The Changing Geography Of Population Centroids In The United States Between 1970 And 1990, Neela Thapar, David Wong, Jay Lee

The Geographical Bulletin

Population centroids are useful tools in describing the general trend of population movements. This paper uses population centroids to show the changing geography of the U.S. population between 1970 to 1990. Data of population counts of census tracts and census block groups were obtained from the Internet. With a geographical information system, weighted population centroids for each of the 48 states in the continental U.S., four census regions, and nine census divisions for 1970, 1980 and 1990 were calculated. The findings indicate that the westward movement of the U.S. population remains strong and that a southward trend of population movement …

Recent Employment Changes In Major Metropolitan Areas In The United States, James O. Wheeler, Raymond Greene

The Geographical Bulletin

The general decline in manufacturing employment is explored and contrasted with the overall growth in the number of service jobs over the period 1990-94. New York and Los Angeles suffered declines in both producer services and manufacturing employment, whereas in contrast, Cleveland and Detroit, for example, registered gains in both sectors. The majority of cities had both gains and losses. Employment in 7 categories was analyzed for the 20 largest U.S. metropolitan regions. New York and Washington DC exhibited some similarity in their roles as shapers of the services economy. Los Angeles, Chicago and Detroit were similar in the role …

Empowering Inner City Communities: Some Observations, Engdawork Desta

The Geographical Bulletin

The federal government's engagement in dealing with U.S. inner city concerns has been extensive although the results have not been satisfactory. In spite of repeated special considerations given to the problems, the lack of lasting solutions necessitated launching new urban empowerment zone and enterprise community projects in recent years. This paper reflects on the attempts made thus far to change inner city conditions and the inevitable challenges of development faced in market economies. Certain preliminary assessments are made with regard to the current Empowerment Zone project, using Baltimore city as an example.

Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comment: Rediscovering The Importance Of Geography, Alexander B. Murphy Dec 2024

Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comment: Rediscovering The Importance Of Geography, Alexander B. Murphy

The Geographical Bulletin

As Americans struggle to understand their place in a world characterized by instant global communications, shifting geopolitical relationships, and growing evidence of environmental change, it is not surprising that the venerable discipline of geography is experiencing a renaissance in the United States. More elementary and secondary schools now require courses in geography, and the College Board is adding the subject to its Advanced Placement program. In higher education, students are enrolling in geography courses in unprecedented numbers. Between 1985-86 and 1994-95 the number of bachelor's degrees awarded in geography increased from 3056 to 4295. Not coincidentally, more businesses are looking …

Effective drinking water management is an essential building block in the foundation of sustainable development. This type of socio-political and economic research demonstrates the importance of equity in "safe" drinking water distribution, and the value of watershedbased and integrated natural resource management. The importance of recognizing the provision of safe drinking water as a human …

Institutions Matter: How So?, Alper Duman Dec 2024

Institutions Matter: How So?, Alper Duman

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

This paper examines the influential theory of Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James Robinson (AJR) on the role of institutions in economic development, highlighting its strengths, limitations, and areas for further research. A central contribution of their work is the emphasis on power and conflict in institutional formation and change.

The theory's focus on the interplay between inequality, political power, and institutional change provides a valuable framework for understanding development trajectories. This paper also considers critiques of AJR's work, including the lack of robustness of the positive correlation between inclusive institutions and economic performance in lower-income countries and the significant …

Food Deserts, Socioeconomic Status, And Health In The City Of Detroit, Nolan Booth Dec 2024

Food Deserts, Socioeconomic Status, And Health In The City Of Detroit, Nolan Booth

Rushton Journal of Undergraduate Humanities Research

While many attribute health disparities in Detroit residents to the phenomenon of food deserts, this essay takes a closer look at such a seemingly obvious explanation and critically examines the concept of food deserts. This essay argues that the commonly held definition of food desert is inadequate for describing the complexities of a setting such as Detroit, and the true cause of the health disparities between the city and surrounding suburbs can be attributed to the lower socioeconomic status of the average Detroit resident, itself a product of racist housing policies and segregationist laws.

Expungement: Access To Justice Or Just More Bureaucracy? A Comparison Among The States, Meganne Lee-Rogers

Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive

A large percentage of the population have some sort of criminal record, whether felony or misdemeanor; however, only a small portion of Americans are aware that expungement of that record is an option. Expungement is the process of erasing a person’s criminal record from public records, such as that it is like the person was never arrested or convicted. However, there are universal limitations on this process, for example not all crimes are eligible for expungement. This Note discusses the vast array of expungement laws across the United States and the importance of these laws in providing convicted persons with …

Enhancing Cybersecurity Strategies Through Automated Cti Extraction, Risk Prioritization, And Privacy-Conscious Information Sharing, Spencer Rian Massengale Dec 2024

Enhancing Cybersecurity Strategies Through Automated Cti Extraction, Risk Prioritization, And Privacy-Conscious Information Sharing, Spencer Rian Massengale

Theses and Dissertations

Cybersecurity operations require the ability to collect and analyze large amounts of cyber threat intelligence (CTI) to assess risks and formulate defensive strategies against emerging threats. This task has become increasingly complex due to the rapid evolution of cyber threats and the growing volume of unstructured, natural-language CTI sources. The scale of data and analysis needed to utilize CTI effectively far exceeds humans' manual capacity, especially for organizations with limited resources. This research focuses on leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) and machine learning techniques to enhance CTI extraction, risk assessment, and data sharing. We utilized LLMs to automate the extraction …

Hella Much Variation: Intensification In Northern California English, As Seen Through The South Bay, Clara Mcmahon Dec 2024

Hella Much Variation: Intensification In Northern California English, As Seen Through The South Bay, Clara Mcmahon

Yale Working Papers in Grammatical Diversity

In this paper I present a unified syntactic analysis to account for all of the typical usages of the Northern California lexical item hella. Specifically, I focus on hella’s usage in the South Bay—a subregion of the San Francisco Bay Area which corresponds roughly to Santa Clara County. Contrary to Boboc (2016), who proposes that Bay Area speakers do not allow hella to modify silent elements, I provide evidence that hella is a degree word which can license silent elements for South Bay speakers. Using a silent MANY and a silent MUCH (Kayne 2005), all of hella’s …

Diversity And Characteristics Of The Oral Microbiome Associated With Self-Reported Ancestral/Ethnic Groups, Qingguo Wang, Bing-Yan Wang, She'neka Williams, Hua Xie

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Periodontitis disproportionately affects genetic ancestral/ethnic groups. To characterize the oral microbiome from different genetic ancestral/ethnic groups, we collected 161 dental plaque samples from self-identified African Americans (AAs), Caucasian Americans (CAs), and Hispanic Americans (HAs) with clinical gingival health or biofilm-induced gingivitis on an intact periodontium. DNA was extracted from these samples, and then DNA libraries were prepared and sequenced using an Illumina NovaSeq high-throughput sequencer. We found significant differences in the diversity and abundance of microbial taxa among dental plaque samples of the AA, CA, and HA groups. We also identified unique microbial species in a self-reported ancestral/ethnic group. Moreover, …

Psychotropics And Fall Reduction Through Nursing Education, Jenny L. Stillman Dec 2024

Psychotropics And Fall Reduction Through Nursing Education, Jenny L. Stillman

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Falls in long-term care centers (LTC) remain a significant problem due to their association with increased mortality, healthcare costs, and decreased patient outcomes. A major contributing factor to falls is the use of psychotropic medications commonly prescribed in LTC facilities despite evidence against their use. This paper discusses a quasi-experimental study aimed at reducing falls through nursing education on how psychotropics contribute to falls. The study also highlights the regulatory requirements for LTC facilities to monitor and reduce fall occurrences and the efforts made by a State Veterans Home to address the number of falls. The results demonstrate a reduction …

Hellenic Cohesion: A Historic Approach To Transnationalism, Particularism, And Cosmopolitanism In The Greek Immigrant Communities Of Wyoming, Patrick Michael Pace Dec 2024

Hellenic Cohesion: A Historic Approach To Transnationalism, Particularism, And Cosmopolitanism In The Greek Immigrant Communities Of Wyoming, Patrick Michael Pace

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Greek immigration to the United States began slowly in the late nineteenth century but found its stride by the second decade of the twentieth century. Behind the incrementally increasing numbers of Greeks emigrating from Greece was an economic collapse related to a mismanaged agricultural industry, leading mostly young men to pursue economic reward abroad in support of families and villages back home. Most early Greek migrants anticipated an eventual return home; however, many moved beyond simple sojourning into permanent settlement for a variety of reasons, including the establishment of proprietorships, the building of families, and nativist driven anti-immigrant legislation. For …

A Transformative Era Of Action: How The Public Land And Private Sectors Are Realigning To Solve The Energy Transition And Climate Change, Roger Martella, Jillian Lavery, Michael O'Hora Dec 2024

A Transformative Era Of Action: How The Public Land And Private Sectors Are Realigning To Solve The Energy Transition And Climate Change, Roger Martella, Jillian Lavery, Michael O'Hora

Pace Environmental Law Review

Over the last 50 years, environmental laws have transformed the areas we inhabit—and Planet Earth—for the better. Since the daybreak of the environmental law movement in 1970, our air and water are clearer, the lands we navigate are cleaner, and the food and products we consume are safer. Unfortunately, this same legal framework has not met the same success when tackling two of the biggest challenges of ours and future generations: the energy transition and climate change. Since the Supreme Court empowered the Environmental Protection Agency to act on climate change over fifteen years ago, conventional environmental laws and policies …

A Wīnak Perspective On Cosmovisíon Maya And Eco-Justice Education, Arcia Tecun Dec 2024

A Wīnak Perspective On Cosmovisíon Maya And Eco-Justice Education, Arcia Tecun

Maya America: Journal of Essays, Commentary, and Analysis

This article responds to questions of relational ethics in Indigenous mobility with a critically conscious approach to cosmovisíon Maya in Soonkahni (Salt Lake Valley). An urban and mobile Mayan positionality, identified as Wīnak, guides an analysis of complex Indigenous experiences, and possibilities found in Eco-Justice. The limits from the prevailing and dominant colonial logics of conservation and environmentalism are re-imagined through Indigenous approaches to ‘Earth Wellbeing’. The application of critically conscious cosmovisíon Maya reveals a simultaneous challenge to systems of power, and to formations of an Indigenous relational ethic that is both locally meaningful and globally relevant. This essay concludes …

Literary Structure Of Proverbs And The Stages Of A Righteous Life, Craig W. Babcock Dec 2024

Literary Structure Of Proverbs And The Stages Of A Righteous Life, Craig W. Babcock

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The structure of Proverbs and the applied wisdom of the father and mother which begin with the son in the first chapter are present throughout the entire book of Proverbs creating an ongoing narrative literary structure connecting the individual proverbs. The narrative literary structure demonstrates the shifting nature of the moment of life for the son in life and beyond death. To demonstrate the more prominent literary structure, the son follows a hero’s journey, with the son ending as a sage. The theological understanding of the son and the fear of Yahweh guide him through the complex nature of life …

Wildlife Factors And Zoonotic Spillover In Sub-Saharan Africa, Bernard Mgba Dec 2024

Wildlife Factors And Zoonotic Spillover In Sub-Saharan Africa, Bernard Mgba

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Zoonotic spillover, the transmission of infectious pathogens from animals to humans, is a critical public health concern in Sub-Saharan Africa. This study examines the role of wildlife factors in zoonotic spillover within this region, highlighting the complex interplay between human-wildlife interactions, environmental changes, and emerging zoonotic diseases. The research underscores that Sub-Saharan Africa is particularly vulnerable due to its rich biodiversity, cultural practices involving wildlife, and socioeconomic challenges. Factors such as habitat encroachment, wildlife consumption, and inadequate health infrastructure contribute to the heightened risk of zoonotic spillover. The study employs an online survey followed with a contextual analysis, and socioeconomic …

The purpose of this hermeneutic phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of Midwest nurses related to their decision to leave academic faculty positions. The theory guiding this study was Herzberg’s motivation-hygiene theory. The motivation-hygiene theory examines the factors that inform the relationship between satisfaction and lack of satisfaction, as well as dissatisfaction and lack of dissatisfaction. Herzberg outlined several motivating factors that influence employees to perform at their best, and several hygiene factors that negatively impact performance. Additionally, Dewey’s experiential learning theory underpinned the study. The lived experience comprises the physical environment, perceptions of the person, and the …

Job 28 As A Thematic Unifier Clarifying Human Responsibility Through The Revelation Of Wisdom And Understanding In Relationship To Yahweh, Michael G. Potter Dec 2024

Job 28 As A Thematic Unifier Clarifying Human Responsibility Through The Revelation Of Wisdom And Understanding In Relationship To Yahweh, Michael G. Potter

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The goal of the project was to discern and articulate the literary relationship of Job 28 to its larger literary context and demonstrate that the chapter serves the rhetorical purpose of the author to legitimize the kingship of Yahweh over creation. The study argues that Job 28 functions as a thematic unifier that clarifies human responsibility in relationship to Yahweh. The project demonstrates that Job 28 functions as the integrative center of the book and is a figurative interpolation, a metaphorical embellishment to the search for wisdom and answers observed in the defense and debate cycles (Job 4-27; 28:1-22) while …

Coastal Waters Of The World: Trends,Threats And Strategies By Don Hinrichsen, C. Nicholas Raphael

The Geographical Bulletin

Without doubt Coastal Waters of the World is one of the most comprehensive books to document diverse regional problems in the near and offshore marine coastal zones of the earth. Following a brief introduction two chapters are devoted to riparian population patterns, and marine resources and fisheries. Fourteen chapters are then presented outlining issues along the earth 's most obvious boundary-the zone separating the land and sea. Each regional chapter (e.g. Latin America, North and Baltic Seas, East Africa) has a similar format: characteristics of population and the state of environmental quality followed by a discussion of management efforts and …
