Dynamics Of Physical Capital In Artisanal Fisheries And Policy Implications, Shekar Bose, Hussein Samh Al-Masroori, Salim Darwish Salim Al-Hasani
Journal of Agricultural and Marine Sciences
The dynamics of physical capital stock and net investment in artisanal fisheries of Al-Seeb - a coastal fishing town of Muscat Governorate are examined covering the period 2004-2013 . Data were gathered from two sources namely the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and field survey. A hedonic regression model is used to examine the influence of boat characteristics on the boat acquisition prices and then to derive the growth rate of physical capital stock. Boat characteristics comprising of ‘age’, ‘horsepower (hp)’ and ‘length (vl)’ are found to be statistically significant at the 5% level and carry sign consistent with the …

Overview Of Decadal Ecosystem Changes In The Western Arabian Sea And The Occurrence Of Algal Blooms, Paul Harrison, Sergey Piontkovski, Khalid Al-Hashmi
Journal of Agricultural and Marine Sciences
Gradual decadal changes have taken place in the Western Arabian Sea over the last 50 years. These changes have affected wind speeds, atmospheric and sea surface temperature, thermohaline stratification, shoaling of the oxycline, and dust/iron inputs. A decrease in nitrate supply of the photic layer have caused an increase in annual frequency of harmful algal blooms and fish kills. Along with that, a decrease in diatom biomass and a shift from red Noctiluca to green Noctiluca during the northeast monsoon was observed during the last two decades, Even though these are the same species they have very different nutritional modes. …
Hematophagous Flies In Dhofar (Sultanate Of Oman): A Limiting Factor And A Potential Pathogenic Vector, Ali Tigani Elmahi
Hematophagous Flies In Dhofar (Sultanate Of Oman): A Limiting Factor And A Potential Pathogenic Vector, Ali Tigani Elmahi
Journal of Agricultural and Marine Sciences
In Dhofar, pastoralists take certain precautionary measures against hematophagous flies: Haematobia minuta Bezzi, Musca crassirostris Stein and Forcipomyia (lasiohelea) whitcombei Boorman. Through their feeding on domesticated animals, these flies impede pasturing in certain areas during the rainy season (Khareef); hence they act as a limiting ecological factor and a custodian of the flora. The possibility that these flies could be potential pathogenic vectors has not been investigated in Oman, although in other parts of the world they are recognized as carriers of disease agents. The paper draws attention to this issue in Dhofar.

Effect Of Diet Quality And Housing On Water Status In Sudanese Desert Sheep And Goats, Hashim Mohamed Elhadi
Journal of Agricultural and Marine Sciences
Two independent experiments were carried out using Sudanese Desert sheep and goats to investigate water metabolism (total body water, TBW and water turnover, WTO) and internal water compartments using radioactive water (tritium), under natural grazing conditions in a semi-desert area. The second trial was carried out on confined sheep, fed high (Lucerne) and poor quality (desert grasses) diets. The body weights, rectal temperature and water parameters were monitored in both trials and species under the Sudanese summer conditions. The grazing animal’s body weights were reduced compared to confined ones. Hyperthermia was pronounced in goats (9%) compared to sheep (6%). The …

Financing The Urban Water Sector In The United States Of America, With Possible Implementation In The Sultanate Of Oman, Ghiyath Nakshbendi
Journal of Agricultural and Marine Sciences
The world has been experiencing a change in water and sewage infrastructure ownership and management. At one end, the public sector in developing countries has been moving towards engaging the private sector in the management and operation of water and sewage sectors. In the United States, the trend is catching up, even though there has been a mixed experience in the involvement of the private sector. While most urban facilities are owned by the public entities of the concerned urban centers, striking up a balanced involvement of both sectors is gradually taking shape. The paper focuses on financing urban water …

The Maine Rules Of Evidence: What They Are And How They Got That Way, Richard H. Field
Maine Law Review
The promulgation by the Supreme Judicial Court of the Maine Rules of Evidence is another landmark in Maine judicial administration. When the Rules of Civil Procedure were adopted in 1959, the old rules of the common law, somewhat eroded by time and patched here and there by legislative poultices, still governed Maine pleading and practice. Since then modem rules of Criminal Procedure have also been adopted, a new Criminal Code has been enacted, and the court system has been reorganized. The Maine Rules of Evidence round out this picture of progress. The Rules of Evidence were promulgated pursuant to the …

Gay Students Organization V. Bonner: Expressive Conduct And First Amendment Protection, Maine Law Review
Maine Law Review
After the Gay Students Organization, an officially recognized student group at the University of New Hampshire, held a dance on campus on November 9, 1973, the Governor of New Hampshire complained to the university's Board of Trustees about the impropriety of allowing such a "spectacle." The next day the Trustees banned all further G.S.O. social functions until the matter could be legally resolved. In Gay Students Organization v. Bonner, the G.S.O. brought an action for a declaratory judgment on the constitutionality of the university's ban. The court held the ban to be an unconstitutional restriction of the group's freedom of …

Validity And Relevancy Analysis: An Approach To The Admissions Of Experimental Evidence, Maine Law Review
Maine Law Review
Rules of evidence in the common law system were developed to serve the fundamental purpose of minimizing erroneous factual conclusions by the jury. In pursuit of this goal, two guiding principles have been followed: first, that the jury should be provided with the most accurate and trustworthy information possible; second, that the flow of information to the jury should be controlled to exclude evidence which is irrelevant or otherwise misleading. Since the earliest cases in which the results of experiments were offered as evidence, American courts have treated experiments as a unique form of evidence but have found it difficult …

First Among Equals: The Lived Experiences Of College Presidents Of Color At Pwis, Kevin L. Booker Jr.
JWU Dissertations & Theses
College presidents serve as key members of a campus administration, but college presidents of color are in the minority, representing only 25% of all campus CEOs (Melidona et al., 2023). The lack of access to higher education for people of color, historically coupled with systemic oppression and racism in the United States, has created an unwelcoming and exclusive environment on many college campuses today (Bitar et al., 2022; Pulley, 2022). As progress is made toward more racially inclusive communities, college presidents of color at Predominantly White Institutions (PWIs) stand uniquely positioned to drive transformative change and expand opportunities for all …

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers
Background/Objectives: Accurate patient-specific dosimetry is essential for optimizing radiopharmaceutical therapy (RPT), but current tools lack validation in clinically realistic conditions. This work aimed to develop a workflow for designing and fabricating patient-derived, organ-realistic RPT phantoms and evaluate their feasibility for commissioning patient-specific RPT radioactivity quantification. Methods: We used computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of representative patients, computer-aided design, and in-house 3D printing technology to design and fabricate anthropomorphic kidney and parotid phantoms with realistic organ spacing, anatomically correct orientation, and surrounding tissue heterogeneities. We evaluated the fabrication process via geometric verification (i.e., volume comparisons) and leak testing …

The Challenges Facing Academic Freedom And Free Speech, Keith E. Whittington
Catholic University Law Review
There are growing challenges to free speech and academic freedom on American college campuses. There is pressure from both the political left and the political right to suppress controversial speech on campus, and there are calls to restrict speech that come both from members of the campus community and from those beyond the campus gates. In this difficult environment, it is essential that academics both understand the principles of academic freedom and campus free speech and work to advocate for them.
Prenatal Personhood, State Duties, And Congress’S Abortion Power Under The Fourteenth Amendment, David R. Upham
Prenatal Personhood, State Duties, And Congress’S Abortion Power Under The Fourteenth Amendment, David R. Upham
Catholic University Law Review
Many antiabortion jurists have contended that by its original meaning, the Fourteenth Amendment not only (1) recognizes the personhood of prenatal human beings, but also (2) requires states to have and enforce the antiabortion laws necessary to the equal protection of these prenatal persons, and even (3) empowers Congress to pass remedial antiabortion laws where the state fail to protect such persons.
In this essay, I will contend that the Amendment does indeed recognize the personhood of prenatal human beings, but largely leaves with the states the authority to determine the scope of the protection to be afforded such persons. …

Global Leaders Must Be Systems Thinkers. This Is A Problem. What To Do About It., Larry M. Starr, Phd
School of Business Faculty Papers
Two cognitive approaches are described about how people including global organizational leaders understand, formulate and try to intervene and solve problems. The prevailing, conventional approach is based on analytic thinking, established 400 years ago. A second approach is systemic thinking which is less than 100 years old, and unlikely to be taught, learned or applied. Increasing evidence about the nature of problems experienced by global leaders is that the context in which problems are occurring is volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous and hyperconnected (VUCAH). While analytic thinking, methods and tools are appropriate and effective for problems in contexts that are stable, …

The complex thermal cycles during the solidification process in metal additive manufacturing (AM) lead to the formation of high-density dislocation networks, organizing into submicron-scale cellular structures. These ultrafine structures are recognized as crucial for enhancing the mechanical properties of AM metals. In this study, we investigate the evolution of dislocation density within these cellular structures under plastic deformation and its impact on mechanical response using dislocation density-based crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) modeling. The model incorporates the evolution of both statistically stored dislocation (SSD) and geometrically necessary dislocation (GND). Our simulations reveal that the yield and flow stresses of dislocation …

Analyzing ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) is crucial for understanding rodents' affective states and social behaviors, but the manual analysis is time-consuming and prone to errors. Automated USV detection systems have been developed to address these challenges. Yet, these systems often rely on machine learning and fail to generalize effectively to new datasets. To tackle these shortcomings, we introduce ContourUSV, an efficient automated system for detecting USVs from audio recordings. Our pipeline includes spectrogram generation, cleaning, pre-processing, contour detection, post-processing, and evaluation against manual annotations. To ensure robustness and reliability, we compared ContourUSV with three state-of-the-art systems using an existing open-access USV …

Deep Jansen-Rit Parameter Inference For Model-Driven Analysis Of Brain Activity, Deepa Tilwani, Christian O'Reilly
Faculty Publications
Accurately modeling effective connectivity (EC) is critical for understanding how the brain processes and integrates sensory information. Yet, it remains a formidable challenge due to complex neural dynamics and noisy measurements such as those obtained from the electroencephalogram (EEG). Model-driven EC infers local (within a brain region) and global (between brain regions) EC parameters by fitting a generative model of neural activity onto experimental data. This approach offers a promising route for various applications, including investigating neurodevel- opmental disorders. However, current approaches fail to scale to whole-brain analyses and are highly noise-sensitive. In this work, we employ three deep-learning architectures—a …

Living Nondirected Kidney Donation: A Psychoanalytic Case-Based Investigation Of Altruism And Its Implications For Psychosocial Evaluation Guidelines, Robert M. Guerin
Faculty Scholarship
Why donate a kidney to a stranger? The history of living nondirected kidney donation, so-called altruistic or Good Samaritan donation, is notable for its associated skepticism if not outright rejection. Since its possibility, transplantation institutes have been concerned over the motives of individuals who present to their clinics with the wish to donate a kidney to a stranger. Are these motives pure? Might there be ulterior motives or secondary gain? Or might these motives be pathological, derivative from a psychiatric disease or syndrome? Although attitudes toward the nondirected donor have improved, skepticism remains: Why, after all, benefit another in this …

We collected and analyzed an array of biosignals (face electromyogram, skin electrodermal activity, peripheral temperature, and electrocardiogram) in 60 participants with and without misophonia, a condition characterized by decreased tolerance to innocuous sounds. Our goal was to objectively characterize the physiological response to misophonia triggering sounds. We found that misophonic responses can be objectively identified in some cases through atypical physiological reactions to triggering stimuli, though not all participants exhibited this response. Our analyses suggest a large interindividual variability in response to misophonic triggers and highlights the need for methodological adjustments in future experiments to increase the detectability of misophonic …
