In western Anatolia, to the south of the İzmir-Ankara Suture, Menderes Massif, Cycladic Blueschists, Afyon Zone and Bornova Mélange form the main tectonic belts from structurally bottom to top. In the Akhisar region, the Akhisar Nappe consists of Hasköy Formation, below, and Görenez Limestone, above. The Hasköy Formation is composed of a metaclastic sequence with metarhyolite intercalations (237.4 ± 1.1 Ma, zircon LA-ICP-MS) and recrystallized limestone lenses, and it gradually passes upward into late Norian-Early Jurassic Görenez Limestone. New radiogenic data from metarhyolites of the Hasköy Formation and fossil determinations from recrystallized limestones of the Görenez Limestone show that the …

Theses and Dissertations

Cancer and autoimmune diseases both impose a substantial healthcare burden on the US and world populations. In 2016, there were over 17 million cases of cancer, leading to nearly nine million deaths. Additionally, autoimmune diseases cause substantial mortality and morbidity and are present in 3-5% of the general population. Despite the increased attention scientists now give diseases that are impacted by immune imbalance, we have yet to find regimens to treat the core cause(s) of tissue dysfunction without drastically decreasing the quality of life for many patients with either cancer or autoimmune disease. For instance, anti-CD19 Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) …

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Although viruses subvert innate immune pathways for their replication, there is evidence they can also co-opt antiviral responses for their benefit. The ubiquitous human pathogen, Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1), encodes a protein (UL12.5) that induces the release of mitochondrial nucleic acid into the cytosol, which activates immune-sensing pathways and reduces productive replication in nonneuronal cells. HSV-1 establishes latency in neurons and can reactivate to cause disease. We found that UL12.5 is required for HSV-1 reactivation in neurons and acts to directly promote viral lytic gene expression during initial exit from latency. Further, the direct activation of innate immune-sensing pathways triggered …

Incorporating Visual Information Into Natural Language Processing, Maxwell Mbabilla Aladago Jan 2025

Incorporating Visual Information Into Natural Language Processing, Maxwell Mbabilla Aladago

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

Natural language describes entities in the world, some real and some abstract. It is also common practice to complement human learning of natural language with visual cues. This is evident in the heavily graphical nature of children’s literature which underscores the importance of visual cues in language acquisition. Similarly, the notion of “visual learners” is well recognized, reflecting the understanding that visual signals such as illustrations, gestures, and depictions effectively supplement language. In machine learning, two primary paradigms have emerged for training systems involving natural language. The first paradigm encompasses setups where pre-training and downstream tasks are exclusively in natural …

Magnetic topological materials LnSbTe (Ln = lanthanide) have attracted intensive attention because of the presence of interplay between magnetism, topological, and electron correlations depending on the choices of magnetic Ln elements. Varying Sb and Te composition is an efficient approach to control structural, magnetic, and electronic properties. Here, we report on the composition-dependent properties in PrSbxTe2-x. We identified the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structure transitions in this material system and very large negative magnetoresistance in the x = 0.3 composition, which might be ascribed to the coupling between magnetism and transport. Such unusual magnetotransport enables PrSbxTe2-x topological materials as a promising platform for …

Cervical cancer, while preventable through screening and treatment of cervical precancer, remains a global challenge with a disproportionately high burden of disease in resource-limited settings, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Lack of affordable, easy-to-use screening and diagnostic tests contributes to this disparity. Most commercially available tests are not appropriate for use in LMICs due to resource constraints. Specifically, HPV mRNA and oncoprotein tests that have high specificity for cervical precancer and cancer require complex sample preparation protocols and expensive instrumentation. To address these limitations, an HPV E7 oncoprotein assay for HPV16, 18, and 45 was developed that is …

Tug Of War Between Opt-In And Opt-Out Organ Donation Systems, Amna Cehaja Jan 2025

Tug Of War Between Opt-In And Opt-Out Organ Donation Systems, Amna Cehaja

DePaul Journal of Health Care Law

The demand for organ transplants is far greater than the supply of transplantable organs. Every day, twenty people in the United States die as they await an organ transplant; this equates to roughly 7,300 people annually. Whilst organ donation can be highly effective for prospective patients, not all individuals want to take part in such an action. A person’s decision not to partake in organ donation can stem from their ethics, morality, religion, and much more. For individuals that live in the United States and do not want to donate their organs upon death, they do not have to take …

Through a fusion of aeroacoustic improvements to be made to …

Adjusting Immunity For Unconstitutional Torts, Liam Grah Jan 2025

Adjusting Immunity For Unconstitutional Torts, Liam Grah

University of Chicago Legal Forum

Sovereign immunity protects the government from liability arising in suits brought against it by citizens. Though lacking a firm constitutional basis, sovereign immunity has been justified as protecting the public fisc and maintaining the sense of sovereign dignity. The Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA) broadly waives sovereign immunity for tort claims against the United States. The discretionary function exception maintains immunity for tortious acts committed by employees acting within the valid bounds of their discretion. There is a circuit split about whether the discretionary function exception immunizes tortious conduct that is also unconstitutional. Circuits in the majority side of the …
