Regulating Religious Coexistence : The Intricacies Of Interfaith Cooperation In Coastal Kenya, Erik Meinema
Regulating Religious Coexistence : The Intricacies Of Interfaith Cooperation In Coastal Kenya, Erik Meinema
Ohio University Press Open Access Books
Regulating Religious Coexistence offers a compelling ethnographic analysis of how Muslims, Christians, and practitioners of indigenous African religions negotiate coexistence in Kenya’s coastal region. The book conceptualizes religious diversity as a dynamic field shaped by multiple partly intersecting and partly conflicting models of interaction. These include the political secularism promoted by the Kenyan state and civil society organizations focused on interfaith harmony, forms of competition between religious groups, and pluralistic practices in which individuals draw on multiple traditions to meet spiritual needs.
Through a close examination of civil society initiatives funded by Western donors to foster peacebuilding and to counter …

Field-induced electrochemistry has attracted increasing attention as a complementary strategy for regulating electrode process kinetics beyond conventional composition and structure optimization. Externally applied fields and local fields arising from interfacial polarization, nonuniform charge or spin distribution, defects, heterostructures, spontaneous polarization, and high curvature surface geometries can influence adsorption, interfacial electron transfer, ion and mass transport, and gas–liquid transport. This review summarizes the conceptual development from field-induced chemistry to field-induced electrochemistry and discusses field effects from a multiscale kinetic perspective, including atomic and molecular processes, nanoscale interfacial regulation, and mesoscopic and macroscopic transport. Representative electric, magnetic, flow, strain, thermal, acoustic, and …

Response Of The Eddystone Lighthouse To Storm-Wave Impacts, Davide Banfi, Alison Raby, Geoffrey Bullock, David Simmonds
Response Of The Eddystone Lighthouse To Storm-Wave Impacts, Davide Banfi, Alison Raby, Geoffrey Bullock, David Simmonds
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Structural response to wave action is difficult to predict due to complex wave–structure interactions, particularly for structures subject to impulsive loads from breaking waves such as rock lighthouses. This study examines the response of the exposed Eddystone Lighthouse, located some 21 km offshore from Plymouth, UK, using field measurements from geophones, video cameras and an offshore wave buoy. Accelerations and displacements are derived from geophone velocity measurements recorded just below the lantern during 3085 response events in the exceptional UK winter storms of 2013–2014. These are complemented by video records of breaking waves with estimated heights up to 10–15 m. …

INTRODUCTION: Cultural sensitivity and relevance are critical components for best practice in occupational therapy assessment. The Evaluation in Ayres Sensory Integration (EASI) is a performance-based assessment designed to evaluate sensory perception, sensory reactivity, postural control, ocular control, bilateral integration, and praxis abilities in children aged 3-12 years. Before the development of this tool, no standardized performance-based assessment of sensory integration functions had included a normative Turkish sample. The objective of this study was to translate and culturally adapt the EASI for Türkiye.
METHOD: A seven-step process for translation and cross-cultural adaptation, grounded in established methodology, was applied. The steps included …

BACKGROUND: Managing patients with non-survivable head trauma who do not meet brain death criteria presents significant ethical and clinical challenges. Decisions frequently fall to surrogates with limited guidance, particularly when organ donation status is unknown. This study assessed physician perspectives on communication, interventions, and institutional factors.
METHODS: We conducted a national survey of academic neurosurgery, trauma surgery, and neurocritical care programs. Items examined communication barriers, interventions by donor status, institutional support, and a dissonance measure for interventions viewed as inappropriate.
RESULTS: A total of 133 physicians responded. Top communication barriers were medical literacy, unclear patient values, and intrafamily conflict. Physicians …

Molecular And Structural Basis For Replication Initiation And Strand Separation By Human Mitochondrial Dna Polymerase Γ, Viktoriia Sokolova, Gina Buchel, S. Strock, Ashok R. Nayak, Dmitry Temiakov
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
Defects in human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) replication can lead to somatic mutations associated with a range of devastating mitochondrial diseases. However, the molecular mechanisms governing the earliest steps of mtDNA replication and their fidelity remain poorly understood. Here, we found that DNA polymerase gamma (Polγ) forms stable complexes with RNA-DNA primer-template substrates, exhibiting greater stability and lower misincorporation than on DNA-primed substrates. Structural analysis revealed that Polγ interacts with the 2'-OH groups of ribose within the first four nucleotides of the primer, explaining the stability of complexes that utilize RNA primers. Although Polγ requires TWINKLE to extend RNA primers, its …
Biases And Paradoxes: The Politics Of New Aestheticism's Depoliticization, Fang Yuan
Biases And Paradoxes: The Politics Of New Aestheticism's Depoliticization, Fang Yuan
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
New aestheticism is a school of literary criticism that emerged in the early twenty-first century. Rather than simply returning to traditional aestheticism, it incorporates insights from multiple theoretical traditions. It critiques social-historical criticism and cultural studies in an effort to downplay the political dimension of literary criticism, instead emphasizing individualized experience and aesthetic pleasure. However, new aestheticism reveals significant theoretical biases and inherent paradoxes. It overlooks the sustained attention that social-historical criticism and cultural studies have devoted to aesthetic questions; it attributes the perceived decline of English studies to the utilitarian tendencies of criticism; and it seeks to free itself …
The Fragmentation Of Helcar: A Paratethyan Model For Rhûn, Núrnen And The Dead Marshes, Federico Manzoni
The Fragmentation Of Helcar: A Paratethyan Model For Rhûn, Núrnen And The Dead Marshes, Federico Manzoni
Journal of Tolkien Research
This work proposes a conjectural paleogeographic model linking the Sea of Rhûn, Núrnen and the Dead Marshes to the former Sea of Helcar. Beginning from Christopher Tolkien's suggestion that Rhûn may represent Helcar ``vastly shrunken,'' the study combines textual evidence, the Ambarkanta, Fonstad's cartographic reconstructions, and terrestrial analogues drawn from the evolution of the Paratethys, the Messinian Salinity Crisis and other endorheic basins. Helcar is interpreted not merely as an isolated body of deep water but as the centre of a broader hydrological province subsequently partitioned by relief change, sedimentary infilling, basin isolation and drainage reorganization. Within this model, Rhûn …

Semantic Shields: Automating Critical Infrastructure Defense Via Nlp-Driven Ransomware Profiling, Henry Trowbridge, Ian Zalcberg, Ryan Schley, Carter Yagemann, Natasha Phan, Srikar Maduposu, Vimal Buck
Military Cyber Affairs
Ransomware poses a growing threat to critical infrastructure, where successful attacks can disrupt operational technology (OT) and industrial control systems (ICS) with significant public safety consequences. However, attributing ransomware incidents to specific threat actors remains challenging due to ransomware-as-a-service ecosystems, actor rebranding, and the obfuscation of traditional indicators of compromise. This paper presents Semantic Shields, an NLP-driven attribution framework that leverages BERT-generated semantic embeddings and DBSCAN clustering to profile ransomware actors through the linguistic characteristics of ransom notes. Using a dataset of 295 ransom notes from 189 distinct threat groups, the framework achieved an 87.2% true positive clustering rate and …

Disney And Critical Global Citizenship: Border Politics And Linguistic Decolonization In The Lion Guard, Gordana Lazić
Disney And Critical Global Citizenship: Border Politics And Linguistic Decolonization In The Lion Guard, Gordana Lazić
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
In this essay, I analyze the Disney television series The Lion Guard as a site of public pedagogy and argue that the show fosters a form of critical global citizenship among young viewers. It does this, I further maintain, in two primary ways: the progressive treatment of and careful attention to immigration and border politics, and disruption of the hegemony of the English language. Through age-appropriate plot development and dialogue, The Lion Guard actively participates in public pedagogy urging future policy and decision-makers to develop critical global consciousness.

Common Symptoms In Homoeopathy. Are They Really Useless? Results From An Empirical Assessment Of Best Cases Data From A Bayesian Perspective: An Observational Study, José Enrique Eizayaga, Lex L. Rutten
Indian Journal of Research in Homoeopathy
Background: In seeking the homoeopathic medicine that best fits their case, homoeopaths traditionally yield greater value to the most peculiar symptoms, while dismissing those they believe to be common, according to the number of medicines found in repertories' rubrics. Objectives: To assess the validity of the following homoeopathic usual practice notions: common symptoms are useless and prescription should rely on peculiar ones. Methods: Empirical data from the Best Chronic Homeopathic Cases (BCHC) and the COVID-19 cases collection databases were analysed by using a Bayesian approach. Symptoms' prevalence and likelihood ratio (LR) were calculated. Results from three very common symptoms in …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Challenges Related To Science Vocabulary Instruction In Wyoming Elementary Schools, Alexis Barney
Teachers’ Perceptions Of The Challenges Related To Science Vocabulary Instruction In Wyoming Elementary Schools, Alexis Barney
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Science vocabulary supports conceptual understanding, engagement in scientific discourse, and achievement across content areas. The problem addressed in this study was Wyoming’s low literacy and science performance, as indicated by standardized and national test scores, highlighting the critical need for improved vocabulary instruction to close gaps in content-specific terminology that hindered elementary students’ understanding and achievement. The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore Wyoming elementary science teachers’ perceptions of challenges, instructional strategies, and recommendations for improving science vocabulary instruction. Guided by Vygotsky’s (1978) constructivist theory and the concept of the zone of proximal development, the study included …

Respondent superintendent moves for summary judgment dismissing this RPAPL §713(11) holdover on the ground that petitioner's notice of petition materially departed from the mandatory form prescribed by AO/163/19 and 22 NYCRR §208.42(b): the "Language Help" multilingual section contained corrupted characters, organizational boxes were omitted, and prescribed emphasis and visual spacing were eliminated. Court holds that "mandatory" means the prescribed form must be used—it is not suggested language from which a petitioner may construct a substitute—and applies the First Department's strict compliance standard from Riverside Syndicate, Inc. v. Saltzman, 49 AD3d 402 [1st Dept 2008]. The departures impair the form's access-to-justice …
Quality Improvement Project: Improving Nursing Knowledge And Confidence Of Dysglycemia In Pediatric Oncology Patients, Lindley Abrams
Quality Improvement Project: Improving Nursing Knowledge And Confidence Of Dysglycemia In Pediatric Oncology Patients, Lindley Abrams
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Treatment-induced dysglycemia is a frequently underrecognized complication of pediatric cancer therapy. Pediatric oncology nurses play a critical role in recognizing and managing dysglycemia; however, limited exposure to specialized dysglycemia education may contribute to gaps in knowledge and confidence. A site needs assessment found that 53% of nurses reported discomfort with glycemia-related concepts, supporting the need for targeted education. The purpose of the project was to evaluate changes in pediatric oncology nurses’ knowledge and confidence in recognizing and responding to treatment-induced dysglycemia. The project aimed to provide a structured educational intervention and measure pre- and post-intervention changes. Newman’s Health as Expanding …

Quality Improvement Project: Implementing A Standardized Psychiatric Handoff Tool To Impact Nurse-To-Nurse Communication In An Acute Care Psychiatric Setting, Andrea Ranglin-Johnson
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
Evidence supports that inconsistent nurse-to-nurse handoff communication may contribute to omitted information, workflow inefficiencies, and patient safety concerns in acute psychiatric settings. The practice problem was the absence of a standardized psychiatric handoff process, which contributed to inconsistent shift report communication. This quality improvement project examined whether the PSYCH (Patient Profile, Situation, Your Clinical Assessment, Care Plan/ Critical Information, and Hindrance for Discharge) standardized handoff tool impacted nurses' perceptions of nurse-to-nurse communication over six weeks. Lewin's Change Theory guided implementation, while the Donabedian Structure-Process-Outcome Model provided the theoretical framework. The Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle supported implementation. A pre- and post-implementation design was …
