Treatment options are limited for both relapsed/refractory primary and secondary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma and the prognosis remains poor. Previous studies have shown the activity of Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitors and programmed death-1-targeted therapies in CNS lymphoma, and studies suggested potential synergy. Therefore, we conducted a phase 2 trial that combined ibrutinib with nivolumab for patients with relapsed/refractory CNS lymphoma. Patients received 560 mg oral ibrutinib daily with 240 mg IV nivolumab every 14 days (28 days per cycle). Patients who had partial or complete response after 6 cycles of treatment could continue therapy for up to 2 years …

70 - Unmeasured Confounding In Meta-Analyses Of Observational Studies Evaluating Maternal Periodontitis And Adverse Birth Outcomes, May Salama, Abdullah Al-Taiar, Denise Claiborne, Anwar Merchant
Undergraduate Research Symposium
Background: Maternal periodontitis has been consistently linked to adverse birth outcomes (ABOs). However, a causal relationship is not established due to potential unmeasured confounding factors in observational studies and inconclusive results from randomized controlled trials. This study aimed to assess the impact of unmeasured confounding factors in meta-analyses examining associations between maternal periodontitis and preterm birth (PTB) or low birth weight (LBW).
Methods: PubMed and MEDLINE, Cochrane, Embase, and Google Scholar were searched for systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies between 2002 and 2023. Systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies were included if either PTB or LBW were …

A Systematic Review Of Cultural And Structural Barriers To Mammogram Access Among Immigrant Women, Abeer Wael Abukamil, Samar Ghassan Chehab, Sabrina Khan, Rima Charara
Medical Student Research Symposium
Introduction:
Mammograms are crucial for early breast cancer detection and reducing mortality (5). However, U.S. minorities, particularly immigrants, are less likely to receive screenings (9). Identifying barriers can help tailor interventions to meet immigrant women’s needs.
Methods:
Studies were found on PubMed using a systematic review protocol following PRISMA guidelines (8). Search terms included “minority,” “mammograms,” and “barriers.” Articles were then selected for a full-text review by three authors. 220 articles were narrowed down to 7 by relevance and date of publishing (2005 and beyond).
Results:
Cultural barriers often limit immigrant women’s access to breast cancer screenings. In certain non-Western …

A Pilot Study On Tailored Dynamic Written Corrective Feedback For High School Chinese Language Learners, Cilei Han
Doctor of Education (EdD)
Despite a significant increase in global efforts to teach and learn Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) in recent decades (Center for Applied Second Language Studies, 2010), past research reveals that CFL learners face greater challenges in writing than their peers studying AP1 Spanish, French, and German, underscoring the need for targeted writing support at the high school intermediate level (College Board, 2025). To address the gap, this mixed-methods study tailored Dynamic Written Corrective Feedback (DWCF), originally designed for college English (as a second language, ESL) writing courses, to high school intermediate CFL learners. Participants included Level IV students (n …

School of Public Policy Working Papers
Latino adults disproportionately experience financial stress, but no programs developed for Latinos comprehensively and successfully integrate financial capability and stress management approaches to address financial stress. Using a community-partnered approach, we enhanced a digital financial capability intervention with theoretically- and empirically-grounded stress management techniques. We tested whether this integrative intervention improved financial capability, self-efficacy, actions, and stress as well as sleep, a correlate of stress. A sample of 76 Latino adults (39 in the intervention group, 37 in the control group; mean age = 45, 76% female, 88% with household income below $59,999) completed the three-month randomized waitlist-control trial. Participants …

The Impact Of Dual Enrollment On Educational Aspirations Of Traditionally Underrepresented Students In Community College, Wayne Carter, Carol Gruber
The Impact Of Dual Enrollment On Educational Aspirations Of Traditionally Underrepresented Students In Community College, Wayne Carter, Carol Gruber
Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges
This research study examined the difference in academic motivation and academic self-efficacy of traditionally underrepresented students in community college who previously participated in high school dual enrollment programs versus their comparable peers without dual enrollment experience. This is important given the socio-economic disparities between the various student groups participating in this selective college preparatory program. Historically, traditionally underrepresented students have yet to participate in dual enrollment programs commensurate with their non-minority and affluent peers. By examining the difference between these two specific student subgroups, the researchers addressed what types of motivation and self-efficacious behaviors affected these college students who opted …

Exploring Credit Loss For Engineering Transfer Students, Amy J. Richardson, David B. Knight
Exploring Credit Loss For Engineering Transfer Students, Amy J. Richardson, David B. Knight
Inquiry: The Journal of the Virginia Community Colleges
One of the issues at the heart of transfer is the mobility of credits across institutions—moving credits from one institution to another is a crucial process for the transfer pathway to be a viable option. Credit loss is a critical issue for transfer students enrolled in highly sequential degrees, such as engineering. A student could be set back a year or more if they miss one required prerequisite course at the time of transfer. Determining who experiences credit loss in engineering could help ease the transfer process, improve graduation rates, and broaden participation in engineering since the transfer pathway has …

Characterizing Stroke Presenting To A Regional Referral Hospital Before And During The Covid-19 Pandemic In Uganda: A Retrospective Analysis, Christopher Burant, Shirley Moore, Martha Sajatovic
Faculty Scholarship
Introduction: Stroke, a leading cause of global morbidity and mortality, disproportionately impacts low and middle-income countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) which reports the highest stroke burden. The COVID-19 pandemic further complicated this situation, emerging as a significant stroke risk factor. The pandemic also disrupted healthcare systems worldwide, affecting stroke management and care accessibility, and leading to deteriorated conditions in stroke patients upon hospital admission. In this pre/during COVID-19 pandemic analysis of acute stroke cases presenting to a Ugandan hospital, we investigated the relationship between stroke admissions, management and treatment outcomes. Methods: This was a retrospective medical record review in …

Daily Acute Intermittent Hypoxia Elicits Age & Sex-Dependent Changes In Molecules Regulating Phrenic Motor Plasticity, Jayakrishnan Nair, Alexandria Marciante, Carter Lurk, Mia Kelly, Maclain Capron, Gordon Mitchell
Department of Physical Therapy Faculty Papers
Acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH) elicits a form of respiratory motor plasticity known as phrenic long-term facilitation (pLTF). Exposure to repetitive daily AIH (dAIH) enhances pLTF, a form of metaplasticity. Little is known concerning cellular mechanisms giving rise to dAIH-induced metaplasticity and the age-dependent sexual dimorphism of AIH associated pro-plasticity mRNA expression. To test if age, sex, and dAIH effects are associated with differential expression of molecules that regulate the Q- and S-pathways and their cross-talk interactions to phrenic motor facilitation, we analyzed key regulatory molecules in ventral spinal (C3-C5) homogenates from young (3-month) and middle-aged (12-month) male and female Sprague-Dawley …

Motion sickness is associated with thermoregulation and metabolic control, but the underlying neural circuitry remains largely unknown. Here we show that neurons in the medial vestibular nuclei parvocellular part (MVePC) mediate the hypothermic responses induced by motion. Reactivation of motion-sensitive MVePC neurons recapitulates motion sickness in mice. We show that motion-activated neurons in the MVePC are glutamatergic (MVePCGlu), and that optogenetic stimulation of MVePCGlu neurons mimics motion-induced hypothermia by signalling to the lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN). Acute inhibition of MVePC-LPBN circuitry abrogates motion-induced hypothermia. Finally, we show that chronic inhibition of MVePCGlu neurons prevents diet-induced obesity and improves glucose homeostasis …

Predictors Of Political Participation Of U.S. Social Workers: The Mediating Effect Of Confidence, Maria Wathen, Rachel A. Young, Amy Krings, Teresa Kilbane
Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works
What factors are associated with social workers’ political participation, and how does political confidence mediate those relationships? To answer this question, data were collected in 2020 through an original online survey of members of the U.S.-based National Association of Social Workers (NASW). Informed by self-efficacy theory, researchers conducted a structural equation modeling (SEM) path model with political participation as the outcome variable, and political confidence as a mediating variable. Exogenous variables included: one’s self-reported political orientation, belief that social work has a political mandate, gender, and knowledge about how to effectively participate in politics. Results indicate that high political confidence …

The Impact Of Perceived Discrimination On Mental And Physical Health Among The Hispanic Immigrant Population, Cheyla Tabares Cuesta
The Impact Of Perceived Discrimination On Mental And Physical Health Among The Hispanic Immigrant Population, Cheyla Tabares Cuesta
Undergraduate Theses
Discrimination has profoundly shaped the lives of individuals within disadvantaged communities, but its impact on mental and physical health has often been overlooked. In this project, I review literature on perceived discrimination based on immigrant status and its effects on psychological and physical health and examine a potential mediator and moderator of these relationships. Specifically, the relationships between immigration-based discrimination and both mental health and physical health may be mediated by perceived stress, meaning that discrimination may lead to higher stress levels, which results in poorer health outcomes. Furthermore, these relationships may be moderated by psychological resilience; individuals with higher …

BACKGROUND: At least 37 % emergency department (ED) patients are discharged without a definitive diagnosis, resulting in diagnostic uncertainty. Transitions of care are high-risk periods for patient safety, especially for patients discharged with diagnostic uncertainty. Effective communication between clinicians and patients improves these care transitions. Previous research developed tools to support high quality discharge in the setting of diagnostic uncertainty, including: a communication checklist, a physician training program, and a patient-facing information sheet.
METHODS: This study aims to enhance transitions for patients leaving the ED with diagnostic uncertainty through an electronic health record (EHR)-based strategy. The intervention, the Targeted EHR-based …
Acculturation, Social Support, And Immigration-Related Stressors: Impact On Depression Among Single Mother Immigrants In The United States, Comfort Payne
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Depression is a prevalent mental health condition that disproportionately affects immigrant single mothers in the United States, whose risk is heightened by unique vulnerabilities. The interplay between acculturation, social support, and economic burden in this population is underexplored. This quantitative, cross-sectional study examined the relationship between various factors and depression using 2020–2022 National Health Interview Survey data. Inclusion criteria were single immigrant mothers aged 19–60 years, who had lived in the U.S. for at least one year, had one or more dependent children, and self-reported depression status. The socioecological model provided a lens for identifying how individual, interpersonal, and structural …

The Grand Narratives: The Rise And Fall Of Universal Philosophical Systems, Gavin S. Litchford
Senior Honors Theses
This thesis reviews the development of narrative and systematic methods of argumentative legitimation in the Western tradition of philosophy from its conception until the present day. Utilizing both primary sources from central figures in key movements within this development process and supplementary secondary sources, this analysis notes which systems were used as appeals to higher authority and the trends in the adoption and transformation of new models. It is demonstrated that the Enlightenment era punctuated a progression begun in the premodern era from simple, cultural narratives to individualized, subjective, and self-perpetuating Grand Narrative systems, and that it generated the preconditions …
