Saving Tomorrow: The Triumphs And Tribulations Of Innovational Behavioral, Social-Emotional, Or Mental Health Support In A Rural Public School, Andrea Powell
Dissertations and Theses
Although some research has established the use of diffusion of innovation in technical fields, few studies show its utilization in public schools. This qualitative case study aimed to understand the trials and tribulations associated with implementing behavioral, social-emotional, or mental health support in a rural K–12th public school. Further, this study sought to understand how innovation diffuses throughout public school districts. Specifically, this qualitative study analyzed the perception of innovation through survey data collected from teachers and administrators in a rural K–12th grade public school district. When implementing behavioral, social-emotional, or mental health supports in a rural school, five themes …

Where’D You Go, Ohio: Progressive Ohio Ballot Initiative Passage In A Republican Aligned State, Colin D. Swearingen, Elizabeth A. Stiles, Barrett Scheatzle*
2025 Faculty Bibliography
Over the span of just three months, Ohio voters went to the polls to weigh in on three issues concerning the threshold needed to amend the state constitution, abortion, and marijuana. Despite being a Republican-leaning state – per an author’s calculations, its Cook’s Partisan Voter Index is R+6 – the more progressive position won all three votes handily. In August, the coalition supporting the status quo of requiring a simple majority to change the state constitution, a longheld progressive position, won 57.1% of the vote (“The New York Times,” 2023a). In November, voters approved a constitutional amendment to give individuals …

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs: Chapters
Honors leaders should consider faculty development partnerships as outlets for not only communicating instructional opportunities to a wider audience but also broadening teaching opportunities for faculty in departments that are not always represented and for faculty in non-tenure-track as well as tenure-track lines. An ongoing partnership with a faculty development group can also help honors leaders stay aware of teaching with new technologies, manage emergent trends in the classroom such as the use of artificial intelligence, contribute to the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and provide an outlet for reflection about honors instruction. The CTE-Honors partnership at the University of …

In 1765, enslaved Africans boarded the Roi Guinguin in Badagry as part of a restitution agreement between a Nantesian slave trading company and an African ruler. These captive Africans endured treacherous journeys from West Africa’s interior to Badagry, then Príncipe, then toward Saint Domingue before being rerouted to Cayenne in Guyane (French Guiana), and then the Îles du Salut for a smallpox quarantine. The captain of the Roi Guinguin and French imperial officials’ fears of smallpox outbreaks and other contagious diseases prompted them to halt and reroute the voyage to refreshment centers and quarantines along the West African and South …

Arenas Of Resistance: How Oklahoma's Black Rodeos Preserved Environmental Wisdom And Community Power, Rorie Johnson
Scripps Senior Theses
This thesis explores how Black rodeos in Oklahoma emerged from post-emancipation agricultural labor and ranching traditions, serving as powerful sites of cultural preservation, knowledge transmission, and resistance to dominant narratives of the American West. Through analysis of historical records, photographic evidence, and personal family narratives, this research demonstrates how Black Oklahomans developed unique relationships with land and animals that encompassed both the "ecological burden" of agricultural labor and the "beauty" of cultural expression and community-building. Drawing on theoretical frameworks including Kimberly Ruffin's "ecological burden-and-beauty paradox," George Lipsitz's "Black spatial imaginaries," bell hooks' "oppositional gaze," and Toni Morrison's concept of "rememory," …
Random Graph Models For Dual Graphs, Anne Friedman
Random Graph Models For Dual Graphs, Anne Friedman
Scripps Senior Theses
This paper aims to better characterize dual graphs derived from state districting maps by developing random graph models that replicate their structural properties. Dual graphs provide a simplified way to represent districting maps, making it computationally feasible to analyze their structure. These representations enable researchers, legislators, and courts to assess district compactness, detect signs of gerrymandering, and generate alternative districting plans. A deeper understanding of the structural patterns of these dual graphs can help researchers choose or design more effective algorithms for redistricting analysis. The random graph models developed in this study serve as testbeds for evaluating algorithmic approaches to …

From Fort To Prison: The Production Of Iloilo City, Ram Paulo A. Anayan
Filipino Faculty Publications
The foundation of colonial cities in the Philippines rests on violence. The Spanish policies of the reducción forced the natives to settle in pueblos where colonial power is ensured. The resistance of some natives brought about the divide between tagabayan (town dweller) and tagabundok (mountain dweller)—respective connotations of civilization and savagery (Lumbera and Lumbera, 36). This paper examines how this centripetal-centrifugal force of simultaneous identity-production and displacement is echoed in the metonymy of the fort on which the origins of Iloilo City stand. I navigate how this movement manifests in the consciousness of the city across historical periods represented by …

This thesis examined the lived experiences of breast cancer through the lens of survivability. Drawing on the embodied, spatial, temporal, emotional-affective experiences of women after the end of breast cancer treatment, this thesis unpacks the geographies present within the everyday life of living with, through and on from breast cancer. This thesis also examined how women living with breast cancer engaged with different forms of breast cancer related tattoos to understand and negotiate with their lived experiences. It also examined the different spaces and relations of care present within the practice of breast cancer related tattooing. Methodology wise, this research …
Novel Insights Into The Palaeomagnetism Of Serpentinized Peridotites From The Troodos And Oman Ophiolites, James Hepworth
Novel Insights Into The Palaeomagnetism Of Serpentinized Peridotites From The Troodos And Oman Ophiolites, James Hepworth
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Large volumes of mantle peridotite are exposed at the Earth’s surface in ophiolites, becoming vulnerable to the concurrent chemical alteration processes of serpentinization and carbonation. Serpentinization frequently results in the production of secondary magnetite that can record the direction of the Earth’s magnetic field at the time of its formation, allowing palaeomagnetism to be used as a tool to investigate this process. Many ophiolites also experienced large-scale tectonic rotations during their evolution. In some cases, the timing of these rotations is well-documented palaeomagnetically, potentially allowing the timing of different phases of serpentinization to be constrained if the magnetization directions of …
An Investigation Of The Biogeochemical Exchange Of The Macro Plant Nutrients Phosphorus And Nitrogen On Rewetted Peat Soil On The Somerset Levels And Moors., Natasha Underwood
An Investigation Of The Biogeochemical Exchange Of The Macro Plant Nutrients Phosphorus And Nitrogen On Rewetted Peat Soil On The Somerset Levels And Moors., Natasha Underwood
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Phosphorus, an essential nutrient for life, excess phosphorus is a common ecological concern in watercourses worldwide leading to eutrophication and pollution of natural water systems. In the UK, eutrophication of freshwater systems is one of the most common cause of water bodies not achieving good ecological status by the Environment Agency. The Somerset Levels and Moors (SLMs) condition status is described, by Natural England and the Environmental Agency, as ‘unfavourable declining’ due to the phosphate levels being up to three times higher than the Common Standards Monitoring Guidance targets of 0.1 mg/l total phosphate. Housing development on the SLMs has …
Glaciers As A Secondary Source Of Anthropogenic Contaminants: An Emerging Socio-Environmental Challenge, Dylan Beard
Glaciers As A Secondary Source Of Anthropogenic Contaminants: An Emerging Socio-Environmental Challenge, Dylan Beard
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Glaciers provide vital ecosystem services, including water resources, habitat provision, and food and energy security. Once considered pristine, glaciers are now known to accumulate various contaminants, including fallout radionuclides (FRNs) and potentially toxic elements (PTEs), which can pose risks to downstream communities when released through meltwater. This thesis examines the accumulation and potential release of contaminants from glacial environments, with a focus on cryoconite, a contaminant-rich material found on glacier surfaces.Primary data collection and laboratory analyses were conducted on cryoconite samples from the High Arctic and the Peruvian Andes to assess spatial variability in contaminant levels and chemical availability. Additionally, …
Evaluating Sediment Storage Time For Improved Management Of River Basin Pollution, Enrique Munoz Arcos
Evaluating Sediment Storage Time For Improved Management Of River Basin Pollution, Enrique Munoz Arcos
School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses
Excess fine sediment supply and associated contaminants can have detrimental effects on water quality and river ecology, with sediment deposition on, and subsequent infiltration into, streambed substrate impacting riverine habitats. Significant research has assessed the magnitude, controls, and impacts of fine sediment in river channels. Assessment of the associated time scales, however, across these three domains has received less attention due in part to the complexity of river basin sediment dynamics. Fallout radionuclides (FRNs) applied as particle tracers in aquatic ecosystems can address this challenge. Herein, this research aimed to evaluate sediment storage time through application and development of FRN …
