Rules And Roles In The Political Economy Of Peatland Fires In Ketapang, West Kalimantan, Indonesia, Ali Yansyah Abdurrahim, Atiek Widayati, Edi Purwanto, Meine Van Noordwijk

Forest and Society

Peatland fires in Indonesia represent a critical socio-ecological system failure, generating transboundary haze, biodiversity loss, and severe human health impacts. In Ketapang Regency, West Kalimantan, the persistence of fires illustrates the tensions between protection and production in the local political economy. On the one hand, peatlands are legally designated for conservation under national regulations and regional initiatives, such as Regulation No. 48/2023 on peatland fire prevention. On the other hand, they remain under sustained pressure from the expansion of palm oil, transmigration schemes, and local livelihood needs. This study applies a political economy (stakes) and political ecology (status-power) lens to …

New American Women (Immigrants And Refugees) In Utah, Robyn C. Blackburn, Vanessa Tuttle, Yvette Young, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

Year after year, the topic of immigration features centrally in US public policy discussions and debates. This focus is not surprising, given that the US is home to more immigrants than any other country in the world. While policy discussions often focus on immigrants who lack legal authorization to be in the US, most immigrants are legal residents (77.0%).1 An immigrant is any person who lives in a country that is not their country of usual residence or nationality.2 The US immigrant population includes naturalized citizens (i.e., those who entered the US legally and became citizens), lawful permanent …

Multiscale Optical Imaging: From Single-Molecule Dynamics To Tissue-Scale Mechanics, Weiyan Zhou Jun 2026

Multiscale Optical Imaging: From Single-Molecule Dynamics To Tissue-Scale Mechanics, Weiyan Zhou

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

Biological systems exhibit hierarchical organization spanning molecular to tissue scales. Molecular orientation and supramolecular packing define nanoscale architecture, while collective organization of these constituents contributes to emergent mechanical and dynamical behavior at the tissue level. Although optical imaging provides access to both regimes, modalities are typically optimized for a single scale and often emphasize qualitative visualization rather than quantitative measurement. Establishing rigorous frameworks for extracting physical parameters from optical signals and articulating conceptual continuity across scales remains a central challenge. This dissertation advances optical imaging as a quantitative measurement technology through the development of complementary approaches at the nanoscale and …

Revisiting Representation Learning For Natural Language Processing From The Fundamentals For Misinformation Detection, Vishnu S. Pendyala Jun 2026

Revisiting Representation Learning For Natural Language Processing From The Fundamentals For Misinformation Detection, Vishnu S. Pendyala

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

While existing language embeddings achieve high accuracy on benchmark tasks, recent studies suggest they often struggle to distinguish true from false statements. This work argues that new representation learning and aggregation strategies are needed, especially those that adapt to misinformation's evolving patterns and incorporate explainability. As a first step, we explore two directions: (1) aggregation strategies inspired by signal processing, where word embeddings are transformed into spectrogram-like representations for classification to overcome context window limitations, and (2) future extensions using dynamic neural architectures such as Neural ODEs, Liquid Time-Constant Networks (LTCs), Kolmogorov-Arnold Networks (KANs), and Legendre Memory Units (LMUs). Preliminary …

Getting Close, Sadie Laufe Mccarthy Jun 2026

Getting Close, Sadie Laufe Mccarthy

Dissertations and Theses

"Getting Close" is a collection of short pieces, some fiction and some memoir. It's not important which is which.

I'm interested in the barriers we face when it comes to connection, and how aloneness can often be more sensual than togetherness. I'm interested in the places we find respite from the pain of existing within societal pressures.

I'm not interested in acceptability. I write toward a world in which we do not have to be anything other than ourselves.

Growing Pains: The Loss Of Plasticity To Extreme Anoxia In Developing Embryos Of Austrofundulus Limnaeus, Patrick Ryan Clouser

Dissertations and Theses

Oxygen plays a pivotal role for most animal life on Earth, so much so that even short exposures to no oxygen, anoxia, can have severe effects on the animal's wellbeing. Conversely, aerobic recovery after anoxic insult can be just as detrimental. Some animals are the exception to this rule and demonstrate survival through anoxia and recovery. There has been a great deal of research around anoxia tolerant animals, but what remains unclear are the genetic underpinnings that determine the anoxia tolerant phenotype. RNA sequencing allows for the quantification of RNA transcripts within a sample, which can indicate if a gene …

Houselessness has long been an issue of pressing concern in the United States; and in Multnomah County, Oregon, approximately 10,526 people are experiencing houselessness. Social support has been identified as a critical factor in helping people navigate houselessness and will be explored in the current study. Specifically, the current study examines social support among populations with lived experience of houselessness as they navigate pathways through houselessness. The current study is situated within a broader study examining journeys through houselessness called the Pathways study, and it utilizes a subsample of individuals involved in the Pathways study. The Pathways study and the …

The Aggregated Latent Profile Index: Measuring Person Profile Differentiation Within A Bootstrap-Validated Latent Profile Space, Se-Kang Kim Jun 2026

The Aggregated Latent Profile Index: Measuring Person Profile Differentiation Within A Bootstrap-Validated Latent Profile Space, Se-Kang Kim

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Multivariate assessment profiles contain two conceptually distinct sources of variation: overall level and profile shape. Existing approaches recover some aspects of this structure, but none jointly establishes the replicability of latent pattern dimensions and provides a principled, population-referenced summary of person profile differentiation independent of overall level. We introduce the Aggregated Latent Profile Index (ALPI), a variance-weighted Euclidean distance that quantifies the degree to which an individual’s profile departs from a flat population reference within a bootstrap-validated latent profile space. ALPI is derived from the Aggregated Latent Profile Space (ALPS), a framework that combines parallel analysis with bootstrap stability diagnostics …

Intersectional Inequalities In College Savings And Educational Outcomes Across Race/Ethnicity, Immigrant Status, And Gender: A Quant-Crit Analysis, Jason Jabbari, Ibrahim Habiba, Mat Despard, Somalis Chy Jun 2026

Intersectional Inequalities In College Savings And Educational Outcomes Across Race/Ethnicity, Immigrant Status, And Gender: A Quant-Crit Analysis, Jason Jabbari, Ibrahim Habiba, Mat Despard, Somalis Chy

Journal of Student Financial Aid

As families use savings to further their children’s education, education serves as both a key driver of wealth and an artifact of wealth itself. Despite these cyclical relationships and the ways in which education and wealth are stratified across gender, race/ethnicity, and immigration, there is little intersectional research exploring these relationships. We employ a quantitative critical approach and leverage the first nationally representative longitudinal survey that includes information on high school achievement, college savings, borrowing, college enrollment, and major of study. We first demonstrate how race-gender and immigrant-gender intersectional groups experience disadvantages in college savings and in educational outcomes. We …

Tel Shor: Jewelry, Dress And Cosmetic Articles From Three Persian Burials, Amir Golani, Eli Yannai

Qadum: Journal of Excavation Reports from Israel

The excavation northwest of Tel Shor exposed the partial remains of a Persian-period cemetery. Within the burial site were three intact tombs, two belonging to adult females and one to a child of undetermined sex. The burial goods include a rich corpus of jewelry, comprising earrings and finger rings, pendants, beads for necklaces and a few dress and cosmetic articles. The good state of preservation of the tombs allowed the funerary items to be studied in their archaeological context. Two of the tombs were exceptionally rich in finds, indicating the high social status of the deceased.
