Investigation Of The Hdl Molecular Architecture Before And After Exercise Training., Prasun Kumar Dev Apr 2025

Investigation Of The Hdl Molecular Architecture Before And After Exercise Training., Prasun Kumar Dev

Theses and Dissertations

The functional characteristics of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles are influenced by their structure, including their molecular composition (e.g. HDL lipidome and proteome). However, the effects of exercise training on HDL molecular composition and its relationship with HDL-related traits are largely unknown. In this ancillary study, we investigated the HDL lipidome and proteome of 154 adults before and after 20 weeks of exercise training in the HERITAGE Family Study. The HDL-sized plasma fraction was isolated utilizing FPLC-SEC, followed by untargeted lipidomic and proteomic analysis using LC/MS. We identified 341 known lipid species while 409 HDL associated proteins. Clinical and functional related …

Hallucinations In Large Foundation Models: Characterization, Quantification, Detection, Avoidance, And Mitigation, Vipula Rawte Apr 2025

Hallucinations In Large Foundation Models: Characterization, Quantification, Detection, Avoidance, And Mitigation, Vipula Rawte

Theses and Dissertations

Deception is an inherent aspect of social interactions, with research indicating that most people engage in deceptive behavior at least once or twice daily . In parallel, advances in artificial intelligence have led to machines exhibiting deceptive tendencies. These deceptions can be categorized into two types: unintended and intentional. Unintended deceptions - often referred to as hallucinations - occur when generative AI systems produce plausible and convincing narratives yet are factually inaccurate. This phenomenon primarily results from the systems' architectural design, extensive parametric memory, and reliance on statistical assumptions. In this thesis, we provide a comprehensive discussion on the characterization, …

Automated Fiber Placement (AFP) is a key manufacturing technique for producing high-performance composite structures, yet existing geometric modeling frameworks lack the specialized functionality required for efficient toolpath planning and laminate optimization. This work presents Knots, a Geometric Modeling Kernel (GMK) developed specifically to address these limitations by providing a unified geometric foundation tailored for AFP. Unlike general-purpose Computer Aided Design (CAD) libraries, Knots is optimized for AFP, offering specialized geometric operations that streamline the transition from design to manufacturing. It directly manages the loading and computation of geometric data, ensuring structured laminate generation while supporting automation and scripting for improved …

Translating Theory Into Practice: Mediating Academic Advising Reform At Scale Through Improvement Science, Joshua Black Apr 2025

Translating Theory Into Practice: Mediating Academic Advising Reform At Scale Through Improvement Science, Joshua Black

Theses and Dissertations

Improving student outcomes at community colleges is a difficult, multifaceted problem. While no single approach can be a panacea for such a challenging problem of practice, Guided Pathways (GP) research suggests a scalable reform model that may ultimately help to improve the underlying systems and structures colleges have designed to support their students, and in turn, may help colleges to achieve the goal of improved student outcomes more consistently. Because of the breadth of the GP model’s recommendations for reform, however, implementation is complex. To be effective, each of the reforms must be localized, adopted, and brought to scale within …

The Glory Of The Islands: The Narrative Of Islands Behind The Design Of ‘Nagara Rimba Nusa’, Rebecca Victoria Simatupang, Rr. Diah Asih Purwaningrum

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

In the pursuit of creating its new capital city, the Indonesian government conducted a design competition to find alternatives that best represented the fusion between traditional and modern Indonesia. The winning design titled ‘Nagara Rimba Nusa’ employed the narrative of glorious islands as the basis of its design concepts, evoking nostalgic memories of ‘Nusantara’ in the era of the Majapahit Kingdom. This narrative became effective in capturing public attention, followed by the President of Indonesia’s decision to formalize Nusantara as the new name of the capital city. This paper delves into the design of Nagara Rimba Nusa and analyses how …

Archiving The Lumad Schools Of Mindanao, Ryan Cezar Alcarde, Michelle Mikiko Pagaran, Victoria Nolasco

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

During the Duterte administration, Indigenous communities in Mindanao, striving to protect their ancestral lands from destructive logging, mining, and agro-industrial plantations, were subjected to attacks by military and paramilitary groups. This resulted in the enforced shutdown of 215 Lumad schools, whose ecocritical pedagogy molded Indigenous children into land protectors and environmental stewards. In response, the Mindanao Climate Justice Resource Facility (MCJRF) and former Lumad school volunteer teachers and students, Indigenous leaders, and supporters launched the “Lumad School Memory Project” in 2023. This research and archiving initiative aims to document the rich educational practices of the forcibly closed Lumad schools, ensuring …

Delirium And Derangement: Futurities Of Climatic And Islandic Relationality In Philippine Artistic Practice, Isa Lacuna

Akda: The Asian Journal of Literature, Culture, Performance

The Philippines as locus of both specific experience and shared sympathy with regard to climate change allows for an investigation of the complex factors that describe a realm of experience unique to this present age: catastrophic weather in both its scorching and diluvian iterations. In this paper, I argue that the atmospheric delusions in the artistic practices of Mark Orozco Justiniani’s Arkipelago and the Vargas Museum’s Fever Dream point to a more expansive relationality with climate that forces us to re-evaluate precisely what ecocritical scholars have called the derangements of everyday modern life. The experience of exceptional heat and rain, …

An Examination Of Karl Barth’S Critique Of Natural Theology: The Epistemological Shift Post-Salvation, Luke D. Pelkey Apr 2025

An Examination Of Karl Barth’S Critique Of Natural Theology: The Epistemological Shift Post-Salvation, Luke D. Pelkey

Selected Honors Theses

This thesis reexamines Karl Barth’s rejection of natural theology, specifically if his Christocentric framework allows for a limited, post-salvific engagement with natural revelation. While Barth is adamant in his denial of the source of knowledge of God being found solely through reason, logic, or nature, this thesis argues that Barth does not reject the possibility of natural revelation but rejects its accessibility. But, due to the effects of salvation on not just the soul but the whole of one’s being, the mind is also renewed, allowing for the noetic effects of sin to be overcome. Drawing from Church Dogmatics I/1, …

Safety net hospitals (SNHs) provide care to patients regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay, serving populations at the highest risk for poor stroke outcomes. These include historically marginalized racial and ethnic groups, and individuals disproportionately affected by adverse social drivers of health, including lower socioeconomic status, housing instability, and limited access to preventive care. Improving stroke care at SNHs presents a critical opportunity to strengthen care delivery for individuals with the greatest need. However, such efforts require a clear understanding of the barriers across all levels of the healthcare system. In this Perspective, the authors adopt a …

Abnormal adipogenesis is a major contributor to fetal growth restriction (FGR) and its associated complications. However, the underlying etiology remains unclear. Here, it is reported that the placentas of women with pregnancies complicated with FGR exhibit peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) inactivation. In mice, trophoblast-specific ablation of murine PPARγ reproduces the phenotype of human fetuses with FGR and defective adipogenesis. Coculture of trophoblasts with preadipocytes significantly improves preadipocyte commitment and differentiation and increases the transcription of a series of adipogenic genes via intercellular transfer of exosomal PPARγ proteins. Moreover, nanoparticle-mediated placenta-specific delivery of rosiglitazone (RGZ) significantly rescues adipogenesis defects in …

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a disease with a poor prognosis and no curative therapies. Fibroblast activation by transforming growth factor β1 (TGFβ1) and disrupted metabolic pathways, including the arginine-polyamine pathway, play crucial roles in IPF development. Polyamines are agonists of the calcium/cation-sensing receptor (CaSR), activation of which is detrimental for asthma and pulmonary hypertension, but its role in IPF is unknown. To address this question, we evaluated polyamine abundance using metabolomic analysis of IPF patient saliva. Furthermore, we examined CaSR functional expression in human lung fibroblasts (HLFs), assessed the anti-fibrotic effects of a CaSR antagonist, NPS2143, in TGFβ1-activated normal …

Climate change, import restrictions, and global conflicts are significantly impacting brewing raw material supply and costs. To shield the malting and brewing industries from these disruptions, alternative crops to barley must be explored. Rice presents a promising option, yielding twice as much per hectare as barley and showing greater climate resilience. Monte Carlo simulations estimated the economic and agronomic impact of using rice for malting. While rice malt is more expensive to produce, it remains an attractive gluten-free alternative. Beer brewed from 100% rice malt costs 33% more than barley-based beer but reduces acreage requirements by 50-67%. Using rice malt …
