Fordham Law Review

Four U.S. states recently took diametrically opposed approaches to address fundamental problems that their respective state legislatures identified in the online speech environment. While controversial legislation in Florida and Texas sought to limit the ability of platforms to remove users or content, New York and California passed laws ultimately aimed at curbing hate speech and other forms of abuse on platforms. In isolation, each of these legislative approaches raises significant First Amendment concerns, and all are likely insufficient to address the problems posed by online speech. But what if the impetus behind these laws were combined into a unified regulatory …

Mycoplasma Hominis–Associated Septic Arthritis Masquerading As Gouty Arthritis, Angelina Liddy, Carolyn Kramer, Devin M. Weber Mar 2025

Mycoplasma Hominis–Associated Septic Arthritis Masquerading As Gouty Arthritis, Angelina Liddy, Carolyn Kramer, Devin M. Weber

Division of Infectious Diseases and Environmental Medicine Faculty Papers

Septic arthritis caused by M. hominis is exceptionally rare. Here, we report on a 62-year-old man with a medical history of gout and renal cell carcinoma who presented with persistent knee pain and swelling following partial nephrectomy complicated by an abdominal abscess. Arthrocentesis revealed monosodium urate crystals, leading to the initial diagnosis and treatment of gouty arthritis using intra-articular steroid injections, allopurinol, and colchicine. Initial cultures yielded no growth. However, faint transparent colonies grew after discharge, which were eventually identified as M. hominis. Initial antibacterial therapy targeting suspect Mycoplasma spp. was begun with doxycycline, and the patient ultimately completed 12 …

Deprescribing: The Skill Of Less Pills, Vivian L. Villarreal Mar 2025

Deprescribing: The Skill Of Less Pills, Vivian L. Villarreal

Cohort XIII

Background: Polypharmacy is a growing concern in geriatric medical care, increasing the risk of adverse drug events (ADEs), cognitive decline, falls, and hospitalizations. Multiple prescriptions result in potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs), leading to a prescribing cascade and medication overload for many patients. Numerous medications are deemed unnecessary or not appropriate, decreasing the quality of life. The lack of standardized deprescribing tools in clinical practice contributes to continued polypharmacy-related complications. The " project, was implemented at a PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) facility to improve medication management, patient safety, and quality of life through structured deprescribing interventions.

Voter F̶R̶A̶U̶D̶ Mistake, Benjamin Plener Cover Mar 2025

Voter F̶R̶A̶U̶D̶ Mistake, Benjamin Plener Cover

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

False narratives challenging electoral integrity often cite ineligible voting as a prime example of so-called widespread voter fraud. This Article demonstrates that ineligible voting often consists of mistakes that are problematically treated like fraud. Some jurisdictions criminalize ineligible voting on a strict liability basis, imposing punishment even when the ineligible voter is unaware of her ineligibility. When jurisdictions impose this strict criminal liability, mistakes are often misunderstood or misrepresented as fraud. This harsh and confused treatment of voter mistake undermines the criminal justice system by severing criminality from culpability, punishing good faith democratic participation, targeting marginalized populations, and amplifying systemic …

The Devil Wears Dupes: Legal Implications Of “Dupe Culture” In The Fashion Industry And How Trademark Law Should Adapt, Alexis Theoharidis Mar 2025

The Devil Wears Dupes: Legal Implications Of “Dupe Culture” In The Fashion Industry And How Trademark Law Should Adapt, Alexis Theoharidis

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

The proliferation of dupes in the fashion industry—affordable imitations of high-end designs—has created a complex intersection of intellectual property challenges, ethical concerns, and consumer behavior shifts. While dupes democratize fashion by providing low-cost access to high-end aesthetics, they undermine brand integrity, dilute designer creativity, and exacerbate labor and environmental issues tied to fast fashion. Current trademark law, centered on the Lanham Act, insufficiently addresses these challenges, particularly when dupes avoid direct counterfeiting and exploit legal gray areas. This article critiques the limitations of existing protections, evaluates alternative legal reforms, including updates to anti-dilution provisions and the use of blockchain technology, …

Principles For The Design Of Visual Progress Bars To Improve Motivation In Online Learning, Tania Shotts Williams Mar 2025

Principles For The Design Of Visual Progress Bars To Improve Motivation In Online Learning, Tania Shotts Williams

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

Progress bars are used in many user interfaces to indicate user progress or wait time. Their main role is to set user expectations, and they can be auditory or visual. The use of visual progress bars is found in many applications, including games and is accepted as a strategy for gamifying user experiences. However, little research exists regarding the design of this tool, especially in how to leverage design elements to impact motivational affordance. Since progress bars are an element to gamify user interfaces, it benefits researchers and designers to have a deeper understanding of how to design the tool …

Building Skills Now For Asean’S Future, Shoeb Kagda

Asian Management Insights

Upskilling of workers is critical for building a more resilient workforce and future-proofing economic growth. Upskilling has become a buzzword for governments across the region as they gear up to boost economic growth and improve productivity. A confluence of factors such as digitalisation, automation, and artificial intelligence is heralding a new age where these elements have become powerful drivers of economic success. There is enormous potential for Southeast Asia, which is home to the third largest labour force in the world and has a relatively young population, to upskill its workers. Historically a region that has depended on low-skilled manufacturing …

Wingspan: Taking Digital Learning To New Heights, Adam Tatarynowicz, Wee-Kiat Lim, Mahima Rao-Kachroo

Asian Management Insights

How an internal learning platform became a market success. Launched in April 2018, the learning experience platform (LXP) Wingspan was the brainchild of Infosys Co-Founder and Chairman Nandan Nilekani. He had observed that several critical trends were reshaping the world economy. For instance, digital natives were increasingly expecting the learning environment at their workplace to be available 24/7. The late 2000s were also a time when Infosys’ corporate clients had just started on their digital transformation journey. Hence, capturing talent and market share was a strategic priority for the company. In contrast, the learning delivery landscape at Infosys then was …

Social Mobility: What We Haven’T Talked About, Jacinth Tan Mar 2025

Social Mobility: What We Haven’T Talked About, Jacinth Tan

Asian Management Insights

More balanced understanding may curb unintended negative outcomes. While social mobility provides opportunities for a better life and societal progress, it can also lead to significant challenges, including burnout from hypercompetitive environments, feelings of isolation due to cultural mismatches, and self-blame stemming from the myth of meritocracy. Strengthening social safety nets and providing supportive environments in educational institutions and workplaces can help mitigate the unintended psychological and social costs of mobility. A nuanced approach to social mobility that acknowledges external systemic and psychological barriers, and fosters inclusivity, is necessary to ensure upward mobility benefits society while lowering the risk of …

A Preliminary Report Of The Carotenoid Assessment In Adults 50 Years Of Age And Older In Louisiana, Mary-Catherine Feazell

Master's Theses

Fruits and vegetables are at the core of a healthy, balanced diet. They assist in preventing the development of chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer (Fadnes, et al., 2022). Aging is a natural biological process followed by disease, cognitive impairment, and a natural decline of the body’s ability to perform at its best. The older adult population is currently the fastest-growing population globally (El-Shebiney et al., 2022). Vitamin A is crucial for several parts of the body to function correctly. Despite the positive effects of Vitamin A on the body, the recommended dietary intake is not …

Learning Lessons From Hard Truths: School Shootings, Devin Watson Mar 2025

Learning Lessons From Hard Truths: School Shootings, Devin Watson

South Carolina Association for Middle Level Education Journal

The American school system is plagued by violent attacks such as school shootings. Unfortunately, these events are incredibly difficult to predict. The security used for these schools is often found lacking and students aren’t getting the help needed. Part of the issue is the internal struggle of students in tough situations and teachers not being trained properly to help them. School security is more than just something at the gate. It’s about creating a safe environment that students can find sanctuary in. The solution is to provide better training for teachers and updating the physical security of the school.

Effect Of Social Determinants Of Health On Clinic Visit Attendance In Patients With Hemophilia, Shailly Gaur, Brian Lee Phd, Mph, James Anderst Md, Msci, Katie Foote Lscsw, Lcsw, Osw-C, Andrea Bradley-Ewing Mpa, Ma, Shannon L. Carpenter

Posters

Background Social determinants of health (SDOH) create barriers to seeking care regularly, especially for patients with chronic disease. Patients with moderate-severe hemophilia A and B (factor 8 and 9 deficiencies respectively) have a life-long higher risk of bleeding and require chronic therapies. Specialized care is offered through hemophilia treatment centers (HTCs); however, these can be difficult to access for some individuals. Previous SDOH research in this patient population has been limited; therefore, it can be difficult to identify the barriers to care that exist. There is a need to examine SDOH more thoroughly to create patient-directed interventions to improve access …

Fragility And Strength In Times Of War: A Series Of Embroidered Watercolors, Alisha B. Whitman Mar 2025

Fragility And Strength In Times Of War: A Series Of Embroidered Watercolors, Alisha B. Whitman

Theses

This final project report follows the production of a series of embroidered watercolors that explore how war disrupts and can destroy the values which people manage to somehow both hold dear and take for granted. These values, such as peace and freedom, are fragile, and yet they can provide great strength in dark times. This dichotomy is explored through this body of work using the materials of painted paper and thread as symbols of both fragility and strength. Choosing to work with materials and methods historically seen as feminine work add additional meaning to that symbolism. Additionally, Jewish iconography and …

Through an examination of economic growth theories and innovation-driven development models, the research employs a Cobb-Douglas production function for empirical analysis, revealing the significant positive influence of high-quality young populations on regional GDP growth.

Concurrently, case studies of Zhongguancun and Suzhou's textile industry demonstrate the transformative power of young talent in …

Designing Pull-Based Energy System Rules For Public Buildings: An Application Of Modularity, Lei Wang Mar 2025

Designing Pull-Based Energy System Rules For Public Buildings: An Application Of Modularity, Lei Wang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Building energy systems, particularly Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, play a pivotal role in global sustainability efforts. Yet, traditional centralized HVAC systems continue to face major challenges: high energy consumption, significant operational costs, and limited adaptability to dynamic energy demands. These inefficiencies are compounded by the difficulty of integrating renewable energy sources into outdated system designs. As a result, substantial energy waste persists, posing obstacles to cost-effective, environmentally sustainable building operations.

This dissertation proposes a modular, pull-based energy framework to address these critical challenges. By combining the principles of modularity theory with demand-driven energy distribution, the framework enables …

Forecasting workforce requirements is crucial for effective planning in any industry or agency. This study developed machine learning (ML) models to estimate the person-hour requirements of STAs at the project level. The Arkansas Department of Transportation (ARDOT) was used as a case study, using its employee and project details data between 2012 and 2021. ML regression models ranging from linear, tree ensembles, kernel-based, and neural network-based models were …

The Monday Manure, Zachary David Berston Mar 2025

The Monday Manure, Zachary David Berston

Journalism

For my senior project, I wanted to create a new section of Mustang News that includes satire and cartoons. The section is called the Monday Manure to fit with the horse themed titles of other sections. This idea began as a project in the Media Innovation and Entrepreneurship class. While I initially had the idea to have a section that included games, I realized that it was a bit too ambitious after discussing that with the team at Mustang news. Over the course of this project, I have created several satire articles and cartoons, as well as organizing a team …
