Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has emerged as an important therapeutic intervention for neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders. After initial programming, clinicians are tasked with fine-tuning DBS parameters through repeated in-person clinic visits. We aimed to evaluate whether DBS patients achieve clinical benefit more rapidly by incorporating remote internet-based adjustment (RIBA) of stimulation parameters into the continuum of care.

METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled multicenter study (ClinicalTrails.gov NCT05269862) involving patients scheduled for de novo implantation with a DBS System to treat Parkinson's Disease. Eligibility criteria included the ability to incorporate RIBA as part of routine follow-up care. Ninety-six patients were …

The Principles Of Islamic Moral Philosophy And The Possibility Of Re-Conceptualizing Classical Islamic Aesthetics Of Architecture, Muhammad Feteha Jan 2025

The Principles Of Islamic Moral Philosophy And The Possibility Of Re-Conceptualizing Classical Islamic Aesthetics Of Architecture, Muhammad Feteha

Theses and Dissertations

This study is primarily concerned with the intersection of the moral and aesthetic theories of Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī (d. 1111). Al-Ghazālī’s theory of aesthetics has been the subject of thorough scholarly investigations and diverse interpretations in the field of Islamic art history since the 1940s. This thesis critiques the premises upon which the use of al-Ghazālī’s writings in studies of Islamic art and architecture were built. It suggests that they lead to what could be described as “the contradiction of unethical beauty.” To overcome this contradiction, it offers a comprehensive interpretation of al-Ghazālī’s aesthetics through analyzing the concept ḥusn in …

Predicting Individual Long-Term Prognosis Of Spatial Neglect Based On Acute Stroke Patient Data, Lisa Röhrig, Daniel Wiesen, Dongyun Li, Chris Rorden, Hans-Otto Karnath Jan 2025

Predicting Individual Long-Term Prognosis Of Spatial Neglect Based On Acute Stroke Patient Data, Lisa Röhrig, Daniel Wiesen, Dongyun Li, Chris Rorden, Hans-Otto Karnath

Faculty Publications

One of the most pressing questions after a stroke is whether an individual patient will recover in the long term. Previous studies demonstrated that spatial neglect—a common cognitive deficit after right hemispheric stroke—is a strong predictor for poor performance on a wide range of everyday tasks and for resistance to rehabilitation. The possibility of predicting long-term prognosis of spatial neglect is therefore of great relevance. The aim of the present study was to test the prognostic value of different imaging and non-imaging features from right hemispheric stroke patients: individual demographics (age, sex), initial neglect severity and acute lesion information (size, …

Determinants Of Sharia Restricted Intermediary Account (Sria) Adoption In Islamic Banks: A Theory Of Planned Behavior Approach, Tika Arundina, Ijiebs Pebs

International Journal of Islamic Economics and Business Sustainability

Purpose - This study examines the psychological factors influencing attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and intention to use Sharia Restricted Intermediary Account (SRIA) products in Islamic banking. As Indonesia experiences a demographic bonus, understanding these factors is essential to enhancing SRIA adoption and supporting national investment growth.

Design/methodology/approach - A non-probability sampling method was used, collecting data from 280 respondents. Partial Least Squares-Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed for data analysis.

Findings - The results indicate that compatibility and relative advantage positively influence attitudes toward SRIA, while uncertainty has a negative effect. Spirituality and normative beliefs positively impact subjective …

Ai And Mental Healthcare - Ethical And Regulatory Considerations, Hannah Gardiner, Natasha Mutebi Jan 2025

Ai And Mental Healthcare - Ethical And Regulatory Considerations, Hannah Gardiner, Natasha Mutebi

School of Health Professions

OverviewIn recent years the number of AI tools available for mental healthcare and wellbeing purposes has increased. This builds from a burgeoning digital health sector in which 20,000+ wellbeing apps are reportedly available on the app store. These apps are distinct both from AI tools which have been purpose-built for NHS use, and from unintended uses of companion chatbot apps – which were never intended for mental health purposes. All the cases of severe harm identified through this research were from unintended uses of general companion chatbot apps. But there are ethical considerations around the use of all AI tools …

“I Need This Person’S Support To Have A Career” The Material And Emotional Impacts Of Neoliberalism On Trans Collegians’ Classroom Experiences At A Public University, Justin A. Gutzwa, Robert A. Marx Jan 2025

“I Need This Person’S Support To Have A Career” The Material And Emotional Impacts Of Neoliberalism On Trans Collegians’ Classroom Experiences At A Public University, Justin A. Gutzwa, Robert A. Marx

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

Neoliberal capitalism has undoubtedly impacted every sphere of public education in the United States. As faculty are pushed towards identity-neutral modalities of instruction, students who identify as transgender, non-binary, or other expansive gender identities (trans) are forced to reckon with implicit and explicit power dynamics in classrooms that prioritize White, cisheteropatriarchal modes of knowledge production in nuanced ways. This qualitative study explores the ways neoliberal capitalism impacts the curricular experiences of trans students by centering the power dynamics they encounter through interactions with their professors and their peers. Findings underscore the pernicious nature of the neoliberalization of higher education in …

Knocking On Gelenbevī’S Door: A First Exploration Of The Epistemological Overcoming Of The Aristotelian Conception Of Metaphysical Modalities In The Thought Of IsmāʿĪl Gelenbevī (D. 1790/1 C.E.), Hisham Fahmy Al-Farrash Jan 2025

Knocking On Gelenbevī’S Door: A First Exploration Of The Epistemological Overcoming Of The Aristotelian Conception Of Metaphysical Modalities In The Thought Of IsmāʿĪl Gelenbevī (D. 1790/1 C.E.), Hisham Fahmy Al-Farrash

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a first exploration of the epistemological turn in metaphysical modalities within Arabic philosophy, particularly within its post-classical period (circa 1100 – 1900 C.E.), which is the turn that highlights the Arabic post-classical philosopher’s attempt(s) to overcome the Aristotelian conception of metaphysical modalities. I here focus on some linguistic, philosophical, and theological nuances of this turn, by synoptically comparing the conceptions of metaphysical modalities of Ismāʿīl Gelenbevī (d. 1790/91) and Aristotle (d. circa 322 B.C.) as two points of culmination in their respective tradition’s reflections on modalities, which is the comparison that presents Gelenbevī’s said conception for …

Revisiting The Diffusion Of Innovations Theory In The Digital Era: Adoption Of Artificial Intelligence In Social Media, Aliaa Khaled Elshabassy

Theses and Dissertations

The present study aims at revisiting the applicability of Rogers’ diffusion of innovations theory in the digital era, particularly in relation to recent advancements in Artificial Intelligence and their use in social media. The role of generational differences in influencing the adoption and non-adoption of these technologies is also explored. Drawing on the rich insights of qualitative data, the researcher adopts a multi-method approach comprising seventeen interviews with academic and professional experts and four focus group discussions among different generations to collect first-hand insights on AI adoption in the present time. AI was itself used for qualitative data analysis, including …

Unrwa And Palestinian Refugee-Ness: Material Bureaucracy And Political Potential, Paul James Jan 2025

Unrwa And Palestinian Refugee-Ness: Material Bureaucracy And Political Potential, Paul James

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the ways Palestine refugees and UNRWA engaged with the material objects of humanitarianism in the context of Palestinian displacement. In particular, the focus is on UNRWA’s basic ration program and the techniques of humanitarian governance illustrated by the use of ration cards that shaped and were shaped by the refugee population. The research asks how the ration card, as both a contested site of governmental rationality and object of political meaning-making, functioned as a technique for defining the Palestine refugee identity. To answer this question, the thesis draws on literature and conceptual work rooted in critiques of …

The hardnesses of the (Zr,Nb)C ceramics ranged from 19.1 to 20.2 GPa at a load of 9.81 N. The flexural strength increased from 352 to 395 MPa as the …

Anderson Transition For Light In A Three-Dimensional Random Medium, Alexey Yamilov, Hui Cao, Sergey E. Skipetrov Jan 2025

Anderson Transition For Light In A Three-Dimensional Random Medium, Alexey Yamilov, Hui Cao, Sergey E. Skipetrov

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study Anderson transition for light in three dimensions by performing large-scale simulations of electromagnetic wave transport in disordered ensembles of perfect-electric-conducting spatially overlapping spheres. A mobility edge that separates diffusive transport and Anderson localization is identified, revealing a sharp transition from diffusion to localization for light. Critical behavior in the vicinity of the mobility edge is well described by a single parameter scaling law. The critical exponent is found to be consistent with the value known for the Anderson transition of the orthogonal universality class. Statistical distribution of total transmission at the mobility edge is described without any fit …

Libraries As Community Bridges: A Global Journey, Chloe Vicente

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

This lecture reflects on the transformative role of libraries as cultural bridges in an increasingly interconnected world, through a comprehensive review and analysis of international library systems. Employing a qualitative methodology combining institutional ethnography with comparative case analysis across European, Asian, and Latin American contexts, the research examines how libraries work as catalysts for cross-cultural understanding. The investigation reveals four significant findings for libraries as dynamic cultural institutions: regional approaches to library service delivery, successful frameworks for balancing digital transformation with cultural preservation, emerging paradigms for international collaboration, and the critical importance of multilingual and multicultural competencies in modern libraries. …

Does College Guarantee Economic Mobility?: Incorporating Lost In-Kind Benefits Into The Calculation, Amy S. White Jan 2025

Does College Guarantee Economic Mobility?: Incorporating Lost In-Kind Benefits Into The Calculation, Amy S. White

Publications and Research

Average salaries of college graduates are higher than salaries of those without degrees. However, the experience of graduating and out-earning the income requirements for in-kind or entitlement benefits like Medicaid, public assistance, Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Plan, and/or Section 8 housing vouchers are not taken into consideration in any mobility calculation nor are students prepared to lose their benefits. Teaching at an urban commuter school in a financially disadvantage borough, I have identified a gap in the research literature and supportive services for these low-income students. This opinion piece further describes the problem and highlights areas for future action and research.

Exploring Pragmatic Functions And Linguistic Features Analysis For Some Terms Of Endearment In Egyptian Colloquial Arabic As Discourse Markers, Samar Abdeltawab Jan 2025

Exploring Pragmatic Functions And Linguistic Features Analysis For Some Terms Of Endearment In Egyptian Colloquial Arabic As Discourse Markers, Samar Abdeltawab

Theses and Dissertations

In Arabic and many languages, terms of endearment are used as discourse markers to express affection. However, their meanings differ depending on the pragmatic context in which they are said.

Despite the abundance of research on terms of endearment in various languages, there is a noticeable lack of studies examining the pragmatic functions and linguistic features of these terms in Arabic. This research aims to fill this gap by providing a comprehensive exploration of the pragmatic functions and investigating the syntactic and morphological characteristics of selected terms of endearment in Egyptian colloquial Arabic. It offers a detailed analysis of their …

Rethinking Rupture And Continuity: Al-Jarād And Khamāsīn, Two Poetry Magazines Of The Egyptian 1990s, Caroline Benson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis analyzes two Egyptian poetry magazines, al-Jarād and Khamāsīn, to enrich critical understanding of the Egyptian literary 1990s. It uses The Rules of Art: Genesis and Structure of the Literary Field (Les Règles de l’art: Genèse et structure du champ littéraire), Pierre Bourdieu’s 1992 sociological study of the literary field, as a theoretical framework. Numerous scholars have noted that the “nineties generation” is known for its aversion to politics, ideologies, and collectivities; its rupture with stylistic and thematic conventions of its predecessors; and its turn away from the “major issues” (al-qaḍāyah al-kubrā) of the …

Evaluation Of The Adoption Of World Health Organization 10-Group Classification System For Cesarean Section In Egyptian Hospitals, Reham Dewedar

Theses and Dissertations

Egypt has seen a significant rise in Cesarean Section (CS) deliveries over the past decade. While CS is a crucial procedure that can save lives when medically indicated, its misuse poses risks to both mothers and infants, including potential mortality. To address this issue, the WHO introduced the 10-Group Classification System (TGCS) in 2015 to standardize CS monitoring, aiming to prevent overuse or underuse of CS and to enable comparisons across health facilities and countries. This tool was introduced in Egypt through a training session conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2021.This study examines the effectiveness of this …

Unveiling The Public Sector Hold: Egyptian Women And Work-Life Balance, Safa Gadelhak

Theses and Dissertations

Educated women in Egypt view the public sector as their preferred employer, irrespective of their educational level or recent efforts towards women empowerment and the rise of digitization. This study attempts to understand the perceptions of working women, through analyzing their reasons whether prominent or underlying to make this career choice. To better understand this behavior, twenty semi-structured interviews and two focus group discussions were conducted with a total of thirty women from both public and private sectors. The findings revealed that women gravitate towards the public sector mainly because of five reasons: (a) convenient working conditions, (b) feeling stuck, …

A Framework To Harmonize Legal Provisions In Infrastructure Ppp Projects In Egypt Funded By Multilateral Development Banks, Menna Elkadi Jan 2025

A Framework To Harmonize Legal Provisions In Infrastructure Ppp Projects In Egypt Funded By Multilateral Development Banks, Menna Elkadi

Theses and Dissertations

Over the last decade, Egypt has witnessed an increase in the number of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects, specifically in infrastructure, as a result of the growing interest and popularity of various entities participating in such projects. Public infrastructure systems are no longer thought to be exclusively provided by the government; instead, the private sector’s contribution in the provision of such services is increasing. However, not every PPP program has been equally effective or has made the optimum use of planning and decision-making. The possibility of a project failure as a result of poor risk allocation is increased, if the potential …

Minor Role Iii: Youth Under Age 18 And New York City Violence, Jeffrey A. Butts, Gina Moreno

Publications and Research

Researchers at the John Jay College Research and Evaluation Center analyzed NYPD arrest data from 2006 to 2024 to assess trends in felony assault, felony robbery, and felony weapon offenses across age groups. The study examined whether New York’s “Raise the Age” law, which shifted most youth under 18 out of adult court, influenced violent crime patterns. Although arrests rose across all age groups following the COVID-19 pandemic, trends among youth under 18 generally mirrored those of older age groups. The findings suggest no clear evidence that the law caused a youth-specific increase in violent crime.

This review examines the incidence, clinical presentation, and outcomes of neurovascular complications in AAS patients. Common complications include stroke, spinal cord ischemia, and transient ischemic attacks, with stroke being the most prevalent. Managing aortic dissection necessitates careful blood pressure control to prevent dissection progression while avoiding compromised cerebral and spinal perfusion. Carotid involvement, particularly dissection, increases stroke and transient ischemic attack risks. Emergency surgical interventions, though essential to prevent rupture or repair dissection, carry risks of perioperative neurovascular complications. …

Obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D) increase cardiovascular risk, largely due to altered metabolic state. An early consequence of T2D/obesity is the loss of endothelial function and impaired nitric oxide (NO) signaling. In blood vessels, endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) synthesizes NO to maintain vessel homeostasis. The biological actions of NO are compromised by superoxide that is generated by NADPH oxidases (NOXs). Herein we investigated how altered metabolism affects superoxide/NO balance in obesity. We found that eNOS expression and NO bioavailability are significantly decreased in endothelial cells (ECs) from T2D patients and animal models of obesity. In parallel, PFKFB3, a …

Site Supervisor Roles And Responsibilities: Counseling Programs’ Written Expectations, Justin D. Lauka, Amanda Mccarthy, Steven Moody, Minna Yoo Jan 2025

Site Supervisor Roles And Responsibilities: Counseling Programs’ Written Expectations, Justin D. Lauka, Amanda Mccarthy, Steven Moody, Minna Yoo

Teaching and Supervision in Counseling

Site supervisors play a vital role in training clinical mental health counseling (CMHC) students during their field work. While clear roles and responsibilities for site supervision is a professional and ethical requirement, the scope of these expectations remains ambiguous. This article provides baseline empirical data on the expectations of sites and site supervisors communicated through field experience handbooks of CACREP-accredited CMHC programs. The authors completed a qualitative content analysis that resulted in three key categories including Site and Site Supervisor Administrative Expectations, Clinical Supervision, and Site/Program Interaction. Implications for counseling programs and future research are discussed.

Two Justifications For The Major Questions Doctrine, Cass R. Sunstein Jan 2025

Two Justifications For The Major Questions Doctrine, Cass R. Sunstein

Florida Law Review

There are two justifications for the major questions doctrine. The first justification, vigorously offered by Justice Neil Gorsuch, might be described as Lockean; it sees the doctrine as an effort to preserve legislative primacy and to reduce the policymaking authority of the executive branch. On the Lockean view, the major questions doctrine is a clear-statement principle, and it is in evident tension with textualism. The second justification, vigorously offered by Justice Amy Coney Barrett, might be described as Wittgensteinian; it sees the doctrine as an effort to capture Congress’s likely instructions. The Wittgensteinian justification fits comfortably with textualism, and it …

Supreme Court Litigators In The Age Of Textualism, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl Jan 2025

Supreme Court Litigators In The Age Of Textualism, Aaron-Andrew P. Bruhl

Florida Law Review

The Supreme Court’s approach to statutory interpretation has moved in a textualist direction over the last several decades, but there is little systematic information on how litigators’ briefing practices have changed during this era of textualist ascendancy. This Article examines thirty-five years’ worth of party briefs (over 8,000 briefs total), explores the briefs’ use of interpretive tools (including differences across categories of attorneys), and compares the briefs to the Court’s opinions. This examination yields several valuable findings. Although the briefs show a textualist shift, they differ from the Court’s opinions in a few ways. The magnitude of the textualist shift …
