The COVID-19 pandemic impacted administrative staff members throughout the school system in Texas. The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of high school administrative staff members who participated in the transition from a traditional high school education delivery environment to an online, distance-based education delivery environment during the COVID-19 pandemic. Self-determination theory was the theoretical foundation for this study and guided the research question and data analysis. The research design was a basic qualitative design using a generic qualitative approach. Purposeful sampling was used to recruit 10 participants from a pool of high school educators who worked …
Assessing The Influence Of An Eastern State's Disciplinary Alternative Education Program On Secondary Student Behavior, Alicia Michelle Gallaway
Assessing The Influence Of An Eastern State's Disciplinary Alternative Education Program On Secondary Student Behavior, Alicia Michelle Gallaway
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Services at the local disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP) include counseling and behavioral services to referred secondary students, aiming to improve their behavior. The problem addressed in this quantitative study was that a DAEP was in place in the local district since 2009, but there had been no formal assessment to determine whether differences in student discipline occurred in the semester before and the semester after students attended the DAEP. Guided by Bandura’s social cognitive theory, the purpose of this ex post facto, causal-comparative, quasi-experimental study was to investigate if there was a difference in student discipline as measured by …

The Experience Of Help Seeking For African American Pastors In Personal Crises, Jason Leon Hanna
The Experience Of Help Seeking For African American Pastors In Personal Crises, Jason Leon Hanna
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The U.S. population faces enormous challenges coping with disease, financial stress, failure, and general mental health concerns. Rather than seeking care from psychotherapists, increasing numbers of people in religious communities seek help from clergy, who must then balance the needs of their constituents while navigating their own personal crises and need for support. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the meaning of help-seeking for African American clergy during personal crises, guided by Ajzen’s theory of planned behavior. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 20 African American senior pastors of congregations in the United States. Study participants defined help-seeking …

Transient Temperature Measurements In A Ballistic Impact Experiment On A Thermoplastic Composite Material, Alexander I.G. Savadelis, Bryan E. Schmidt
Faculty Scholarship
Dynamic impact tests were conducted on thermoplastic composite laminates over an impact velocity range spanning the penetration velocity threshold, 88% of the penetration velocity, and 34% of the penetration velocity of the test panels. The primary objective was to record temperature increases that could affect the material properties of the composite during an impact event, and if so, provide guidance to predictive models which may account for such temperature rises. Observations from a combination of high-speed visible light photogrammetry coupled with high-speed infrared thermography indicate that it is highly unlikely that the composite reaches the glass transition temperature of 147°C …
Photogalvanic Shift Currents In Bifeo3-Lafeo3 Superlattices, Francesco Delodovici, Charles Paillard
Photogalvanic Shift Currents In Bifeo3-Lafeo3 Superlattices, Francesco Delodovici, Charles Paillard
Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations
Designing materials with a controlled photovoltaic response may lead to improved solar cells or photosensors. In this regard, ferroelectric superlattices have emerged as a rich platform to engineer functional properties. In addition, ferroelectrics are naturally endowed with a bulk photovoltaic response stemming from nonthermalized photoexcited carriers, which can overcome the fundamental limits of current solar cells. Yet, their photovoltaic output has been limited by poor optical absorption and poor charge collection or photoexcited carrier mean free path. We use Density Functional Theory and Wannierization to compute the so-called Bulk Photovoltaic shift current and the optical properties of BiFeO3/LaFeO3 superlattices. We …

Background: Previous studies in mouse, Xenopus and zebrafish embryos show strong tfap2e expression in progenitor cells of neuronal and neural crest tissues suggesting its involvement in neural crest specification. However, the role of human transcription factor activator protein 2 (TFAP2E) in human embryonic central nervous system (CNS), orofacial and maxillofacial development is unknown.
Methods: Through a collaborative work, exome survey was performed in families with congenital CNS, orofacial and maxillofacial anomalies. Exome variant prioritisation prompted TFAP2E gene for functional analysis in zebrafish embryos. Embryonic morphology and development were assessed after antisense morpholino (MO) knockdown (KD), CRISPR/Cas9 knockout and overexpression …

Recent trends indicate a concerning increase in early-onset atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) among younger individuals (men aged < 55 years women aged < 65 years). These findings highlight the pathobiology of ASCVD as a disease process that begins early in life and underscores the need for more tailored screening methods and preventive strategies. Increasing attention has been placed on the growing burden of traditional cardiometabolic risk factors in young individuals while also recognizing unique factors that mediate risk of pre-mature atherosclerosis in this demographic such as substance use, socioeconomic disparities, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and chronic inflammatory states that contribute to the increasing incidence of early ASCVD. Additionally, mounting evidence has pointed out significant disparities in the diagnosis and management of early ASCVD and cardiovascular outcomes based on sex and race. Moving towards a more personalized approach, emerging data and technological developments using diverse tools such as polygenic risk scores and coronary artery calcium scans have shown potential in earlier detection of ASCVD risk. Thus, we review current evidence on causal risk factors that drive the increase in early ASCVD and highlight emerging tools to improve ASCVD risk assessment in young individuals.
The Law Of Ai For Good, Orly Lobel
The Law Of Ai For Good, Orly Lobel
Florida Law Review
Legal policy and scholarship are increasingly focused on regulating technology to safeguard against risks and harms, neglecting the ways in which the law should direct the use of new technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), for positive purposes. This Article pivots the debates about automation, finding that the focus on AI wrongs is descriptively inaccurate because it undermines a balanced analysis of the benefits, potentials, and risks involved in digital technology. Further, the focus on AI wrongs is normatively and prescriptively flawed, as it narrows and distorts the law reforms currently dominating tech policy debates. The Law-of-AI-Wrongs focuses on reactive and …
Disrupting Creativity: Copyright Law In The Age Of Generative Artifical Intelligence, Ryan Abbott, Elizabeth Rothman
Disrupting Creativity: Copyright Law In The Age Of Generative Artifical Intelligence, Ryan Abbott, Elizabeth Rothman
Florida Law Review
Over the last few years, due largely to breakthroughs in deep learning technologies, artificial intelligence (AI) has begun to step into the shoes of human content generators and make valuable creative works at scale. Before the end of the decade, a significant amount of art, literature, music, software, and web content will likely be created by AI rather than traditional human authors. Yet the law lags behind this technological evolution by prohibiting copyright protection for AI-generated works. The predominant narrative holds that even if AI can automate creativity, this activity is not the right sort of thing to protect, and …

"Blurred Lines" On The "Stairway To Heaven": How The Sound Of Music Can Clarify Substantial Similarity In Music Copyright Cases, Lindsey O'Brien
Florida Law Review
Copyright law sits at the heart of the multibillion-dollar music industry. Recently, the Ninth Circuit has served as a common venue for resolving disputes between musical artists in alleged copyright infringement cases. However, the logic surrounding legal decisions is often contrary to the realities of the music industry, and results have been inconsistent even within the same circuit. The unpredictability of legal outcomes leaves the “best” standard for evaluating music copyright infringement unclear. This Note argues that, when considering copyright law’s historical underpinnings, a literal application of existing doctrine proves less-than-ideal in the context of music. The law’s emphasis on …
State Power And Anticompetitive Conduct, Gregory Day
State Power And Anticompetitive Conduct, Gregory Day
Florida Law Review
States can and do suppress competition when it harms marginalized communities. For example, states have monopolized prison markets, forcing society’s least powerful to pay high prices for medicine, snacks, and other goods. It is also common for states to organize licensing agencies who can protect incumbent interests by refusing to grant licenses to immigrant entrepreneurs such as African hair braiders, street vendors, and more. From current and historical perspectives, anticompetitive practices have quietly entailed one of the most effective methods of oppressing marginalized people. That said, states are exempted from antitrust review due to federalism, which concerns constitutional power sharing …

"It's A Sham!": How Sham Political Candidates Are Threatening Democracy, David B. Allen
Florida Law Review
By means of the U.S. election system, democracy in America is under attack—from within. If action is not taken, the public’s trust in elections will plummet to the lowest point in the history of this country. This Note brings to light a little-known political trick: sham political candidates. Political operatives place sham candidates on the ballot to siphon votes from opposing candidates. And the most shocking fact of it all is that it is completely legal. This Note identifies how sham candidates have impacted the modern election, while also examining the history of U.S. elections and election laws. This Note …
Adversary Democratic Due Process, Martin H. Redish, Victor Hiltner
Adversary Democratic Due Process, Martin H. Redish, Victor Hiltner
Florida Law Review
Legal minds have long quarreled over the true meaning of the Due Process Clauses of the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments, but little consensus has emerged as to their scope and application. Despite the doctrinal significance and ubiquity of due process, scholars have devoted troublingly little attention to the underlying premises or “DNA” of this fundamental constitutional right. Consequently, litigants’ claims to adjudicatory procedures have been consistently undervalued on the myopic utilitarian scale of costs and benefits that has imposed a chokehold on current doctrine, and no viable alternative approach has emerged to take its place. This Article seeks to fill …

Travel to and from distant cancer treatment facilities can place a significant burden on cancer patients, particularly rural and minority survivors. Thus, the purpose of our investigation was to examine the association between patient travel distance and delays in types of treatment for breast cancer (surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and hormonal therapy) and treatment delays. Using a novel linkage between the state cancer registry and administrative data from Medicaid and a private insurance plan, 2155 BC patients were successfully linked to create the cohort. ArcGIS was used to geocode all case residences and treatment facility addresses and calculate network distance between …

Carbon monoxide (CO) oxidising microorganisms are present in volcanic deposits throughout succession, with levels of vegetation and soil influencing the communities present. Carboxydovores are a subset of CO oxidisers that use CO as an energy source, which raises questions about the physiological and metabolic features that make them more competitive in harsh volcanic ecosystems. To address these questions, samples were taken from volcanic strata formed by eruptions from Calbuco Volcano (Chile) in 2015 (tephra) and 1917 (soil). Two carboxydovore members of the Burkholderiaceae family were isolated for further study to elucidate the benefits of carboxydovory for the survival of these …

Adaptive immune resistance in cancer describes the various mechanisms by which tumors adapt to evade anti-tumor immune responses. IFN-γ induction of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) was the first defined and validated adaptive immune resistance mechanism. The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is central to adaptive immune resistance as immune modulatory secreted and integral membrane proteins are dependent on ER. Sigma1 is a unique ligand-regulated integral membrane scaffolding protein enriched in the ER of cancer cells. PD-L1 is an integral membrane glycoprotein that is translated into the ER and processed through the cellular secretory pathway. At the cell surface, PD-L1 is an immune …

While all native tRNAs undergo extensive post-transcriptional modifications as a mechanism to regulate gene expression, mapping these modifications remains challenging. The critical barrier is the difficulty of readthrough of modifications by reverse transcriptases (RTs). Here we use Induro-a new group-II intron-encoded RT-to map and quantify genome-wide tRNA modifications in Induro-tRNAseq. We show that Induro progressively increases readthrough over time by selectively overcoming RT stops without altering the misincorporation frequency. In a parallel analysis of Induro vs. a related RT, we provide comparative datasets to facilitate the prediction of each modification. We assess tRNA modifications across five human cell lines and …

CD44, a pivotal cell surface molecule, plays a crucial role in many cellular functions, including cell-cell interactions, adhesion, and migration. It serves as a receptor for hyaluronic acid and is involved in lymphocyte activation, recirculation, homing, and hematopoiesis. Moreover, CD44 is a commonly used cancer stem cell marker associated with tumor progression and metastasis. The development of CD44 aptamers that specifically target CD44 can be utilized to target CD44-positive cells, including cancer stem cells, and for drug delivery. Building on the primary sequences of our previously selected thioaptamers (TAs) and observed variations, we developed a bead-based X-aptamer (XA) library by …

The Qualitative Report
The integration of corpora into language teaching appears to be lacking, raising the question of whether this omission is due to teachers intentionally choosing not to use corpora in their classes or a lack of awareness and knowledge about these tools. This study of teachers in Indonesia aimed to explore two research questions: (a) what are the teachers' initial perceptions regarding corpus linguistics, and (b) do the teachers intend to integrate corpora into classroom instruction? Fifteen secondary and tertiary-level teachers participated in this qualitative study. Researchers gave the teachers a brief presentation on corpora to develop their Corpus Literacy (CL) …
