Middle-Level Teachers’ Attitudes On Disciplinary Literacy Instruction In The Non-Ela Classroom, Katherine E. Bowers

Dissertations

The persistent gaps in student achievement, particularly in the context of discipline-specific literacy skills, across public schools in the United States continue to widen. With a focus on South Carolina, this study investigates how professional development efforts have sought to address these gaps and enhance literacy instruction. Despite many initiatives, testing scores and teacher perceptions reveal limited progress in literacy outcomes. The study discusses a key challenge: the lack of substantial literacy instruction beyond English language arts (ELA) classes, resulting in a growing disparity between literacy mastery and the current reality. The research acknowledges the existence of literacy-focused professional development …

Nirsa Student Referees: Exploring The Connection Between Sense Of Community And Positive Health And Well-Being Outcomes, Jacob K. Tingle

School of Business Faculty Research

Despite working in complex environments, which require managing antagonistic and abusive relationships, sport referees are essential to ensure fair and safe competition. Evidence suggests officiating can positively impact well-being and officiating communities provide social support. Despite those positives, there remains a shortage of qualified officials, which is compounded by aging referee populations. These concerns emphasize the need to attract young people and examine well-being benefits resulting from involvement in officiating communities. As such, the aim of this study is to help NIRSA professionals better understand how the community or social networks made through officiating intramural sports could better support student …

Empowering Young Learners From Diverse Economic Backgrounds, Tonya Wilson-Story

Graduate Research Papers

This paper explores the importance and benefits of empowering young learners from diverse economic backgrounds through goal setting, specifically focusing on students enrolled in an urban school serving a highly diverse population. Over time, students have changed neurologically and behaviorally—shaped in part by the influence of technology, which has affected how they process information and maintain attention. As a result, today’s students learn differently than in previous generations. Research shows that many young learners now enter school with only half the vocabulary of their middle-class peers (Wentzel, 2020), underscoring the urgent need for new instructional approaches that effectively engage and …

Elementary Teachers’ Experiences Of Implementing Culturally Responsive And Inclusive Education In New York State, Grace Pai

Publications and Research

Many states in the United States have adopted culturally responsive sustaining education (CRSE) as a pedagogical framework to promote inclusive education and positive student outcomes for all students, including those from marginalized groups. Yet there is a paucity of knowledge on teachers’ attitudes towards and experiences of implementing these initiatives. This study draws on survey data to explore how urban and rural/suburban elementary school teachers across the state of New York understand and implement the state’s CRSE framework. Results show that although CRSE is not necessarily a top priority of many schools across the state, teachers generally have positive perceptions …

Climate Change And Parenthood: Impact On Family Size Decision-Making, Minha Hossain, Jennifer Lai, Mindy Engle-Friedman

Publications and Research

This study explores how parental status relates to childbearing decisions in the context of climate change and builds on prior research linking climate anxiety to reduced family size intentions. A survey of 114 participants revealed that non-parents were significantly more likely than parents to plan to have fewer children and to express concerns about climate change. These findings underscore differences in how parents and non-parents approach future reproductive decisions and highlight the role of climate-related concerns in shaping family planning intentions.

Project Portfolio: Strengthening Marital Bonding In Indonesian Christian Spouses Through A Contextually Designed Marriage Enrichment Retreat Curriculum, Dinka Nehemia Utomo

Doctor of Leadership

Numerous couples in our local church struggle to maintain their marital commitment and longing helps to overcome marriage hurdles. Regrettably, the denominations in our context, have not developed a coherent plan or roadmap for empowering and enriching married couples. While serving as a pastor, I witnessed countless couples in many congregations dealing with marital troubles in solitude without the required support from the church. I started developing a curriculum to satisfy this requirement in response to this circumstance. This project seeks to strengthen marital commitment, increase intimacy, and promote harmonious and loving relationships by applying biblical principles. A Marriage Enrichment …

Additionally, for many years I have served as a coach and consultant to pastors, church planters, and executives primarily in the nonprofit space. PCOM Psychology Dissertations

This study investigated the relationships among acculturation, self-esteem, family norms, and disordered eating behaviors among South Asian women living in the United States. Although research suggests culture plays a role in the etiology of eating disorders, little information on the experiences of South Asian women exists. This study sought to fill this gap in the literature. Using a cross-sectional, quantitative survey-based design, 151 South Asian women provided insight into their experiences with family norms, acculturation, self-esteem, and eating behaviors. Results indicated that acculturation was not significantly associated with disordered eating. However, self-esteem was found to be negatively associated with disordered …

The Role Of Teacher Engagement In Enhancing Children’S Organizational Skills: A School-Based Intervention Study, Brooke Goldsmith

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Executive functioning skills, including organization, time management, and planning (OTMP), are critical for an individual across the lifespan. Deficits in these skills can negatively impact academic achievement, social-emotional functioning, and future occupational opportunities and satisfaction. Organizational Skills Training (OST) interventions have been shown to improve OTMP skills in children, however, less is known about the role of teacher engagement in supporting these interventions. The current study examined the relationship between teacher engagement in a school-based Organizational Skills Training-Tier 2 program (OST-T2), and improvements in student organizational skills outcome. Using case studies of the International Business Company, the Limited Liability Company, the Protected Cell Company, and advances in trust law and applying the theoretical frameworks of social scientist Richard Florida and psychologist Mihalyi Csikszentmihalyi, this article illustrates how IFCs serve as laboratories for financial experimentation, generating widely …

Lambat Asal Selamat: The Slow But Safe Twenty-Five Year Recalibration Of Personal Bankruptcy In Malaysia, Jason J. Kilborn Jan 2025

Lambat Asal Selamat: The Slow But Safe Twenty-Five Year Recalibration Of Personal Bankruptcy In Malaysia, Jason J. Kilborn

South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business

A popular Malay proverb advises, “[L]et it be slow, as long as it is safe” (biar lambat asal[kan] selamat),1 combining the sentiments of two similar English proverbs: “haste makes waste,” and “slow and steady wins the race.” These principles certainly seem to have guided Malaysian lawmakers in the quarter-century, multistage development of the most important element of modern bankruptcy law: the discharge. Adopted in 1967,2 Malaysian bankruptcy law has long included a very limited debt discharge, but as it left more and more economically debilitated debtors in perpetual bankruptcy limbo, policymakers became dissatisfied with leaving a huge and growing mass …

Background

Preterm birth is a highly stressful experience for both parents and infants. Parental participation in care enhances developmental outcomes, fosters parent-infant interactions and builds parental confidence. However, low parental adherence has always been a challenge in the successful implementation of intervention programs both in the NICU and at home. It is imperative to understand parents' perspectives and view the challenges that they experience through their lens while providing early intervention to their infants born preterm. This study is aimed at identifying new parents' challenges when implementing early intervention programs for their infants during the transition from hospital to home. …

A Comparison Of Informal Choral Singing Experiences, Christopher Powell Jan 2025

A Comparison Of Informal Choral Singing Experiences, Christopher Powell

Theses and Dissertations--Music

A traditional choir relies on the interest and participation of the population in communal singing. However, drawing willing participants into a traditional choir program can often prove challenging to music educators, community choir directors, and leaders of religious music programs. One of the most prevalent informal singing groups in the USA is Sacred Harp. Sacred Harp “singings” have been around since the early years of The Sacred Harp itself. These singings occur regularly in multiple locations across the country and around the world. These events have an open atmosphere and, despite the mostly Christian material, have no expectation of a …

Designing An Undergraduate Opera Workshop Curriculum For Universities, Christopher L. Burchett

Theses and Dissertations--Music

The world of opera is quickly evolving to keep pace with the other arts forms of film, television and Broadway theater. For many years the genre had been reluctant to change with the times and update the skills of their performers. Those days have passed. Today’s operatic performers must be better actors, better movers and more theatrically efficient with their overall skill set in addition to having the secured singing technique that has for so long been the top priority. Universities must take ownership of this training.

Today’s university opera workshop programs must be more than they have been in …

Performance Guide To Select Twentieth-Century French Organ Works Based On Te Deum, Margaret Maria Lerose

Theses and Dissertations--Music

The Gregorian chant Te Deum originated over 1500 years ago and was the basis of many vocal and instrumental compositions. Segments of the chant were also used as motives and themes for improvisation. Students at the French organ school studied both improvisation and composition. This study examined three exemplary pieces that resulted from the French organ school traditions: Improvisation sur le Te Deum (1930) by Charles Tournemire, Hymne d’Actions de Grâces, Te Deum (1934) by Jean Langlais, and Paraphrase sur le Te Deum (1946) by Marcel Dupré.

After a brief chapter on the history of the Te Deum chant, biographical …
