systems theory and process-oriented geomorphology. This text provides more than a short general reference to theory. The theoretical foundations of geomorphology are clearly presented and accessible at the introductory level. To have process response models emphasized in an introductory text is unusual and refreshing. In addition, the theoretical themes are linked throughout the text to processes and descriptions.

A Geographical Analysis Of Sports Wagering, Jeffrey P. Richetto, Brian Allen

The Geographical Bulletin

Gambling, in the forms of sports wagering and casino gaming, has increasingly spread across North America throughout the past 20 years. In fact, all but two states have legalized gaming venues, and in a substantial number of these states, gambling is continually becoming a mega-industry. Most studies focus on economic development and ethical issues related to gambling. By broadening the perspective of place on gambling activities this study examines the geographic undertones related to sports wagering. It is estimated that over $130 billion is wagered annually in the United States on all sporting events and that the overwhelming majority of …

A New Gentrification? A Case Study Of The Russification Of Brighton Beach, New York, Keith Brown, Elvin Wyly Dec 2024

A New Gentrification? A Case Study Of The Russification Of Brighton Beach, New York, Keith Brown, Elvin Wyly

The Geographical Bulletin

Gentrification is often equated with the residential and consumption preferences of young, white, native-born professionals. The link between gentrification and "yuppies," however, does not seem adequate to capture the complexity oftrends currently underway in many city neighborhoods. In this paper, census data and fieldwork are utilized to develop a case study of Russian immigration and neighborhood revitalization in Brighton Beach, New York City. " Russification" has revitalized housing demand and retail activity by altering the class composition of the neighborhood, while also increasing inequality and inducing displacement similar to that observed in other gentrifying districts. Nevertheless, important cultural and policy-related …

The Context Of Mahan's 'Debatable Zone', William D. Walters, Jr. Dec 2024

The Context Of Mahan's 'Debatable Zone', William D. Walters, Jr.

The Geographical Bulletin

At the turn of the 19th century American naval historian Alfred Thayer Mahan (1840- 1914) developed a concept which he called the "Debatable Zone". This was a wide arc stretching from Turkey to China which Mahan argued was the key to future world development. Mahan's Debatable Zone has become the best known American contribution to early geopolitical thinking, and is often seen as one of the roots of Mackinder's heartland theory. However, Mahan's ideas can be better understood in the context of popular writing on Asia at the time. Although he had the ear of key American political figures, they …

Projections And Perceptions-Editorial Comment. The Import Of The Soviet Collapse For The Social Sciences, John Howard Wilhelm Dec 2024

Projections And Perceptions-Editorial Comment. The Import Of The Soviet Collapse For The Social Sciences, John Howard Wilhelm

The Geographical Bulletin

For me, as a Russian/Soviet specialist in economics, the collapse of the Soviet system offered a wonderful opportunity. It offered the opportunity to reintegrate into our civilization a peoples-ethnic Russians, Ukrainians, Belorussians, Baltic peoples, Armenians, Georgians, etc.- who prior to the great disasters of the First World War and the October Revolution of 1917 had contributed so much to European culture and intellectual life. Unfortunately, to date the opportunity has largely not been realized. It has not been realized for a number of reasons including: the terrible legacies left by Soviet rule, the failure to have really removed communists from …

The Relationship Between Politics And Public Drinking Water In The District Of Columbia, William James Smith, Jr. Dec 2024

The Relationship Between Politics And Public Drinking Water In The District Of Columbia, William James Smith, Jr.

The Geographical Bulletin

The nature ofthe relationship between politics and public drinking water in the District of Columbia is examined. Thecase study of the nexus between water resource management, public health, public relations, and politics sheds light on issues that may affect quality and quantity of drinking water in the United States. The country has a complex set of laws and policies that effectively split responsibility for individual aspects of drinking water management among a variety of governmental and non-governmental agencies. Attimes, this shared responsibility breeds conflict that occurs at the expense of the general public. By examining the root cause of political …

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Post-dispersal male African elephants (Loxodonta africana) live within complex social networks. To quantify the consistency of male elephant character (or personality) within these networks, we employed behavioral repeatability analysis tools across social and environmental contexts. We collected behavioral data from thirty-four individually-identified male elephants at the same waterhole over five field seasons (2007–2011) in Etosha National Park, Namibia. Using repeatability models to assess ten behavioral categories, we found five behaviors (affiliation, aggression, dominance, self-directed anxious, and self-directed comfort) were consistent at the individual level. Some of these behaviors were also repeatable, depending on social context. In particular, the …

Reusable Takeout Container Research And Implementation In The City Of Kalamazoo, Alexa Hempel Dec 2024

Reusable Takeout Container Research And Implementation In The City Of Kalamazoo, Alexa Hempel

Honors Theses

In 2018 alone, the United States added 830,000 tons of single use takeout containers to landfills. The City of Kalamazoo’s Community Sustainability Plan calls for a reduction of waste going into landfills, so single use takeout containers were targeted as an item to reduce for implementation of this goal.

Research was conducted on the feasibility and interest of adding reusable takeout container options to downtown Kalamazoo food establishments. This involved a survey of Kalamazoo residents which garnered over 1,100 responses and a survey of downtown food establishments, which displayed interest from both parties. However, even with the strong initial interest, …

Place Branding: More Than Just A Logo, Marilyn R. Schlake

Cornhusker Economics

Place branding can distinguish one community from another. In a landscape of locations that provide the same amenities, environments, and opportunities, branding can help a community “stand out.” However, what is usually missing is a place brand developed in association with the community’s history, values, social connections, and organization associations that have evolved.

Style, Nonetheless. Eight Good Reasons To Reject The Notion Of Style; Three Reasons To Use It Nonetheless, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel

Artl@s Bulletin

This article examines why art historians have distanced themselves from the concept of “style” since the 1960s. It draws on the critiques of Meyer Schapiro and Ernst Gombrich, which were often cited and reinterpreted by post-constructivist and decolonial historiographies since the 1990s. It identifies eight key factors: variability of definitions, normative applications, tendency towards formalism, evolutionary implications, oversimplification, historical ties to racist assumptions, hierarchical effects, and modern Western biases. However, the article argues for distinguishing the cognitive relevance of “style” from its problematic uses, exploring its potential application within a socio-historical framework.

Cet article explore les raisons pour lesquelles les …
