“Democracy,” Usa, Marc Edelman Jan 2025

“Democracy,” Usa, Marc Edelman

Publications and Research

What does it mean to be an effective citizen in a democracy? Answering this question requires unpacking “democracy” and an analysis of institutions that systematically disempower and alienate citizens. This paper briefly examines the contributions of psychoanalysis to understanding democracy and authoritarianism. It scrutinizes U.S. governance institutions and points to democratic deficits and backsliding present even before Trump 1.0 and 2.0. These range from the Electoral College, the Senate, and the Supreme Court to the Federal Communications Commission. All contributed to institutionalizing minority rule and elite capture. Governance institutions failed to deliver what the American people tell opinion pollsters they …

Electricity Theft Detection With An Adaptive Deep Learning Architecture, Mohammed Sleiman, Cihan Dagli, Rui Bo

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Electricity theft presents a significant challenge to the power industry. This paper demonstrates an adaptive deep framework integrating dimensionality reduction, graph modeling, attention mechanisms, and dynamic feature refinement for improving theft detection. Principal Component Analysis squeezes consumption data while an Autoencoder extracts latent representations and denoises the input. A Gated Graph Convolutional Neural Network uses k-Nearest Neighbors to model local relationships, while Transformers capture long range global dependencies. Neural Ordinary Differential Equations then refine features over continuous time, improving adaptability to complex patterns. The framework achieves 94.01% accuracy with stratified 5-fold cross validation. However, class imbalance challenges the minority class …

Multimodal Deception Detection Via Audio-Text Fusion With Deep Learning And Asr, Xiangyi Li Jan 2025

Multimodal Deception Detection Via Audio-Text Fusion With Deep Learning And Asr, Xiangyi Li

Master's Projects

Emotion detection plays a crucial role in human-computer interaction, enabling machines to recognize and respond appropriately to human emotional states. This project explores a two-stage approach to emotion detection using multimodal data, first predicting dimensional values (Arousal, Valence, Dominance) from textual and audio inputs, then mapping these representations to discrete emotion categories. We compare this approach with direct categorical classification using transformer-based language models like BERT, RoBERTa, and DeBERTa for text processing, alongside various audio feature extraction methods, including MFCCs and spectrograms. Using the IEMOCAP dataset, we evaluate both approaches across text-only, audio-only, and multimodal configurations. Our findings reveal that …

Toward A Combine-Style Approach To Predicting Future Esports Success, Nicholas David Bowman, Kevin Sweeney, Aaron R. Seitz, C. Shawn Green

Media Studies - Open-Access Faculty Scholarship

Historically, there has been a great deal of interest in using basicmeasures of individual difference factors to predict future success in traditional sports. For instance, the National Football League (NFL) holds a scouting combine each year prior to the NFL draft during which a host of attributes about players are measured, from basic height and weight, to sprint speed, to jumping capacity, to strength. Even among an already highly selected group of individuals (i.e., individuals skilled enough to even be considered for the NFL), such measures have been seen to have some degree of utility in predicting future performance. The …

Annotated 3d Point Cloud Dataset For Traffic Management In Simulated Urban Intersections, Elham Binshaflout, Chaima Zaghouani, Nawfal Guefrachi, Charalampos Antoniadis, Hakim Ghazzai, Ahmad Alsharoa, Gianluca Setti

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ensuring accurate traffic perception and road safety in complex urban environments remains a significant challenge. Advanced traffic monitoring increasingly relies on deep learning, which requires large data volumes. However, existing datasets are often limited to CCTV video footage or focus on dynamic scenarios captured by sensors mounted on ego vehicles. This narrow perspective reduces the effectiveness of comprehensive traffic monitoring, particularly for LiDAR sensors, which typically capture only the vehicle's viewpoint and miss critical areas such as intersections and pedestrian crossings. To address these limitations, we propose a holistic strategy for rapid data collection in urban settings using simulated 3D …

Cultural Coordinates Of Credibility And Sticky Scripts: Womaning Versus Lawyering In The Indian Legal System, Bhumika Billa

Socio-Legal Review

Based on a multimodal and empirical analysis, the article presents Indian women (identifying) lawyers’ lived experiences of epistemic injustice at the sites of legal work in Delhi. The analysis brings a painting, a short film, and 15 semi-structured interviews in conversation with each other to understand women lawyers’ shared experiences of being perceived as “less credible,” and the strategies they have been adopting to assert credibility. The theoretical contribution can be captured by three key arguments. First, using Arpita Singh’s painting, ‘My Lollipop City: Gemini Rising, 2005,’ I argue that the Indian legal system has a “sense of” Delhi. …

Background: Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common malignant brain tumor with an abysmal prognosis. Since complete tumor cell removal is impossible due to the infiltrative nature of GBM, accurate measurement is paramount for GBM assessment. Preoperative magnetic resonance images (MRIs) are crucial for initial diagnosis and surgical planning, while follow-up MRIs are vital for evaluating treatment response. The structural changes in the brain caused by surgical and therapeutic measures create significant differences between preoperative and follow-up MRIs. In clinical research, advanced deep learning models trained on preoperative MRIs are often applied to assess follow-up scans, but their effectiveness in this …
