Migrants For The Sake Of The Lord, Fr. Renzo De Luca, Sj Jan 2025

Migrants For The Sake Of The Lord, Fr. Renzo De Luca, Sj

Asia Pacific Mission Studies

This article presents the 37 Japanese Martyrs of Japan proposed for beatification who died in the 1868–71 period. They represent a little-known part of the so called “Last Persecution” of Japan. They are proposed as an example of exiled people who accepted the trials they suffered because of their Faith. First, a brief background of their situation is given, who they were, and the influence they had in Japanese society, which was mainly the introduction of religious freedom in Japan by the Meiji Government that opened a cultural and religious exchange with the West. Some examples are given of their …

The human transmembrane protease, serine 2 (TMPRSS2), essential for SARS-CoV-2 entry, is a key antiviral target. Here, we computationally profiled the TMPRSS2-binding affinities of 15 antiviral compounds. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for the docked complexes revealed that three compounds exited the substrate-binding cavity (SBC), suggesting noncompetitive inhibition. Of the remaining compounds, five charged ones exhibited reduced binding stability due to competing electrostatic interactions and increased solvent exposure, while seven neutral compounds showed stronger binding affinity driven by van der Waals (vdW) interactions compensating for unfavorable electrostatic effects (including electrostatic interactions and desolvation penalties). Positive and negative hotspot residues were identified …

The ability of immune cells to expand numerically after infusion distinguishes adoptive immunotherapies from traditional drugs, providing unique therapeutic advantages as well as the potential for unmanageable toxicities. Here, we describe a case of lethal hyperleukocytosis in a patient with neuroblastoma treated on phase 1 clinical trial (NCT03294954) with autologous natural killer T cells (NKTs) expressing a GD2-specific chimeric antigen receptor and cytokine interleukin 15 (GD2-CAR.15). This patient was the first to be treated on dose level (DL) 5 and the first patient whose product was restimulated with K562-derived artificial antigen-presenting cells (aAPCs) instead of autologous peripheral blood mononuclear cells …

Rethinking Immigration Enforcement, Peter L. Markowitz Jan 2025

Rethinking Immigration Enforcement, Peter L. Markowitz

Florida Law Review

As the nation turns the page away from the dark chapter of President Trump’s relentless assault on immigrants, it is time to take stock of the nation’s unprecedented immigration enforcement regime. During its relatively short existence, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) has deported more than twice as many people as were deported in the entire previous history of the United States. The human and fiscal costs of ICE’s mass deportation agenda are astronomical, and there is almost universal agreement across the political spectrum that the United States’ immigration enforcement apparatus is badly broken. That, however, is where the …

Challenges Of Sustainable Infrastructure In Egypt For Contractors, Consultants, And Owners, Abdelrahman Ali Gaber Eng., Mohammed Elsayed Elsharkawy Assis. Prof., Adel Ibrahim Eldosouky Prof.

Journal of Engineering Research

This research investigates the multifaceted challenges and opportunities for implementing sustainable infrastructure in Egypt from the perspectives of key stakeholders—contractors, consultants, and owners. It uses structured questionnaires to draw on a comprehensive literature review and a field study. These questionnaires were distributed to experts across three vital sectors: roads and bridges, water and sewage networks, and ports and shore protection. A total of 95 participants completed the survey, surpassing the statistically required sample size of 61, calculated using Kish's 1965 formula, thereby enhancing the robustness of the findings. Key barriers identified include high initial costs, insufficient operational funding, lack of …

A Value-Based Hbim Framework For Adaptive Reuse Of Heritage Buildings: A Case Study Of Bayt Yakan, Ayman Samy, Alaa E. El-Habashi, Al-Moatazbellah Al-Behiery Jan 2025

A Value-Based Hbim Framework For Adaptive Reuse Of Heritage Buildings: A Case Study Of Bayt Yakan, Ayman Samy, Alaa E. El-Habashi, Al-Moatazbellah Al-Behiery

Journal of Engineering Research

This paper presents a value-based Heritage Building Information Modeling (HBIM) framework for assessing the adaptive reuse of heritage buildings. The framework integrates key heritage values criteria -authenticity, integrity, significance, and adaptability- into HBIM, allowing for structured decision-making that balances heritage preservation with contemporary operation. Using Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA), different adaptive reuse scenarios are evaluated in HBIM Environment to ensure that interventions respect the building's authenticity, integrity, and significance while meeting sustainable operational needs. The case study focuses on Bayt Yakan, a 17th-century heritage building in Cairo, where three adaptive reuse scenarios—continued use as a library, conversion into a hotel …

Preserving Sunken Granite With Olive Oil For Sustainable Underwater Museums, Ahmed Gelany, Asmaa Ibrahim, Omnia Mohamed, Somaya Mabrouk, Rahma Alaraby, Shahd Abdalmajeed, Wessam Turkey, Nada Shokr, Usama Konbr

Journal of Engineering Research

This study addresses the crucial role of heritage preservation in sustainable urban development, as emphasized by the Egyptian National Agenda 2030. Focusing on the challenges of preserving sunken ancient Egyptian granite monuments in Aboukir Bay, this study investigates the potential of olive oil, a natural, bio-based material, as a sustainable in-situ preservative. Granite samples treated with olive oil were subjected to simulated marine conditions and evaluated using compression teas sts, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results demonstrated that olive oil effectively inhibited water absorption and biocolonization, mimicking the lotus effect, and increased the fracture loading of granite …
