The Impact Of Gender On Literacy Engagement, Perception, And Academic Practice In Grades 3–12, Dennis John Wickes Jr.
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
Gender disparities in literacy persist across the globe, shaping academic and career opportunities in profound ways. Despite advances in educational research and interventions, boys continue to trail their female counterparts in literacy from an early age, and this gap persists. The purpose of this study was to examine gender differences in students’ self-perception, academic practice in literacy-based tasks, and enjoyment of these activities. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was employed. Participants included students in Grades 3–12 from international sites in the United States, the Philippines, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone, recruited through convenience and purposive sampling based on site access and …

Operation Airlift Africa: American Education And The Development Of Future Leaders From British Colonies In East And Central Africa, David N. Gachigo
Theses and Dissertations
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, over 800 students from British East and Central Africa gained access to American education through Operation Airlift Africa (OAA), a visionary initiative led by Kenyan trade unionist and politician Tom Mboya. Funded by private American donors, including Senator John F. Kennedy, and supported by scholarships from U.S. institutions, the program enabled African students to attend high schools, colleges, and universities in North America, mostly in the United States. This dissertation explores the impact of OAA on educational access for colonial subjects and its role in shaping future African leadership. The study argues that …
Recognizing Speculative Literature: Conceiving Identity In The Archives Of Enslavement, Gabriella Greco
Recognizing Speculative Literature: Conceiving Identity In The Archives Of Enslavement, Gabriella Greco
Theses and Dissertations
One of the key problems of the archive of enslavement, borne out of the violent erasure of enslaved identities, is the struggle to reconstruct and honor those lost identities. Recognizing Speculative Literature: Conceiving Identity in the Archives of Enslavement investigates postcolonial archival processes and the resulting documents to identify a spectrum of speculative literary genres that can be used to supplement traumatic archival erasures, often of female voices and identities, to further understand the power dynamics. To clarify, I use the term ‘speculative literature’ here to refer to a mode of literature that relies on the few fragments that may …

Where Do The 4winds Blow?: Developing 4winds Map, A Geocritical Vgi Application, Andy Trinh
Theses & ETDs
Crowdsourced neogeography and Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) applications have become popular in the realm of data aggregation, crisis management, and public policy advocacy, but its use for narrative storymapping is only now steadily increasing. New College, which has always had a complicated history, is in a unique period for alumni to share the impact New College has had on their life with other generations of alumni. 4Winds Map provides a storymapping platform to share stories in an archival and accessible manner. Research regarding design practices of data-based VGI applications is readily available, but methodology considerations of community storymapping VGI applications …

Secondary Educators’ Perspectives About The Influence Of Artificial Intelligence As An Instructional Tool In Secondary Education, Frank Nuara
Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-
As Artificial Intelligence (AI) rapidly transforms various sectors of society, its implications for secondary education have become increasingly influential. This qualitative dissertation explores how educators in secondary education institutions on Long Island, New York, perceive the influence of Artificial Intelligence as an instructional tool. While Artificial Intelligence offers promise in enhancing lesson planning, differentiation, and teacher efficiency, as an instructional tool into the classroom. The influence of artificial intelligence as an instructional tool also raises significant questions related to student engagement, cognitive development, educational equity, and teacher preparedness. The purpose of this study was to examine these perceptions in order …

Intertwining Wisdom: The Fusion Of Indigenous Knowledge And Liberal Arts And Sciences Education Discourses At The Autonomous Intercultural Indigenous University In The Colombian Cauca, Paula Milena Suárez Sandoval
GHEA21 Publications
This research shows how the Autonomous Intercultural Indigenous University (UAIIN), the most important community-based indigenous higher education institution in Colombia, has developed an educational model that harmonizes indigenous traditional knowledge with contemporary Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) discourses of higher education. Through qualitative analysis, the study compares how these two approaches are reflected in discourses around the purpose of education, pedagogical methods, and the university’s curriculum. The findings highlight an educational model that reconciles the inclusion of indigenous epistemologies with the contemporary dynamics of higher education.

Forecasting State-Level Construction Labor Earnings For Enhanced Project Cost Control: An Econometric And Deep-Learning Analysis Of The Leading Economic Indicators, Ahmed Shiha, Islam H. El-Adaway
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
As a major input to several work packages, the labor element constitutes a critical component for successful performance of construction projects. Localized labor shortages, fundamental changes in prevailing wage laws, and historical shifts in the unionization rates of construction workers impair the adequate estimation of construction labor costs in diverse labor market dynamics. Meanwhile, existing studies have utilized national-level indicators to study the trends of construction labor costs, but the relationship between the multifaceted local economic factors and state-level construction labor costs remains understudied. This paper fills such a knowledge gap. A three-stage methodology is adopted: (1) data collection of …

Ecological restoration is essential for improving the ecological integrity of degraded ecosystems to enhance ecosystem services and biodiversity. In this study, we assessed the effectiveness of wetland restoration on retired cranberry farms by analyzing vegetation recovery and surface-water dynamics using the enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and normalized difference water index (NDWI) derived from Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. To quantify temporal dynamics of both vegetation recovery and surface-water cover, we identified the spectral distinctions among restored wetland plant communities. Our results indicated the emergence of distinct plant communities upon restoration. Restored wetlands in general showed significant and progressive vegetation recovery and expanding …

Landslide At River's Edge: Alum Bluff, Apalachicola River, Florida, Joann Mossa, Yin-Hsuen Chen
Center for Geospatial Science, Education & Analytics Faculty Publications
When rivers impinge on the steep bluffs of valley walls, dynamic changes stem from a combination of fluvial and mass wasting processes. This study identifies the geomorphic changes, drivers, and timing of a landslide adjacent to the Apalachicola River at Alum Bluff, the tallest natural geological exposure in Florida at similar to 40 m, comprising horizontal sediments of mixed lithology. We used hydrographic surveys from 1960 and 2010, two sets of LiDAR from 2007 and 2018, historical aerial, drone, and ground photography, and satellite imagery to interpret changes at this bluff and river bottom. Evidence of slope failure includes a …

Unlocking Organizational Potential For Gis Collaboration In Higher Education, Charidy Paige
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Hardware, performance, and complex interface issues are just a few barriers that Geographic Information Systems (GIS) instructors must overcome when collaborative efforts extend beyond their classrooms. As GIS technologies evolve, instructors must adapt quickly to new tools and methods to maintain effective collaboration and ensure students achieve positive learning outcomes. Successful cooperation between departments, institutions, and other organizations requires preparation and sustainability throughout the semester to foster meaningful partnerships and support institutional goals. This dissertation applies the Resource Dependency Theory (RDT) to identify and define the challenges faced by GIS instructors, examining how they navigate these barriers by leveraging internal …

George William Castone: An Integrated Baseball Life At The Close Of The Nineteenth Century, Revised, Mark E. Eberle
Monographs
George William Castone was a Black baseball player during the 1880s and 1890s. He pitched for integrated town teams and minor league teams, as well as Black clubs, such as the Lincoln Giants in Nebraska and the Cuban Giants in the northeastern United States. Most of his time on the diamond was spent in Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska, but Castone also played on an otherwise white barnstorming team organized in Salt Lake City that traveled through Montana, Oregon, and California. He was among the few Black players on minor league teams in the Colorado State League in 1889 and the …
