Successful Asian Immigrant Businesses’ Strategies, Claretta Taylor Stokes
Successful Asian Immigrant Businesses’ Strategies, Claretta Taylor Stokes
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Asian immigrant entrepreneurs face significant challenges, including difficulties accessing capital and overcoming language barriers, which can lead to higher failure rates in some cases. To succeed, they must develop effective strategies and identify key resources to grow their businesses and mitigate the risk of failure. Grounded in stakeholder theory, the purpose of this qualitative pragmatic inquiry study was to identify and explore the strategies used by Asian immigrant entrepreneurs in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to expand and sustain their businesses beyond the five-year mark. The participants were nine immigrant entrepreneurs from the Commonwealth who successfully applied strategies that enabled their …

A Call To Study The Bidirectional Relationship Between Healthcare Accessibility Issues And Medical Gaslighting For Marginalized Groups With Chronic Pain, Nikki Harnage
Honors College Theses
Chronic pain is an epidemic in its own right. Affecting 21% of American adults and costing $300 billion each year, chronic pain rivals cancer, diabetes, and hypertension combined. From psychological impacts on patients to worsening health outcomes further burdening the healthcare system and billions of lost productivity stressing the economy, chronic pain can affect all Americans. However, chronic pain disproportionately afflicts marginalized groups including non-whites, women, and disadvantaged socioeconomic classes. For decades, research has demonstrated disparities in diagnosis, treatment, and management of chronic pain are associated with accessibility issues in healthcare, a link that is likely the result of systemic …
Exploring The Curriculum Potential Of The Welsh Word Cynefin By Examining Its New Materialist And Contemplative Pedagogical Resonances, Dylan Adams
Journal of Contemplative and Holistic Education
Cynefin is a key word in the new curriculum for Wales. Yet it is a word that is difficult to define. It has no direct English translation and originates from Welsh hill farming where it was used by farmers to describe how sheep would form a mysterious attachment to different parts of common land. Subsequently, it has come to be associated with a person’s relationship to a place, where they feel at home. This article examines how the concept of cynefin potentially resonates with posthumanist and contemplative pedagogical perspectives. In doing so, it aims to answer the question, “how could …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
An iron selenite-based cathode compound, LiFe(SeO3)2, is synthesized via a simple hydrothermal route. The bulk purity of the compound is confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Mössbauer spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The crystal structure determined from the single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinement of synchrotron PXRD data perfectly matches the previously reported structure in the I4̅2d space group. The crystal structure is built up of edge-sharing of FeO6 octahedra and LiO4 tetrahedra interconnected by SeO3 trigonal pyramidal units, forming a three-dimensional open framework network with channels through all three axes. …
Ecological Epidemiology Of The Fungal Pathogen Ophidiomyces Ophiodiicola In Southeastern U.S. Snake Populations: Distribution, Drivers, And Anthropogenic Risk Factors, Shivam Shukla
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Studying wildlife diseases is an important conservation measure, as many pathogens are a critical threat to biodiversity worldwide. Ophidiomycosis is an emerging infectious disease caused by the invasive fungal pathogen Ophidiomyces ophiodiicola that affects a wide variety of snake species, often causing mortality. There has been limited surveillance for ophidiomycosis in the southeastern United States’ (US) snake populations and research into the effects of anthropogenic disturbance on disease spread is also lacking. Thus, this project aimed to quantify the distribution and drivers (taxonomic, anthropogenic, and morphological) of ophidiomycosis in Florida, Louisiana, and Mississippi’s free ranging snakes as well as study …

BACKGROUND: While high-frequency oscillations (HFOs) and their stereotyped clusters (sHFOs) have emerged as potential neuro-biomarkers for the rapid localization of the seizure onset zone (SOZ) in epilepsy, their clinical application is hindered by the challenge of automated elimination of pseudo-HFOs originating from artifacts in heavily corrupted intraoperative neural recordings. This limitation has led to a reliance on semi-automated detectors, coupled with manual visual artifact rejection, impeding the translation of findings into clinical practice.
METHODS: In response, we have developed a computational framework that integrates sparse signal processing and ensemble learning to automatically detect genuine HFOs of intracranial EEG data. This …
Exploring How Personal And Program Characteristics Inform The Experiences Of Engineering Students Abroad, Kirsten A. Davis, David B. Knight
Exploring How Personal And Program Characteristics Inform The Experiences Of Engineering Students Abroad, Kirsten A. Davis, David B. Knight
School of Engineering Education Faculty Publications
Background
As more universities seek to offer international experiences for engineering students, it is important to design such programs to effectively support student learning abroad. Previous research on study abroad has focused on a limited number of outcomes and therefore failed to consider the diversity of experiences students may have in the same program and the range of learning outcomes they may develop while abroad.
Purpose
We explored student experiences across multiple types of engineering study abroad programs to address the research question: How do the types of significant experiences students highlighted from their time abroad differ based on student …

BACKGROUND: Prolonged exposure to hyperoxia can lead to hyperoxic acute lung injury (HALI) in preterm neonates. Vitamin D (VitD) stimulates lung maturation and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. Our objective was to determine if VitD provides a dose-dependent protective effect against HALI by reducing inflammatory cytokine expression and improving alveolarization and lung function in neonatal mice.
METHODS: C57BL/6 mouse neonates were randomized and placed in room air or hyperoxic (85% O
RESULTS: Neonatal mice treated with VitD in hyperoxic conditions had improved weight gain, reduced pulmonary edema and increased alveolar surface area compared to untreated pups in hyperoxia. No significant …

Medulloblastoma (MB) is the most common malignant brain tumour in children. The Sonic Hedgehog (SHH)-medulloblastoma subtype arises from the cerebellar granule neuron lineage. Terminally differentiated neurons are incapable of undergoing further cell division, so an effective treatment for this tumour could be to force neuronal differentiation. Differentiation therapy provides a potential alternative for patients with medulloblastoma who harbor mutations that impair cell death pathways (TP53), which is associated a with high mortality. To this end, our goal was to explore epigenetic regulation of cerebellar granule neuron differentiation in medulloblastoma cells. Key regulators were discovered using chromatin immunoprecipitation with high-throughput sequencing. …

The pandemic refocused interest on the burden of depression across the lifespan; the increased efforts to prevent and treat depression are now a priority of health care systems, insurers, patient advocates, digital therapeutic engineers, telemedicine platforms, and community health agencies. However, the challenges of treating depression to remission in adult patients who do not respond to first, second, or third levels of oral pharmacotherapy remain. The increased prevalence of these conditions is at odds with the shrinking psychiatric workforce. Since addressing difficult to treat depression is situated in a rapidly evolving treatment landscape, The University of Arizona College of Medicine-Tucson …

A Systematic Review Of The Effects Of Ai-Assisted Moderation On Individuals And Groups, Zehui Yu, Lukas Otto, Dennis Assenmacher, Claudia Wagner
Human-Machine Communication
This review paper provides a conceptualization of AI-assisted content moderation with various degrees of autonomy and summarizes experimental evidence for how different levels of automation in content moderation and related losses of autonomy affect individuals and groups. Our results show that current research predominantly focuses on individuallevel effects, necessitating a shift toward understanding the impact on groups. The study highlights gaps in exploring different levels of AI-assisted moderation interventions and misalignments of different conceptualizations that make comparing research results difficult. The discussion underscores the prevailing emphasis on harmful content removal and advocates for investigating more constructive moderation techniques, emphasizing the …

The nested doll structure of the various notes, commentary, drafts, and ancillary texts published alongside the main text of the "Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth" demonstrate both the depth (and challenges) of Christopher Tolkien's 'History of Middle-earth' collection, especially as they connect with the "Tale of Adanel."
Giorgio Agamben's Analysis Of The Mechanism Of Exclusion Or The Logic Of Sovereign Power, Georges De Schrijver
Giorgio Agamben's Analysis Of The Mechanism Of Exclusion Or The Logic Of Sovereign Power, Georges De Schrijver
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
In Homo sacer: Sovereign Power and Bare Life, Giorgio Agamben extends Michel Foucault’s notion of biopolitics to include life, stripped bare, that is placed completely at the mercy of the powers that be. For him, the biopolitical paradigm is no longer the asylum but the concentration camp. Agamben drew the inspiration for this shift from Walter Benjamin, who decades ago had observed that the state of exception favored by the Nazi jurist Carl Schmitt had become the rule. Certain strata of the population, in this case the Jewish citizens in Germany, were abandoned by the law while continuing to fall …
Pusong Mamon: Nel Noddings's Care Ethics In The Filipino Educational Setting, Noelle Leslie Dela Cruz
Pusong Mamon: Nel Noddings's Care Ethics In The Filipino Educational Setting, Noelle Leslie Dela Cruz
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
This paper evaluates Nel Noddings’s view of moral education in the context of teaching in a Philippine university. It first presents the key aspects of Noddings’s ethical theory, identifying her three strategic moves as follows: the dissolution of the public/private split, the replacement of justice-based punishment system with a caring system, and the promotion of care work as the core of education itself. Through a discussion of two cases of academic dishonesty, the author assesses the merits of these strategies and recommends a re-conceptualization both of care ethics and the existing educational paradigm.

Reiner SchüRmann And The Challenge Of Christian Trinitarian Thought, Jefferson M. Chua
Reiner SchüRmann And The Challenge Of Christian Trinitarian Thought, Jefferson M. Chua
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Reiner Schürmann speaks of the end of Western metaphysics as the end of a mode of thinking that relies on an overriding metaphysical principle that establishes the economies that provide the space for permissible and impermissible actions. In its wake, he proposes a project of an-archy, of living without the reliance to the domination of one central metaphysical concept, but rather of kata physin, of “following the way things enter into mutual relations.” Kenneth Schmitz, in reacting to Schürmann, points out that there are elements in Christian thought that can also provide new patterns of thought and action at the …
Becoming-Religion: Re-/Thinking Religion With A.N. Whitehead And Keiji Nishitani, Kenneth C. Masong
Becoming-Religion: Re-/Thinking Religion With A.N. Whitehead And Keiji Nishitani, Kenneth C. Masong
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
For Whitehead and Nishitani, a rethinking of religion necessitates a rethinking of the metaphysics that underlie one’s concept of religion. The dynamism of religion is unveiled only within the metaphysical grounding of an ontology that accommodates the philosophical preference of “becoming” as an ultimate category of reality. The novelty of Whitehead’s theory of religion lies in the process metaphysics that is presupposes. For him, religion, like the whole of reality, is inherently developing and evolving. What Nishitani offers is a rethinking of Western understanding of religion by way of an Asian speculative approach grounded in Zen Buddhism. He argues that …
An Inquiry Into The Historical Development Of Philosophy In Japan, Kelly Louise Rexzy P. Agra
An Inquiry Into The Historical Development Of Philosophy In Japan, Kelly Louise Rexzy P. Agra
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
What is Japanese Philosophy? This paper will address this question, not by giving a survey of the works of Japanese philosophers or a definition of the subject matter of Japanese philosophy, but by attempting to present how it emerged as a distinct philosophical tradition—by sketching the controversies that gave rise to its formation; the social, intellectual, and historical factors that paved the way to its development; and the revolution of thought which finally gave it the title “Japanese philosophy.” I will argue that Japanese philosophy was born not because Japanese thinkers desperately wanted a philosophy that they could call their …
Creating A Homemade Mobile Augmented Reality Game In A Community College Library: An Open Source Approach, Carrie Jedlicka, Mark E. Eaton
Creating A Homemade Mobile Augmented Reality Game In A Community College Library: An Open Source Approach, Carrie Jedlicka, Mark E. Eaton
Publications and Research
Librarians at Kingsborough Community College created a mobile augmented reality activity for new students, to orient them to the library space and to provide a fun, welcoming experience. Rather than using a commercial app, the librarians built the activity using open source tools and resources already at-hand, specifically AR.js and A-Frame (both JavaScript libraries), and LibGuides. Based on student feedback, librarians found that participants enjoyed the activity and that it helped familiarize them with library locations and services. This project demonstrates that librarians have the capacity to build their own open source augmented reality activities in-house.

Bound States And Particle Production By Breather-Type Background Field Configurations, Abhishek Rout, Brett Altschul
Bound States And Particle Production By Breather-Type Background Field Configurations, Abhishek Rout, Brett Altschul
Faculty Publications
We investigate the interaction of fermion fields with oscillating domain walls, inspired by breather-type solutions of the sine-Gordon equation, a nonlinear system of fundamental importance. Our study focuses on the fermionic bound states and particle production induced by a time-dependent scalar background field. The fermions couple to two domain walls undergoing harmonic motion, and we explore the resulting dynamics of the fermionic wave functions. We demonstrate that while fermions initially form bound states around the domain walls, the energy provided by the oscillatory motion of the scalar field induces an outward flux of fermions and antifermions, leading to particle production …

Antecedents And Outcomes Of Big Data Adoption In Supply Chain, Alok Raj, Rajeev Ranjan Kumar, Anand Jeyaraj
Management Information Systems Faculty Publications
This paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the big data–performance relationship based on the existing empirical evidence. Using a meta-analysis approach, big data adoption (BDA) related 446 effect sizes reported in 133 prior empirical studies were gathered from 118848 informants in more than 30 countries. Results confirm ten significant antecedents and eight outcomes of BDA based on identified literature. We further estimate the heterogeneity based on subgroup analysis by considering two types of moderators as (a)economic regions (developed vs developing), and (b) type of industry. We find that organizations in developed countries adopt big data largely due to …
