Decolonial Constitutionalism, Richard Albert
Decolonial Constitutionalism, Richard Albert
Chicago Journal of International Law
The American Declaration of Independence kindled the first successful decolonial movement in the modern world, culminating in the enactment of the United States Constitution. From colony to sovereign state to great power, the United States modeled for subordinated peoples abroad how to win their own battles for sovereignty. Since the end of the Second World War, however, America’s eighteenth-century precedent of revolutionary self-determination is no longer the prevailing path to decolonization. The traditional warmaking toolkit for winning independence—revolution, illegality, and violence—has been replaced by more orderly tactics consonant with the rule of law. Evolution, lawfulness, and continuity are the touchstones …
Cyberbullying As A Contemporary Human Rights Violation Of Youth In Digital Media: A Study Of India, Brazil, And South Africa, Laura Ferla Tuma
Cyberbullying As A Contemporary Human Rights Violation Of Youth In Digital Media: A Study Of India, Brazil, And South Africa, Laura Ferla Tuma
American University International Law Review
The COVID-19 pandemic facilitated a technological migration not only among adults but also among children and adolescents. Digital media became the alternative for young individuals to maintain their activities, especially school-related ones. They shared virtual classrooms, used the internet for entertainment, and were forced to socialize exclusively in digital environments for months. Connected time increased, and the world witnessed a new phenomenon: hyperconnectivity.

This literature review and application thesis examines the concerns related to nature-deficit, specifically screen usage, student disengagement, and mental health issues. This review examines how nature-based educational approaches can enhance mental health, improve academic performance, and connect to various topics, including Indigenous culture and interdisciplinary art approaches that integrate multiple subjects. The lesson plans provided in the application are rooted in culturally relevant, nature-based approaches for students in grades K-12, including an Indigenous-inspired lesson for elementary, middle, and high school art.

Let’S Nms With Texas: The Implications Of The Texas Stock Exchange For Self-Regulation, Onnig H. Dombalagian
Let’S Nms With Texas: The Implications Of The Texas Stock Exchange For Self-Regulation, Onnig H. Dombalagian
The University of Chicago Business Law Review
The Texas Stock Exchange’s registration as a new national securities exchange is arguably the most formidable challenge to the NYSE and Nasdaq duopoly in recent memory. TXSE has raised expectations not only among those who champion the rise of Texas as a financial center and resist the imposition of progressive norms through securities law, but also among scholars who favor competition as a solution to structural problems in the national market system (NMS) for equity trading. This Article explores the extent to which a new exchange can manage these expectations. It further considers what it means to be a “fully …

Investigating The Role Of Data Analytics In News Production And Distribution: A Case Of Nation Media Group, Uganda, Clare Muhindo
Executive Masters in Media Leadership and Innovation
This study investigates the role of data analytics in news production and distribution in Uganda, using a case study of Nation Media Group, Uganda (NMG-U). The study is framed within the context of the gatekeeping theory, particularly the participatory gatekeeping model, which focuses on the creation of processes, or newsroom routines and norms, that are developed as a direct result of audience input interpreted through audience data. The research had three objectives: (1) to examine how data analytics are integrated into editorial workflows at NMG Uganda. (2) to explore how data analytics shape editorial priorities and (3) to identify strategies …

An Evaluation Of Promotional Tools: Trends And Practices, Eve M. Umberger
An Evaluation Of Promotional Tools: Trends And Practices, Eve M. Umberger
Honors Projects
It is generally acknowledged that marketers achieve promotion objectives through the optimal use of Advertising, Sales Promotion, Direct Marketing, Personal Selling, the Internet, and Social Media. Nevertheless, there is a widespread misconception when it comes to comprehending what promotion entails. Moreover, the distinction between various promotional tools, including their individual merits and demerits, remains largely underappreciated. Thus, to address this knowledge gap, the current study employed secondary data along with qualitative interviews to examine the application and effectiveness of various promotional tools across different communication contexts. The findings present a rich analysis and description of specific promotional tools, including Advertising, …
Double Standards In The Drug Trade: How European Nations Escape Sanctions While Senegal May Bear The Burden, Erin Soro
American University International Law Review
The focus of international drug control policies on sanctioning transit countries like Senegal for drug trafficking overlooks the significant role played by drug-consuming nations such as France and Spain. Despite a notable decrease in local drug consumption due to democratic progress and strong religious roots, Senegal remains a major transit hub for narcotics destined for Europe. This Comment argues that drug-consuming countries are equally culpable under international law and should face comparable sanctions to effectively address the global drug trade. This Comment highlights the imbalance in sanction implementation and advocates for a more equitable approach, recommending minimal sanctions for Senegal …

Church Attendance, Gender Roles, And Human Sexuality, Derek D. Goodrich
2025 Fall Honors Capstones Projects - Archive
This research examines how the frequency of religious attendance impacts views on gender roles and sexuality in Christian subgroups in the United States. Prior research on the varying worldviews of American Christians has revealed a diverse group of opinions that cannot be explained solely by denominational affiliation. Based on social identity theory, this study explores whether the frequency of attendance at religious services influences congregants’ beliefs on six issues: legalization of gay marriage, the acceptance of homosexuality in society, the acceptance of transgender people, whether a parent should stay home with the children, which parent should stay home, and women …

Complexity Machines: New Histories Of North American Automobile Production, 1900-1950s, Kevin A. Moskowitz
History Dissertations - Archive
This dissertation examines the design and manufacture of the mass-produced automobile in North America from its inception at the start of the twentieth century through the height of production in the late 1950s. This network of producers constituted the single largest industry in North America. The success of this market required producing a product that was desirable to consumers in design, affordable to purchase, and could be built in high enough quantities to justify the realignment of the rest of North American society to serve this new method of transportation. This dissertation is a shift away from demand studies concerned …
Personality And Victimization: The Relationship Between The Big Five Personality Traits And Victimization In Adulthood, Cameron Kan
Criminology & Criminal Justice Theses - Archive
Myriad risk factors have been found to predict victimization. Research, however, has yet to examine the impact of personality—if any—in the likelihood of victimization in adulthood. The current study attempts to fill this gap in the literature by being the first to examine the effects of the Big Five personality traits, also known as the Five Factor Model, on adult victimization in a nationally representative sample (Add Health). Results reveal that scoring high in extraversion is related to a 12 percent increase the in rate of victimization controlling for a host of temperamental and criminological covariates. Depressive symptoms, criminal behavior, …
The Commuter Student Experience: Challenges And Impacts On Student Success, Seth A. Ressl
The Commuter Student Experience: Challenges And Impacts On Student Success, Seth A. Ressl
Educational Leadership & Policy Studies Dissertations - Archive
Commuter students at large public universities often face barriers to engaging in campus co-curricular activities, primarily due to off-campus commitments, which can affect their academic success and retention. Drawing on student engagement theory, this qualitative narrative study explores commuter students’ experiences with co-curricular involvement and its perceived impact on their academic performance, skill development, social connections, and persistence at a large public four-year university. Data collected through in-depth interviews with commuter undergraduates were analyzed to identify common themes regarding students' perspectives, challenges, and impact related to co-curricular activities. The findings suggest that active involvement in student organizations and campus events …

The Genesis Of Constitutions: A Natural Language Processing Approach, Tejas Ramdas, Patrick Chung-Chia Huang, Nuno Garoupa, Martin T. Wells, Yun-Chien Chang, Tom Ginsburg
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
The diffusion of constitutional ideas and models has been the subject of extensive scholarship. In this paper, we use natural language processing methods to examine the persistence of constitutional ideas and models, focusing on how 16 core and iconic constitutions influence 572 newer constitutions over a long period (1900–2020). Our findings indicate that “old” core constitutions (such as those of the U.S. of 1789, Spain of 1812, France of 1848, and to a lesser extent France of 1791) have maintained significant influence over those 121 years. Austria of 1920 and France of 1946 are the most influential among the 20th …
Abundance And Other Food Fixations, Margot J. Pollans
Abundance And Other Food Fixations, Margot J. Pollans
Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications
Although most people in the United States no longer devote the majority of their time to food production, processing, and distribution, food remains a daily fixation. This Article explores three driving food fixations--abundance, thinness, and health--and situates each against an inverse fear--scarcity, fatness, and illness, respectively. Mapping these threats onto U.S. food policy, this Article examines, among other policy arenas, food waste policy, nutrition and health claim labeling law, and food additive regulations. Across food policy, these fixations feed what this Article calls the “politics of abundance.” This politics helps to insulate the food industry from deeper systemic reform aimed …

The Unindexed Marginalia Of Historical American Cookery Books Digital Public History Project: Domestic Technical Communication Labor Contributions, Alessandra Zinicola Lopez
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This dissertation includes a traditional written portion, and a non-traditional digital humanities public history online digital archive project created through Omeka which showcases examples of hand-written recipes found within commercial cookbooks, called marginalia. The understanding of modern technical communication is affected by the perceived history of the field and currently, that history is biased toward non-domestic pursuits. The project explores what collecting, digitizing, and archiving examples of historical hand-written marginalia found within commercially printed American receipt books indicate about the presence, participatory nature, value, and contributions of domestic technical communications and their user-authors in the 19th century. The examples collected …
Everglades Restoration: Interdisciplinary Analysis And Pluralist Approaches, Sarah Swiersz
Everglades Restoration: Interdisciplinary Analysis And Pluralist Approaches, Sarah Swiersz
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This study uses interdisciplinary methods to analyze ecological restoration of the Florida Everglades (Everglades Restoration). Everglades Restoration is considered one of the largest ecosystem restoration projects in the world, relying on complex intergovernmental and sociopolitical relationships. Framing Everglades Restoration as a quintessential “wicked problem”, a problem that is inherently complex and unsolvable, provides grounds for interdisciplinary analysis. This study analyzes two epistemological approaches to Everglades Restoration: Western-scientific knowledge, the epistemological foundation of Everglades Restoration, and Indigenous Traditional Ecological Knowledge, which challenges the foundations of Everglades Restoration. Interdisciplinary analysis within a decolonial framework identifies limits to integration of knowledge, a core …
The Marginalization Of The Malgre Nous In French Society From Its Roots To The 1960s, Marie Oury
The Marginalization Of The Malgre Nous In French Society From Its Roots To The 1960s, Marie Oury
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
This thesis examines how young Alsatians found themselves on the margins of postwar France. The illegal annexation of their region by Germany in 1940 led them into a bitter paradox: within months, they had to support their enemy's war effort. The National Socialist (Nazi) regime's coercion reached its height between 1942 and 1945, when 130,000 young men and women from Alsace and Moselle were conscripted into the German army against their will. After the war, this generation bore the weight of that history, struggling to reintegrate into France, a nation that sought to avoid grappling with the complex experiences of …

Live Content: Turning Guests Into Co-Creators Of Gamified Attractions, Brittany Mcchesney
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Based on an in-depth exploratory literature review, this thesis proposes to assess how a live content team might interact with the lifecycle of a gamified theme park attraction. To offer unique and memorable experiences to Guests, there has been an increase in the development of theme park attractions that are “gamified,” in that Guests can interface with some interactive game element or experience. This is especially pertinent with the development of video-game-focused lands and attractions, such as Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Japan, Hollywood, and soon to be Epic Universe in Orlando, FL. Attractions can incorporate gamification in a …

Humanity In The Calamity: Hurricane Andrew, The Cold War, And The Demilitarization Of Fema, 1993 – 2002., Luis R. Rios Iii
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Humanity in the Calamity maps out the erroneous land practices that damned the American population to build in the state of Florida in a manner that does not fit the fluid landscape of the environment. Throughout history, as Americans built up Florida on the threatened coastline, the doctrines of disaster polities and emergency management were birthed under the influence of Civil Defense, induced by the militaristic agendas of the Cold War. The influence of Cold War-Era Civil Defense clouded the field of emergency management and FEMA, limiting the response to natural disasters making disasters more violent and deadly.

Artificial Intelligence And The Self-Represented Inventor, Brenda M. Simon
Artificial Intelligence And The Self-Represented Inventor, Brenda M. Simon
Faculty Scholarship
Lack of access to competent legal representation is pervasive throughout the justice system. Unfortunately, the patent system is no exception. Self-represented inventors are far less likely to obtain patents than those with legal representation. Increasing access to artificial intelligence (AI) can mitigate some of the disadvantages of self-representation, but the use of AI will also raise new challenges. To the extent that AI systems can help self-represented inventors, they can begin to address one of the underlying causes of the patent gap—lack of access to high quality legal services. Women and people of color hold fewer patents, in part, because …

Lone Stars Lessons, Amy F. Kimpel
Faculty Scholarship
This Article provides the first comprehensive empirical account of Operation Lone Star (OLS), Texas Governor Abbott’s immigration enforcement initiative at the southern border. Though OLS consists of several components, including border wall construction and the busing of migrants to “blue” states, the machinery of OLS is primarily designed to apprehend recent migrants and prosecute them for violations of Texas state criminal law. The most common OLS prosecutions are for misdemeanor criminal trespass after migrants are arrested on private ranch lands near the border. As many criminal justice reforms aim to shrink the scale and scope of the criminal legal system, …

The shrimp aquaculture industry faces challenges that hinder production, including pathogens and infections from bacteria-causing diseases. The present study aimed to examine the impact of dietary synthesized chitosan stabilized selenium nanoparticles (CSSeNPs) on the growth performance of gut microbiota and immuneassociated genes for shrimp L. vannamei aquaculture. The experiments were accomplished for 12 weeks in triplicate fiberglass circular tanks (200 L). A 300 shrimp post-larvae (PL) weighing an average of 0.14 ± 0.001 g was utilized. Four experimental groups were assigned to 12 tanks. Each tank contained 25 PL. Each group fed with one of the following diets: control (C), …
