Mirizzi Syndrome Complicated By Gallbladder Rupture And An Intrahepatic Collection, Shoaa Shetewi, Njoud Aldusary

Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Medical Sciences

Background: Mirizzi syndrome (MS) is a rare complication of chronic gallstone disease, specifically cholecystolithiasis. Diagnosing MS is challenging due to the inflammation that hinders the identification of bile duct complications. Laparoscopic surgery is not recommended due to the risk of intraoperative injuries. Mirizzi syndrome is characterized by an impacted stone at the gallbladder neck that compresses the common hepatic duct and eventually causes ductal erosion. Various imaging modalities facilitate the diagnosis of Mirizzi syndrome.
Objective: This case report aims to highlight the clinical significance of Mirizzi syndrome and the associated diagnostic and surgical challenges.
Methods: A 47-year-old female patient known …

Comprehensive Prediction Analysis Of Novel Noncoding Regulatory Variants Identified In The Microrna Binding Regions In Complement System Genes, Anthony Shadid, Haydn E Rich, Kathryn D Hok, Marie-Francoise Doursout, Marcos I Restrepo, Nirmal K Banda, Lavanya Gunamalai, Pooja Shivshankar

The Brown Foundation: Institute of Molecular Medicine

The complement system is a central component of innate immunity that coordinates host defense, immune surveillance, and inflammatory responses through tightly regulated proteolytic cascades. Genetic variation within complement genes contributes substantially to interindividual differences in complement activity and disease susceptibility. While coding variants directly alter complement protein structure and function, the microRNA (miRNA)-mediated control and post-transcriptional regulation is not fully understood in shaping complement gene expression across immune and inflammatory mechanisms. Complement pathway genes exhibit extensive and heterogeneous 3'-untranslated regions (3'UTRs), which serve as primary platforms for miRNA binding and RNA-binding protein interactions. Both common and rare single-nucleotide polymorphisms within …

Operational Risk Assessment Of Ship To Shore Petroleum Transfer Using Fuzzy Rule-Based Bayesian Networks, Ayman F. Alghanmi Jun 2026

Operational Risk Assessment Of Ship To Shore Petroleum Transfer Using Fuzzy Rule-Based Bayesian Networks, Ayman F. Alghanmi

Journal of King Abdulaziz University: Marine Science

Petroleum ports represent critical infrastructure in global energy supply chains, where operational risks during ship-to-shore transfer operations can lead to catastrophic consequences including environmental damage and human casualties. Despite rigorous safety protocols, these facilities remain vulnerable to operational hazards in dynamic maritime environments. This research aimed to develop and apply a hybrid Fuzzy Rule-Based Bayesian Reasoning (FRBBR) model to identify, evaluate, and prioritize operational hazards during crude oil transfer operations at petroleum port berths, with a case study conducted in Saudi Arabia, addressing the challenge of risk assessment where historical data is limited.
The research employed a mixed-methods approach combining …

Markey & Moulton In Tight Race For Democratic Senate Nomination In Massachusetts 6/30/2026, Unh Survey Center

All UNH Survey Center Polls

Incumbent Senator Ed Markey’s lead over Congressman Seth Moulton has narrowed in the September Democratic primary election in Massachusetts. Markey and Moulton are both favored in general election matchups with presumptive Republican Senate nominee John Deaton. Michael Minogue leads Brian Shortsleeve in the race for the Republican nomination for governor. Maura Healey's job approval as governor has fallen to its lowest level in nearly two years, but she is still tipped to win over either Minogue or Shortsleeve. A plurality of residents think the commonwealth is headed in the right direction and a majority believe housing or the cost of …

Metabolic Markers And Gut Microbiota In Big Cats: A Relationship Between Diet, Health And Environment, Javeria Saman, Saima Sharif, Bushra Nisar, Shagufta Naz

Journal of Bioresource Management

The wild animals that occupy large territories were found to adapt less easily to captive environments compared to those with small home ranges. Among big cats, captivity posed a range of challenges, with stress emerging as central factor influencing overall welfare. Transition into captive environment was shown to alter both behavior and physiological processes, largely due to changes in their natural habitat, environmental complexity and diet. Several health issues reported in big cats including alopecia, gastrointestinal issues, neuromuscular disorders such as hindquarter paralysis were associated with underlying metabolic dysregulation. Metabolic health was recognized as critical component of overall well-being, closely …

Visual Narratives Of Singapore-Johor Relations Through The 1961 And 1962 Water Agreement, Mohd Firdaus Abdullah, Arba’Iyah Mohd Noor, Ismail Ali, Azian Tahir, Meri Anad

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

The issue of the Water Agreement between Johor and Singapore has been widely focused among scholars, both in the country and abroad. Various approaches have been used to analyze this issue, including historical perspectives, politics, international affairs, news, academic articles, government policies, and other documentation sources. However, the visual dimension that plays an important role in analyzing power tensions and diplomatic relations related to the 1961 and 1962 Water Treaty is often neglected, even though it has great potential to provide a deeper perspective on this issue. This research focuses on three main videos, namely Singapore lays pipes to draw …

Regenerating Publics - Developmental Inclusion: Neighborhood Opportunities And Public Realm Obstacles In Plymouth, Uk, Alessandro Aurigi

School of Art, Design and Architecture

The area around Union Street in Plymouth, UK, has been facing processes of decline. Key historical buildings sit empty, with deteriorating fabrics, epitomizing the socio-economic condition of the neighborhood. This paper explores perceptions of ‘inclusion’ in Union Street, and visions to improve it, through interviews with key stakeholders from community groups, the local authority, local businesses, landlords, local health organizations, visitors and designers. Whilst some local actors amplify inclusive processes - for example in the low-cost re-use of spaces to host micro, alternative businesses or community initiatives – these efforts clash with a general perception of a depleted and unsafe …

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma (SNSCC) comprises a heterogeneous group of tumors with emerging molecular subtypes. Human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated SNSCC is a distinct entity, although actionable genomic alterations beyond HPV-driven pathways remain underexplored. Distinguishing HPV-associated SNSCC from carcinoma ex inverted papilloma can be particularly challenging in limited biopsy specimens, as these lesions may appear morphologically similar. We report a case of HPV-associated SNSCC with concurrent FGFR3::TACC3 fusion and NOTCH1 p.C1416 stop-gain mutation.

Background: The preferred treatment for hypogonadism, testosterone replacement therapy (TRT), has a varying efficacy that is currently not fully understood. This observation may be explained by polymorphism of the androgen receptor (AR), a ligand-binding transcription factor whose polyglutamine tract length affects various health conditions and androgen sensitivity. It has been theorized that this polymorphism may also affect the severity of hypogonadism. This study sought to determine a correlation between hypogonadism severity, TRT efficacy, and number of CAG trinucleotide repeats in the AR gene.

Methods: One hundred sixty-two males presenting to a single institution with symptoms of hypogonadism were recruited for …

Oncocytic Intraductal Carcinoma Of The Parotid Gland With Strn::Alk Fusion, Reham H Soliman, Chris Shi, Kevin E Fisher, Hong Yu, Fouad El-Dana, Xu Cao, Li Liang, Pei Ying, Songlin Zhang

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Intraductal carcinoma (IDC) of the salivary gland is an uncommon epithelial neoplasm characterized by a predominantly intraductal or intracystic proliferation rimmed by a myoepithelial cell layer. Advances in molecular profiling have revealed recurrent gene fusions in IDC, most frequently involving RET, although fusions implicating other kinase genes have also been described. Among these, ALK rearrangements are rare and remain poorly characterized. Herein, we report a case of oncocytic IDC of the parotid gland harboring a STRN::ALK fusion, further expanding the molecular landscape of this tumor. Although this fusion has been previously reported in intercalated duct IDC, to our knowledge, this …

A Case Study Of Sport And Racism In Australia: A Qualitative Document Analysis, Vegneskumar Maniam, Kristy O’Neill

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Australia is well known as a ‘sporting nation’ with outstanding elite sporting achievements and grassroots-level sports participation. The reality for Australia’s First Nations people and those from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds, however, tends to differ from the mainstream Australian population. One of the contributing factors being argued within this paper is the prevalence of historical and contemporary racism in Australian sport. This study focuses on four of Australia’s most popular community-participation sports, including Australian Rules Football (ARF), Cricket, Netball, and Swimming. Using a Qualitative Document Analysis method, this research investigates both primary and secondary sources for instances of …
