Paraphrasing Europe: Translation In Contemporary Filipino History, Portia L. Reyes, Ramon Guillermo
Paraphrasing Europe: Translation In Contemporary Filipino History, Portia L. Reyes, Ramon Guillermo
Kritika Kultura
This paper studies three annotated translations into Filipino that have been inspired by the controversial historiographical movement called Pantayong Pananaw (from us-for us perspective), which argued for the use of the national language in academic study: San Agustin’s 1720 letter (by Dedina Lapar), Canseco’s 1897 account of Cavite during the Philippine Revolution (by Rhommel Hernandez), and Marx and Engel’s 1848 Communist Manifesto (by Zeus Salazar). In seeking to understand the translational practices that assist in the production and institutionalization of knowledge today, we ask: what transpires in the Filipinization of an account? In which way is translation significant to indigenization …

American Globality And The Us Prison Regime: State Violence And White Supremacy From Abu Ghraib To Stockton To Bagong Diwa, Dylan Rodriguez
American Globality And The Us Prison Regime: State Violence And White Supremacy From Abu Ghraib To Stockton To Bagong Diwa, Dylan Rodriguez
Kritika Kultura
What do we make of the abiding significance of state-sanctioned human captivity and imprisonment on a massive, unprecedented scale as a primary American modality of civilization? Democracy? Modernity and (postmodern) Nation-building? The American prison intertwines as it animates two structural logics: 1) white supremacy as a historical modality of social (dis)organization, and 2) the circulation, militarization, and mobilization of allegedly local or domestic US social formations across global geographies, including and beyond the Philippines. This paper considers the formation of the United States prison industrial complex as an epochal global regime that is integral to the fabric of an incipient …
The Case Of The Disappearing Filipino American Houseboy: Speculation On Double Indemnity And The United States Imperialism, Victor Bascara
The Case Of The Disappearing Filipino American Houseboy: Speculation On Double Indemnity And The United States Imperialism, Victor Bascara
Kritika Kultura
The creations of a new cultural formation, US imperialism, development, and globalization are traced in this article by the use of James M. Cain’s 1936 pulp novella-turned-film Double Indemnity. Representations of the Fil-Am houseboy, his disappearance and re-appearance in the texts, provide an impetus for discovering the cultural transitions from the colonial to the postcolonial periods.

The Advent Of Modern Irish Drama And The Abjection Of Peasant Popular Culture: Folklore, Fairs And Faction Fighting, Mark Phelan
The Advent Of Modern Irish Drama And The Abjection Of Peasant Popular Culture: Folklore, Fairs And Faction Fighting, Mark Phelan
Kritika Kultura
This paper is part of a larger project in which the author is interested in recovering popular performative traditions and practices that have been occluded by the modernist project of the Irish Revival. This erasure has been compounded by subsequent historiographical paradigms that have reinforced the revivalist narrative of theatre history and excluded indigenous forms, traditions and practices (mumming, rhymers, strawboys) along with the wider performative culture of patterns, wakes, fairs, faction fights etc. This essay subjects to scrutiny what the author sees as a disjuncture between the riotous reality of peasant popular culture and its representation in Revivalist dramas …
Forest Response To Increasingly Frequent Fire And Drought Disturbances, Kevin G. Willson
Forest Response To Increasingly Frequent Fire And Drought Disturbances, Kevin G. Willson
Biology ETDs
Changes in fire regimes and drought intensity have increased fire and drought severity in southwestern forests, decreasing forest resilience to recent changes in climate. As tree response and regeneration after disturbance are critical for forest persistence, this dissertation assesses ponderosa pine regeneration patterns after high-severity fire, tree growth response to the reintroduction of frequent-fire, and tree growth response to multiyear droughts in fire-maintained and fire-excluded forests. We found that high-severity patch locations were more likely to regenerate when positioned downwind, downslope, and near intact forest. Trees had similar growth responses to first-entry fires and reburns following long-term fire-exclusion. After experiencing …
Marvelous Bodies: Italy's New Migrant Cinema, Vetri Nathan
Marvelous Bodies: Italy's New Migrant Cinema, Vetri Nathan
Purdue Studies in Romance Literatures
Historically a source of emigrants to Northern Europe and the New World, Italy has rapidly become a preferred destination for immigrants from the global South. Life in the land of la dolce vita has not seemed so sweet recently, as Italy struggles with the cultural challenges caused by this surge in immigration. Marvelous Bodies by Vetri Nathan explores thirteen key full-length Italian films released between 1990 and 2010 that treat this remarkable moment of cultural role reversal through a plurality of styles. In it, Nathan argues that Italy sees itself as the quintessential internal Other of Western Europe, and that …
New Trends In The Study Of Haredi Culture And Society, David N. Myers, Nechumi Malovicki-Yaffe
New Trends In The Study Of Haredi Culture And Society, David N. Myers, Nechumi Malovicki-Yaffe
The Jewish Role in American Life: An Annual Review
Who are Haredim? And why are they the source of both increasing attention and continuing misunderstanding? New Trends in the Study of Haredi Culture and Society draws on the innovative research of leading scholars from a variety of disciplines—including history, religious studies, demography, linguistics, and geography—to trace the growing prominence of Haredi (often called ultra-Orthodox) Jews in Jewish life. Haredi Jews are committed to preserving a measure of segregation from the rest of society consistent with the guiding principles of their forebears; yet increasingly, they are appearing more visibly and assertively in public spaces. Demographic analysis suggests that they will …
Construction Site Planning And Logistical Operations: Site-Focused Management For Builders, Second Edition, Randy R. Rapp, Bradley L. Benhart
Construction Site Planning And Logistical Operations: Site-Focused Management For Builders, Second Edition, Randy R. Rapp, Bradley L. Benhart
Purdue Handbooks in Building Construction
Organizing and administering a construction site so that the right resources get to the right place in a timely fashion demands strong leadership and a well-defined, disciplined process. Good logistical operations enable profitability, and this book is the essential, muddy boots guide to such management. Written by experienced educator–practitioners, Construction Site Planning and Logistical Operations is a popular guide to the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed by project superintendents, especially, but useful to all constructors. This second edition is updated to include new technologies, resources, and details of operational planning. Leadership imperatives and management techniques remain integrated throughout. The book …
Modern Agricultural Servitude: The Modern Farm Worker Experience In The Salinas Valley, Jesus E. Tavarez
Modern Agricultural Servitude: The Modern Farm Worker Experience In The Salinas Valley, Jesus E. Tavarez
Chicana and Chicano Studies ETDs
The prevailing narrative in Chicanx studies focuses on the historical labor activism of the United Farm Workers (UFW) in the 1960s and ‘70s. I am particularly interested in examining the contemporary campesino experience in the Salinas Valley by discussing the history behind Mexican cheap labor, low wages, exploitive work conditions with inadequate healthcare, agrochemical exposure, and historical consciousness of farm workers. I will argue that farm workers are in dire need of a migratory reform as an approach to improve the working conditions of farm workers throughout California. This research aims to shed light on how the multi-billion-dollar agribusiness industry …
Okinawa Studies In Taiwan Under Japanese Rule: Focusing On The Use Of The Word “Nantō”, Takahiro Teshima
Okinawa Studies In Taiwan Under Japanese Rule: Focusing On The Use Of The Word “Nantō”, Takahiro Teshima
Kritika Kultura
In the modern period, certain research on Okinawa utilizing the noun “nantō,” which signified the southern islands, was known as Nantō studies. It accentuated Okinawa as the southernmost portion, or one component, of Japan, emphasizing Okinawa’s identity as a place that preserves old Japanese culture, based on the hypothesis that culture originates in the center of a cultural region and spreads to the frontier. This article examines the possibilities and limitations of Nantō studies in colonial Taiwan. Under the academic guidance at Taihoku Imperial University, including Japanese history, which had previously received less attention in prior research, Nantō studies could …
Communication As A Mobile Field: The Critical Dialogue And Exchange Between The Vatican Doctrine On Social Communication And Secular Communication Sciences, Joyce Arriola
Kritika Kultura
The Decree on Social Communication called Inter Mirifica was one of the 16 documents that were produced by the Catholic Church at the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965). It guided the Church in engaging the modern world, particularly through the means of communication. This came at the height of the positivist inflection of communication studies, which began as an academic discipline when the first doctoral program was established in the United States in 1943. While the communication discipline grew steadily as a science, producing its own theories and adopting its specific research methodologies and protocols, it also developed along humanistic lines, …
Climate Change And The Construction Of Compromised Agency In Selected Contemporary Fiction, Jessica Murray
Climate Change And The Construction Of Compromised Agency In Selected Contemporary Fiction, Jessica Murray
Kritika Kultura
As the realities of climate change occupy an increasingly prominent position in all spheres of contemporary societies, the producers of cultural products grapple with these dynamics in their work. Even in texts where the climate and environmental concerns are tangential to the primary narratives, authors of contemporary fiction tend to make at least some passing reference to these dynamics. Fiction offers a space of almost limitless possibilities where writers can offer radically innovative modes of being in a world that is changing at an unprecedented rate due to anthropogenic activities. The construction of agency and the capacity of agents to …
Abide With Me: A Social Ecological Perspective In Selected Pandemic Poetry, Amany Abdullah Abdelaziz Eldiasty, Eman Ebeida Mansour
Abide With Me: A Social Ecological Perspective In Selected Pandemic Poetry, Amany Abdullah Abdelaziz Eldiasty, Eman Ebeida Mansour
Kritika Kultura
This article traces the core principles of the social ecological approach, namely, the interconnectedness of social communities and their integration into the natural world in selected poems written by contemporary poets during the coronavirus pandemic and collected in Poetry in Response to the Pandemic, published in 2020 by St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Arlington, VA. Applying a qualitative approach that integrates interpretive and analytical readings of the selected poems based on Daniel Stokols’s views on social ecology, it argues that although social networks facilitated community engagements during the pandemic (particularly during the lockdown), virtual reality failed to sustain the social …
Alikhan Bokeikhan’S Literary Preservation Of Kazakh Identity Against Colonial Ideology, Assem Osken, Dikhan Qamzabekuly, Bekarys Nuriman
Alikhan Bokeikhan’S Literary Preservation Of Kazakh Identity Against Colonial Ideology, Assem Osken, Dikhan Qamzabekuly, Bekarys Nuriman
Kritika Kultura
In the history of the world, imperialist countries happened to pursue a policy of colonization to destroy ethnic consciousness, culture, language, and knowledge. This article comprehensively analyzes the literary works of the national leader Alikhan Bokeikhan, who opposed the policy of the Russian Empire in the 19th century and its successor, the Soviet government in the 20th century that was aimed at gradually destroying the Kazakh people as a distinct group of Kazakh people. The research shows that literary translations, critical articles, and folklore samples of Bokeikhan greatly contributed to the preservation of Kazakh language, religion, culture, national education and …
From Social Realism To The Specter Of Abstraction: Conceptualizing The Visual Practices Of H. R. Ocampo, Jonathan Beller
From Social Realism To The Specter Of Abstraction: Conceptualizing The Visual Practices Of H. R. Ocampo, Jonathan Beller
Kritika Kultura
This study of National Artist H. R. Ocampo argues for the critical necessity of producing a theoretical language adequate to modernist abstract painting in the Philippines. It situates Ocampo’s stylistic shift from Social Realism to what is called “Neorealism” in the context of a post-war exhaustion of the narrative possibilities of nationalism. Both as a result of foreign domination and in order to get at a “pre-ideological” reality, the visual is first sheared off from a matrix of linguistic signification unavoidably overdetermined by questions of the nation. Later, with the Marcos appropriations of Philippine modernism, the momentarily autonomous visual indexed …
Challenges For Cultural Studies Under The Rule Of Global War, Neferti X. M. Tadiar
Challenges For Cultural Studies Under The Rule Of Global War, Neferti X. M. Tadiar
Kritika Kultura
Based on a lecture delivered not long after the US launched its so-called war on terror in Iraq in the aftermath of 9/11, the paper addresses the challenges for cultural studies in the midst of “the emergence of a global network of quasi military states in tributary relations to the US super security state” and “the emergence of a global counter public or constituency.” With a note of urgency and particular attention to the Philippine context, the paper expresses the need “to interpret, articulate, and participate in the social struggles taking place in and through cultural practice” which begins with …
Conflicts Over Heritage: The Case Of Quiapo, Victor S. Venida
Conflicts Over Heritage: The Case Of Quiapo, Victor S. Venida
Kritika Kultura
Quiapo is one district marked out as a heritage district under the proposed Comprehensive Land-use Plan for the City of Manila. The plan aims at rationalizing land-use of the city, redesigning the property tax system and creating livelihood activities to promote economic development and create a livable, attractive city. As a heritage district Quiapo can realize substantial economic activity as this generates tourist interest, retail activities and outlets for local crafts and small-scale manufacturing. But the question looms as to whose heritage will be preserved, as Quiapo was once known as an upper class residential area, home to many famous …

A Constitution Of The Earth, To Save Humanity, Luigi Ferrajoli
Buffalo Law Review
Humanity is facing one of the most dramatic moments in its history. There are several global challenges and problems that are not part of the political agenda of national governments, even though their solution is crucial for the survival of humanity.
The Social Matter Of Opioids: Glitches In Immunity Beyond The Human, Nathan A. Leach
The Social Matter Of Opioids: Glitches In Immunity Beyond The Human, Nathan A. Leach
American Studies ETDs
The Social Matter of Opioids: Glitches in Immunity Beyond the Human examines the contemporary opioid crisis and its relationship to capitalism, imperialism, and biomedicine. This dissertation also considers how the twin processes of crisis and racialization relate to how human-opioid entanglements perform and transgress normative anthropological assumptions of difference. Through theories of biopolitics, Black feminism, queer of color critique, and psychoanalytic insight, I argue for a more critical account of the entanglement of humans with opioids where processes of capitalist and imperial crisis produce novel forms of social ontology. I substantiate this by examining speculative tissue economies, interspecies relationality, draconian …
“Know What I’M Sayin’?”: Advocating Hip-Hop As A Primary Source For Historical Scholarship, Christopher Smith
“Know What I’M Sayin’?”: Advocating Hip-Hop As A Primary Source For Historical Scholarship, Christopher Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Rap, hip-hop’s most characteristic element, evolved from cultural practices combining in New York and spread across the United States in the latter half of the twentieth century. This thesis argues in favor of the use of rap as primary source material in future historical research. Authenticity has always surrounded hip-hop, making rap a window into artists’ perspectives. Storytelling traditions in rap’s roots allow for fiction’s use as a tool to discuss reality in lyrics. To demonstrate rap’s strengths as a primary source, the thesis examines Let’s Get Free, dead prez’s 2000 debut album. The song “They Schools” is dissected section-by-section …

Graduate Students And On-Campus Engagement, Lakeisha Jackson, Victoria Navarro Benavides, Jacqueline Saarenas
MAGIS: Student Development Journal
Research focusing on graduate student attrition, services, and needs is slim. Scholars investigating experiences of graduate students have attributed this gap in research to the limited number of master’s- and doctoral-level students who attend universities (Cooke, Sims, & Peyrefitte, 1995). With Seattle University enrolling approximately 2,000 graduate students as of October 2012 and steadily increasing the amount of graduate degrees awarded per academic year since 2008, the university benefits from learning about the diverse needs of this population (Seattle University, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012). The purpose of this quantitative study is to understand graduate student experience at Seattle University. More …

Conversations On Cultural Heritage: Confirming The Family Home As An Archive, Vanessa Reyes, Vanessa Irvin
Conversations On Cultural Heritage: Confirming The Family Home As An Archive, Vanessa Reyes, Vanessa Irvin
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Family archives, as repositories of cultural heritage, play a crucial role in preserving multi-generational knowledge. The family is the first collaborative unit in which community memory-keeping is operationalized. The family home is an archive or library of data for generations of family members living through historical movements, patterns of migration, and technological advancement. Thus, 'home' is a data-rich repository of local history. Memory-keeping tasks, such as recording events in family Bibles and maintaining photo albums, scrapbooks, and journals, are multi-generational literacy practices. The stories within a family archive endure, but the narrators may change over time. Archiving family cultural heritage …

Imagining The Future Of Records Management: An Analysis Of The Srikandi In Indonesia Through Documentation Studies, Suprayitno Suprayitno, Rahmi Rahmi, Zulfatun Sofiyani
Proceedings from the Document Academy
The SRIKANDI application, a cornerstone of Indonesia's digital records management initiative, embodies the nation's commitment to modernizing governance through electronic systems. This study employs Niels Windfeld Lund’s Complementary Documentation Analysis Model to dissect SRIKANDI'S evolution (diachronic analysis) and its current state (synchronic analysis), offering a comprehensive understanding of its role in Indonesia's e-government landscape. Diachronically, SRIKANDI'S development reflects a strategic shift from fragmented, standalone applications towards a unified, interoperable platform, as mandated by Presidential Regulation No. 95 of 2018. This transition aims to streamline government processes, reduce redundancy, and enhance budget efficiency. Synchronically, SRIKANDI is evaluated as a digital platform …
Solidaristic Grief: A Framework For Political Organizing, Gabe K
Solidaristic Grief: A Framework For Political Organizing, Gabe K
Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities
My purpose in this article is to outline the potential of grief to be foundational to a collectivist politics of solidarity and interdependence. Drawing on research in human psychology, I will argue that because people form core beliefs based more on emotion than rationality, movements for justice and equality must utilize emotion to convince people to dedicate time and energy to helping their cause. Defined in this article as a process of reconstructing one’s “world of meaning” and very identity in the face of loss, grief is by nature transformative. Grief also challenges atomistic conceptions of individuality to reframe how …

Constructions Of Pertenencia Fluyente: Latinx Religious Placemaking Beyond Community & Belonging In The Midwest U.S., Karla García
Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities
How has the Latinx diaspora utilized the Catholic Church as a space to construct an environment of “home”? To answer this question, I draw upon five semi-structured ethnographic interviews conducted with parish members and leadership at the shared parish of San Miguel Arcángel, situated in the Upper Midwest. Understanding that community exists partly due to parish members' distinct methods of community cultivation over the last twenty years, I question if belonging inherently follows. Analysis of interview responses shows that community, belonging, and tensions coexist within the parish. Puerto Rican scholar Felix Padilla’s 1985 study utilizes the term “situational identity,” while …
