Contemporary Views Of Spiritual And Theological Reflection (2013-2023) Compared To Forty Years Ago: Analysis Of 32 Texts, Chris Brouillard-Coyle, Des Mcenaney, Joselin Zak, Thomas St. James O’Connor
Consensus
What are contemporary views on spiritual and theological reflection? We answer this question using a hermeneutical research method analyzing 32 texts from the current situation. The data indicate five themes: 1) experiences as sources for spiritual/theological reflection, 2) meaning making as key component for spiritual/theological reflection, 3) growth in spiritual reflection and overlap with theological reflection, 4. some flexible methods; many without explicit method, and 5) spiritual but not religious. Discussion, limitations, and areas for future research are provided.

Correlates Of Inaccuracy In Reporting Of Energy Intake Among Persons With Multiple Sclerosis, Robert W Motl
Correlates Of Inaccuracy In Reporting Of Energy Intake Among Persons With Multiple Sclerosis, Robert W Motl
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) are interested in diet as a second-line approach for disease management. This study examined potential variables that correlate with inaccuracy of self-reported energy intake (EI) in adults with MS.
METHODS: Twenty-eight participants completed two assessment appointments within a 14-day period that included a standard doubly labeled water (DLW) protocol for estimating total energy expenditure (TEE). The participants reported their EI using the Automated Self-Administered 24 h (ASA24) Dietary Assessment Tool. The primary variables of interest for explaining the discrepancy between TEE and ASA24 EI (i.e., inaccuracy) included cognition (processing speed, visuospatial memory, and verbal …

Floods in Bangladesh significantly impact rice production, a vital element of food security. While regional flood effects have been extensively studied, the specific impacts on rice, the country's primary staple, remain underexplored. This study assesses the effects of floods on rice production, availability, and prices, alongside identifying household vulnerabilities and adaptation strategies. Using both quantitative and qualitative data from secondary sources and interviews with farmers, we analyzed how floods affect rice cultivation and market dynamics. Our findings showed that floods predominantly affect wet season Aman rice, temporarily disrupting cultivation, national yield, and market prices. However, the adoption of stress-resistant varieties …

Urine Proteomics Defines An Immune Checkpoint-Associated Nephritis Signature, James P Long, Shailbala Singh, Yanlan Dong, Cassian Yee, Jamie S Lin
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy is a cornerstone treatment for many cancers, but it can induce severe immunotoxicity, including acute interstitial nephritis (AIN). Currently, kidney biopsy is required to differentiate ICI-AIN from other causes of acute kidney injury (AKI). However, this invasive approach can lead to morbidity, delayed glucocorticoid treatment for patients with AIN, and unnecessarily prolonged suspension of ICI therapy in non-AIN patients. Delayed or incorrect diagnosis of ICI-AIN is particularly detrimental, as over 50% of patients are at risk of permanent renal damage. Thus, there is an urgent need for non-invasive biomarkers that can rapidly and accurately distinguish …

Investigating The Lived Experiences Of Graduate Students At The University Of New Mexico, Holly M. Surbaugh, Olivia Baca, Liz Cooper, Mark Emmons, Teresa Y. Neely
Journal of Graduate Librarianship
Researchers at the University of New Mexico used a modified critical incident technique study to explore the lived experiences of graduate students in their roles as students, researchers, and teachers. The authors interviewed 20 graduate students in 2022 and then evaluated transcribed responses through two stages of qualitative coding. The students described their multiple roles during their graduate programs and the support they seek for their academic success and overall lives, along with common themes of struggling to secure adequate resources, both financial and social. Analysis of their responses will help align practitioner strategies and library service offerings with their …
Is Buddhist View Of Mental States In Consonance With The Foundational Tenets Of Their System?: Investigating Nyāya And Buddhist Debate On Perception In Jayanta Bhatta’S Nyāyamanjari, Ajay K. Verma
Comparative Philosophy
The first noble truth in Buddhism points toward a purely phenomenal experience. Though purely qualitative in nature, the experience of suffering has an existential aspect. As stated in the second noble truth, suffering has a cause that relates to our situatedness in the world. Notwithstanding, the cause of suffering has to be something external to the mental state of suffering itself. Some of the more recent studies on mental states suggest two different positions on the nature of mental states. One may view mental states as self-referential, reflexive and purely qualitative in nature; alternatively, one could view them as transitive …
Epistemic Injustices In Philosophical Practice: African And Western, Michael Omoge
Epistemic Injustices In Philosophical Practice: African And Western, Michael Omoge
Comparative Philosophy
Arguably, there is a Eurocentric problem in philosophical practice, which, among many other things, has unwarrantedly given Western analytic philosophy an identity power that governs our collective social imagination regarding the ideal philosophy. In this paper, I argue that in both the African and Western philosophical communities, this identity power makes it such that the African analytic philosopher is the victim of different forms of epistemic injustice. In the African community, he is a victim of epistemic withdrawal and epistemic meekness; in the Western community, he is a victim of epistemic gatekeeping. I characterize these forms of epistemic injustice, setting …

Farm Resilience, Management Practices, And Producer Sentiment: Segmenting Us Farms Using Machine Learning Algorithms, Margaret Lippsmeyer, Michael Langemeier, James R. Mintert, Nathan Thompson
Journal of Applied Farm Economics
Farm managers possess a broad spectrum of capabilities, ranging from tech-savvy, strategically focused managers to those grappling with operational challenges. Our study examines survey data from 403 US commercial producers in order to identify subsets of producers who differ in terms of resilience, management practices, producer sentiment, and other farm characteristics. Utilizing various supervised and unsupervised machine learning techniques, we uncover key farm characteristics that capture the most pronounced variations in survey responses. We then cluster the dataset using these key variables, maximizing separation between clusters and minimizing differences within clusters using Ward’s hierarchical clustering. Fisher’s exact tests are implemented …
Comparison Of Two Strategies Of Screening Experiments: Single-Shot Experiment Vs. Two-Stage Screening Experiment, Kelvin Njuki, Emil Agbemade
Comparison Of Two Strategies Of Screening Experiments: Single-Shot Experiment Vs. Two-Stage Screening Experiment, Kelvin Njuki, Emil Agbemade
Data Science and Data Mining
Experiments involving many factors are often complex, time-consuming, and expensive. Screening out the least important factors helps the experimenter(s) allocate the limited resources efciently to the most important factors. Supersaturated and orthogonal array designs are among the designs used to conduct screening experiments. Supersaturated designs (SSDs) are those where the number of runs (observations) is less than the number of factors, while orthogonal array (OA) designs are those where at least the columns are orthogonal to each other. In this study, we conduct a simulation study to compare two strategies of screening experiments. Strategy one is a single shot experiment …

Bullets, Bandages, And Fairy Dust: Improving Dmo Health Services Support With Wargaming, Debra D. Buckland-Coffey, Robert P. Gerbracht, Kengo Nishida, William R. Gureck
Joint Force Quarterly
This article argues that health services support remains insufficiently integrated into planning, wargaming, and exercises for distributed maritime operations and expeditionary advanced base operations. The authors describe the common practice of “fairy dusting,” in which planners accept unvalidated assumptions about medical support, casualty movement, logistics, and sustainment in order to keep exercises moving. In a contested Indo-Pacific environment, however, high casualty rates, extended evacuation timelines, dispersed forces, vulnerable supply chains, and limited medical capacity could place severe strain on existing health services systems. Drawing on doctrine, after-action reports, and interviews with Navy, Marine Corps, medical, and logistics leaders, the article …
Determining Political Objectives, Milan Vego
Determining Political Objectives, Milan Vego
Joint Force Quarterly
This article explains how political objectives shape grand strategy and national or coalition security strategy and argues that they must be realistic, achievable, and clearly articulated before military options are developed. Political leaders bear primary responsibility for determining these objectives but should incorporate the professional advice of senior military leaders. The author outlines a process that begins with a strategic estimate, identification and prioritization of national interests, and assessment of the enemy, available resources, and political assumptions. Political objectives may be offensive or defensive and limited or unlimited in scope, with their value and ambition affecting the level of effort, …
The New Pornography Wars, Julie Dahlstrom
The New Pornography Wars, Julie Dahlstrom
Florida Law Review
The world’s largest online pornography conglomerate, MindGeek, has come under fire for the publishing of “rape videos,” child pornography, and nonconsensual pornography on its website, Pornhub. In response, as in the “pornography wars” of the 1970s and 1980s, lawyers and activists have turned to civil remedies and filed creative anti-trafficking lawsuits against MindGeek and third parties, like payment processing company, Visa. These lawsuits seek not only to achieve legal accountability for online sex trafficking but also to reframe a broader array of online harms as sex trafficking. This Article explores what these new trafficking lawsuits mean for the future regulation …
Models Of Bail Reform, Brandon L. Garrett
Models Of Bail Reform, Brandon L. Garrett
Florida Law Review
Bail reform is an urgent topic in the United States and internationally, but what constitutes reform and how to accomplish reform goals is contested. Jails are a modern epicenter of incarceration, with a stunning growth in American jail populations over the past four decades despite declines in both arrests and crime. As many as sixty percent of the half million people currently in jails have not been convicted but are instead detained pretrial. Prior waves of bail reform produced a system largely reliant on secured bonds, which require up-front cash payments to avoid jail time before trial. More recent reform …
The Legal Primacy Reform, Asaf Raz
The Legal Primacy Reform, Asaf Raz
Florida Law Review
Corporate law scholarship revolves around two polar conceptions, known as “shareholder primacy” and “corporate social responsibility.” This Article takes the literature in a new direction, arguing that the current dichotomy misses a crucial aspect of corporate law: its norm of legal primacy. Any pursuit of profit, by the corporation, is legally permitted only within the bounds of full compliance with non-corporate positive law. When the corporation acts unlawfully, corporate law provides a powerful, and until now undertheorized, set of remedies against its fiduciaries and shareholders. As this Article demonstrates, the most effective way to promote socially desirable corporate behavior is …
Five Circuit Courts Against Five Circuit Courts: The Inconsistent Methods Of Review For Fifth Amendment Violations In The Immigration Courts, Elisa Perry
Akron Law Review
The note examines critical due process violations in U.S. immigration courts, focusing on the circuit court split regarding non-citizens' Fifth Amendment right to obtain counsel at their own expense during removal proceedings. Currently, five circuit courts require non-citizens to prove "substantial prejudice" when denied counsel, while five courts reject this standard. The research argues that this inconsistency undermines fundamental due process protections, suggesting solutions including a Supreme Court decision, new legislation, and an executive order to establish a uniform standard that prioritizes non-citizens' rights to legal representation and ensures fair hearings, particularly given the complex and high-stakes nature of immigration …

Generalization Outcomes Given Multiple Exemplars Or Mediating Response Strategies, Irene Looi
Doctoral Dissertations - College of Arts and Sciences
This study examined the recombinative generalization (RG) outcomes in three variations of matrix training conditions: overlapping of training components (MET), non-overlapping of training components (Control), and non-overlapping of training components with a mediating response (MeR). Participants were first taught to translate three different sets of Malay words into English on a computer; each training set was associated with a training condition. Following training, participants completed RG probes with written or multiple-choice paper assessments. In Experiment 1, a multielement design with all conditions was implemented with four participants. In Experiment 2, a reversal and alternating-treatments design was implemented with six other …

The province of Bilecik is one of the leading block stone production regions in Northwest Asia Minor, where natural stone quarrying has been carried out since ancient times. Natural stones with different patterns have been produced in the block stone quarries in this region. The natural stones produced from this region were used in Italy and Istanbul during the Roman period and in the construction of many historical buildings in Istanbul during the Ottoman period. The best known of these natural stones is Breccia Corallina (Marmor Sagarium), a brecciated limestone with ivory-colored clasts and coral red cement. In this study, …
Mineralogy And Geochemistry Of Copper Slags From The Roman Imperial Period:Implications For The Type And Technology Of Smelting Furnaces Indereköy Ancient Copper Mine (Thrace Region, Türkiye), Yi̇ği̇t Kurt
Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences
The Strandja Mountains in the northwestern part of Turkey host porphyry and skarn type mineralizations and ancient slag heaps, which are the residues of ancient metallurgical processes. Ancient smelting furnaces were established near the skarn type mineralization zones and the ores were processed. Charcoal were used as fuel in these furnaces. Tenorite mineral was detected in the mineralogical analyses of the slags by XRD and it was determined that the furnaces were heated above 1000 °C. When the distribution of SiO2 in the slags was examined according to different end members, it was determined that the melting temperatures were in …

What Are Family Caregivers’ Experiences Of Coordinating End-Of-Life Care At Home: A Narrative Review, Harriet Nicholls, Matthew Carey, Kevin Hambridge
School of Nursing and Midwifery
Objectives People with life-limiting diseases, who are no longer receiving active or curable treatment, often state their preferred place of care and death as the home. This requires coordinating a multidisciplinary approach, using available health and social care services to synchronize care. Family caregivers are key to enabling home-based end-of-life support; however, the 2 elements that facilitate success - coordination and family caregiver - are not necessarily associated as being intertwined or one and the same. This narrative review explores family caregiver experiences of coordinating end-of-life care in the home setting. Methods Studies were identified systematically following the Preferred Reporting …

Playing The Digital Dialectic Game: Writing Pedagogy With Generative Ai, Rebekah Shultz Colby
University Writing Program: Faculty Scholarship
This article explores teaching writing with generative AI as critical play where students and teachers engage in an ethically dialectical and aleatory game with generative AI. I qualitatively surveyed 24 writing teachers about how they teach writing with generative AI as well as its advantages and disadvantages. I discovered that teachers used generative AI to teach about the ethics of generative AI's design and rhetorical use to avoid plagiarism. Teachers also critically played with generative AI to teach the writing process of invention, drafting, revision, and editing. Specifically, the critical, dialectical interplay of human and machine invents in aleatory and …
