'When The State Looks At You': Administering Whiteness Through Surveillance, Affect, And Efficiency In Elementary Literacy Teaching, Michael J. Young Feb 2025

'When The State Looks At You': Administering Whiteness Through Surveillance, Affect, And Efficiency In Elementary Literacy Teaching, Michael J. Young

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Elementary literacy education policy continues to centre intensified use of standardised testing in the early elementary grades across the United States. The increase of datafication in schooling works to establish a surveillance system in schools. Including analysis through the lenses of Foucauldian disciplinary power and critical whiteness studies, this qualitative article examines teacher narratives from five white elementary literacy teachers. Through these narratives, these teachers share their lived experiences in navigating school reforms involving increased datafication. Findings highlight the affective technologies and colonial discursive constructions white teachers employed through this surveillance and how literacy and literacy teaching were shaped through …

Supportive care needs were measured at baseline, then at 3-, 12-, and 24-month post-baseline across five domains (‘psychological’, ‘physical and daily living’, ‘health systems and information’, ‘patient care and support’, ‘sexuality’) using the Supportive …

A Living Feminist Postdevelopmental Lexicon For Early Education, Mindy Blaise, Veronica Pacini-Ketchabaw Feb 2025

A Living Feminist Postdevelopmental Lexicon For Early Education, Mindy Blaise, Veronica Pacini-Ketchabaw

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Expanding the important body of work that addresses child development’s limitations and responding to the ecological crisis that threatens the future of life on Earth, this article proposes a living feminist postdevelopmental lexicon. The lexicon introduces 26 concepts that together challenge the theory/practice divide, disrupt Cartesian modes of subjectivity, reorient taken-for-granted ideas as problematic in early education, open up early education to inquiries that respond to the political and ethical questions of our milieu, and generate conditions for creative, inventive, thoughtful, and ethical projects. The paper invites readers to engage with and creatively add to the lexicon, making it an …

Effects Of Applicants' Use Of Generative Ai In Personnel Selection: Towards A More Nuanced View?, Filip Lievens, Patrick D. Dunlop Feb 2025

Effects Of Applicants' Use Of Generative Ai In Personnel Selection: Towards A More Nuanced View?, Filip Lievens, Patrick D. Dunlop

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Generative AI (GenAI) has made rapid inroads in assessment, as a growing number of applicants rely on it as a coach in unproctored assessments of various selection procedures. This had led to assertions that applicants' GenAI use undermines key assumptions of the predictive model underlying selection and is thus disruptive for organizations' current unproctored assessments, thereby invoking various strategies of organizations to deter and detect its use. In this provocation article, we present a more nuanced view. To this end, we start by reviewing the recent research related to the effects of applicants' use of GenAI in assessment and discuss …

Looking Out For Danger: Theoretical And Empirical Issues In Translating Human Attention Bias Tasks To Assess Animal Affective States, Sarah Kappel, Sarah Collins, Michael Mendl, Carole Fureix Feb 2025

Looking Out For Danger: Theoretical And Empirical Issues In Translating Human Attention Bias Tasks To Assess Animal Affective States, Sarah Kappel, Sarah Collins, Michael Mendl, Carole Fureix

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Understanding animal emotional (affective) state is highly relevant to various disciplines (e.g., animal welfare, neuroscience, comparative psychology), and has been significantly advanced by translating affect-induced cognitive bias paradigms rooted in human psychology to non-human animal studies. Attention bias (i.e., preferential attention allocation, AB) tests are increasingly used as more practical substitutes to commonly used judgement bias tests. Yet, evidence that AB reflects affective valence in animals is still limited. We review in-depth the concept of attention and AB described in humans and discuss utilising human-derived AB paradigms for measuring animal affective states. We describe key concepts and functions of attention …

How Managers ‘Make Meaning’ Of Business Tournament Rituals, David Sarpong, Shadrack Asante, Christopher Agyapong Siaw, Nicholas O'Regan, Derrick Boakye Feb 2025

How Managers ‘Make Meaning’ Of Business Tournament Rituals, David Sarpong, Shadrack Asante, Christopher Agyapong Siaw, Nicholas O'Regan, Derrick Boakye

Plymouth Business School

In this paper, we examine how managers ‘make meaning’ of business tournament rituals (BTRs)— recognition-based contests in which participating firms get social endorsements and winners receive prestigious awards. In exploring two UK BTRs, we found that managerial orienting systems, made up of beliefs about the identity of their firm, competitors, and customers, and what it takes to compete in their environments, drive managers to compete in BTRs. Their interpretive view of BTRs as sources of strategic capabilities and hard market power, we argue, is constructed, and projected to the viewing public through a set of four distinct but ‘durationally indivisible’ …

Families of children requiring medical treatment at 6 months showed signs of adaption to daily care …

Information Spillover And Corporate Policies: The Case Of Listed Options, Gennaro Bernile, Jianfeng Hu, Guangzhong Li, Roni Michaely Feb 2025

Information Spillover And Corporate Policies: The Case Of Listed Options, Gennaro Bernile, Jianfeng Hu, Guangzhong Li, Roni Michaely

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Information production associated with derivatives markets is not a sideshow; rather, it has significantly positive spillover effects on an array of corporate decisions of underlying firms. Using a regression-discontinuity design based on exogenous variation in options availability as an instrument for changes in the information environment, we show that options introductions have causal effects on corporate policies on both sides of the balance sheet. Through improved information efficiency, options availability reduces the need for debt and payout, increases efficient investment, and yields superior innovation. We conduct two independent experiments demonstrating that our instrument s impact is not derived from alternative …

Consumption Responses To Income Shocks Through Lottery Winning, Seonghoon Kim, Kanghyock Koh Feb 2025

Consumption Responses To Income Shocks Through Lottery Winning, Seonghoon Kim, Kanghyock Koh

Research Collection School Of Economics

We study the effects of lottery winning on consumption spending using newly available household survey data in Singapore. We find strong consumption responses to a transitory income shock via lottery wins. Lottery winners spend about half of their prizes within 12 months of winning. We show that consumption responses are stronger among households with more binding liquidity constraints and less risk aversion, which is consistent with the standard life-cycle model. The strong consumption response suggests that fiscal stimulus policies or other public transfer programs could be an effective means of boosting consumption spending of the economy in the short run.

Something In The Air: Does Air Pollution Affect Fund Managers’ Carbon Divestment?, Thanh Huynh, Frank Weikai Li, Ying Xia Feb 2025

Something In The Air: Does Air Pollution Affect Fund Managers’ Carbon Divestment?, Thanh Huynh, Frank Weikai Li, Ying Xia

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We examine whether fund managers overestimate carbon risk when they are exposed to local air pollution. We find that air pollution causes managers to underweight stocks of high-emission firms. The effects are stronger for less salient scopes of carbon emissions, among managers located in pro-environmental states, and among those likely to be surprised by air pollution—consistent with the idea that managers revise their beliefs about climate-transition risk following their exposure to air pollution. Carbon-intensive stocks sold by managers who are exposed to air pollution subsequently outperform stocks that they buy, suggesting that such underweighting is costly to fund investors.

It's Just A Game! Effects Of Fantasy In A Storified Test On Applicant Reactions, Marie L. Ohlms, Klaus G. Melchers, Filip Lievens Feb 2025

It's Just A Game! Effects Of Fantasy In A Storified Test On Applicant Reactions, Marie L. Ohlms, Klaus G. Melchers, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

There is increasing attention to storification of assessments (i.e., embedding a storyline into a non-storified assessment) in research and practice and to gamified and game-based assessment in general. However, there is a surprising lack of agreement and of recommendations regarding what level of fantasy of the storyline one should choose for the storification from the perspective of applicant reactions. A distinction is typically made between fantasy (e.g., fighting aliens) and realistic (e.g., workday simulations) storylines, with both choices having their advantages and disadvantages. In this study, a sample of 195 participants was shown either a storified realistic test, a storified …

A Head-To-Head Comparison Of Situational Judgment Tests And Assessment Centers For Measuring And Predicting The Same Performance Dimensions, Iman Shakeri, Filip Lievens Feb 2025

A Head-To-Head Comparison Of Situational Judgment Tests And Assessment Centers For Measuring And Predicting The Same Performance Dimensions, Iman Shakeri, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

To date, a limited set of studies have compared the criterion-related validity of low-fidelity (SJT) versus high-fidelity (AC) simulations for predicting job performance. Unfortunately, these studies validated these simulations through the overall assessment rating (OAR) instead of on the basis of specific dimensions. Given SJTs and ACs were compared that measured different dimensions, our understanding of the relative and comparative validity of these assessment approaches in measuring the same set of dimensions is still limited. Therefore, this study aims to conduct a head-to-head comparison of the criterion-related validity of the AC and the SJT (and their incremental validity) while keeping …

Retirement And Organizations: Advocating Organizational Responsibility For Retirement In Practice And Scholarship, Valerie Caines, Gokhan Ertug, Prashant Bordia, Deidra J. Schleicher Feb 2025

Retirement And Organizations: Advocating Organizational Responsibility For Retirement In Practice And Scholarship, Valerie Caines, Gokhan Ertug, Prashant Bordia, Deidra J. Schleicher

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this editorial we discuss organizations’ role in the process of retirement. We argue that organizations have abdicated their moral obligation to older workers, thereby negatively impacting older workers’ wellbeing and their successful transition to retirement. We also note that organizational studies scholars have not paid adequate attention to that negligence, or its alternatives. We suggest that, among other reasons, this oversight can be a result of the comparatively privileged socioeconomic positions of faculty in business schools vis-à-vis older workers in many other occupations, as well as to a discord between traditional human capital and human resource management theories and …

The Boundaries Of The Law: Can Us Private Enforcement Discipline Foreign Firms?, Massimo Massa, Xiaoqiao Wang, Bohui Zhang, Hong Zhang Feb 2025

The Boundaries Of The Law: Can Us Private Enforcement Discipline Foreign Firms?, Massimo Massa, Xiaoqiao Wang, Bohui Zhang, Hong Zhang

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Existing studies tend to focus on how a legal system reinforces the efficiency of its domestic firms or foreign companies that are subject to its domestic jurisdiction (e.g., via cross-listing). Our study provides critical normative implications in the era of financial globalization by showing that the influence of a country’s legal institutions extend beyond its territorial boundaries. We examine whether US shareholder-initiated class action lawsuits can discipline non-US firms. Using an international sample of firms over the period 1994–2019, we find that a US class action lawsuit against a non-US firm cross-listed in the US negatively affects the value of …

Coevolution Of Soes And The Chinese Economy: The Roles Of Soe Heterogeneity From The Institutional, Strategic, And Organizational Perspectives, Kenneth G. Huang, Runtian Jing, Jun Xia, Man Zhang, Weiguo Zhong, David Zhu Feb 2025

Coevolution Of Soes And The Chinese Economy: The Roles Of Soe Heterogeneity From The Institutional, Strategic, And Organizational Perspectives, Kenneth G. Huang, Runtian Jing, Jun Xia, Man Zhang, Weiguo Zhong, David Zhu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

State-owned enterprises (SOEs) in China play a critical role in national economic development and the country's positioning on the global stage. Chinese SOEs have undergone substantial transformations from traditional government-run entities to a variety of corporate forms exhibiting different levels of state involvement. Despite their substantial influence, the internal diversity of SOEs – from wholly state-owned to mixed-ownership – has not been thoroughly examined. This paper provides an overview of SOEs' critical roles in the Chinese economy, the relationship between SOEs and privately owned enterprises (POEs), and the challenges of SOEs in different stages of Chinese economic development. It then …

When Leaders Self-Sacrifice In Times Of Crisis: The Roles Of Employee Emotional Suppression And Leader Coping Strategies, Xingyu Wang, Xueqi Wen, Zihan Liu, Yixing Lisa Gao, Juan M. Madera Feb 2025

When Leaders Self-Sacrifice In Times Of Crisis: The Roles Of Employee Emotional Suppression And Leader Coping Strategies, Xingyu Wang, Xueqi Wen, Zihan Liu, Yixing Lisa Gao, Juan M. Madera

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

While literature articulates the relevance of self-sacrificial leadership to crisis situations, little attention has been paid to employees’ attitudinal and behavioral responses to self-sacrificial leadership. This is a particularly salient gap in the scholarship, given the decisions leaders must make to address challenges in the hospitality industry (e.g., the COVID-19 pandemic). Drawing on conservation of resources theory, this pair of field and experimental studies examines how individual differences in employee emotional suppression and leader coping strategy moderate the impacts of self-sacrificial leadership on employee perceptions of leader effectiveness. By sampling U.S. hospitality employees, the studies reveal that leaders who display …

Geographic Distance And State's Grip: Information Asymmetry, State Inattention, And Firm Implementation Of State Policy, Xiyi Yang, Heli Wang, Xiaoyu Zhou Feb 2025

Geographic Distance And State's Grip: Information Asymmetry, State Inattention, And Firm Implementation Of State Policy, Xiyi Yang, Heli Wang, Xiaoyu Zhou

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In this study, we develop the argument that geographic distance between the state and local governments undermines the state's capacity to influence the implementation of state policies by local organizations. Drawing from information economics and the attention-based view, we propose that physical distance reduces the state's monitoring effectiveness through two interrelated mechanisms: information asymmetry and state leaders' inattention to distant issues. Using data of Chinese public firms' implementation of environmental activities between 2008 and 2016, we find that firms conduct fewer environmental activities required by the state when they are regulated by local governments that are more geographically distant to …

Island Platforms And The Hyper-Terrestrialisation Of Singapore's Smart City-State, Orlando Woods, Tim Bunnell, Lily Kong Feb 2025

Island Platforms And The Hyper-Terrestrialisation Of Singapore's Smart City-State, Orlando Woods, Tim Bunnell, Lily Kong

Research Collection College of Integrative Studies

This paper foregrounds the importance of underlying territorial formations in realising a vision of the smart city. It argues that as a political technology of the state, territory should be understood as a platform upon which data works and the smart city unfolds. In this view, island territories – of which bordered city-states like Singapore provide paradigmatic examples – provide an integral, yet hitherto unexplored, component in the realisation of urban “smartness”. We illustrate these theoretical arguments through an analysis of how the territorial constraints that characterise Singapore’s island platform enable the state to accurately and effectively realise its vision …

Neural Processes Of Emotional Conflict Detection And Prediction Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Clusters In Traumatic Injury Survivors, Kaley E. Davis, Carissa W. Tomas, Kate E. Webb, Ashley A. Huggins, Terri A. Deroon-Cassini, Christine L. Larson, Jacklynn M. Fitzgerald Feb 2025

Neural Processes Of Emotional Conflict Detection And Prediction Of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Clusters In Traumatic Injury Survivors, Kaley E. Davis, Carissa W. Tomas, Kate E. Webb, Ashley A. Huggins, Terri A. Deroon-Cassini, Christine L. Larson, Jacklynn M. Fitzgerald

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Objective: Given the prevalence and significant burden of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), identifying early predictors of symptom development following trauma is critical. PTSD is a heterogeneous disorder comprised of distinct symptom clusters-reexperiencing, avoidance, negative mood, and hyperarousal-that contribute to the broad range of possible symptom profiles. Affective and attentional regulation processes, such as emotional conflict detection, are impaired in individuals with PTSD; however, the neural mechanisms underlying these alterations and their predictive utility for the development of PTSD symptoms remain unclear.

Method: Traumatic injury survivors (N = 49) without traumatic brain injury were recruited from the emergency department of …

Covid-19-Related Risk, Resilience, And Mental Health Among Mexican American Mothers Across The First Year Of The Pandemic, Amy L. Non, Elizabeth S. Clausing, Sandraluz Lara-Cinisomo, Kimberly D'Anna-Hernandez Feb 2025

Covid-19-Related Risk, Resilience, And Mental Health Among Mexican American Mothers Across The First Year Of The Pandemic, Amy L. Non, Elizabeth S. Clausing, Sandraluz Lara-Cinisomo, Kimberly D'Anna-Hernandez

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Background

Latina mothers have been especially affected by the pandemic and historically exhibit high rates of depression and anxiety. However, few longitudinal studies have assessed the effect of the pandemic on this vulnerable population. We hypothesized that COVID-19-related stressors would associate with psychological distress among Latina mothers across the first year of the pandemic.

Methods

We investigated COVID-19-related impact, stigma, and fears across two critical time points and changes in these measures in relation to changes in maternal anxiety and depression among mothers of Mexican descent living in Southern California (n=152). Surveys were administered within 5–16 weeks of …

A Study On The Psychometric Properties Of The Chinese Version Of The Parent Tic Questionnaire, Qiang Ding, Douglas W. Woods, Kathryn E. Barber, Wen Xu, Ying Zhao, Shuqin Shen, Jinhua Sun

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Introduction

The Parent Tic Questionnaire (PTQ) is a tool for parents to assess their child’s tic severity, but its effectiveness in non-Western contexts like China has not been thoroughly examined. This study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of the PTQ in assessing motor and vocal tic severity among Chinese children diagnosed with tic disorders.

Method

Parents of 268 Chinese children and adolescents aged 6–17 years, diagnosed with tic disorders, completed the PTQ. The study assessed tic severity using the Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) and PTQ. Additionally, obsessive-compulsive symptoms were measured using the Children Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale …

Functional And Effective Eeg Connectivity Patterns In Alzheimer’S Disease And Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Systematic Review, Elizabeth Paitel, Christian B. Otteman, Mary C. Polking, Henry J. Licht, Kristy A. Nielson Feb 2025

Functional And Effective Eeg Connectivity Patterns In Alzheimer’S Disease And Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Systematic Review, Elizabeth Paitel, Christian B. Otteman, Mary C. Polking, Henry J. Licht, Kristy A. Nielson

Psychology Faculty Research and Publications

Background:

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) might be best conceptualized as a disconnection syndrome, such that symptoms may be largely attributable to disrupted communication between brain regions, rather than to deterioration within discrete systems. EEG is uniquely capable of directly and non-invasively measuring neural activity with precise temporal resolution; connectivity quantifies the relationships between such signals in different brain regions. EEG research on connectivity in AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), often considered a prodromal phase of AD, has produced mixed results and has yet to be synthesized for comprehensive review. Thus, we performed a systematic review of EEG connectivity in MCI …

A Wayfarer, Roselyle Hang Zhao Feb 2025

A Wayfarer, Roselyle Hang Zhao

Theses

This paper examines the making of A Wayfarer, a personal film that explores themes of identity, cultural belonging, and the experience of being a third-culture individual. The character Boaty represents the complexities of navigating multiple identities, as the film blends visual and sound design to convey the feeling of being "lost-in-culture." As part of my graduate thesis at the Rochester Institute of Technology, the film blends visual and sound design to convey the feeling of being "lost-in-culture." The paper discusses the creative choices behind the shift from humor to vulnerability, the challenges of depicting family dynamics, and the process of …

Qultsf: Long-Term Time Series Forecasting With Quantum Machine Learning, Hari Hara Suthan Chittoor, Paul Robert Griffin, Ariel Neufeld, Jayne Thompson, Mile Gu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Long-term time series forecasting (LTSF) involves predicting a large number of future values of a time series based on the past values. This is an essential task in a wide range of domains including weather forecasting, stock market analysis and disease outbreak prediction. Over the decades LTSF algorithms have transitioned from statistical models to deep learning models like transformer models. Despite the complex architecture of transformer based LTSF models ‘Are Transformers Effective for Time Series Forecasting? (Zeng et al., 2023)’ showed that simple linear models can outperform the state-of-the-art transformer based LTSF models. Recently, quantum machine learning (QML) is evolving …

Why Are Fairness Concerns So Important? Lessons From A Last-Mile Transportation System, Yiwei Chen, Hai Wang Feb 2025

Why Are Fairness Concerns So Important? Lessons From A Last-Mile Transportation System, Yiwei Chen, Hai Wang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

The Last-Mile Problem refers to the provision of travel service for passengers from the nearest public transportation node to the final destination. The Last-Mile Transportation System (LMTS), which has recently emerged, provides on-demand last-mile transportation service for passengers. We consider an LMTS that consists of two types of passengers, regular-type passengers and special-type passengers (e.g., seniors, disabled people). The valuation of the last-mile service for special-type passengers is statistically higher than the one for regular-type passengers. Passengers incur disutility from waiting for the last-mile service. In this paper, we explore two fairness constraints on special-type passengers: (1) the fare for …

Stack Overflow is one of the most influential Software Question & Answer (SQA) websites, hosting millions of programming-related questions and answers. Tags play a critical role in efficiently organizing the contents on Stack Overflow and are vital to support various site operations, such as querying relevant content. Poorly chosen tags often lead to issues such as tag ambiguity and tag explosion. Therefore, a precise and accurate automated tag recommendation technique is needed. Inspired by the recent success of pre-trained models (PTMs) in natural language processing (NLP), we present PTM4Tag+, a tag recommendation framework for Stack Overflow posts that utilize PTMs …

Exploring & Exploiting High-Order Graph Structure For Sparse Knowledge Graph Completion, Tao He, Ming Liu, Yixin Cao, Zekun Wang, Zihao Zheng, Bing Qin Feb 2025

Exploring & Exploiting High-Order Graph Structure For Sparse Knowledge Graph Completion, Tao He, Ming Liu, Yixin Cao, Zekun Wang, Zihao Zheng, Bing Qin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Sparse Knowledge Graph (KG) scenarios pose a challenge for previous Knowledge Graph Completion (KGC) methods, that is, the completion performance decreases rapidly with the increase of graph sparsity. This problem is also exacerbated because of the widespread existence of sparse KGs in practical applications. To alleviate this challenge, we present a novel framework, LR-GCN, that is able to automatically capture valuable long-range dependency among entities to supplement insufficient structure features and distill logical reasoning knowledge for sparse KGC. The proposed approach comprises two main components: a GNN-based predictor and a reasoning path distiller. The reasoning path distiller explores high-order graph …
