'A Little Knowledge Is A Dangerous Thing': Rural Realities, Professional Ideals, And The Forgotten History Of Cottage Nursing C. 1880-1939, Martha Groppo

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship

This paper examines the rise and fall of cottage nursing, a controversial approach to rural healthcare that was championed across the United Kingdom from the 1880s to the interwar period. Defying the strategies being used to professionalise nursing in urban centres, cottage nursing supporters argued that nurses for the rural poor should be recruited from the lowest social classes, given only the briefest training, and prepared to do both nursing and menial domestic work. Their critics espoused the noble ideal of providing the rural poor with only the best-trained lady district nurses from the apparent moral high ground, persuasively arguing …

Caught In The Content Tornado: How To Protect Violent-Crime Trials From The Prejudicial Effects Of Live Streaming, Katie Grace Frisbee

Duke Law Journal

With the rise of social media use and true-crime consumption postpandemic, this Note argues that current court practices regarding cameras in the courtroom are insufficient to protect a defendant’s right to a fair trial. This Note focuses on the impact of live streaming violent-crime trials on social media and its consequences—specifically, the “content tornado” that it creates. The content tornado, a concept this Note introduces, refers to the whirlwind of fact, fiction, and opinion that emerges when violent-crime trials are live streamed on social media. This concept describes how live streamed trials generate emotional and moralized content that gets amplified …

On Translating Adelina Gurrea’S “La Doncella Que Vivió Tres Vidas”, Jonathan Chua, Ma. Luisa Young

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

This is an account of the translation process that went into the English translation of the story “La doncella que vivió tres vidas” (1943) by Adelina Gurrea, a writer of Spanish and Filipino descent. Gurrea’s Cuentos de Juana, from which the story is taken, occupies a liminal space in the literary history of the Philippines, as it was published in Spain for a Spanish-reading audience, yet it is borne of her childhood in Negros, in the Philippines. The story illustrates Maria Tymoczko’s observation that postcolonial writing and interlingual translation are similar. Both are acts of representing the “foreign,” a linguistic …

In The News!: “Teatro Filipino,” “Artista Filipina,” “Piano Filipino”: Semantic Birthings Of A Nascent Identity In Music, Ma. Patricia Brillantes Silvestre

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

The final decade of the nineteenth century saw the emergence of a visible, palpable self-consciousness with the expansion of the formerly denigrating nomenclature ‘Filipino’ (from its original criollo designation) to encompass the mestizo and indio. This resulted from a uniquely potent brew of socio-political and economic factors that boiled over in this period to trigger the first stirrings of nationalism. The newspaper as, in the words of Roland Barthes, “social space” h ad chronicled t he shift in the term’s usage, as explored in the journalism on music—from a mere geographic denotation of the colonized native from las islas Filipinas …

Connecting The Dots: From The Mythical East To The “Real Asia”, Paulo Jorge De Sousa Pinto Jan 2025

Connecting The Dots: From The Mythical East To The “Real Asia”, Paulo Jorge De Sousa Pinto

Perspectives in the Arts and Humanities Asia

Magellan opened a new connecting link among Europe, Asia, and America, paving the way for the formation of a global world. But it was also a point of arrival of a long process that went back to antiquity. For many centuries, Europe and Asia had a fragmentary and distorted image of each other. In Europe, confusing notions of “East,” “Asia,” or “India” crossed antiquity and the Middle Ages and mixed fabulous tales with real data about what was beyond the Persian Empire or, later, the Muslim world. The information circulated mainly through land trade routes. In the fifteenth century, Iberian …

Movement competence (MC) and emotional intelligence (EI) are positively associated and important for child development. Intervention research is needed to determine causal relationships between these outcomes. Gamification is a pedagogical model that may enhance MC and EI, but implementing interventions in schools is complex and requires multi-stakeholder involvement to ensure feasibility, acceptability and sustainability. However, methodological evidence to inform co-development work within physical education (PE) is lacking and further research is required. This study describes the process of co-developing a gamified PE intervention with school stakeholders to increase MC and EI among primary-aged children. A total of 91 children and …

Urinary neutrophils are a hallmark of urinary tract infection (UTI), yet the mechanisms governing their activation, function, and efficacy in controlling infection remain incompletely understood. Tamm-Horsfall glycoprotein (THP), the most abundant protein in urine, uses terminal sialic acids to bind an inhibitory receptor and dampen neutrophil inflammatory responses. We hypothesized that neutrophil modulation is an integral part of THP-mediated host protection. In a UTI model, THP-deficient mice showed elevated urinary tract bacterial burdens, increased neutrophil recruitment, and more severe tissue histopathological changes compared with WT mice. Furthermore, THP-deficient mice displayed impaired urinary NETosis during UTI. To investigate the effect of …

Bioactive fatty acid-derived oxylipin molecules play key roles mediating inflammation and oxidative stress. Circulating levels of fatty acids and oxylipins are influenced by environmental and genetic factors; characterizing the genetic architecture of bioactive lipids could yield new insights into underlying biology. We performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of 81 fatty acids and oxylipins in 11,584 Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) participants with genetic and lipidomic data measured at study baseline (58.6% female, mean age = 46.1 years (standard deviation 13.8)). Additionally, given the effects of central obesity on inflammation, we examined interactions with waist circumference using two-degree-of-freedom …

MGA (OMIM: 616061) encodes a dual-specificity transcription factor that regulates the expression of Max-network and T-box family target genes, important in embryogenesis. Previous studies have linked MGA to various phenotypes, including neurodevelopmental disorders, congenital heart disease, and early-onset Parkinson's disease. Here, we describe the clinical phenotype of individuals with de novo, heterozygous predicted loss-of-function variants in MGA, suggesting a unique disorder involving both neurodevelopmental and congenital anomalies. In addition to developmental delays, certain congenital anomalies were present in all individuals in this cohort including cardiac anomalies, male genital malformations, and craniofacial dysmorphisms. Additional findings seen in multiple individuals in this …

Saying Hello Again Rather Than A Long Goodbye: A Novel Way Of Addressing Pre-Death Grief And Facilitating Continuing Bonds For Dementia Caregivers, Elizabeth Gilmour, Edith Steffen

School of Psychology

The ‘Hello Again’ letter-writing intervention is sometimes used in grief counselling to facilitate continuing bonds with the deceased. Family member caregivers of those with dementia often experience a ‘long goodbye’, as the relationship with their loved one gradually changes through serial losses before they have physically died, making the relationship markedly different than the one before the dementia. There are limited interventions to support caregivers with this pre-death grief. This study aimed to address this lack by offering the ‘Hello Again’ intervention to dementia family caregivers, exploring the perceived helpfulness of the task, and attempting to understand the meanings of …

The cochlear nuclear complex (CN), the starting point for all central auditory processing, encompasses a suite of neuronal cell types highly specialized for neural coding of acoustic signals. However, the molecular logic governing these specializations remains unknown. By combining single-nucleus RNA sequencing and Patch-seq analysis, we reveal a set of transcriptionally distinct cell populations encompassing all previously observed types and discover multiple hitherto unknown subtypes with anatomical and physiological identity. The resulting comprehensive cell-type taxonomy reconciles anatomical position, morphological, physiological, and molecular criteria, enabling the determination of the molecular basis of the specialized cellular phenotypes in the CN. In particular, …

BACKGROUND: Multiple sulfatase deficiency (MSD) is an exceptionally rare neurodegenerative disorder due to the absence or deficiency of 17 known cellular sulfatases. The activation of all these cellular sulfatases is dependent on the presence of the formylglycine-generating enzyme, which is encoded by the SUMF1 gene. Disease-causing homozygous or compound heterozygous variants in SUMF1 result in MSD. Other than symptomatic treatment, no curative therapy exists as of yet for MSD. Eight out of these 17 sulfatases are primarily localized in the lysosome.

METHODS: Two siblings with attenuated MSD underwent hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT), evaluating the possibility of lysosomal enzymatic cross-correction from …

Optimizing Post-Transcription Language Analysis Using Audio Signal-To-Noise Ratio Estimations, Dongeek Shin

Defensive Publications Series

This publication describes using signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) estimators for audio recordings to identify an optimal large language model (LLM) for analyzing audio transcriptions generated from the audio recordings. This publication may enable users of microphone-enabled devices (e.g., smartwatches, tablets, wearables, cellular devices, mobile phones, etc.) to obtain more accurate responses to audio queries by using SNR estimators to infer the accuracy or quality of the transcription. The device may use the SNR estimates to select an appropriate LLM to generate responses to the audio input (e.g., queries, prompts, commands, etc.). It may be more difficult for speech-to-text transcription engines to …

Considering The Implications Of Assessment Metrics For Practitioners, Brendon Soltis

MAGIS: Student Development Journal

This article examines the how the datafication of higher education impacts student affairs practitioners. I review relevant literature over the past five years to show how the shift towards a reliance on data is implicated by universities’ need to be legitimated, both internally and externally. While assessment and the use of data promises enhanced student learning and engagement, is it aligned with student development in practice? I discuss the implications of this shift towards a reliance on data and suggest ways student affairs practitioners can approach assessment in their work.

Benjamin’S Estranged Heim, Andrew Brooks Jan 2025

Benjamin’S Estranged Heim, Andrew Brooks

Living in Languages

This paper examines Walter Benjamin's engagement with the motif of Heim (home) as it interweaves with his intellectual and personal experiences during the early 1920s. Through an analysis of Benjamin’s writings and correspondence, including his plans for the journal Angelus Novus and reflections on his friendship with Fritz Heinle, the study explores Heim as both a real and rhetorical space. Initially conceived as an idealized site of intellectual and spiritual communion, Heim is transformed by personal tragedy and historical crisis into an unattainable, speculative ideal—a rhetorical atopos. This evolution parallels Benjamin’s philosophical pursuit of “pure language” and his reimagining …

Beyond Gaining And Losing: A Thematic Approach To The Translation Of Washington Square, Jin Li

Living in Languages

In putting a literary work into another language, the translator functions as a literary critic, whose task requires both language competence and critical perception. As Venuti writes, “A translation does not communicate the source text itself but the translator’s interpretation of it”. The translation, therefore, can be considered as another form of literary criticism, inspiring the reader to enrich the repertoire of the source text. A comparative reading of the source text against the translation engages the reader in processing three-fold interpretations, leading to a multifaceted communication among the source text, the translator and the reader. The reading of the …
