Jazz And Politics: Was Ornette Coleman Inspired By The Civil Rights Movement?, Jason Dreher, Josiah Boornazian
Jazz And Politics: Was Ornette Coleman Inspired By The Civil Rights Movement?, Jason Dreher, Josiah Boornazian
The IASJ Journal of Applied Jazz Research
Due in part to increasing intellectual and political polarization in the United States in recent decades, there has been a resultant decrease in viewpoint diversity and an increase in instances of groupthink and widespread conceptual bias in the construction of many jazz history narratives. One example of these phenomena is the historiographical narratives linking free jazz and avant-garde jazz with the Civil Rights Movement in twentieth-century America. In the past several decades, the narrative that free jazz and/or avant-garde jazz was predominantly artistically inspired by the Civil Rights Movement has become broadly espoused by a wide variety of both scholarly …
Climate Conversations: An Intergenerational Artistic Exploration With Family, Julia A. Craven
Climate Conversations: An Intergenerational Artistic Exploration With Family, Julia A. Craven
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
This cross-generational study explores perceptions of climate change through interviews and visual art from three generations: the author, their grandparents, and their aunt. Guided by questions such as “Whose responsibility is it to address climate change?” and “How has climate change affected you?,” the interviews were used to create three art pieces that explore different aspects of climate change. The first art piece, titled “Eco-Anxiety,” visually represents the author's anxiety about climate change through the detangling of hair in their hands that "pull" at relevant climate news articles in the background. The second piece, “Beauty’s in the Eye of the …

Grass Weed Control And Rice Response With Tetflupyrolimet-Containing Programs, Mason C. Castner, Jason K. Norsworthy, Thomas R. Butts, Trenton L. Roberts, Nick R. Bateman, Travis R. Faske
Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
Tetflupyrolimet is the first herbicide with a novel site of action (SOA) labeled PRE and early POST for use in agronomic crops to be labeled in the last three decades. Direct-seeded paddy rice field experiments were conducted near Stuttgart, AR, on a silt loam soil and near Keiser, AR, on a clay soil to evaluate tetflupyrolimet-containing herbicide programs in comparison to commercial standards in conventional, imidazolinone-resistant, and quizalofop-resistant rice systems. Additionally, a furrow-irrigated rice experiment was conducted near Colt, AR, and Keiser to ensure weed control with clomazone and tetflupyrolimet mixtures compared to commercial standards. Twelve commonly planted rice cultivars …
Three Greek Inscriptions From The Monastery At Nahal Pehar (Giv‘Ot Bar), In The Northern Negev, Leah Di Segni
Three Greek Inscriptions From The Monastery At Nahal Pehar (Giv‘Ot Bar), In The Northern Negev, Leah Di Segni
'Atiqot
Three Greek inscriptions were discovered within a small coenobium at Giv‘ot Bar in the northern Negev. One was set in a mosaic pavement in the chapel, and the other two were painted in red ink on building blocks found in the debris near the entrance to the chapel. The mosaic inscription mentions a string of names, probably of the monks who cared for the laying of the mosaic pavement in the chapel, or perhaps for the foundation of the coenobium. The two other inscriptions are epitaphs, indicating that the chapel was also used for burial. One epitaph mentions a date …

Literatures Dreaming Of A Better World On Teaching 21st-Century Philippine Literatures, Edgar Calabia Samar
Literatures Dreaming Of A Better World On Teaching 21st-Century Philippine Literatures, Edgar Calabia Samar
Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia
This paper starts on the assumption that literature does not simply reflect reality— it shapes the conditions by which that reality can be reimagined. To teach twentyfirst- century Philippine literature is not to fix a canon or reinforce a curriculum, but to reframe possibility: in language, in form, in pedagogy, and in community. It proposes a method of engaging with the teaching of twenty-first-century Philippine literatures today: PAKI. The acronym stands for Pakikisangkot (Engagement), Ambisyon (Ambition), Kahusayan (Excellence), and Inmortalidad (Immortality). PAKI is also an affix that becomes a word meaning care, which in a classroom saturated with distraction, is …

Cmsi Translations #12: Strengthen Command Capabilities To Win Future Naval Battles, Wei Gong
CMSI Translations
Chairman Xi Jinping's emphasis on "strengthening command capabilities" has indicated the direction of effort and injected a powerful impetus for all-level commanders to fulfill their main responsibilities, meet challenges from adversaries, and win future naval battles. Observing the emerging patterns of new combat capabilities in new domains and reviewing the year's work to prepare for war, in the case of new combat platforms, commanders’ ability to strengthen their command capabilities is reflected in their dual responsibility for both the platform and the system. This includes the responsibilities to scientifically coordinate maneuver and firepower to address threats from individual ships and …

Regions Of Risk: A Geographical Introduction To Disasters By Kenneth Hewitt, Taly D. Drezner
Regions Of Risk: A Geographical Introduction To Disasters By Kenneth Hewitt, Taly D. Drezner
The Geographical Bulletin
Regions of Risk is a comprehensive text that painstakingly describes how disasters and the threat of disasters shape and geographically alter communities and regions all over the world. In his introduction, Hewitt writes, "Any given risk or disaster event is distinguished by its geographic location and setting. These are important keys to the origins of danger, the forms of damage and whom they most affect."

Exploring Geographic Information Systems By Nicholas Chrisman, Eric Matranga
The Geographical Bulletin
Rather than attempting to define the bounds and scope of geographic information, Chrisman provides an organizational framework that" . .. challenges the reader to participate in the exploration". Exploring Geographic Information Systems uses a nested set of interrelated issues to emphasize the need for users to think critically about the appropriate use of methods, tools, and data in GIS.
Physical Hydrology By S. Lawrence Ding-Man, Patricia J. Beyer
Physical Hydrology By S. Lawrence Ding-Man, Patricia J. Beyer
The Geographical Bulletin
As the public eye increasingly focuses on issues related to the use and quality of water, the science of hydrology expands from its position as an academic and engineering endeavor to one of prominance in people's everyday lives. With this expansion comes the need for education, not only for hydrologists and geomorphologists, but for biologists, botanists, earth scientists, climatologists, land managers, developers and policy makers. Water is a fascinating and complex substance: not only is water itself a resource, but it is also a main pathway for energy and chemical transfer in the Earth-atmosphere system.

Environmental Geography: Science, Land Use, And Earth Systems By William M.Marsh And John M. Grossa, Eric Matranga
The Geographical Bulletin
Environmental Geography is an introductory text for undergraduate instruction. Marsh and Grossa recognize a lack of geographic perspectives in such texts. They set as their task, building "on the traditional themes of geography". Concepts covered include environmental systems, principles of space, scale and distributions, and landscape as the result of human-environment interaction.

The Geographical Bulletin
Edward P. Hogan has done a considerable service for the people of South Dakota through writing The Geography of South Dakota, the first such volume in 78 years. It is a book that was long overdue, but such a project also needs the right person at the right place and the right time to author it.
The Heat/Humidity Quandary: A Case Study Of New England, Carl F. Ojala, William Babcock
The Heat/Humidity Quandary: A Case Study Of New England, Carl F. Ojala, William Babcock
The Geographical Bulletin
When the occasional heat wave occurs during summer, people often bemoan the unbearable temperature and humidity conditions. Most of us have heard, and maybe even used, the statement " 90°F. temperature and 90% relative humidity." This exceptional weather condition, based on popular confusion of the temperature/relative humidity concept, generally seems to be perceived as possible by most people. In this research, a 30- year archive approaching one million data sets for seven New England cities was examined to determine the validity of such an expression. Hourly summer temperature, dew point, and relative humidity data were analyzed. From 1961 to 1990 …

Europe is a continent characterized by great complexity both physically and culturally. It is a fascinating place steeped in history yet seemingly in a state of con - stant flux. The region provides a challenge to authors who endeavor to present a comprehensive view of Europe. This book targets students in introductory col - lege courses and focuses on contemporary Europe. Each chapter has a different author, writing style, approach, and struc - ture that reflects that author's area of in - terest and expertise. Chapters are in - cluded that are topically focused such as those on population and …

The Geographic Society And Gamma Theta Upsilon At Arizona State University, Malcolm L. Comeaux
The Geographical Bulletin
Throughout most of the history of Arizona State University (founded in 1885) there has been a strong student organization devoted to the study of geography and the state of Arizona . This organization was established early, and once established, it always existed. A club such as this one is particularly important to students, since belonging to a small group leads to comraderie and lifelong friendships, and it can be a valuable learning experience. One of the main goals of the geography student organization was always the taking offield trips, and such field trips are fondly remembered by ex-members. Prof. Fred …

Assessment Of The Growth, Nature, And Character Of Three Squatter Settlements In The Durban Functional Area, Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, Hari P. Garbharran
The Geographical Bulletin
This paper examines the growth, nature, and character of three informal settlement complexes in the Durban Functional Region (DFR) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Informal settlements or jondolas have become a permanent feature of the South African landscape since democracy. During the apartheid era (1948 to 1994) these structures were temporary, existed in the shadow of metropolitan areas, and faced removal. The post-apartheid period has been characterized by an upsurge in the development of informal settlements especially around metropolitan areas. Restrictions imposed upon certain segments of the population since colonial times have been crushed. In some instances, t hese unplanned settlements …
Third World Development And Population: A Reflection, Engdawork Desta
Third World Development And Population: A Reflection, Engdawork Desta
The Geographical Bulletin
In a world of plenty, many countries continue to suffer from lack of basic necessities. Development might be a controversial issue, however, the reason for Third World countries remain underdeveloped is certainly not because of absence of resources or lack of know-how. The relationship between development and population might also be direct but it is not necessarily negative all the time. If the potentials of science and technology are released, most of the constraints of economic sustainability would probably be overcome within a few years.

A Brief History Of The Delta Zeta Chapter At South Dakota State University Brookings, South Dakota, Donald J. Berg
The Geographical Bulletin
Delta Zeta Chapter at South Dakota State University in a direct sense grew out of the Alpha Rho Chapter at Saint Louis University in St. Louis, MO. There, Edward P. Hogan, who was a student at the time, had been active in the Chapter as its president. His wife, Joan M. Hogan, was also a member in the 1960s. Thethird person who would ultimately playa role in the formation of Delta Zeta was Lee A. Opheim, an instructor at Saint Louis University, who had joined the Mu Chapter at the University of Minnesota, Duluth in the 1950s.

Shanghai's Frontier: Pudong New Development Area, Hongyan Jia, Robert M. Ward
The Geographical Bulletin
The Pudong New Development Area (east of Shanghai) is one of the more recent special economic zones to emerge in the People's Republic of China. It is being built with the experience gained during earlier developments along the eastern coastal area of China. Much of the infrastructure has been put into place and improved. Preferential policies have been awarded to investors which have expanded on those given previously. Since then, the Pudong New Development Area has not only boosted the economic development of Shanghai and the Yangtze River valley, but has also played an important role in China's overall progress …

Projections And Perceptions Editorial Comment: The Limits Of Convergence; Nature, Nurture, And Growth, Jeffrey D. Sachs
The Geographical Bulletin
For the first time in history, almost all of the world's people are bound together in a global capitalist system. This momentous development forces us to think anew about the world economy. In the past, differences in policies across regions of the world resulted in vast differences in economic performance; in the future, policies are likely to be more similar. As a result, large parts of the developing world will narrow the income gap between themselves and richer nations. But this process of convergence, by itself, will go only so far. With or without markets, many developing countries will be …

"When I Was Young . .. "- Perceptions Of Past Winters By Elderly Residents Of Northwest Wisconsin, Michael J. Tronrud, D. E. Petzold
The Geographical Bulletin
Young people today often hear their eIders talk about the severe winters oftheir youth, noting colder, snowier times in the past. A survey of elderly residents of NW Wisconsin documents their perceptions of past winters. The results of this survey were then related to an nual and decade mean winter temperature and snowfal l data from the same region for the period, 1920 to 1996. It appears that memories of the most severe winter weather are connected with childhood. A majority of respondents chose the 1930s as being the coldest decade in memory. In reality, it was not. Only one …

The 1997-98 school year saw an increase in volunteering for GTU members. A new initiation criterion for members is to donate five hours for the semester at any of the many off campus sites that needed help. This is an activity sponsored through the Campus Volunteer Center and is a good way to offer community service. We hosted two successful canoe trips this year: the fall trip was on our own Evergreen Lake and the spring trip was on the Vermillion River. Our members, along with the Anthropology Club, continued to keep our ISU Nature Trail clean with regularly scheduled …
