Conceptualizing And Operationalizing Equity In School District Strategic Planning: From Paper To Practice To Performance, Joshua T. Fraser

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This qualitative document analysis examined how five school districts in a major metropolitan area in the Midwest conceptualize and operationalize equity in their strategic planning documents, and the extent to which their stated intentions align with measurable outcomes. Grounded in Critical Race Theory, particularly the concepts of racism's permanence and interest convergence, the study analyzed 67 documents, including strategic plans, board materials, achievement data, and policy documents collected between May and June 2025. Through systematic three-phase coding informed by critical discourse analysis, four distinct equity approach typologies emerged: Transformative Anti-Racist, Liberal Excellence, Individual Achievement, and Resource Equity. Findings reveal that …

Ripples: An Automated Embedding Generation Algorithm For The Forward-Forward Algorithm, Spencer Connolly

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

The Forward-Forward algorithm (FF) is yet another novel invention by Geoffrey Hinton, the creator of the famous backpropagation algorithm (BP). Since its proposal, many papers have been published exploring its potential, and good progress has been made in increasing its viability. Though FF continually falls short of BP, its purpose is not to replace BP and preliminary research shows that there is plenty of room for growth. In this paper, we present a literature review for FF algorithms applied to Convolution Neural Networks (CNN) for image classification tasks and set the stage for applying FF to more complex datasets. The …

The Process And Significance Of Convening A Community Advisory Board With Individuals With Severe Mental Illness, Jacelyn Biondo, Nia Johnson Jan 2025

The Process And Significance Of Convening A Community Advisory Board With Individuals With Severe Mental Illness, Jacelyn Biondo, Nia Johnson

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Individuals with lived experience of being diagnosed with severe mental illness and/or substance use disorders have deep and profound knowledge regarding the culture and needs of their community. Historically, these and other vulnerable populations have been excluded from care access, treatment insights, research development and participation, and often society in general. In this paper, we share our experience of convening a community advisory board with vulnerable populations and highlight the expertise these community members provide. We outline our processes of convening the community advisory board, engaging in collaborative meetings, revising the research protocol, and exploring future research needs. Using meeting …

The Rise And Fall Of Ambulatory Baselines In The Law Of The Sea, Sean Murphy Jan 2025

The Rise And Fall Of Ambulatory Baselines In The Law Of The Sea, Sean Murphy

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

Traditionally, it has been understood under the law of the sea that baselines are ambulatory; that they move in association with any progression or regression of the physical coast. More recently, however, relevant State practice, the work of bodies such as the International Law Commission and the International Law Association, and in particular the 2025 advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice on climate change, have all indicated that baselines are not necessarily ambulatory, at least not in the context of physical changes resulting from climate-change related sea level rise. Rather, while a State must establish baselines in accordance …

An Evaluation Of The Decline In Primary Care Physician Visits, 2010 To 2021, Anuradha Jetty, Marie Ezran, Alison Huffstetler, Yalda Jabbarpour

Department of Family & Community Medicine Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: Primary care is the backbone of the United States healthcare system, yet it continues to be underfunded and inaccessible to many. Previous studies explored primary care visit patterns until 2016, leaving gaps in our understanding of how recent factors like state Medicaid expansions, the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, and population growth have influenced these patterns. Hence, the objective of the current study was to analyze the trends in primary care visits provided by outpatient clinicians over time and by visit type and contextualize study findings within the changing healthcare landscape.

METHODS: The Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data (2010-2021) …

Taxing Torts Today And Tomorrow, Steven J. Willis Jan 2025

Taxing Torts Today And Tomorrow, Steven J. Willis

UF Law Faculty Publications

This article shows how tax law has long subsidized tortfeasors, often to the detriment of victims. Changes in the 1980s reduced the tortfeasor subsidy but did not eliminate it. The article shows how various changes which purported to help victims have, in practical terms, helped tortfeasors.

The article first covers the pre-1985 tax history of making torts profitable. The resulting financial incentives triggered multiple legal changes, which the article outlines prior to covering them in depth. The statutory issues involve Internal Revenue Code sections 104 (allowing victims to exclude personal physical injury payments from income); 130 (purporting to facilitate structured …

Drafting In The Digital Age: Contract-Design And Web-Based Consumer Contracts, Ben Fernandez Jan 2025

Drafting In The Digital Age: Contract-Design And Web-Based Consumer Contracts, Ben Fernandez

UF Law Faculty Publications

Consumers often do not read the contracts they sign. They know the basic terms of the deal and take the risk that it is enough to avoid being sued for breach. Even sophisticated businesspeople often do not read the documents they sign; they rely on their attorneys to tell them what they need to know. If the sole purpose of documenting a contract is to protect the party that has the financial resources and the leverage to hire an attorney to draft it, then the attorney doesn’t do their client a disservice by focusing solely on the contract’s enforceability. A …

Dead Infants And Taking The Fifth, Tracey Maclin Jan 2025

Dead Infants And Taking The Fifth, Tracey Maclin

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Essay offers tribute to Professor Colb's teachings and insights expressed in her writings on the Court's Miranda and Self-Incrimination Clause rulings. Since the start of the twenty-first century, Professor Colb wrote many blogs on the Court's Miranda doctrine. Miranda v. Arizona famously held that persons under arrest must be warned of their right to silence and to have counsel's advice before being subject to interrogation. Generally speaking, Professor Colb was critical of the Court's results and reasoning—for good reason.

As someone who supports a broad interpretation of the Fifth Amendment, I offer a counterview of Professor Colb's conception of …

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

North of the Arctic Circle in far northwestern Alaska, Kobuk Valley National Park is a remote, roadless protected area transected by the Kobuk River—one of the northernmost salmon-bearing rivers in North America. Characterized by tundra, taiga, and the dramatic 25-square-mile Great Kobuk Sand Dunes, the park serves as a critical pathway for nearly half a million migrating caribou. Significant archaeological sites have been documented along the Kobuk River, demonstrating thousands of years of human settlement, fishing, caribou hunting, and many other cultural activities. At the time of European contact, and into the early 20th century, there were still Iñupiaq “Eskimo” …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have momentum-analyzed electrons and recoil ions in triple coincidence with projectiles neutralized in 300-keV Si-+Ar collisions. The experiment was performed at a cryogenic ion storage ring with an in-ring reaction microscope. Differential momentum distributions for detachment with simultaneous target ionization were obtained. At more than 15% of the detachment-only rate the ionization rate is surprisingly large. A correlated two-electron channel is found to be dominant. This is also unexpected because the projectile energy is well below the threshold for the correlated process.

Creative pedagogy in the K–6 classroom is being increasingly recognized as an essential tool for increasing student engagement, practicing critical thinking, and fostering higher-order learning. However, research gaps in creative pedagogy are contextualized accounts of teacher thinking, planning, and enactment of strategies for student creativity. This study explored the lived experiences of teachers as they constructed and enacted creative lesson adaptations and how they identified and supported creative behaviors in students. An interpretative phenomenological analysis was employed, involving semi-structured think-aloud and stimulated recall interviews with five K–6 teachers who consistently adapt instruction to promote student creativity. Findings revealed that; (a) …

Benefits Of Nature-Based Play For Children: An Educational Resource For Parents, Kaitlyn Peterson Jan 2025

Benefits Of Nature-Based Play For Children: An Educational Resource For Parents, Kaitlyn Peterson

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Background: In recent years, children’s use of technology has increased, decreasing the time they spend playing in natural contexts and time spent building the parent-child relationship. The lack of time spent in outdoor contexts has negative influences on the child’s overall health and well-being. The time a child spends with their parent is vitally important for a child’s development, view of the world, and sense of belonging. Parents assist children throughout development by supporting their understanding of themselves and the world, along with supporting the child’s ability to communicate with their parents. Interactions with technology, particularly overuse, can influence a …

Increasing Occupational Therapy Student Preparedness For Level Ii Fieldwork Experiences In Hand Therapy, Claire Meyer Jan 2025

Increasing Occupational Therapy Student Preparedness For Level Ii Fieldwork Experiences In Hand Therapy, Claire Meyer

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Background: A level II fieldwork experience is essential within occupational therapy programs as it allows occupational therapy students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-life practice. Students need to complete level II fieldwork to graduate, become practicing therapists, and grow the field of occupational therapy. However, many practitioners, particularly those specializing in hand therapy, hesitate to accept students for fieldwork placements. Barriers reported by hand therapy practitioners include a lack of student knowledge, preparation, and clinical skills (Short et al., 2017; Valdes et al., 2022). Hand therapy settings' rapid pace and demanding nature require students to …

From Backlash To Brand Loyalty: How Self-Congruity And Generation Shape Consumer Intentions After A Failed Influencer Campaign, Dexter L. Purnell, Kimberly V. Legocki, Steven R. Barnes, Jessica Chapman

Atlantic Marketing Journal

This study examines consumer responses to corporate social advocacy (CSA) surrounding Bud Light’s partnership with transgender influencer Dylan Mulvaney. We fielded a cross-sectional survey of U.S. beer drinkers (N = 386) measuring actual and ideal self-congruity, generational cohort, and purchase intention. Using PROCESS Model 4 with bootstrap confidence intervals, we tested whether self-congruity mediates the relationship between generation and purchase intention. Self-congruity strongly predicted purchase intention, and indirect effects of generation via both actual and ideal self-congruity were statistically significant. Conditional (contrast-specific) indirect effects were observed only for Gen X, indicating cohort-specific pathways from CSA to purchase intention through identity …
