The management of acute heart failure (AHF) is becoming increasingly complex, especially in patients with multiple comorbidities. Endothelin-1 (ET-1), a vasoconstrictive peptide, is an important mediator of neurohormonal activation, endothelial dysfunction, and cardiac remodeling-key processes involved in the pathogenesis of AHF. The aim of our study was to evaluate the diagnostic and prognostic performance of ET-1 in multimorbid AHF patients, compared to established markers such as amino terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI). We conducted a single-center prospective study including 76 patients; 54 with AHF and 22 serving as controls. Upon admission, all patients …

Pilrα Sustains Microglial Capacity To Process Myelin In A Mouse Model Of Demyelination, Kent Lin

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by amyloid-β (Aβ) plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, and neurodegeneration. Microglia, the resident immune cells of the central nervous system (CNS), play a crucial role in AD pathogenesis by containing the spreading of Aβ plaques. Genetic studies have associated a variant of the receptor Paired Immunoglobulin-like Type 2 Receptor Alpha (PILRα) with reduced risk for AD. PILRα is a receptor found on myeloid cells, such as microglia, that binds to endogenous cell surface glycoproteins and sends inhibitory signals within the cell. Additionally, it serves as an entry receptor for Herpes Simplex Virus 1. To elucidate the role …

Essays On Monetary Economics, Joseph Kachovec

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Chapter I builds a quantitative New-Keynesian model with a central bank balance sheet, fiscal policy, and a representative financial intermediary facing uncertainty to show how interest rate policy has an additional counter-cyclical fiscal impact via central bank income when reserves are abundant as opposed to scarce. A counterfactual analysis between the US economies with small and large central bank balance sheets of 2005 and 2018 shows that in response to demand, supply, and government spending shocks, the real effects of identical interest rate changes are amplified in the abundant reserves economy. In response to a 1% preference shock, cumulative fluctuations …

Neurons in the neocortex exhibit astonishing morphological diversity, which is critical for properly wiring neural circuits and giving neurons their functional properties. However, the organizational principles underlying this morphological diversity remain an open question. Here, we took a data-driven approach using graph-based machine learning methods to obtain a low-dimensional morphological "bar code" describing more than 30,000 excitatory neurons in mouse visual areas V1, AL, and RL that were reconstructed from the millimeter scale MICrONS serial-section electron microscopy volume. Contrary to previous classifications into discrete morphological types (m-types), our data-driven approach suggests that the morphological landscape of cortical excitatory neurons is …

Purpose: Ultra-high dose rate (>40 Gy/s, FLASH) radiation therapy (RT) provides equivalent tumor control while reducing normal tissue toxicity relative to conventional dose rate (CONV) RT. However, the mechanisms underlying the observed FLASH effect are unknown. We hypothesized that the preservation of mitochondrial integrity in nontumorigenic cells by FLASH RT could be a key factor in reducing normal tissue toxicity and improving overall treatment outcomes.

Methods: We examined mitochondrial health and function after CONV and FLASH in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo through assays of metabolic flux, mitochondrial membrane potential, mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial DNA damage …

The mammalian cochlea receives efferent feedback from the brain. Many functions for this feedback have been hypothesized, including on short timescales, such as mediating attentional states, and long timescales, such as buffering acoustic trauma. Testing these hypotheses has been impeded by an inability to make direct measurements of efferent effects in awake animals. Here, we assessed the role of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent nerve fibers on cochlear amplification by measuring organ of Corti vibratory responses to sound in both sexes of awake and anesthetized mice. We studied long-term effects by genetically ablating the efferents and/or afferents. Cochlear amplification increased …

Extreme Cold Discomfort In Extreme Hot Climates, A Study Of Building Overcooling In Office Buildings In Qatar, Abdulla Alnuaimi, Sukumar Natarajan

The Journal of Engineering Research

Indoor cold discomfort in Qatar due to “building overcooling” is increasing, as air-conditioning prevails, and global temperatures rise. Overcooling is not dependent only on the inappropriate design of cooling systems, but on “international” thermal comfort standards that are not customized for warm climates. International standards are unintentionally biased towards cooler climates and cultures, the application of which in warm climates result in colder indoor temperatures observed by building occupants and increased cooling energy demand. Overcooling is an over-expenditure of energy, resulting in uncomfortably cold indoor thermal conditions, and unnecessary carbon emissions. In this study, the analysis of field data from …

In Achieving The Most Of Limited Research Budget For Engineering Research Projects: A Case Study At Sultan Qaboos University, M Zarog

The Journal of Engineering Research

Motivating engineering research in universities with limited or tight research budgets is a challenging task. There is always a conflict between researchers attempting to secure enough funds to ease their own research, and funding bodies and universities trying to achieve high quality research while lowering research expenses. This conflict leads to a situation where universities and researchers cannot achieve their goals altogether. This study attempts to partially resolve this issue by optimizing research expenditure for the benefit of both universities and researchers and suggests some policies regarding what type of research (modelling based or experimental based) universities should support. Other …

Carrier Based Pwm Technique And Adaptive Neural Network Based Rotor Resistance Estimator For The Performance Enhancement Of Vector Controlled Induction Motor Drives, Venkadesan A

The Journal of Engineering Research

In this paper, the carrier based Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) technique and neural network based rotor resistance estimator are proposed for vector controller Induction motor (IM) drives. The popular sine PWM is used for induction motor drive. The popular sine PWM has poor harmonic profile and (DC) utilization. The space vector modulation (SVM) technique overcomes the disadvantages of sine PWM. But SVM is computationally complex. Hence a simple PWM technique namely “carrier based PWM technique” similar to SVM is identified and proposed for vector controlled IM drive. The experimental set up is built up and the performance of carrier based …
