Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: The early assessment of heart failure (HF) risk in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) can help reduce mortality. S100A8/A9 is not only rapidly released after myocardial ischemia, but is also involved in reperfusion injury, which is an important predictor of HF after ACS. We attempted to construct a reliable HF risk stratification tool for evaluating patients with ACS after reperfusion therapy based on S100A8/A9 dynamic changes.

METHODS AND RESULTS: This prospective study included 3 independent cohorts of patients with ACS who received reperfusion therapy. The discovery cohort was divided into 2 subgroups: the longitudinal subgroup (n=264) with serum …

Sleep Trajectories And All-Cause Mortality Among Low-Income Adults, Kelsie M Full, Hui Shi, Loren Lipworth, Lawrence T Dauer, Michael T Mumma, Qian Xiao

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

IMPORTANCE: Short and long sleep durations are adversely associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes, and mortality. It remains unclear how sleep duration trajectories over time are associated with mortality and whether these associations vary by well-documented sex, race, and socioeconomic sleep disparities.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of 5-year sleep duration trajectories with all-cause and cause-specific mortality among US adults, predominantly those in low-income groups.

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: The Southern Community Cohort Study included participants aged 40 to 79 years recruited and enrolled (from March 2002 to September 2009) from community health centers by using random sampling …

Are Positive And Negative Leader Humor Two Different Coins? A Meta-Analysis, Xiaohong Xu, Richard Hayes, Lixin Jiang, William P. Jimenez

Psychology Faculty Publications

Scholars disagree on the distinction between positive and negative leader humor, which may hinder the integration and advancement of the leader humor literature. Thus, we meta-analyzed the correlation between positive and negative leader humor, as well as their shared nomological networks (k = 161; follower N = 45,759; leader N = 7,820). Our meta-analysis indicates that (1) there is a very small but significant correlation between positive and negative leader humor (ρ = -.07); (2) positive and negative leader humor have differential relationships with most antecedents (e.g., positive affectivity) and outcomes (e.g., innovation and citizenship behavior); (3) positive affect …

Structural information on channelrhodopsins' mechanism of light-gated ion conductance is scarce, limiting its engineering as optogenetic tools. Here, we use single-particle cryo-electron microscopy of peptidisc-incorporated protein samples to determine the structures of the slow-cycling mutant C110A of kalium channelrhodopsin 1 from Hyphochytrium catenoides (HcKCR1) in the dark and upon laser flash excitation. Upon photoisomerization of the retinal chromophore, the retinylidene Schiff base NH-bond reorients from the extracellular to the cytoplasmic side. This switch triggers a series of side chain reorientations and merges intramolecular cavities into a transmembrane K+ conduction pathway. Molecular dynamics simulations confirm K+ flux through the illuminated state …

Despite the established efficacy of heart failure (HF) guideline-directed medical therapies, implementation varies across demographic groups, including Black, Indigenous, and people of color, older adults, females, and those who are socioeconomically deprived. This review synthesizes the representativeness of trial participants and describes subgroup analyses from pivotal trials in HF with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). It reviews the largely consistent treatment effect of medical therapies across the demographic groups represented in trials. It makes arguments for broad implementation of therapies based on these data, while calling for more representative trials to improve research and health equity in HF.

Active Learning-Based Automated Construction Of Hamiltonian For Structural Phase Transitions: A Case Study On Batio3, Mian Dai, Yixuan Zhang, Nuno Fortunato, Peng Chen, Hongbin Zhang

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The effective Hamiltonians have been widely applied to simulate the phase transitions inpolarizable materials, with coefficients obtained by fitting to accurate first-principlescalculations. However, it is tedious to generate distorted structures with symmetry constraints,in particular when high-ordered terms are considered. In this work, we implement and apply aBayesian optimization-based approach to sample potential energy surfaces, automating theeffective Hamiltonian construction by selecting distorted structures via active learning. Taking BaTiO3(BTO) as an example, we demonstrate that the effective Hamiltonian can be obtainedusing fewer than 30 distorted structures. Follow-up Monte Carlo simulations can reproduce thestructural phase transition temperatures of BTO, comparable to experimental values …

Dominant mutations in the calcium-permeable ion channel TRPV4 (transient receptor potential vanilloid 4) cause diverse and largely distinct channelopathies, including inherited forms of neuromuscular disease, skeletal dysplasias and arthropathy. Pathogenic TRPV4 mutations cause gain of ion channel function and toxicity that can be rescued by small molecule TRPV4 antagonists in cellular and animal models, suggesting that TRPV4 antagonism could be therapeutic for patients. Numerous variants in TRPV4 have been detected with targeted and whole exome/genome sequencing, but for the vast majority, their pathogenicity remains unclear. Here, we used a combination of clinical information and experimental structure-function analyses to evaluate 30 …

Recent analytical advancements have uncovered increasing micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) in environmental, dietary, and biological domains, raising concerns about their health impacts. Preterm birth (PTB), a leading cause of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality, may be influenced by MNP exposure, yet this relationship remains unexplored. This study quantified 12 MNP polymers in placentae from term (n=87) and preterm (n=71) deliveries using pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Cumulative MNP concentrations were 28% higher in PTB placentae (mean ±SD: 224.7 ± 180.7 μg/g vs. 175.5 ± 137.9 μg/g; p=0.038). Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyurethane (PU), and polycarbonate (PC) were significantly …

The management of children with syndromes associated with an increased risk of benign and malignant neoplasms is a complex challenge for health care professionals. The 2023 American Association for Cancer Research Childhood Cancer Predisposition Workshop provided updated consensus guidelines on cancer surveillance in these syndromes, aiming to improve early detection and intervention and reduce morbidity associated with such neoplasms. In this article, we review several of the rare conditions discussed in this workshop. Ollier disease and Maffucci syndrome are enchondromatoses (disorders featuring benign bone lesions) with up to 50% risk of malignancy, including chondrosarcoma. These patients require surveillance with baseline …

From Bench To Bedside: Murine Models Of Inherited And Sporadic Brain Arteriovenous Malformations, Ashely R Ricciardelli, Gael Genet, Nafiisha Genet, Samuel T Mcclugage, Peter T Kan, Karen K Hirschi, Jason E Fish, Joshua D Wythe

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Brain arteriovenous malformations are abnormal vascular structures in which an artery shunts high pressure blood directly to a vein without an intervening capillary bed. These lesions become highly remodeled over time and are prone to rupture. Historically, brain arteriovenous malformations have been challenging to treat, using primarily surgical approaches. Over the past few decades, the genetic causes of these malformations have been uncovered. These can be divided into (1) familial forms, such as loss of function mutations in TGF-β (BMP9/10) components in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, or (2) sporadic forms, resulting from somatic gain of function mutations in genes involved in …

Anita S. Krishnakumar, What the New Major Questions Doctrine Is Not, 92 Geo. Wash. L. Rev. 1117 (2024).

When the sun sets in New York City, it rises in Tokyo. Okay, maybe not exactly, but you get the idea: setting somewhere, rising somewhere else. Now substitute Chevron for N.Y.C. and the Major Questions Doctrine for Tokyo. For the past forty years, administrative law scholars have been arguing over Chevron, and now that the sun has set on that doctrine, it’s time to turn our attention to the new rising sun, the Major Questions Doctrine (“MQD”). The sudden emergence …

Reassessing Haydn’S Orfeo In The Theatre, Dorian Bandy, Caryl Clark Feb 2025

Reassessing Haydn’S Orfeo In The Theatre, Dorian Bandy, Caryl Clark

HAYDN: Online Journal of the Haydn Society of North America

Haydn’s last opera, L’anima del filosofo (The Soul of the Philosopher), is a highly unusual retelling of the Orpheus myth. Written for London in 1791 to a libretto by C. F. Badini, the opera was never staged during the composer’s lifetime. Shut down in rehearsal and banned from performance, the opera never reached the stage because many of its themes—including the apocalyptic storm at the end—piqued British anxieties towards events unfolding in revolutionary France. The opera finally premiered in 1951, with Maria Callas singing the role of Euridice. Universal Edition prepared the performing material from sources photographed behind …

The Kindle Ecosystem Of Overconsumption: The Digital Flâneuse Roaming Booktok E-Spaces, Valeria Baltodano

Markets, Globalization & Development Review

The development of a community and culture around reading on the social media platform has afforded women new avenues for empowerment through their earning and spending power. A tool wielded often in this mobile space, Amazon’s Kindle device has reached a new height of popularity thanks to the women in the bookish community of TikTok. This paper employs Anne Friedberg’s concept of the flâneuse in relation to the limitation of women’s empowerment through the commodification and aestheticization of reading on TikTok. It demonstrates how the Kindle has become the locus for a culture of overconsumption through which these women exercise …

Designing Contract Modification, Albert H. Choi, George Triantis Feb 2025

Designing Contract Modification, Albert H. Choi, George Triantis

Law & Economics Working Papers

For long-term commercial contracts, modification tends to be the norm rather than the exception. While modification often takes place in response to an arrival of new information, contracting parties frequently modify the terms in response to a shift in bargaining power. In this paper, we explain how the flexibility to renegotiate in response to a shift in bargaining power can facilitate long-term contracting and thereby beneficial reliance investments and risk allocation. The prospect of modification can induce contracting parties who expect their bargaining power to improve, such as from the emergence of outside opportunities, to enter into contracts earlier and …
