Future-Oriented Science Learning And Its Effects On Students’ Emotions, Futures Literacy And Agency In The Anthropocene, Jessica Chan, Sibel Erduran Nov 2024

Future-Oriented Science Learning And Its Effects On Students’ Emotions, Futures Literacy And Agency In The Anthropocene, Jessica Chan, Sibel Erduran

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

Science education bears the broader objective of nurturing students today to be scientifically-literate citizens of tomorrow who are able to foresee challenges, invent solutions and make responsible decisions for global issues. As a prelude to the new focus of agency in the Anthropocene, this paper presents an intervention on climate change with upper secondary students in a museum of natural history in England. Instructional strategies such as infusing scenarios and arts into scientific discussions were adopted to induce imagination, future-oriented thinking and emotional responses. Statistical results showed that the intervention significantly enhanced participants’ futures literacy, environmental agency and positive emotions. …

Machine Learning Based Segmentation Of Delamination Patterns From Sparse Ultrasound Data Of Barely Visible Impact Damage In Composites, Paul Davidson, Don Nguyen, Karen Demille, Vipul Ranatunga Nov 2024

Machine Learning Based Segmentation Of Delamination Patterns From Sparse Ultrasound Data Of Barely Visible Impact Damage In Composites, Paul Davidson, Don Nguyen, Karen Demille, Vipul Ranatunga

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Composite laminates, known for their strength and flexibility, are widely used but can delaminate under certain barely visible impact. Ultrasound Transmission (UT) scans can detect such failures, but the noise in the scans makes automation of delamination morphology challenging. Machine learning could solve this, but it requires substantial training data. Furthermore, given the considerable time and cost of conducting impact tests on composite laminates, such data remains sparse. This study overcomes data sparsity by enlarging UT scan dataset using image augmentation techniques and synthetic data generation methods. A combination of rotation and elastic deformation of real UT images produced augmented …

Speculum Feminarum: Feminine Representation And Identity In Fifteenth-Century France, Karli R. Snyder Nov 2024

Speculum Feminarum: Feminine Representation And Identity In Fifteenth-Century France, Karli R. Snyder

Art & Art History ETDs

Late medieval views of women in Western European culture, specifically in fifteenth-century France, were predicated on the ideologies of "other." According to normative sociocultural attitudes of this period, women were immoral, lascivious, and indulged in frivolity. Their culturally acceptable and, therefore, natural roles were delineated solely as that of wife and mother. Although the origin of these views is obscured by time, there are scores of textual and visual examples of this cultural labeling. This thesis focuses on how the ideologies of feminine sociocultural roles developed and matured during the late Middle Ages. By comparatively analyzing copies of the visual …

Race And American College Testing (Act) Scores In Illinois, Wendy Shaw, Bin Zhou Nov 2024

Race And American College Testing (Act) Scores In Illinois, Wendy Shaw, Bin Zhou

The Geographical Bulletin

This paper explores links between race and ethnicity, and performance on the American College Testing (ACT) within Illinois. This paper utilizes information about the performance of Illinois’ 85, 480 year 2000 graduating seniors who took the ACT assessment. The ACT scores reported by county are broken down into various racial and ethnic groupings, and a Geographic Information System was used to map and explore the spatial dimensions of the data. The results of the analysis indicate that performance on the ACT varies by the type of county involved, and is linked to family income rather than to race per se. …

Multimedia Technology In The School Geography Classroom: A Case Study, Daniel P. Donaldson Nov 2024

Multimedia Technology In The School Geography Classroom: A Case Study, Daniel P. Donaldson

The Geographical Bulletin

Today, educators are being called on to cultivate a more geographically literate body of students. Just as computer technologies have found use in nearly all aspects of North American society, they are now looked upon as a tool which will enhance students’ geography learning. Through the use of multimedia software packages, it has been suggested that students will gain a more intricate collection of spatial understandings. This work draws on results of direct intervention in two sixth-grade classrooms in Cleveland, Ohio. It compares two methods of teaching and learning geographic concepts: one employing the use of multimedia and the other …

It’S Dangerous To Learn Alone – Play This: Video Games In Higher Education, Particularly In The Composition Classroom, Joy Sterrantino

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

When people think of educational games, they often just think of ones geared towards kids: these might include spelling and vocabulary games like Scribblenauts, creative games such as Minecraft, as well as historical games such as Carmen [Sandiego]’s Ancient Caper, but according to the Entertainment Software Association in 2019, 65% of adults play video games (almost half of which are female), the average gamer is 33 years old, and 63% of all gamers are playing with others at least one hour a week (“Essential Facts” 4, 5, 8). This means that the majority of …

Halfies, Half-Written Letters, And One-Eyed Gods: Connecting The Dots Of Communicative Cultures, Gregory Stephens

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

This essay distills the theory of communicative cultures as a tool for cultural analysis. Nadine Gordimer’s line about the difficulties of returning to “half-written letters” is used to frame anthropology’s critique of “bounded culture” or “container cultures,” predominat in Cultural Studies. Anthropologists Lila Abu-Lughod and Kirin Narayan have described “halfies” as in-between peoples who can help us understand fluid, processual cultures as normative. Building on this stance, and the work of rhetorical genre scholars, Stephens defines communicative cultures as “a set of shared commitments expressed through cultural means.” This approach to cultural analysis, in which literature is viewed as an …

Experimental Forms And Identity Politics In 21st Century American Poetry, Ronnie Stephens

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

“Experimental Forms and Identity Politics in 21st Century American Poetry” explores the function of form in American poetry and its proximity to whiteness. Through an analysis of experimental and nontraditional forms I argue that poets Fatimah Asghar, Jericho Brown, Franny Choi, Natalie Diaz, Ilya Kaminsky, and Danez Smith challenge traditional notions of what a poem is; these authors use graphics and co-opt familiar text objects to challenge larger assumptions about gender identity, ableism, and the immigrant experience. These experimental forms are grounded in a larger poetic tradition that alters traditional forms, such as the sonnet, to disrupt and further dialogue …

Conceptualizing Empathy And Prosocial Action: Teaching Film Within The Literature Classroom, Mayuri Deka

Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy

The experience of viewing a movie in the global era is multi-faceted. A viewer’s response to a cinematic experience as Carl Plantinga explains in Moving Viewers: American Film and the Spectator’s Experience is not only admiration for the aesthetics and techniques employed in the movie but also in the emotions aroused by the storyline. Audiences react to the story and characters presented with directed emotions by imagining either their mental lives and feelings or their situations. Empathy occurs within this framework of imagination where the audience engages with the story and character based on these directed emotions. The audience …

I love traveling, and I hope to make it an integral part of my life by getting a job as a commercial pilot in the future. I also love capturing the beauty of the world as I see it while traveling full of vibrant colors, awe-inspiring scenery, and diverse cultures. I hope my photography is able to capture the world as I see it, so that I may share it with you.

I love words. Words are totally amazing. Words allude, cordon off, cordon in, exfoliate, and blossom. And words are just so strange. The meaning in words can change over, their footprints marking you with their history. And yet, one conclusion I’ve come to as an English PhD student at the University of North Dakota, as a person who lives and breathes and teaches words every day, is that words can’t express all of my feelings. It’s a sad notion for me—one that I’ve tried to deny. So, as an English PhD student who is far enough along in his studies …

I question conventional boundaries through a series of action and reaction, a safari between permanence and transience, interrogating whether paper is shaped forever. Pulp painting promises a negotiation of form while carrying abstraction. My intention is to evoke that magic certitude borne of a dedicated approach. Having caught some idea, I broaden it with weird fibers, give the thing depth, complete a cycle of reasoning by returning to the starting point in a way a sculptor might imagine the pose of a figure hidden in a lump of stone. By marrying feeling and intellect, I find a facility of control. …
