Economic Geography. (3,D Edition) By James O. Wheeler, Peter O. Muller, Grant Ian Thrall And Timothy J. Fik, Robert A. Rosing
The Geographical Bulletin
The third edition of Economic Geography is very similar to its predecessors in organization and content. The changes, aside from statistical updates and incorporation of new research and perspectives, are: the addition of two coauthors (Thrall and Fik); the inclusion of a chapter on the global economy; the combining of two chapters on the economic geography of energy into a single chapter; and, the movement of the last chapter, " ProblemSolving Approaches and Analytical Methods in Economic Geography," to an appendix or reference section. Additionally, the series of world maps depicting demographic characteristics and measures of economic/technological development, by country …
Soils And Geomorphology (3rd Ed.) By Peter W. Birkeland, Mike Applegarth
Soils And Geomorphology (3rd Ed.) By Peter W. Birkeland, Mike Applegarth
The Geographical Bulletin
Peter Birkeland's Soils and Geomorphology (3rd ed.) defines 'soil geomorphology' as, "the study of soils and their use in evaluating landform evolution and age, landform stability, surface processes, and past climates." Indeed, the book addresses these issues and then does more; it bridges the gap between geomorphology and pedology. The book can serve as a text for the advanced student in soil science, pedology, or geomorphology as well as a reference guide for the expert soil scientist. In short, Soils and Geomorphology is a 'must have' publication for all who work in the fields of soils and geomorphology.

The Eta Phi Chapter at the California State University at Hayward has been undergoing a process of revival. About two years ago, after 99 percent of its GTU members had graduated, a new group of geography students worked together to try to revive GTU on the Cal State Hayward campus. The current organization consists primarily of graduate students who are trying out a few ideas to breathe new life into the group. Eighteen new members have been initiated since the revival and the goal of the group is to initiate more undergraduate students during the 1999-2000 year. The Eta Phi …

The Holocene: An Environmental History By Neil Roberts. Malden, And Blackwell., Constantine N. Raphael
The Geographical Bulletin
This text, now as a second edition, is without doubt one of the finest efforts to comprehensively examine the earth 's changing surface over the past 15,000 years. The book expands coverage of en - vironmental change in the New World and has an expanded bibliography. Also new empirical information and updatad syntheses are presented. This unique geologic epoch is eventful because here is the meeting place of earth and human history. It is in fact the beginning of ge - ography since the theme of the book is to integrate people, land and time. This being the essence of …
Public High Schools' Ability To Support Gis: An Ohio Case Study, Daniel Donaldson
Public High Schools' Ability To Support Gis: An Ohio Case Study, Daniel Donaldson
The Geographical Bulletin
A survey instrument was employed to examine: the present and future computer infrastructure of Ohio's public high schools; technology funding; and the GIS awareness and perceptions of selected Ohio high school educators. Results suggest that introducing computer technology into the educational framework is a priority to Ohio's administrators and teachers alike. Furthermore, the number of technology funding sources is increasing, as is the number of dollars spent on computer technology. However, computer use in Ohio's public high schools is not ubiquitous. Nearly 40 percent of all schools surveyed do not have the computer infrastructure necessary for GIS use. While this …
Marketing A 'Sense Of Place': Representations Of Africa In Ecotour Web Sites, Daniel P. Donaldson, James A. Tyner
Marketing A 'Sense Of Place': Representations Of Africa In Ecotour Web Sites, Daniel P. Donaldson, James A. Tyner
The Geographical Bulletin
Patterns and forms of international tourism have changed significantly over the past three decades. Specifically, ecotourism has emerged as an ostensibly environmentally and culturally sensitive option to more traditional forms of tourist activities. Taking advantage of the proliferation of modern communications technologies, ecotour agencies have utilized the World Wide Web to facilitate the marketing and promotion of their tours. This paper examines the implications of Webbased technology and tourism. Through a qualitative analysis of 30 ecotour Websites, we identify and examine dominant discourses which perpetuate the representation of Africa as a dark, empty, wild continent, still open for Western appropriation. …

Teaching Geographic Information Systems In Civil Engineering/Surveying Technology Curricula, William A. Sprinsky
The Geographical Bulletin
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are becoming the norm in engineering, designing and building activities. In the Civil Engineering Technology program at Pennsylvania College of Technology emphasizing surveying, we think GIS provides an excellent example of the use of some basic tools. We teach the GIS "tool" during the second semester, in CET122, Topographic Drawing and Cartography, using Intergraph because of its flexibility in acceptance of data in a number of differing formats. First, we used a part of a municipal database from Knoxville, TN, that supports a project to widen a downtown street, for which there is a unique solution. …

ROUTE TO THE JOB: " I had just finished an MA in music theory composition in 1980, and had originally intended to get a doctorate in music. Thinking that professional jobs in music and full time teaching positions would be difficult to find, I chose to work on a (second) masters degree in a science related discipline. The reason I chose Physical Geography was because: 1) this is a concentration where I had already received a second undergraduate major; 2) the discipline is a dynamic subject area which included many courses which interested me; and 3) this is an area …

Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comment: Geographic Seeing Eyes: Mind And Lens, Barbara A. Weightman
The Geographical Bulletin
What kind of camera do you use? How do you get those "people shots"? These are only two of many questions I am asked regarding slide photography. A geographic photo- one showing patterns, relationships, characteristics, and so on-is much more a product of the geographic mind than ofthe camera lens. The type of camera you possess is a small part of the equation for good "geographic photography." Of course it is nice to have wide angle and zoom lenses: much photographic equipment is loaded with "bells and whistles." You can even purchase a multi-pocketed jacket to hold them all. However, …
Fiscal Decentralization And Education Index; Evidence From Punjab Pakistan, Noor Ahmed
Fiscal Decentralization And Education Index; Evidence From Punjab Pakistan, Noor Ahmed
CBER Conference
Disparities in the distribution of public services have persisted throughout Pakistan's history. Current research on regional development has stressed the need of evaluating human development phenomena using spatial models such as density, locality, and distance. The study investigates how fiscal decentralization influences the education index at the district level in Pakistan's Punjab province. The research is based on the education index, which has five components. The Principal Component Analysis (PCA) integrates these variables to provide a final education index. The study's findings revealed that the significant positive effects of fiscal decentralization on the education index at the district level depend …
The Gulf Of Maine Case And The Future Of Ocean Boundary Delimitation, Edward Collins Jr., Martin R. Rogoff
The Gulf Of Maine Case And The Future Of Ocean Boundary Delimitation, Edward Collins Jr., Martin R. Rogoff
Maine Law Review
On October 12, 1984, a Chamber of the International Court of Justice handed down its decision in the Case Concerning the Delimitation of the Maritime Boundary in the Gulf of Maine Area (Can. v. U.S.). By a vote of four to one, the Chamber described in geodetic lines the course of the single maritime boundary that divides the continental shelf and exclusive fishery zones of Canada and the United States in that area. The Chamber's decision ended more than a decade of conflict between the two countries concerning jurisdiction over continental shelf and fishery resources in the Georges Bank area. …

Pink Hair As A Cyberfeminist Symbol: Online Gender-Based Violence And The “Pinkup” Movement In China, Yuchen Viveka Li
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper investigates online gender-based violence (OGBV) in China using the perspectives of queer feminism and cyberfeminism. As a case study, it examines the cyberviolence against the “Pink Hair Girl” on Xiaohongshu (a popular Chinese social media platform) and the subsequent resistance by women. The study focuses on the following questions: How does the symbolic use of pink hair represent queerness and challenge gender norms in cyberspace? What are the power dynamics and types of violence faced by women in this situation? The research employs a case study method, incorporating qualitative data such as interviews and evaluations of social media …
Unpacking Affect In Taylor Swift’S Feminism, Ophelia Xiner Tong
Unpacking Affect In Taylor Swift’S Feminism, Ophelia Xiner Tong
Journal of International Women's Studies
While affective feminism and Taylor Swift’s feminist engagement have been explored in various contexts, there remains a gap in scholarly research examining how Swift transitions affect into explicit feminist practice. This paper aims to investigate how Swift utilizes a range of emotions, from negative to positive, to express her feminist sentiments, while also examining the limitations of these expressions and possible complementary strategies from her fanbase. The first section of the paper employs a theoretical framework based on affective feminism by incorporating Chadwick’s (2021) concept of “discomfort” as a valuable epistemological tool in feminist practice to contextualize Swift’s political emergence …
Feminist History: Forgotten Women Writers Of The Generation Of 1927 In Spain, Feixiang Liu
Feminist History: Forgotten Women Writers Of The Generation Of 1927 In Spain, Feixiang Liu
Journal of International Women's Studies
This study primarily focuses on the women writers of the Generation of 1927 in Spain who rose to prominence in the 1920s. Often referred to as Las Sinsombrero, these women writers have made significant contributions to gender equality and literature; however, despite their outstanding achievements, knowledge of this literary movement tends to focus only on the male writers, and it is only in recent years that the women writers in this generation have been rediscovered. The historical context in which these writers emerged—a period marked by the rise of feminism in Spain—is considered as an important part of understanding the …

Cultural Linguistics And Identity Negotiation Within The Singaporean Chinese Diaspora In Hwee Hwee Tan's Mammon Inc., Hanwen Wang, Halimah Mohamed Ali
Journal of International Women's Studies
This study explores the representation of Singaporean Chinese diasporic identity in Hwee Hwee Tan’s novel Mammon Inc. with the help of cultural linguistics. This article seeks to analyze how the novel contributes to understanding diasporic identity and cultural negotiation, with a focus on how the portrayal of the main character reshapes the delicate equilibrium between traditional values and global capitalist pressures. Drawing on Farzad Sharifian’s cultural conceptualization framework and Gary B. Palmer’s ethnosemantic analysis, this study focuses on cultural schemas and metaphors in the novel. We identify passages in Mammon Inc. that illustrate themes of identity negotiation, cultural displacement, and …

Change Is In The Minds Of The Beholders: A Sociocognitive Comparison Of Crisis Perceptions And Change Predictions: Insights From China, New Zealand, And Slovenia, Zhonghui Ding, Matevž Rašković
Economic and Business Review
Inspired by research on the "geography of thought" within social psychology, we present a cross-cultural comparative study of sociocognitive patterns between China, New Zealand, and Slovenia. We study COVID-19 risk perceptions and also explore predictions of economic trends under four specific economic scenarios. Our results show that the East-versus-West demarcation in terms of cultural boundaries is useful but insufficient to understand culturally driven predictions of economic trends. In times of economic downturn, such as the one caused by the recent COVID-19 pandemic, there seem to be universal tendencies towards pessimism. However, significant differences emerge in times of economic growth. Hence, …

Trade And Intergenerational Income Mobility: Theory And Evidence From The U.S., Italo Colantone, Gianmarco I.P. Ottaviano, Kohei Takeda
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This paper studies the impact of globalization on intergenerational income mobility. Exploiting U.S. data, we find that stronger trade exposure at the commuting zone level lowers the intergenerational income mobility of residents. In particular, higher exposure to Chinese import competition lowers the income mobility of the cohort of U.S. workers born in 1980-1982. We present a general equilibrium theory in which path dependence in sector choice of individuals over generations and mobility frictions determine the dynamics of industrial compositions across locations in a country. The theory predicts that rising import competition reduces intergenerational income mobility, consistent with the empirical findings.
The U.S.-China Chip War: Using International Relations Theories To Explain The Reasons Behind Technological Decoupling, Nolan Tavares
The U.S.-China Chip War: Using International Relations Theories To Explain The Reasons Behind Technological Decoupling, Nolan Tavares
Honors Projects in Politics, Law, and Society
Technology has transformed the world with the help of increasing advancements in semiconductor technology. This results in countries seeking a steady supply of semiconductors globally. This thesis investigates why the United States and China have implemented a mix of technological "decoupling" policies to prioritize semiconductors. The theoretical research for this thesis utilizes international relations perspectives and concepts as a framework to examine the root causes behind these policies. By using qualitative text analysis to code sources based on international relations theories, a series of direct evidence is presented to show the causes behind these policies. Furthermore, the concepts and direct …

The Scientific Landscape Of The Aging-In-Place Literature: A Bibliometric Analysis, Saman Jamshidi, Nastaran Hashemi
Architecture Faculty Research
The world’s population is aging and, as populations age, they exhibit an increased prevalence of chronic diseases, which can reduce the independence of elderly individuals. The set of initiatives known as aging in place, a common policy response to the aging population, is preferred by both the elderly population and policymakers. Aging in place is a broad and multifaceted topic that involves multiple stakeholders and academic disciplines. A science map of the literature on aging in place can help researchers pinpoint their efforts and help policymakers make informed decisions. Thus, this study maps the scientific landscape of the aging-in-place literature. …

Workforce Profile Of Alternatively Certified Teachers In South Carolina For 2022–23, Brian Cartiff, Svetlana Dmitrieva, Angela Starrett
Reports
Alternatively certified teachers constitute a growing portion of public school educators in the US. This is a trend that is expected to continue, due to the declining enrollment in traditional teacher preparation programs across recent years.
As such, this report examines the profiles of alternatively certified teachers working in South Carolina public schools (those currently enrolled in alternative certification programs and those who have completed them). The analysis delves into the demographics and placements of these teachers and explores how their employment correlates with teacher attrition rates. Altogether, it offers preliminary insights into the roles of alternatively certified educators in …
African Women Custodians: Teaching, Toponymy And Tacit Reverie In Heritage Education, Tokie Laotan-Brown
African Women Custodians: Teaching, Toponymy And Tacit Reverie In Heritage Education, Tokie Laotan-Brown
Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies
This paper investigates the critical role of women in African cultures as guardians of cultural heritage. It explores their central function in transmitting traditional ecological knowledge and practices across generations through established pedagogical methods, toponymic knowledge systems (place-names within cultural landscapes), and the cultivation of tacit knowledge. The paper emphasizes the significance of women's contributions to environmental education, often overlooked or undervalued within Western scientific paradigms. This marginalization restricts access to resources and participation in decision-making processes. It argues for the integration of traditional knowledge systems, informed by women's expertise, into formal education and pedagogy. This inclusion serves to validate …

Gestating And Co-Becoming With Ettingerian Maxtrixial Pedagogy, Barbara Bickel
Artizein: Arts and Teaching Journal
This article seeks to infuse and enrich the spheres of Arts and Education through a nascent introduction of Ettingerian Matrixial Pedagogy. To articulate this, I weave together the practices of Gestare Art Collective, which we describe as “matrixial infused education,” the “placental thinking” of Nané Jordan with my own thinking, art making and teaching. This article unfolds through interlacing theory and reflections on teachings found within art practices of Ma Poses, Womb Walking, Nap-Ins, and Spontaneous Creation-Making, along with examples of pedagogical artworkings: Metramorphosis and Muted Colours of Grief. The article closes with a poetic métissage inquiry that became—a Matrixial …
