How We Survive: A Poem Analyzing Life, Death And Necessity, Pierce H. Dornink
How We Survive: A Poem Analyzing Life, Death And Necessity, Pierce H. Dornink
FUSION
This poem is an analysis of the short story "Living Like Weasels" by Annie Dillard. It focuses on life and death, as well as how life is fleeting, and draws on themes expressed in the source work.
This poem was created as part of a multimodal project for an American Literature class in the Fall of 2024 using the following prompt:
You are responding to literature using creative techniques in two phases. In the first phase, you will compose a 2-4 page piece of creative writing that includes a theme we’ve studied in the class that has significance to you. …

FUSION
This is a project of empowerment. "A Mirror of Us" embraces patriarchal liberation, while celebrating divine femininity. Inspired by “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, this multimodal project aims to shatter conformist ideologies that are all too common.

Tortious Interference With The Expectancy Of A Legacy: Harmon V. Harmon, Paul F. Driscoll
Tortious Interference With The Expectancy Of A Legacy: Harmon V. Harmon, Paul F. Driscoll
Maine Law Review
The decision of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court in Harmon v. Harmon established that a plaintiff has a remedy in damages for tortious interference with the expectancy of a legacy which may be sought prior to the testator's death. The purpose of this Note is to examine the Harmon court's reasoning, the utility of the remedy announced in Harmon in light of pre-existing plaintiffs' remedies, and the potential consequences of that decision. The development of these themes will require an examination of the decisional law background of the Harmon decision and an analysis of the legal status of testamentary expectancies.
Securing Solar Access In Maine, Martha Freeman
Securing Solar Access In Maine, Martha Freeman
Maine Law Review
This Comment explores the common law property concepts of nuisance, water law, and easements which arise by operation of law in order to determine the kind and degree of solar access protection they can provide Maine residential users of solar energy. The final section of this Comment proposes an express solar easement by which Maine citizens can create their own enforceable interests in unobstructed sunlight for solar energy use. In highly urbanized areas where space is scarce and already developed, the conflicts between solar energy users and other land and airspace users may be too difficult to resolve. In Maine, …
Maine's Action To Try Title: A Proposal For Statutory Reform, Eve Hlavatý Cimmet
Maine's Action To Try Title: A Proposal For Statutory Reform, Eve Hlavatý Cimmet
Maine Law Review
Maine law provides three distinct statutory proceedings to try title: the real action, an action at law to quiet title, and an action in equity to quiet title. As the preceding Comment demonstrates, the present statutory scheme preserves outmoded distinctions between law and equity that are functionally obsolete in modern civil practice. Although the statutory law governing actions to try title in most states is, like Maine's, a patchwork product replete with archaic concepts, several other states have consolidated legal and equitable remedies into simple, comprehensive statutory actions. This Comment proposes a similar statute for Maine in the interest of …
Maine's Actions To Try Title: A Historical Perspective, Gregory W. Powell
Maine's Actions To Try Title: A Historical Perspective, Gregory W. Powell
Maine Law Review
Actions to try title are commonly used by Maine lawyers to adjudicate real estate title conflicts. Though often time consuming, expensive, and complicated, such actions are necessary in any state that seeks to foster a stable, economically efficient real estate market. Actions to try title have been necessary in all states because no protective statutory scheme for land titles has ever succeeded in eliminating all title defects that interfere with quiet possession or salability. Maine is no exception. Until a more effective statutory scheme for securing titles and restoring land's marketability becomes available, actions to try title will remain important …

Coastal Recreation: Legal Methods For Securing Public Rights In The Seashore, Jeffrey D. Curtis
Coastal Recreation: Legal Methods For Securing Public Rights In The Seashore, Jeffrey D. Curtis
Maine Law Review
The coastal shores of the United States are a peculiar form of property in that both the littoral landowner and the general public have legally protected interests in the use and enjoyment of the land. In most coastal states the title to the land below the high-water mark is vested in the state in trust for the beneficial use of the public, subject to certain limited rights of the littoral owner. Maine and Massachusetts, however, share a unique allocation of public and private interests which vests the title to the foreshore, the land between the high and low water marks, …
Mental Abnormality In The Maine Criminal Code: Section 58 (1-A), Susan E. Peck
Mental Abnormality In The Maine Criminal Code: Section 58 (1-A), Susan E. Peck
Maine Law Review
The law surrounding the insanity defense has always been complex and problematic. Since the promulgation of the M'Naghten test in 1843, courts and legislators have attempted to articulate a clear and easily understood definition of insanity. Legal scholars have created an overwhelming volume of literature on such important aspects of the defense as the role of psychiatrists in a jury trial, the appropriateness of the diminished capacity defense, and the constitutionality of imposing the burden of proving insanity on the defendant. Even the necessity of retaining the defense has been questioned. The Maine Supreme Judicial Court has recently confronted a …

Women Judges And Wikipedia, Sally Kenney
Women Judges And Wikipedia, Sally Kenney
ConLawNOW
Although many academics may openly discourage their students from consulting it, Wikipedia is the go-to first port-of-call for information for scholarly research, journalists, and even judges. Its info boxes are the source for Google and artificial intelligence in general. Wikipedia is the largest and most widely used encyclopedia in history. Just as feminist scholars have broken into mainstream journals and gained a toehold within university presses, these sources have become increasingly irrelevant and unavailable behind paywalls. Instead, Wikipedia has emerged as the standard research source, but it presents significant barriers to entry for feminist scholars and subjects of women, feminism, …

Reshaping U.S. Imports: An Analysis Of How Shifting Indicators Impact International Manufacturing Location Decisions & The Apparel Industry, Emilia Wojciechowska
Reshaping U.S. Imports: An Analysis Of How Shifting Indicators Impact International Manufacturing Location Decisions & The Apparel Industry, Emilia Wojciechowska
Honors Projects in Global Supply Chain Management
United States imports have grown in recent years due to various geographic sourcing strategies. Each company that chooses to participate in manufacturing whether in-house, offshore, or nearshore has contributed to the economic growth of the US. In recent years, internal and external factors have affected the results of international trade. Indicators have been identified, but they are historically indicators that have not adapted due to the frequent changes in supply chains. The measurement of indicators allows for identification of the most influential indicators that impact the trends within U.S. imports. Significant indicators are dependent on the country and its available …
The Role Of Gender Equity In Olympic Success Using Panel Data, Anusha Khan
The Role Of Gender Equity In Olympic Success Using Panel Data, Anusha Khan
Honors Projects in Mathematics and Economics
This study investigates whether gender equity is one of the determinants of Olympic success at the country level. Using panel data with 766 observations from six Olympic years (2012–2022), it examines the relationship between gender equity and national medal counts. Three Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) models were estimated using total, men’s, and women’s medal counts as dependent variables. While the findings vary across models, results suggest that gender equity may be positively associated with Olympic performance, though its significance is limited when controlling for other social and economic variables.
The Pitch Clock's Impacts On The Game Of Baseball, Cole Ricciarelli
The Pitch Clock's Impacts On The Game Of Baseball, Cole Ricciarelli
Honors Projects in Mathematics and Economics
Past research has investigated what on-field statistics have impacted the success of MLB teams. However, this paper aims to look at the effect that the recent rule change of the pitch clock has on the win percentage of MLB teams. With the implementation of the pitch clock, it was expected that teams with a lower average pitch time would see more success. Using data from the 2013-2024 seasons, statistical analysis was run to determine which variables impacted team win percentage the most. It was found that average pitch times of pitchers did not play a significant role in overall team …

The Use Of Evidence-Based Behavior Practices In The General Education Classroom: A Comparison Of Teacher Perception And Implementation, Casey L. Horvath
The Use Of Evidence-Based Behavior Practices In The General Education Classroom: A Comparison Of Teacher Perception And Implementation, Casey L. Horvath
Education Doctorate Dissertations
This study investigated the perceptions and beliefs of four general education kindergarten teachers regarding their use of evidence-based behavior practices compared to their observed implementation of those practices. Classroom observations were conducted to collect data regarding teachers use of “honey” (positive, evidence-based practices) as compared to their use of “vinegar” (negative comments, redirections, etc.). Teacher interviews were also conducted to examine teacher perceptions, and the data was compared to determine if perceptions matched reality. Teachers reported being familiar with almost all 20 behavior practices included in the study and stated they used more than half. However, teachers were directly observed …
Elucidating The Antibiofilm Characteristics Of A Carbon Infiltrated Carbon Nanotube Surface And A Copper-Coated Carbon Infiltrated Carbon Nanotube Surface, Lucy Christena Bowden
Elucidating The Antibiofilm Characteristics Of A Carbon Infiltrated Carbon Nanotube Surface And A Copper-Coated Carbon Infiltrated Carbon Nanotube Surface, Lucy Christena Bowden
Theses and Dissertations
Post-surgical implant-associated infections cause considerable patient morbidity and mortality. These infections are often caused by biofilm-forming bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Bacterial biofilms are resistant to immune clearance and are a reservoir of antibiotic resistance. Implant materials that resist bacterial colonization may be able to improve patient outcomes. Carbon infiltrated carbon nanotubes (CICNT) are a potential surface modification for medical implants. The work presented in this dissertation focuses on characterizing the antibiofilm effect of the CICNT surface, better understanding its mechanism of action, and characterizing the enhanced antibiofilm effect of a copper-coated CICNT surface. S. aureus biofilms …

Reframing Information Seeking In The Age Of Generative Ai: A Critical And Humanistic Approach, Joseph Kevin Sebastian
Reframing Information Seeking In The Age Of Generative Ai: A Critical And Humanistic Approach, Joseph Kevin Sebastian
Library Faculty Research
Information-seeking has long been the subject of theoretical modeling, often drawing from cognitive, behavioral, computational, and even evolutionary perspectives to explain how individuals navigate, filter, and utilize information. Several dominant frameworks—Carol Kuhlthau’s Information Search Process, Marcia Bates’ Berrypicking Model, Peter Pirolli & Stuart Card’s Information Foraging Theory, Kiyohiko Nakamura’s Information Criteria framework, and Ian Ruthven’s Information Shaping Theory —have provided structured ways of understanding how people interact with information environments. However, while these frameworks offer valuable insights, they often operate within mechanistic or efficiency-driven paradigms, which risk overlooking the complex, embodied, and socioculturally situated nature of human information behaviors. These …
The Enduring Genocide Against The Yazidis: How Iraq's Law On Religious Identity Violates The Human Rights Of Yazidi Survivors Of Isis Captivity And Their Children Born Of Sexual Violence, Michelle Xiao Liu
Northwestern Journal of Human Rights
2024 marked the ten-year anniversary of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) genocide against the Yazidis—an ethnoreligious minority community indigenous to northwest Iraq. Beginning in August 2014, ISIS executed between 3,000 and 5,000 Yazidi men and elderly Yazidi women and buried them in mass graves, kidnapped and converted young Yazidi boys to a radical form of Sunni Islam and pressed them into military service, and captured or trafficked over 6,800 Yazidi women and children, subjecting many of them to sexual violence. ISIS carried out its intent to eradicate the Yazidis through systematic murder, forced conversion, and sexual violence …
