"It's A Different Kind Of Grit": The Lived Experiences Of Identity And Sense Of Belonging For Rural College-Going Students, Kim D. Jackson
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
This qualitative study examines the relationship between identity and sense of belonging in college for students from rural parts of Pennsylvania. Rural students can struggle with identity and belonging in college and need support from student services. I used the theories of belonging and intersectionality as the theoretical frameworks for the study. Participants are from four high schools in rural Pennsylvania and are participants in a community-based organization and scholarship program. Nine participants were used for the study. Participants completed a brief questionnaire and a 1-2 hour in depth individual interview. The questionnaire items collected demographic information on participants to …

Playing Hardball With Soft Money: A Qualitative Analysis Of K-12 Administrators' Experiences In The Esser Era, Mairead K. Barrett
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
This interpretive qualitative study aimed to understand K-12 administrators' experiences with the Elementary and Secondary Schools Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER) during its funding period and fiscal cliff. The study was guided by one research question: What were the perceptions and experiences of K-12 administrators during the ESSER funding window and its subsequent fiscal cliff? The study employed surveys and semi-structured interviews for data collection. Eight building administrators completed the survey, and nine district administrators were surveyed. The results of the building administrators were inconclusive in finding clear themes. The data collected from district administrators representing seven districts uncovered the following …
Reducing Unnecessary Antibiotics For The Treatment Of Urinary Tract Infections, Megan A. Carullo
Reducing Unnecessary Antibiotics For The Treatment Of Urinary Tract Infections, Megan A. Carullo
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common infections in women and are often a reason for prescribing antibiotics. Appropriately treating these infections is vital to prevent significant health concerns such as pyelonephritis or sepsis. Providers commonly prescribe antibiotics as a preventive measure, but incorrect usage can lead to unnecessary use of antibiotics. This is a large concern for the medical community, given the increased rates of antibiotic resistance. This quality improvement project aimed to answer the following research question: In women with recurrent UTIs (rUTIs), does presumptive treatment compared to standard treatment upon confirmed infection increase the number …

Military Forensic Archaeology: The Process And Recovery Of U.S. Missing-In-Action (Mia) Service Personnel, William Belcher, Luann Wandsnider, Ella N. Axelrod, Finn Kennison, Alicia Lawson
Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications
The United States (U.S.) Department of Defense's (DoD) Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) is the largest skeletal identification laboratory in the world and receives several hundred cases per year for identification related to Missing-in- Action (MIA) U.S. service members. While there are various sources for these accessions, by far the largest source is through unilateral or bilateral (done in cooperation with another governmental entity or nongovernmental organization) as well as public-private partnership excavations. While the DPAA-style military forensic archaeology follows archaeological principles and recording standards, the work is goal-oriented, evidence/trace-driven, and time-constrained— a common occurrence with cultural resource management sites …
Including Black Farmers, Excluding Pests: Perspectives On Participation In The Cooperative Extension Service, Briana Bazile
Including Black Farmers, Excluding Pests: Perspectives On Participation In The Cooperative Extension Service, Briana Bazile
Theses and Dissertations--Entomology
In recent years, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has faced renewed scrutiny for documented discrimination against Black farmers, yet far less attention has focused on its century-old partner in public service delivery, the Cooperative Extension Service (CES). This gap is especially notable considering 1) federal parity mandates extant since 1972 in response to significant disparities between Black and White constituents and staff,2) public commitments to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion in 2020 and, 3) the contributions of Black leaders at the origins of CES, at Tuskegee University in the late nineteenth century. Using the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service (KYCES) as a …

Unveiling The Bacterial Communities Of Aphaenogaster: Taxonomic Composition, Developmental And Species Influences, And The Impact Of Climate Change, Lily Kelleher
West Chester University Master’s Theses
Ants are vital keystone species in many ecosystems because they provide ecosystem services such as: seed dispersal, soil bioturbation, and pest control. However, ant bacterial symbioses remain largely unstudied, but these interactions are crucial because microbes play a vital role in the ants’ overall health. Today, global climate change is impacting our biodiversity, and we can use information about how changing temperatures impact the symbiotic bacterial communities associated with ants to predict future impact. Aphaenogaster rudis and A. fulva remain understudied in terms of their bacterial community and are important North American species. For this study, ants from several colonies …

Madawaska Ballots: Ralph Owen Brewster's Contested Elections In The St. John Valley, Tyler Wolanin
Madawaska Ballots: Ralph Owen Brewster's Contested Elections In The St. John Valley, Tyler Wolanin
Original Research
When Ralph Owen Brewster was narrowly defeated in the 1924 Republican gubernatorial primary (initially) and 1932 congressional election, he attempted to have votes from the towns and plantations on the St. John River thrown out on various pretexts. Brewster, a populist who had opposed power company interests as governor, alleged in 1932 that these interests had conspired to defeat him by arranging illegitimate votes in the Francophone border region. Investigation of voting trends, however, shows that the vote against Brewster was likely the result of more routine political partisanship, as well as a rejection of his Ku Klux Klan support …

A Vascular Flora Of Ladd Canyon, Santa Ana Mountains, Orange And Riverside Counties, California, Daniel P. Donovan, Amanda E. Fisher
Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany
The Santa Ana Mountains are a coastal range on the border of Orange and Riverside counties in southern California. Ladd Canyon, covering 18.2 km2 in the Cleveland National Forest, is a botanical black hole relative to the rest of the Santa Ana Mountains because of limited access. It is dominated by chaparral and coastal sage scrub and includes significant knobcone pine (Pinus attenuata) stands and riparian woodland. Features that make it an intriguing area to study include the only serpentine soil in the Santa Ana Mountains, large tracts of habitat that have no recorded fire history, steep …
The Silicon Valley No-Poach Conspiracy, Eric A. Posner, Ruth Zheng
The Silicon Valley No-Poach Conspiracy, Eric A. Posner, Ruth Zheng
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
The Silicon Valley no-poach conspiracy is the most important cartel no one has heard of. It is rarely discussed in the cartel literature and is lost to public memory. More than forty tech firms, including Apple and Google, agreed not to poach employees from one another over three decades, causing an estimated $3.1 billion in lost wages. The Justice Department discovered and broke apart the cartel in 2010, but did not punish the cartel members, who quickly settled with employees and never admitted guilt. However, the case foreshadowed, and perhaps helped spur, two major developments in antitrust law a decade …

Sacrosanct Or Sacred: Creating A Theological Framework To Undergird Church Design, Aaron Farmer
Doctor of Ministry Projects and Theses
This paper aims to ascertain whether a Theology of Architecture—a theological framework for planning and constructing church buildings—can be identified within the Biblical narrative or through the historical practices of ecclesial design. The research begins with an examination of the biblical architecture of the Old Testament, primarily described in narratives rather than corroborated by archaeological evidence. A review of historical periods of ecclesial design follows, aiming to identify phases where ecclesial design exhibited patterns analogous to those found in the Old Testament. The study uncovers a consistent pattern in both testaments wherein architecture represents divine work within specific timeframes and …

Beyond Interdisciplinarity: How Rosine 2.0 Created Social Structures Of Community Care, Jordan Landes, Katie L. Price, Vivian Truong
Library Staff Works
How might we learn from history in ways that help us imagine a better future? And what role might academic institutions play in making those futures imaginable? These questions informed Rosine Association 2.0, a socially engaged art project out of Swarthmore College active from 2021 to 2023. Inspired by a nineteenth-century social project in Philadelphia, Rosine 2.0 formed an interdisciplinary collective of artists, harm reduction organizers, archivists, and activists to co-imagine how harm reduction and mutual aid reduce stigma and increase community care in Philadelphia. We believe that Rosine 2.0 exemplifies the possibilities of public humanities projects that are …

Designing A Catholic School In The Twenty-First Century, Emmanuel I. Ugwejeh S.J.
Journal of Catholic Education
Data show an increasing number of Catholic schools from elementary to tertiary levels in developing countries, especially countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. These new Catholic schools seem to follow the industrial-era school design trajectories. However, the exigencies of the 21st century require a paradigm shift, ensuring that Catholic schools move away from the industrial method of education that did not attend to the specific educational needs of the student to a kind of education that further enriches the holistic education offered by the Catholic school. This enrichment includes architectural designs that support Catholic educational ideals and practices that preserve the earth. …

Multiple, convergent risk factors place Latina youth at disproportionate risk for mental
and sexual health issues. Yet, their firsthand perspectives and experiential knowledge of
how to navigate mental and sexual health challenges is rarely the subject of scholarly
inquiry. This article presents a multi-modal content analysis of themes and messages
conveyed by two digital zines created by Latina young adults for Latina teens through an
arts-based research project. In this arts-based research, zines functioned as both data and
method, capturing Latina youth’s nuanced perspectives and lived experiences of mental
and sexual health. We identified six themes in their works—acknowledging and …

Landslide Susceptibility Mapping Via Dempster-Shafer, Statistical Index, And Certainty Factor Models In Gis And Their Comparison At Pidie Recency In Aceh, Indonesia, Septianto Aldiansyah, Amniar Ati, Fitriyani Saudi
Applied Environmental Research
Landslides are natural disasters that are active if there is an interaction of environmental factors that are considered to control them, especially in mountainous areas. This study developed a landslide susceptibility map in Pidie Regency via the Dempster-Shafer (DS), statistical index (SI), and certainty factor (CF) models. A total of 957 landslide events were mapped, 70% of which were used for modeling, whereas the remaining events were used to validate the model output. Fourteen layers of conditioning factors were used: elevation, slope, aspect, curvature, TWI, SPI, STI, NDVI, rainfall, distance from river, distance from road, distance from fault, LULC, and …

Applied Environmental Research
Landslide susceptibility is a significant concern in Elgon County, Uganda, particularly during the rainy season. This vulnerability is attributable to several factors, including steep slopes, fertile soils, and dense settlements on volcanic ridges. Landslide susceptibility maps are important in mitigating the risk particularly at the local level. The objectives of this study were 1) to model landslide susceptibility via an interpretable machine-learning model, 2) to identify the most influential factors for landslide susceptibility in the study area, and 3) to assess the exposure of settlements to landslide risk. This study employed the XGBoost model trained on nine conditioning factors via …
Examining Short Term Drainage Impacts To Soil Health In Hydric And Non-Hydric Soils Of Waseca County, Minnesota, Ely Hartl
