Neurodivergent Students And Higher Education: Barriers, Challenges, And Supporting Measures, Courtney Tricarichi-Funk

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

When neurodivergent students attempt to go to colleges and universities, they often face barriers in accessing higher education and encounter challenges post-admission. This study explores what measures higher learning institutions can develop and implement to make postsecondary education more accessible and less challenging for neurodivergent students by answering the following questions: • What barriers do neurodivergent students face when planning to access higher education? • What challenges do neurodivergent students encounter in higher education after they are admitted? • What measures can be developed and implemented to help neurodivergent students access and succeed in higher education? To address these questions, …

Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Programming For African American Students At Predominantly White Institutions, Connie Love Jan 2025

Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Programming For African American Students At Predominantly White Institutions, Connie Love

All Capstone Projects

This qualitative study explores the impact of student support programs on the success of African American students in higher education. While existing research emphasizes the need for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programming and highlights longstanding disparities affecting African Americans in education, limited attention has been given to the influence of student support programs and the role of belonging in terms of academic success. Furthermore, the lived experience and narratives of African American students remain underrepresented in the literature.

This study examined the perspective of nine graduates from a student support program at a predominantly White institution (PWI) in the …

Exploring Historical Landscapes: The Public Land Survey System And Florida's Original 1820 - 1845 Survey, Georgianna Strode, Beverly Renard, Sophie Coppage, Elizabeth Smith Jan 2025

Exploring Historical Landscapes: The Public Land Survey System And Florida's Original 1820 - 1845 Survey, Georgianna Strode, Beverly Renard, Sophie Coppage, Elizabeth Smith

Florida Geographer

The Land Ordinance of 1785 established the rectangular township-and-section survey system that became the foundation of the Public Land Survey System (PLSS), enabling the United States government to systematically map, divide, and sell western lands as the nation expanded. By imposing a standardized, federally controlled grid, the PLSS facilitated orderly settlement, taxation, and land markets while consolidating state and federal authority over territory. However, this system prioritized administrative efficiency over local geography and existing land tenure, contributing to Indigenous dispossession, ecological distortion, and survey inaccuracies whose effects persist in modern land records. The original field notes and survey plats produced …

Review Of Two Books: Sunset Colonies: A Visual Elegy To South Florida's Mobile Home Communities And Dry Tortugas: Stronghold Of Nature, Michelle Sonnenberg

Florida Geographer

A multitude of Floridas exist in the collective, cultural imagination. Our relationships with each are complex and varied. From hikers wading waist deep with gators in the Fakahatchee Strand to suburban yards dotted with plastic pink flamingos, the people of Florida possess myriad, ever-evolving relationships to place. Nowhere is this more apparent than in South Florida, where high rises tower above Biscayne Bay and the Wall Street of the South while the land sinks below the weight of climate change and king tides. Imagine the multicultural tango that is the Magic City juxtaposed with the outflow of the River of …

My Favorite Florida Place: The Giant Ground Sloth Of Clam Bayou, Amanda Hagood Jan 2025

My Favorite Florida Place: The Giant Ground Sloth Of Clam Bayou, Amanda Hagood

Florida Geographer

I first heard about the Clam Bayou Giant Ground Sloth from a local fisherman in Gulfport, FL. It was a warm spring day, and I had taken my infant son for a stroll through Clam Bayou Nature Park, a quiet spot on the eastern fringe of our little Gulf Coast town. While we paused to watch this seasoned angler cleaning his catch, he spun out three or four tales, every now and then tossing a spare fishy bit to the herons assembled eagerly around the DO NOT FEED WILDLIFE sign. Each yarn was gnarlier than the last, but the story …

The Effect Of Inclusive Leadership By Pastoral Leaders On Catholic Parish Vitality, Matthew F. Manion Jan 2025

The Effect Of Inclusive Leadership By Pastoral Leaders On Catholic Parish Vitality, Matthew F. Manion

Dissertations

Catholic parish life in the United States has passed the point of decline where minor changes will enable it to grow again. Church leaders need a new missionary culture and outward-focused approaches to reach people today with the timeless truths of the faith. The old mindset of putting all the responsibility on the shoulders of the clergy to solve problems no longer works. Since heterogeneous groups make better decisions than homogeneous groups in complex, adaptive situations, this study explores the hypothesis that inclusive leadership by Catholic parish leaders leads to more innovation and better solutions to the challenges of church …

The Motives For Mergers And Acquisitions And Their Implications For Research And Practice, Kris Irwin, Craig Armstrong, Paul Drnevich, Mario Schijven Jan 2025

The Motives For Mergers And Acquisitions And Their Implications For Research And Practice, Kris Irwin, Craig Armstrong, Paul Drnevich, Mario Schijven

Management Faculty Publications

Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) have long intrigued scholars given their size, complexity, and frequent failure. Despite an extensive body of research on M&A, a key limitation in M&A research is the lack of focus on the motives underpinning acquisitions, which may explain frequent mixed and inconclusive results. Much of the existing literature struggles to fully capture the complex and multifaceted nature of these motives, limiting the ability to draw consistent conclusions. In this paper, we review academic and practical perspectives on M&A motives, highlighting both discrepancies and methodological challenges. Our key contributions include a comparison of theoretical and practical insights, …

Diversification Of Avifauna In The Darién Highland Region: Ecological Niche Modeling, Phylogeography And Morphology To Explore Speciation In The Montane Species Myadestes Coloratus, Chlorospingus Tacarcunae And Margarornis Bellulus., Jorge L. Garzon Vasquez Mrs Jan 2025

Garzon Vasquez Mrs

Theses and Dissertations

Montane regions in the Neotropics are hotspots of endemism and biodiversity, yet their species are especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and geographic isolation. This thesis investigates the evolutionary and ecological dynamics of three bird species endemic to the Darién Highlands of eastern Panama: Myadestes coloratus, Chlorospingus tacarcunae, and Margarornis bellulus. Through an integrative approach combining ecological niche modeling, morphometric analysis, and genomic data from ultraconserved elements (UCEs) and mitochondrial DNA, the study explores the historical biogeography, current distribution patterns, population structure, and phenotypic differentiation of these montane taxa. Ecological niche models revealed that suitable habitat …

Functional Analysis Of Ligand Binding Domain 2 Of Outer Surface Protein C Of Borreliella Burgdorferi, Gavin Z. Chambers Jan 2025

Functional Analysis Of Ligand Binding Domain 2 Of Outer Surface Protein C Of Borreliella Burgdorferi, Gavin Z. Chambers

Theses and Dissertations

Lyme disease, caused by the spirochete Borreliella burgdorferi, is the most common vector-borne infection in North America. A critical determinant of early mammalian infection is outer surface protein C (OspC), a highly variable lipoprotein that is indispensable for spirochete survival but whose precise function remains unresolved. OspC has been proposed to mediate diverse roles, including complement evasion, adhesion, tissue dissemination, and antiphagocytic activity, supporting the view that it is a multifunctional virulence factor. Structural studies have identified two putative ligand-binding domains (LBD1 and LBD2), with LBD2 forming a solvent-exposed crown at the membrane-distal end of the OspC dimer.

Evaluating Spatiotemporal Vegetation Index Variation To Detect Salt Marsh Dieback On The Georgia Coast, Emmanuella Bosompemaa Obeng Jan 2025

Evaluating Spatiotemporal Vegetation Index Variation To Detect Salt Marsh Dieback On The Georgia Coast, Emmanuella Bosompemaa Obeng

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Salt marshes, essential for coastal protection and carbon sequestration, are increasingly vulnerable to dieback events, threatening ecosystem resilience and vital services. Detecting these shifts early is essential for timely intervention. However, few studies have applied Early Warning Signals (EWS) to coastal marsh systems. Most EWS research has focused on lakes, forests, or climate tipping points, with limited application to salt marsh dieback in the southeastern U.S. Site-specific, long-term spatial analyses are also lacking, as prior work often examines short time frames or single disturbance events. This study investigates the spatiotemporal patterns of salt marsh dieback on the Georgia coast from …

Design And Fabrication Of An Integrated Solar Still And Uv/Pasteurization System For Domestic Use, Majid H. Ali, D A. Al-Saadi, V V. Ostrikov

Babylonian Journal of Mechanical Engineering

Water, that miraculous liquid, is the fundamental foundation upon which life on Earth is based. The first human civilizations were founded on water, and wherever water is found, civilization is found. Given the increasing population, rising living standards, and developments that have led to increased water pollution and limited water resources, and given the expected rise in fuel and electricity prices in the future, and to rationalize electricity consumption, the use of solar energy is an effective solution for desalination and sterilization of water. In this research, a solar-powered desalination and sterilization system was designed and manufactured to make water potable. …

The Authenticity Trap: Political Deepfakes And The Limits Of Current Regulation, Akriti Gaur Jan 2025

The Authenticity Trap: Political Deepfakes And The Limits Of Current Regulation, Akriti Gaur

National Law School of India Review

This paper examines the emerging regulatory challenge posed by political deepfakes, with a particular focus on India’s 2024 elections and the legal responses that followed. It argues that regulatory responses that directly prohibit or remove political speech risk collapsing questions of authenticity into questions of legality. Using India as the central case study, and drawing comparative lessons from recent developments in the United States, the paper argues for a regulatory approach focused less on banning synthetic political content and more on provenance, disclosures, and institutional preparedness. Deepfake regulation, if poorly designed, risks strengthening state control over political discourse. The paper …

Gamification And Geography Education: A Survey And Typology Of Games, Ruth Ohaka Jan 2025

Gamification And Geography Education: A Survey And Typology Of Games, Ruth Ohaka

Graduate Research Papers

Gamification in education transforms traditional, non-gaming contexts (i.e., classrooms) by incorporating challenges and scenarios with their own rules, stories, and stakes. In geography education, teachers have sought ways to gamify the classroom, develop students’ spatial reasoning, and develop place-based capabilities for critical thinking and problem-solving, making complex geographical and environmental concepts more relatable and accessible to the students. Regardless of the documented achievements with gamification, such as more engagement, deeper understanding, and increased motivation, there remains a lack of a comprehensive typology of games used within geography education. This paper aims to develop a typology of games used in education …

Media Studies - All Scholarship

This study develops a Critical Environmental Communication (CEC) framework to assess the landscape of Environmental Communication research and to what extent and in which ways critical and justice-oriented perspectives are included. The CEC framework consists of four interconnected themes: (a) Marginalized Ecocultural Identities, (b) Context and Scale, (c) Power and Agency, and (d) Justice, Equity, Diversity, Access, and Inclusion (JEDAI). Using this framework in a bibliometric analysis examining 1,297 Environmental Communication publications, we assess the occurrence of these themes in the scholarship. Our analysis found that Marginalized Ecocultural Identities, and Context and Scale were most frequently occurring, while Power and …
