School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

As ocean crust traverses away from spreading ridges, low-temperature hydrothermal minerals fill cracks to form veins, transforming the physical and chemical properties of ocean crust whilst also modifying the composition of seawater. Vein width and frequency observations compiled from the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) South Atlantic Transect (∼31°S) and previous scientific ocean drilling holes show that vein width distributions progressively broaden and observed strain (Σmveins/mcore) increases with crustal age, whereas vein densities (#veins/mcore) remain approximately constant. Elemental mapping and textural observations illuminate multiple precipitation and fracturing episodes that continue as the …

Towards The Non-Spectacle: Responses To Necropolitics In The Artwork Of Teresa Margolles And Maya Watanabe, Leslie Anne Condon

Masters Theses

How do we engage with artwork that addresses complicated histories

of colonialism and political violence, specifically intangible and

incomprehensible violence? Mexican artist Teresa Margolles’ 2005 work, Lote

Bravo, is named after and composed of the soil from a mass grave site

discovered in 1995 in the southeastern corner of Ciudad Juárez, a city known

internationally for the femicide that has continued to haunt its streets and

peripheries since the 1990s. Peruvian filmmaker Maya Watanabe’s 2019 film

Liminal cinematically documents the official exhumation of two mass graves

in the Ayacucho and Huánuco regions of the Andes highlands, where

A Proposed Mhealth Intervention To Address Patient Barriers To Colposcopy Attendance: Qualitative Interview Study Of Clinic Staff And Patient Perspectives, Jennifer Hemler, Rachel Wagner, Brittany Sullivan, Myneka Macenat, Erin Tagai, Jazmarie Vega, Enrique Hernandez, Suzanne Miller, Kuang-Yi Wen, Charletta Ayers, Mark Einstein, Shawna Hudson, Racquel Kohler Jan 2025

A Proposed Mhealth Intervention To Address Patient Barriers To Colposcopy Attendance: Qualitative Interview Study Of Clinic Staff And Patient Perspectives, Jennifer Hemler, Rachel Wagner, Brittany Sullivan, Myneka Macenat, Erin Tagai, Jazmarie Vega, Enrique Hernandez, Suzanne Miller, Kuang-Yi Wen, Charletta Ayers, Mark Einstein, Shawna Hudson, Racquel Kohler

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer disparities persist among minoritized women due to infrequent screening and poor follow-up. Structural and psychosocial barriers to following up with colposcopy are problematic for minoritized women. Evidence-based interventions using patient navigation and tailored telephone counseling, including the Tailored Communication for Cervical Cancer Risk (TC3), have modestly improved colposcopy attendance. However, the efficacious TC3 intervention is human resource-intense and could have greater reach if adapted for mobile health, which increases convenience and access to health information.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe feedback from clinic staff members involved in colposcopy processes and patients referred for colposcopy regarding adaptions …

Identifying The Effect Of Architecture Morphology On Wind Fields And Pm2.5 Dispersion At The Urban Block Scale Via A Combined Scheme, Bin Guo, Lu Li, Xiaowei Zhu, Zheng Wang, Miaoyi Chen, Lin Pei, Tengyue Guo Jan 2025

Identifying The Effect Of Architecture Morphology On Wind Fields And Pm2.5 Dispersion At The Urban Block Scale Via A Combined Scheme, Bin Guo, Lu Li, Xiaowei Zhu, Zheng Wang, Miaoyi Chen, Lin Pei, Tengyue Guo

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

This study explores the potential of architecture morphology to mitigate PM2.5 pollution through enhanced urban ventilation. Despite the recognized influence of building designs on wind and air pollution distribution at the urban block scale, specific mechanisms remain poorly understood. To address this gap, we have developed an integrative approach combining in-situ observations, Geographic Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and statistical modeling. Here, CFD simulates the flow field and PM2.5 dispersion, using in-situ observations for turbulence model selection. GIS quantify architecture morphology parameters to establish accurate CFD boundary conditions, ensuring simulations reflect real-world conditions and precise …

The Theme Of Conflict Between The East And The West In Zadie Smith’S Novel White Teeth And Kiran Desai’S The Inheritance Of Loss, Suzan Haddad Jan 2025

The Theme Of Conflict Between The East And The West In Zadie Smith’S Novel White Teeth And Kiran Desai’S The Inheritance Of Loss, Suzan Haddad

Jordan Journal of Applied Science-Humanities Series

The argument of this study revolves around the crisis of reconstructing identity as a manifestation of cultural resistance in White Teeth by British writer Zadie Smith and in Kiran Desai’s The Inheritance of Loss. This study will focus on how Zadie Smith and Kiran Desai attempt to build a culture of resistance in their respective nations' consciousness through their works. As colonialism has proven its influence on the histories of colonized nations, the colonized have infiltrated the colonialists' claimed justifications for imperialism. One of the controversial issues of post-colonialism is the question of identity, which has become very prominent …

The English And The Welsh: Tolkien’S Rewriting Of History In The Legendarium, Alexander Retakh Jan 2025

The English And The Welsh: Tolkien’S Rewriting Of History In The Legendarium, Alexander Retakh

Journal of Tolkien Research

Early legendarium is often called a "mythology for England," while Tolkien's later tales have been described as mythologies for Britain (by Dimitra Fimi) or Englishness (by Thomas Honegger). Later legendarium still contains fictional versions of English-like peoples, the Hobbits and the Rohirrim. Their construction leads to a re-construction of elements of English history in the subcreation, that often produces fictional analogs not only of the English but of the Welsh. How Tolkien described contacts between the English and their closest neighbors reveals his idea of Englishness (his own national identity) and its place in the narrative.

This article traces appearances …

Jazz And Politics: Was Ornette Coleman Inspired By The Civil Rights Movement?, Jason Dreher, Josiah Boornazian

The IASJ Journal of Applied Jazz Research

Due in part to increasing intellectual and political polarization in the United States in recent decades, there has been a resultant decrease in viewpoint diversity and an increase in instances of groupthink and widespread conceptual bias in the construction of many jazz history narratives. One example of these phenomena is the historiographical narratives linking free jazz and avant-garde jazz with the Civil Rights Movement in twentieth-century America. In the past several decades, the narrative that free jazz and/or avant-garde jazz was predominantly artistically inspired by the Civil Rights Movement has become broadly espoused by a wide variety of both scholarly …

Climate Conversations: An Intergenerational Artistic Exploration With Family, Julia A. Craven Jan 2025

Climate Conversations: An Intergenerational Artistic Exploration With Family, Julia A. Craven

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

This cross-generational study explores perceptions of climate change through interviews and visual art from three generations: the author, their grandparents, and their aunt. Guided by questions such as “Whose responsibility is it to address climate change?” and “How has climate change affected you?,” the interviews were used to create three art pieces that explore different aspects of climate change. The first art piece, titled “Eco-Anxiety,” visually represents the author's anxiety about climate change through the detangling of hair in their hands that "pull" at relevant climate news articles in the background. The second piece, “Beauty’s in the Eye of the …

Grass Weed Control And Rice Response With Tetflupyrolimet-Containing Programs, Mason C. Castner, Jason K. Norsworthy, Thomas R. Butts, Trenton L. Roberts, Nick R. Bateman, Travis R. Faske

Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Tetflupyrolimet is the first herbicide with a novel site of action (SOA) labeled PRE and early POST for use in agronomic crops to be labeled in the last three decades. Direct-seeded paddy rice field experiments were conducted near Stuttgart, AR, on a silt loam soil and near Keiser, AR, on a clay soil to evaluate tetflupyrolimet-containing herbicide programs in comparison to commercial standards in conventional, imidazolinone-resistant, and quizalofop-resistant rice systems. Additionally, a furrow-irrigated rice experiment was conducted near Colt, AR, and Keiser to ensure weed control with clomazone and tetflupyrolimet mixtures compared to commercial standards. Twelve commonly planted rice cultivars …

Three Greek Inscriptions From The Monastery At Nahal Pehar (Giv‘Ot Bar), In The Northern Negev, Leah Di Segni Jan 2025

Three Greek Inscriptions From The Monastery At Nahal Pehar (Giv‘Ot Bar), In The Northern Negev, Leah Di Segni

'Atiqot

Three Greek inscriptions were discovered within a small coenobium at Giv‘ot Bar in the northern Negev. One was set in a mosaic pavement in the chapel, and the other two were painted in red ink on building blocks found in the debris near the entrance to the chapel. The mosaic inscription mentions a string of names, probably of the monks who cared for the laying of the mosaic pavement in the chapel, or perhaps for the foundation of the coenobium. The two other inscriptions are epitaphs, indicating that the chapel was also used for burial. One epitaph mentions a date …

Literatures Dreaming Of A Better World On Teaching 21st-Century Philippine Literatures, Edgar Calabia Samar Jan 2025

Literatures Dreaming Of A Better World On Teaching 21st-Century Philippine Literatures, Edgar Calabia Samar

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

This paper starts on the assumption that literature does not simply reflect reality— it shapes the conditions by which that reality can be reimagined. To teach twentyfirst- century Philippine literature is not to fix a canon or reinforce a curriculum, but to reframe possibility: in language, in form, in pedagogy, and in community. It proposes a method of engaging with the teaching of twenty-first-century Philippine literatures today: PAKI. The acronym stands for Pakikisangkot (Engagement), Ambisyon (Ambition), Kahusayan (Excellence), and Inmortalidad (Immortality). PAKI is also an affix that becomes a word meaning care, which in a classroom saturated with distraction, is …

Cmsi Translations #12: Strengthen Command Capabilities To Win Future Naval Battles, Wei Gong Jan 2025

Cmsi Translations #12: Strengthen Command Capabilities To Win Future Naval Battles, Wei Gong

CMSI Translations

Chairman Xi Jinping's emphasis on "strengthening command capabilities" has indicated the direction of effort and injected a powerful impetus for all-level commanders to fulfill their main responsibilities, meet challenges from adversaries, and win future naval battles. Observing the emerging patterns of new combat capabilities in new domains and reviewing the year's work to prepare for war, in the case of new combat platforms, commanders’ ability to strengthen their command capabilities is reflected in their dual responsibility for both the platform and the system. This includes the responsibilities to scientifically coordinate maneuver and firepower to address threats from individual ships and …

Regions Of Risk: A Geographical Introduction To Disasters By Kenneth Hewitt, Taly D. Drezner Jan 2025

Regions Of Risk: A Geographical Introduction To Disasters By Kenneth Hewitt, Taly D. Drezner

The Geographical Bulletin

Regions of Risk is a comprehensive text that painstakingly describes how disasters and the threat of disasters shape and geographically alter communities and regions all over the world. In his introduction, Hewitt writes, "Any given risk or disaster event is distinguished by its geographic location and setting. These are important keys to the origins of danger, the forms of damage and whom they most affect."

Exploring Geographic Information Systems By Nicholas Chrisman, Eric Matranga

The Geographical Bulletin

Rather than attempting to define the bounds and scope of geographic information, Chrisman provides an organizational framework that" . .. challenges the reader to participate in the exploration". Exploring Geographic Information Systems uses a nested set of interrelated issues to emphasize the need for users to think critically about the appropriate use of methods, tools, and data in GIS.

Physical Hydrology By S. Lawrence Ding-Man, Patricia J. Beyer Jan 2025

Physical Hydrology By S. Lawrence Ding-Man, Patricia J. Beyer

The Geographical Bulletin

As the public eye increasingly focuses on issues related to the use and quality of water, the science of hydrology expands from its position as an academic and engineering endeavor to one of prominance in people's everyday lives. With this expansion comes the need for education, not only for hydrologists and geomorphologists, but for biologists, botanists, earth scientists, climatologists, land managers, developers and policy makers. Water is a fascinating and complex substance: not only is water itself a resource, but it is also a main pathway for energy and chemical transfer in the Earth-atmosphere system.

Environmental Geography: Science, Land Use, And Earth Systems By William M.Marsh And John M. Grossa, Eric Matranga

The Geographical Bulletin

Environmental Geography is an introductory text for undergraduate instruction. Marsh and Grossa recognize a lack of geographic perspectives in such texts. They set as their task, building "on the traditional themes of geography". Concepts covered include environmental systems, principles of space, scale and distributions, and landscape as the result of human-environment interaction.
