Department of Neurosurgery Faculty Papers
Chronic subdural hematoma (cSDH) presents a multifaceted challenge in contemporary neurological practice, necessitating innovative therapeutic strategies. This comprehensive review explores the convergence of two promising interventions: statins and middle meningeal artery (MMA) Embolization. With cSDH incidence on the rise, particularly among the aging population and those with long-term anticoagulant usage, the traditional surgical avenues face limitations in recurrence rates and associated risk factors. Statins, heralded for their anti-inflammatory, vasculogenic, and angiogenic properties, are emerging as potential allies in cSDH management. Concurrently, MMA embolization offers a nuanced approach to target the neomembrane's blood supply, with evidence supporting its efficacy and safety. …

Social Support As A Buffer Of The Association Between Intimate Partner Violence And Anxiety Among Sexual And Gender Minorities Assigned Female At Birth, Shariell T. Crosby
Social Support As A Buffer Of The Association Between Intimate Partner Violence And Anxiety Among Sexual And Gender Minorities Assigned Female At Birth, Shariell T. Crosby
Theses and Dissertations from DePaul University
Sexual and gender minority (SGM) individuals experience similar to higher rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) compared to the general population (Basile et al., 2020; Whitfield et al., 2021). Additionally, exposure to IPV has been linked to negative mental health outcomes including anxiety (Charak et al., 2019; Henry et al., 2021; Reuter et al., 2017; Strauss et al., 2020). One possible factor that may buffer against the negative effects of IPV on anxiety is social support. The theoretical model of the buffering effect of social support suggests that social support may “buffer” against the harmful mental health effects of stressful/traumatic …

Turbulence Numerical Simulation Of Flow Characteristics Of Laval Nozzle Top Blow Jet, Ai Liang Chen, Yao Liu, Zi Biao Wang, Huan Wu Zhan, Xue Xian Jiang, Feng Long Sun, Jiann Yang Hwang, Xi Jun Zhang
Michigan Tech Publications
The turbulent characteristics of the top-blown Laval nozzle and the influence of pressure and Mach number were studied through numerical simulation. With 2.72% error between the results and the empirical formula, the results are reliable. Nozzle fluid is influenced by pipe structure, causing pressure and density to drop as speed increases. Differences in pressure and velocity between the jet and surrounding gas lead to jet velocity attenuation, flow expansion, deflection, and eddy currents. The optimal top blowing pressure is 0.6 MPa, and the center velocity and width of the jet are 345 m/s and 0.124 m, respectively, at 20De (De …
Understanding The Interactive Effects Of Mindfulness Practices And Sleep Quality On Nightmare Frequency And Severity, Jessica M. Guerra
Understanding The Interactive Effects Of Mindfulness Practices And Sleep Quality On Nightmare Frequency And Severity, Jessica M. Guerra
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Mindfulness and high-quality sleep can lessen nightmare frequency and severity. Sleep quality and nightmares are negatively correlated, and some studies have shown that mindfulness lessens nightmares. However, less is known about the combined effect of mindfulness and sleep quality on nightmare frequency and severity. This study aims to fill this gap by asking the question, does the combination of mindfulness and high-quality sleep have a stronger effect in lessening nightmare frequency and severity than either variable alone? Mindfulness practices should be explored alongside high-quality sleep to lessen the frequency and severity of nightmares using quantitative data analysis. A Qualtrics survey …

In addition to energy storage, adipose tissue communication to other organs plays a key role in regulating organismal physiology. While the link between adipose tissue dysfunction and pathophysiology, including diabetes, chronic inflammation, and infertility, is clear, the molecular mechanisms that underlie these associations have not been fully described. We use Drosophila melanogaster as a model to better understand how adipose tissue communicates to the ovary. In this study, we utilized D. melanogaster’s robust genetic toolkit to examine the role of five adipokines known to control larval growth during development, CCHamide-1, CCHamide-2, eiger, Growth-blocking peptide 3, and unpaired 2 in regulating …

Background
Participation in Naturalistic Developmental Behavioral Interventions (NDBI) is associated with significant improvements in functioning for toddlers with, and showing early signs of, autism spectrum disorder. The Part C Early Intervention (EI) system, which is publicly funded and available in all U.S. states, offers an optimal infrastructure through which toddlers can receive NDBIs. This study seeks to assess the effectiveness and fit of one NDBI, Caregiver Implemented Reciprocal Imitation Teaching (CI-RIT), within the Part C EI system.
Methods
This hybrid type 1 effectiveness/implementation trial uses a multi-site randomized control design to simultaneously test effectiveness and collect implementation data on CI-RIT …
Falling Women And Empty Skies: Returning To 9/11 In Fiction By Daniel Alarcon, Claire Vaye Watkins, And Otessa Moshfegh, Jeffrey Gonzalez
Falling Women And Empty Skies: Returning To 9/11 In Fiction By Daniel Alarcon, Claire Vaye Watkins, And Otessa Moshfegh, Jeffrey Gonzalez
Department of English Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Daniel Alarcon’s “Absence,” Claire Vaye Watkins’s “Rondine al Nido,” and Otessa Moshfegh’s My Year of Rest and Relaxation are American works of fiction that save their most substantive commentary on the 9/11 terror attacks for their final page, despite each text largely focusing on other matters. This gesture illustrates the works calling upon and questioning the gravitas afforded to the tragedy of September 11. Reviewing the reception history of 9/11 fiction and making comparisons to canonical 9/11 narratives, I argue that these texts complicate these canonical and criticial frameworks: they treat 9/11’s significance as a variable, rather than a constant.

Similarity Measure And Sine Exponential Measure Of Possibility Interval-Valued Neutrosophic Hypersoft Sets And Their Applications, Eman Hussein, Yousef Al-Qudah, Hm Jaradat, Faisal Al-Sharqi, Saja Elnajar, Ali Jaradat
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
The Hypersoft set (HSS) has been created as an extension of a soft set (SS) in order to address limitations for the thought of disjoint attribute-valued sets corresponding to distinct attributes. The HSSs melted with several fuzziness structures present in literature to handle real-world scenarios with complexity and uncertainty. One such extension is the interval-valued neutrosophic hypersoft set (iv-NHSS), which focuses on the partitioning of each attribute into its attribute-valued set with these attribute-valued sets, three iv-NHS memberships degree line closed interval [0,1]. However, the iv-NHSS model is short of assessing the vague nature of parameters and sub-parameters that cause …
New Approach Single Valued Neutrosophic Sets For Teaching Quality Challenges Evaluation In College Public English Broad Impacts, Xiao Ma
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
Previous research on teaching quality challenges in college public English has relied on methods that accept vague or fuzzy inputs. Single-valued neutrosophic Sets (SVNSs) are used to handle uncertain or unclear expert assessments by allowing both precise and imprecise data to be analyzed together. This approach ensures that valuable information is not lost during the evaluation process. To improve decision-making in multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problems, this study introduces a new integrated framework that combines the EDAS method with the MEREC method for criteria weight computation under the SVNS environment. The MEREC method is applied to determine the importance of each …
High-Quality Development Evaluation Of Cultural And Tourism Integration Empowered By The Digital Economy Under Double Valued Neutrosophic Sets, Jun Wang, Xiong Hu
High-Quality Development Evaluation Of Cultural And Tourism Integration Empowered By The Digital Economy Under Double Valued Neutrosophic Sets, Jun Wang, Xiong Hu
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
This study proposed a decision-making approach to evaluate the cultural and tourism integration empowered by the digital economy. Two methods are used in this study, such as Entropy method to compute the criteria weights and the MABAC method to rank the alternatives. These methods are used under the neutrosophic sets. Neutrosophic sets (NSs) are used to represent ambiguous, inconsistent, and unpredictable data that arise in practical issues. Indeterminacy leaning toward truth membership and indeterminacy leaning toward falsity membership are two separate components of double-valued neutrosophic sets (DVNSs), a variant of NSs. Three experts have evaluated the criteria and alternatives. Ten …
Bipolar Neutrosophic Driven Approach For Assessing The Teaching Quality Of English Language And Literature Learning Outcomes, Keyan Zhao
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
The quality of teaching in English Language and Literature is a crucial factor in enhancing student learning outcomes, fostering critical thinking, and promoting linguistic and literary proficiency. Nevertheless, the procedure of assessing the quality of English teaching remains a thought-provoking task since it typically depends on individual judgments, variety in criteria, and inconsistency in human observation, resulting in intrinsic uncertainty. Bipolar Neutrosophic Sets (BNS) offer an expressive way to model ambiguity in a bipolar manner using three positive and three negative memberships. Motivated by that, we propose to explore the novel approach based on BNS to improve the judgmental process …
Expanded Triangular Fuzzy Neutrosophic Numbers For Safety Risk Evaluation Of Urban Rail Transit Engineering: An Innovative Method For Better Risk Assessment, Xiuli Liu
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
Safety assessment of urban rail transit (URT) operations plays a crucial role not only in shaping passenger travel choices but also in urban development planning. The findings of such assessments are valuable for both passengers and transport operators. In this study, we propose an integrated multi-stage evaluation framework to assess URT operations from a safety perspective. This framework considers decision-makers' (DMs') risk preferences and the uncertainty of available information. We employ two key methods: the CRITIC method to determine the weights of evaluation criteria and the MOORA method to rank the alternatives. Both methods operate within the framework of triangular …
Adaptive Triangular Linguistic Neutrosophic Cubic Fuzzy Sets For College English Blended Teaching Mode Evaluation Method, Hongxia Cui
Neutrosophic Sets and Systems
This paper presents a proactive strategy that employs a multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model as an evaluation tool. To assess online and offline blended teaching modes for college English, we propose an evaluation framework called CIMAS-COBRA, which integrates the Criteria Importance Assessment (CIMAS) method for determining criteria weights and the Cost Estimation, Benchmarking, and Risk Assessment (COBRA) method for ranking alternatives. Both methods operate under the Triangular Linguistic Neutrosophic Cubic Fuzzy Sets framework to handle uncertain and vague data. Seven criteria and ten alternatives are examined in this study. The Triangular Linguistic Neutrosophic Cubic Fuzzy Number approach is employed to evaluate …

This article aims to analyze the influence of human capital on innovation. To achieve this, the Methodi Ordinatio methodology was used. The search for scientific articles was done using the Scopus and Web of Science databases. Only documents published between 2013 and 2023 were selected. The systematic review of the literature shows that human capital is relevant in promoting innovation in any type of economy; however, the impact may vary depending on the economic and regional context being studied. The data obtained are analyzed with the help of the hybridization of the Methodi Ordinatio with the HyperSoft Sets theory. In …
Differential Impacts On Proteoglycan Expression In The Response To Lens Wounding In Reparative And Pro-Fibrotic Microenvironments, Janice L Walker, A. Sue Menko
Differential Impacts On Proteoglycan Expression In The Response To Lens Wounding In Reparative And Pro-Fibrotic Microenvironments, Janice L Walker, A. Sue Menko
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Ex vivo lens epithelial explant cultures created through a technique that mimics cataract surgery provided an ideal model with which to compare the impacts on proteoglycan expression in the response to wounding in both reparative promoting and pro-fibrotic microenvironments. On their native basement membrane capsule the injured lens epithelium undergoes regenerative repair, with the wound closing within a few days. Their migration across the wound area is led by a population of activated lens resident immune cells. The same leader cell population also directs the wounded epithelium to migrate off the outside edges of the lens explant across the surrounding …

Diversity in clinical trials is defined by the inclusion of clinical trial participants from various demographic groups that are representative of the broader population impacted by a disease state. Diversity in clinical trials is critical in identifying potential differences in safety and efficacy of treatments across races, ethnicities, ages, sexes, or other variables. In the United States, clinical trial diversity is often benchmarked against US Census data, which may limit the representativeness of patient demographics in clinical trials. Disease-specific, demographic estimates from real-world data (RWD) can facilitate benchmarking of clinical trials, support trial enrollment and the development of trial diversity …
The Relationship Between Perceived Stress, Rumination, And Sleep Quality Among University Students, Aljazeeya Almansoori
The Relationship Between Perceived Stress, Rumination, And Sleep Quality Among University Students, Aljazeeya Almansoori
Theses
Sleep is a crucial physiological function that underpins human health and wellbeing, profoundly affecting cognitive abilities, emotional stability, and the overall quality of life. Disruptions in sleep quality and quantity are commonly associated with increased perceived stress and rumination. This study aimed to investigate the correlations among perceived stress, rumination, and sleep quality in university students in the UAE, while also considering demographic factors such as age, gender, marital status, and educational level. It was hypothesized that higher levels of perceived stress and rumination would be associated with lower sleep quality. The study employed a cross-sectional design, involving a sample …

In areas of machine learning such as cognitive modeling or recommendation, user feedback is usually context-dependent. For instance, a website might provide a user with a set of recommendations and observe which (if any) of the links were clicked by the user. Similarly, there is growing interest in the so-called “odd-one-out” learning setting, where human participants are provided with a basket of items and asked which is the most dissimilar to the others. In both of those cases, the presence of all the items in the basket can influence the final decision. In this article, we consider a classification task …

Universities are increasingly integrating real-world projects into software engineering curricula to preparestudents for careers involving complex concepts like Microservices Architecture (MSA). Students frequentlystruggle with such concepts within limited class time and turn to various search tools and online resources for additional help. Search tools are also widely used in the software development industry. While search engines, like Google and Yahoo!, can provide quick solutions, they pose the risk of information overload. Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT, offer the advantage of delivering more precise answers. Studies have shown that LLMs can comprehend codes, assist in system architectural design, and …

Video Large Language Models (Video-LLMs) have made remarkable progress in video understanding tasks. However, they are constrained by the maximum length of input tokens, making it impractical to input entire videos. Existing frame selection approaches, such as uniform frame sampling and text-frame retrieval, fail to account for the information density variations in the videos or the complex instructions in the tasks, leading to sub-optimal performance. In this paper, we propose Frame-Voyager that learns to query informative frame combinations, based on the given textual queries in the task. To train Frame-Voyager, we introduce a new data collection and labeling pipeline, by …

We discuss our methodology and implementation of ChatGPT-permitted assessments for a university-level spreadsheets modelling module. Through our quantitative data analysis, our students rated ChatGPT’s answers to be incorrect on average and thus will not help them generate better answers directly, representing low “Perceived usefulness” (PU), while they rated ChatGPT 3.5 with relatively high “Perceived ease of use” (PE). They gave a good “Behavioural intention” (BI) rating indicating that they were motivated to use it in future as they could still learn more about this module by using ChatGPT 3.5. We found that both PU and PE affected BI positively, with …

Verification Of Bit-Flip Attacks Against Quantized Neural Networks, Yedi Zhang, Lei Huang, Pengfei Gao, Fu Song, Jun Sun, Jin Song Dong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In the rapidly evolving landscape of neural network security, the resilience of neural networks against bit-flip attacks (i.e., an attacker maliciously flips an extremely small amount of bits within its parameter storage memory system to induce harmful behavior), has emerged as a relevant area of research. Existing studies suggest that quantization may serve as a viable defense against such attacks. Recognizing the documented susceptibility of real-valued neural networks to such attacks and the comparative robustness of quantized neural networks (QNNs), in this work, we introduce BFAVerifier, the first verification framework designed to formally verify the absence of bit-flip attacks against …
