Towards The Development Of A Gis Model For Planning And Administering Literacy Education Programs In Urban Areas, Jeffrey P. Richetto, William E. Couch

The Geographical Bulletin

As the world continues to change ever higher demands are placed on individuals, households, and businesses; thus, the definition and need to be literate also continue to shift. Today, adults require greater levels of basic skills commensurate to function effectively in an increasingly visual and technological environment. Within the United States fewer than ten percent of the estimated 44 million adults who could potentially benefit from literacy programs are currently being served. Additional funding, improved coordination among service providers, and greater availability of support services including childtare, transportation, and accessible class meeting sites are important planning issues. Therefore, it becomes …

Use Of Intraosseous Vascular Access In Adults: A Systematic Review, Courtney Krol, Philip Ordonez, Khavir Sharieff D.O.

HCA-NSU MD Research Day

Objective. This study evaluates the efficacy of intraosseous (IO) access in adults compared to peripheral intravenous (PIV) access and examines associated benefits and complications. Background. IO access is more commonly used in children than adults for PIV access. Despite its increasing use, its efficacy and safety in adults remains less extensively studied, particularly in comparison to traditional PIV methods. Methods. A literature search was conducted in July 2024 using PubMed, Web of Science, and Ovid MEDLINE, using keywords such as “intraosseous” and “adults.” The review included studies published from 2010 onwards, patients aged 18 and older, and written in English. …

Evaluating Tirzepatide's Therapeutic Potential In Mitigating Obesity-Associated Comorbidities, Zaneh Kahook, Talaya Jones, Carina Bryan, Mayur Parmar

HCA-NSU MD Research Day

Objective: The study aims to explore the therapeutic potential of dual GIP/GLP-1 agonist tirzepatide in managing obesity and its associated manifestations, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), and obesity-associated cancer (OAC) risks. Background: OSA and HS are the associated comorbidities noted in persons with obesity. Obesity has been associated with an increased risk of cancers, such as breast cancer. Reducing obesity could improve these conditions. Tirzepatide has demonstrated efficacy in reducing body weight, but its benefits in obesity-related conditions and cancer risk need further investigation. Methods: Data was synthesized from peer-reviewed literature on tirzepatide. Additional sources were identified …

HCA-NSU MD Research Day

Objective: Adolescents with diabetes mellitus (DM) have worse glycemic outcomes and lower adherence to self-management regimens than other age groups. The COVID-19 pandemic posed new DM self-management barriers for adolescents tied to social distancing measures and additional stressors. We conducted a scoping review of peer-reviewed literature to examine self-management regimens and outcomes among adolescents ages 10-17 years with type 1 and type 2 DM during the pandemic. Methods: Our scoping review followed the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. We searched three online databases, screened articles via a rigorous process, and assessed articles for bias using the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklists. We synthesized included …

The quantitative phase investigated the extent to which race and gender identity predicted verbal and physical harassment, while the qualitative phase explored the types of harassment experiences for trans students of color. Quantitative findings highlight a higher incidence of verbal and physical harassment for Alaska Native/American Indian trans individuals and trans women, and …

Pedagogies Of The Home And Terquedad In Transgender Parenting And Teaching, Jackson M. Matos Nov 2024

Pedagogies Of The Home And Terquedad In Transgender Parenting And Teaching, Jackson M. Matos

Journal of Queer and Trans Studies in Education

This counter-narrative utilizes pedagogies of the home (Garcia & Delgado Bernal, 2021; Delgado Bernal, 2001) and terquedad, or intentional resistance against dominant group norms (Salas-Santa Cruz, 2020) to illustrate how I transmit home-based lessons regarding oppression and liberation to my children and to my college-aged students. It demonstrates the importance of vulnerability (Caraves, 2020) in sharing counter-narratives with both groups, and illustrates how resistance and terquedad can be utilized to actualize social justice. I describe how I, as a Puerto transgender parent and educator, use my body and lived experiences as text (Helton, 2020) for curriculum in my home and …

Objective: This study evaluates the effectiveness and applicability of PMSGs created from 3D-printed models in managing aortic disease. Background: Endovascular treatment of aortic disease can be challenging, especially with complex anatomy. Three-dimensional (3D) printed models, derived from computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, have been used to create physician-modified stent grafts (PMSGs) for vascular procedures involving the aorta. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in July 2024 across Embase, Ovid Medline, and Web of Science using PRISMA guidelines. Keywords included “aorta”, “3-dimensional printing”, and “implant”. Only studies reporting use of 3D printing-assisted PMSGs in aortic disease repair, …

Hans Holbein's Portrait Of Henry Viii: England's Own Personal Jesus, Amy Pitsor

Best Integrated Writing

Pitsor explores the possibility that Holbein’s late-stage change in the composition of the portrait from a three-quarter view of Henry to a frontal view held a motive to present Henry as the head of the newly established Church of England and as equal to the pope, and possibly to Christ himself.

La Falta De Los Supermercados En El Oeste De Dayton: Cómo Obtienen Los Estudiantes Comida Fresca En Los Desiertos Alimentarios (Un Ensayo Expositivo-Argumentativo, Catherine Iacobacci

Best Integrated Writing

After having learned about how poverty can affect children’s educational outcomes in one of her classes, Iacobacci wanted to learn more about how the issue affected the area where she lived and went to school. What she found out was incredibly shocking, and only furthered the idea that students are struggling with opportunity gaps, not achievement ones. Unfortunately, due to discriminatory loan practices from long ago, children from the 21st century are suffering physically, emotionally, and academically.

Analysis Of The Integration Of Race And Cultural Concordant Doulas Into The Birth Experience Of African American Women, Cherissa Garcia

Best Integrated Writing

Garcia's study looks at how integrating race and cultural-concordant doulas into the birth experience of African American women would impact outcomes. She found similar studies that provided strong evidence to support doula integration. However, most did not select study populations that appropriately reflected the African American women at increased risk of poor outcomes. As a result, Garcia designed a study that looked at race and cultural concordance between doulas and patients from a wide range of SES backgrounds and varying degrees of pregnancy risk.

Dissertations

Intensive care unit (ICU) survivors are at risk for persistent anxiety and depression after hospital discharge that contribute to the psychological component of post intensive care syndrome (PICS). Quality evidence supporting innovative home and community-based interventions that improve psychological health in ICU survivors is needed.
