The Fictions Of Necessity, Charlie Samuya Veric Nov 2024

The Fictions Of Necessity, Charlie Samuya Veric

Kritika Kultura

Nationalism’s great success as well as its great failure comes from the fact that it is an artefact of the mind that strives to imagine a closed society. In Charlie Samuya Veric’s review of Necessary Fictions, he lays bare the implications of Caroline S. Hau’s uncovering of the narratives of exclusion in the ways the nation is conceived in key Filipino literary texts. As Hau inquires into the problematic authorships of the fictions of nation, Veric, meanwhile, returns the problem of Hau’s criticism of the idea of nationalism as a necessary fiction. Necessary, Veric asks, for whom? For what purpose?

Pedagogy: Teaching Practices Of American Colonial Educators In The Philippines, Isabel Pefianco Martin Nov 2024

Pedagogy: Teaching Practices Of American Colonial Educators In The Philippines, Isabel Pefianco Martin

Kritika Kultura

Filipino historian and essayist Renato Constantino wrote: “With American education, the Filipinos were not only learning a new language; they were not only forgetting their own language; they were starting to become a new type of American.” What specific strategies did the American colonizers use to create this new type of American? How did they use the public schools to produce their cultural clones? The answer may be found in the language and literature teaching practices of American colonial educators in the Philippines. This paper argues that the Anglo American canon of literature imposed on the Filipinos would not have …

Literature Engineering In West Visayas, Leoncio P. Deriada Nov 2024

Literature Engineering In West Visayas, Leoncio P. Deriada

Kritika Kultura

Language engineering involves the willful, studied—or even legislated—empowering of language to hasten its development. Literature, whose medium is language, can likewise be engineered. Certainly, an indicator of tremendous talent in the creation of contemporary literature and in nation building, the emergent writers of the region have sharpened their sense of locus just as they have succeeded in asserting their place in the nationhood of Philippine literature. Through generous funding and support, new writers have been developed and older writers invigorated. Thus, new writings have manifested themselves. For years, West Visayan writing had been only in Hiligaynon, the lingua franca, and …

Song And Substance: Women Writing Poetry In Cebuano, Marjorie Evasco Nov 2024

Song And Substance: Women Writing Poetry In Cebuano, Marjorie Evasco

Kritika Kultura

Among the emergent voices in Philippine Literature in the past decade up to the present, the most exciting to read and listen to are those of the women in the Visayas and Mindanao who are writing poetry and fiction in Cebuano. Never before since the “golden age of Cebuano literature” from 1900-1940 have the creative work of women seen such burgeoning. And this growth is substantiated by the creative work published in three literary anthologies by women, namely Centering Voices (1995), Fern Garden: Anthology of Women Writing in the South (1998), and Sinug-ang: A Cebuano Trio (1999). This paper focuses …

Fragile Arena: The Struggle Between Protest And Confinement In Three Sugilanon, Ma. Teresa Wright Nov 2024

Fragile Arena: The Struggle Between Protest And Confinement In Three Sugilanon, Ma. Teresa Wright

Kritika Kultura

Though the Hiligaynon prose narrative form called the sugilanon appears innocuous enough, it can also be—and has been—used as a channel of social protest. As a protest text, the sugilanon can expose, criticize, and propose alternatives to perceived social wrongs such as the oppression of one individual by another or of one social class by another. This paper seeks to explore the protest aspect of the sugilanon through three examples of the form. The three texts are analyzed and evaluated in terms of the extent to which they manifest recognition of and engagement with, the oppression in the world that …

From Birmingham To Angkor Wat: Demarcations Of Contemporary Cultural Studies, E. San Juan Jr. Nov 2024

From Birmingham To Angkor Wat: Demarcations Of Contemporary Cultural Studies, E. San Juan Jr.

Kritika Kultura

The radical inspiration of Cultural Studies has been betrayed, declares E. San Juan, Jr. In this timely essay, he argues that this betrayal springs from the postmodernist temperament, the “metaphysical turn,” of contemporary Cultural Studies. By exaggerating “the possibility of liberation over the established fact of domination,” Cultural Studies has abandoned fundamental categories such as class and nation in favor of race and gender, among others. The frivolous has overcome the political: commercial icons and rituals are now fantasized to topple the very system that makes their condition possible. “In what sense can this still inchoate and contested terrain called …

The Use Of Gamification In Tutoring Sessions, Megan L. Lee Nov 2024

The Use Of Gamification In Tutoring Sessions, Megan L. Lee

Honors Capstones

Many students entering the college world have grown up around technology and use it in their everyday lives. While students are showing an increased use and understanding of technology, traditional tutoring methods do not incorporate these skills. Tutoring can be a useful adjunct to the classroom setting regarding student success but can be lacking in student engagement when designed in lecture-based formats to mimic the classroom setting. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the impact of gamification, especially the use of Kahoot, in tutoring sessions on student engagement. A qualitative research study was conducted with sixteen first semester nursing students …

Best Practice Toolkit For Increasing Colorectal Cancer Screenings In At-Risk Adults, Zoe Windfelder Nov 2024

Best Practice Toolkit For Increasing Colorectal Cancer Screenings In At-Risk Adults, Zoe Windfelder

Student Scholarly Projects

Adult individuals at risk for colorectal cancer (CRC) do not have a direct, accessible best-practice toolkit to follow for screening measures. Research showed that at least three guidelines (i.e., American Cancer Society [ACS], American College of Gastroenterology [ACG], and U.S. Preventive Services Task Forces [USPSTF]) are used interchangeably daily by interprofessional staff for individuals with average to high-risk variables. The project was guided by the following PICOT question: For interprofessional staff supporting the at-risk adult population for colorectal cancer (P), how does the development of a best practice for coordination of care toolkit (I) compared to no structured program strategy …

Humidity And Immersion Based Hygrothermal Aging Of Pultruded Gfrp Composites: Moisture Uptake And Diffusion, Vistasp M. Karbhari, Stephanie Svetlik-Haley

SAGE Open Access Agreement Publications-Archive

Pultruded glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) composites are used extensively in civil, marine, and offshore infrastructure applications. These components can be exposed to long periods of humidity or immersion with long-term performance characteristics being influenced by the rate and level of moisture uptake and its consequent effects. This paper reports on the moisture uptake response and kinetics of a pultruded GFRP composite exposed to a range of relative humidity levels and immersion over a range of temperatures below the glass transition. Four models for diffusion are used to assess the range of uptake responses. It is seen that humidity and …

Cocaine-Induced Dna-Dependent Protein Kinase Relieves Rnap Ii Pausing By Promoting Trim28 Phosphorylation And Rnap Ii Hyperphosphorylation To Enhance Hiv Transcription, Adhikarimayum Lakhikumar Sharma, Priya Tyagi, Meenata Khumallambam, Mudit Tyagi

Center for Translational Medicine Faculty Papers

Drug abuse continues to pose a significant challenge in HIV control efforts. In our investigation, we discovered that cocaine not only upregulates the expression of the DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK) but also augments DNA-PK activation by enhancing its phosphorylation at S2056. Moreover, DNA-PK phosphorylation triggers the higher localization of the DNA-PK into the nucleus. The finding that cocaine increases the nuclear localization of the DNA-PK provides further support to our observation of enhanced DNA-PK recruitment at the HIV long terminal repeat (LTR) following cocaine exposure. By activating and facilitating the nuclear localization of the DNA-PK, cocaine effectively orchestrates multiple stages …

Phenotypic profiling by high throughput microscopy, including Cell Painting, has become a leading tool for screening large sets of perturbations in cellular models. To efficiently analyze this big data, available open-source software requires computational resources usually not available to most laboratories. In addition, the cell-to-cell variation of responses within a population, while collected and analyzed, is usually averaged and unused. We introduce SPACe (Swift Phenotypic Analysis of Cells), an open-source platform for analysis of single-cell image-based morphological profiles produced by Cell Painting. We highlight several advantages of SPACe, including processing speed, accuracy in mechanism of action recognition, reproducibility across biological …

Good Grief!: The Challenging Of Middle-Class Life By Youth Culture In Mafalda And Peanuts, Eden E. Baize

The Cardinal Edge

The politically and socially tumultuous world of the mid-20th century in both Argentina and the United States inspired the creation of two incredibly influential comic strips: Joaquín Salvador Lavado’s, also known as Quino’s, Mafalda in Argentina, and Charles Schultz’s Peanuts in the United States. These comics changed the popular conception of childhood in their respective countries by reflecting the cultural shifts which challenged existing social conventions like family organization. Primarily, however, the central theme of these works rested in the commentary on the growing middle-class and the role of younger generations in championing countercultural and antiestablishment movements against this expansion. …

Can Men Be Feminists?, Abigail M Stanger

The Cardinal Edge

At the emergence of the feminist movements of the mid-nineteenth century, women advocated for and eventually gained the right to make their voices heard in the political arena. As feminism has evolved to campaign for social, economic, and further political equality among genders, the question of who can be a feminist remains a topic of debate. This presentation will first attempt to define feminism historically and in the modern sense, then ponder the evolving definition of a man in relation to their potential role or lack thereof in the modern feminist movement.

How Speech-Language Pathologists Can Collaborate With A Well-Meaning Judiciary To Improve Jury Instructions, Lillian N. Stiegler, Rebecca L. Parker

Journal of Interprofessional Practice and Collaboration

Abstract

Purpose: Many U.S. adults are called upon to fulfill civic responsibilities through jury duty. Jury participation is a responsibility, but it is also a privilege that ensures the balance of power between government and citizens. Problems arise when jury instructions are presented using complex language that challenges the comprehension of laypersons with and without language and literacy differences, negatively influencing the juror’s participation experience and trial outcomes. In spite of plain language mandates and clear findings regarding the average literacy abilities of U.S. adults, much of the legal community persists in the use of difficult jury instructions.

Method: Academic …
